i'm going to show you today my barista 9 stovetop

espresso maker and this thing weighs
about three and a half pounds this

is a functional piece of art i
love these beautiful wooden handles

there's one on each side you use it
to take off your espresso reservoir

or reservoir depends on where you're from
and who you are this is where my beautiful

deer espresso is going to end up pumped
through at nine bars pressure with crema

and it comes with this little rubber i call
it the uh the espresso holder inner and that's

gonna hold it right there and then what happens
is all that pressure comes up through the bottom

this is coming through at nine bars pressure
every little chimney right here and the chimney

is boiling when the water comes up
into the second boiler right here

all right and this is the one where it's
getting to the it's holding it has cooled itself

i'm going to talk about these details it's kind
of complicated it's come up through these cooling

coils right here from the bottom reservoir
where it gets to about 355 degrees

and boom the spring-loaded thing let's go comes
up to the coils it holds here and then it comes up

to these heat fins and boom nine bar pressure you
gotta espresso now let me tell you right now i am

not trying to sell you this barista nine stovetop
espresso maker no i got myself this for christmas

i ordered it um probably four or five months
earlier earlier i waited for it patiently it

came the day before christmas day came on
christmas eve so that was perfect i'm just

showing this to you you know if you're enticed
and things like espresso makers appeal to you then

consider this a looky see and something
to see i saw it when james hoffman showed

it i love it to me this is a piece of
art it's even inscribed suge woo buddy

right there look at that that just thrills
me because you know i like my name on stuff

this cost me i'm just going to tell you
in all transparency i probably spent 475

ordering it and having it shipped
from the uk i don't mind that i

i don't spend my money on a lot of stuff i live
a pretty simple life hey youtube people once you

come out my backyard watch my boil some espresso
here i'm going to be using red bird mountain high

espresso i also like the red bird espresso this is
mountain high they both come from different farms

deciding which one i like better they're both a
uh they're not a dark roast they're like a hard

medium roast my espresso palette is growing so
now between my barista nine and of course my uh

breville bambino pro which is fun but this one
i can take uh i would never take it backpacking

but i can take it in the summer car camping or
just go out in the backyard and fire me up a brew

comes with a really nice tamper it's
got nice weight to it this camper

and a stainless steel plate it's very specific
all right do not use this plate without the nine

barista and this side up and this is like
made of three metals and it works really

nice on my gas stove because i can put it
just like this i'm not burning my handles

yeah it has a little inscription on the
bottom be awake sug all secure in sector seven

all right i like an 18 gram dose and i
use a 12 grind size on this just gives

me the best flavor i always write it on
my bags just so i know what i'm doing

got that give that a little shake
to level it out now take that

get that with this thing level it out somewhat and
then i take my tamper make sure i'm level and i

give it just a little push there is my tamper even
no i'm a little bit off as i usually am all right

give that a spin and now i got a nice smooth bed
a red bird mountain high espresso i had this on

and we will put that onto
the pot so now i'm going to

fill up the high pressure boiler
right to that little lip right there

it's really got to get it right just right

you don't want to be over it all right maybe a
little so i'm just about at it right there all

right then we're going to go ahead and put that
right on there get those threads in there well

get it tight it has a nice o-ring in there you
want it snug because after this thing is boiled

you got this pressure valve right here boy
when you let this thing go after it's done

even after it's cool for an hour it goes

then what i'm going to do is i go ahead and
take this my espresso is right down in there

and let's go ahead and lock that in and now that
baby's ready to go all right here's the deal

on this newfound love of espresso and what it's
about and some of this is due to the pandemic

because i was listening to my brother-in-law's
talk about their ipas and their beers and their

drinks and i realized i i just didn't have
you know i'm i'm an alcoholic which mean i've

been sober 34 years now i don't have a drink
that's special and i want to have that moment

by pulling myself a shot not looking
at the computer just taking a moment

and enjoying that moment i really went down
the wormhole of looking at espresso videos

and maybe when i'm drinking the espresso and how
many times can i say espresso all right let's

