one of the most prestigious

and well-known homes in Summerville.

It's gonna be so much fun,

but it's also gonna be a lot of work.

So we are trying to soak up every bit of these

last few relaxing moments while we still can.

of Summerville, South Carolina.

It's filled with historic homes.

It's really important to us

to preserve the history of these homes.

and the