get on out there put your jacket on a couple of
hats because it's it's crispy cold outside today

it's 18 degrees but there's a little breeze and
it's just it feels cold yeah i made a little

last-minute decision to grab the old canister
stove all right i'm gonna put the baffle plate on

set her up here i'll get my
little espresso glass right there

looking for about a five six minute
boil and a 28 to 32 second shot

once that starts bubbling all right we're
starting to get boo bubbling good here it comes

there we go that beautiful crema is
coming up i can turn the stove off now

look at that

for myself a shot i treasure these shot
glasses they're from the american club

when my family first moved to greece in 1963
when my dad was stationed there all right

it's still just perking up just
a little bit with residual heat

and i'll take it

not bitter slightly sweet anxious
there's a nice coating in the mouth

i love james hoffman uses that word anxious and i
actually had to go google it and anxious means if

it's referring to a person it means slimy like
dude that dude is anxious like he's just kind

of a slimy scammer guy but when you're talking
about something like a beautiful shot of espresso

you're talking about sort of a a sensation a
thickness a coating a texture in your gob there

take the little shot glass away and uh
is that right there so anyway while i'm

drinking this espresso one final thought
is a couple of videos i've been watching

lately and like say i don't watch a lot of
backpacking because most of mine are that um i've

really been getting the urge to do more canoeing
and i was on canoe hounds live podcast a month ago

and i watch a lot of his stuff because it's canoei
fell into watching jim baird and i didn't even

know he was on alone him and his brother ted
and they won alone season four sorry spoiler

and i turned him on one night and was just
watching some canoe trip and i was going

who is this guy dragging the canoe through the
woods and doing these triple portages anyway i

love his stuff i just finished his like 15 day
arctic adventure with his dog buck up on baffin

island man that guy is making a living and as
an adventurer and uh he's not having any fun at

all as he says that's type 2 fun he is cranking it
out and i've been watching john and aaron and i'm

going to put the links to all these below can't
think of their actual it's a back back country

angling a canadian couple and they just do a lot
of canoeing and a lot of fishing and it makes me

want to canoe and fish i've been watching a lot
of their stuff truly enjoying it then i fell into

watching this guy that cuts wood he said i don't
know why i'm on this canadian kick and his name is

buck and billy ray and this guy he's felling trees
and chopping woods i've watched him chop wood for

40 minutes and was totally calm by it keep in mind
it was late at night meg was in bed i watched one

last night of him just felling these big trees and
he's really great he's going be kind everybody man

you know he's always he's always blowing snot and
sniffing and talks about being kind and achieving

your goals and be a good person and he's given
me a lot of information on wood cutting and axe

heads and i ended up from him watching a guy
named cole cracker just sharpening axes and

i've watched a lot of his stuff and he's a bush
craft guy that just does all these tutorials and

kind of learned some stuff from him and where
else did i go of course my road down the espresso

highway or boulevard or court or circle i
would say it's more like an espresso interstate

man was that good that was a good shot right there
this thing pulls a great shot now i drink out of

my mocha pot every morning i don't want to get
up and make an espresso right away i want my

mocha pot and i love my mocha pot and you can
come close to an espresso with that you know

there's some finagly things you can do
but this is true but i want a couple of

good cups of strong coffee a lot of times in the
afternoon i fix a shot and i make about another

hot water i make a real light americano have that
sometimes a little bit of a lemon peel in there

i still like that that's just reminds
me of being in italy and getting shots

and of course on top of that i watch
a lot of formula one stuff and that

formula one has just brought me a lot of joy
joey the clown was a clown i grew up watching

in charlotte north carolina and at the end
of the show he used to always say you know

all we have in this world is each other and i
just love when when buck and billy ray just talks

about being kind just be kind help somebody
out just be kind you know it's like anger

take it takes less energy to be kind than it does
to be mean it takes a lot of energy to be angry

to be mean to be a douche that takes just eats
you up all righty all secure in sector seven woo

buddy listen to the pressure when i release this

yeah that's nine balls of pressure

vigilant and secure including my wife and
she'll hurt you with words what she'll do
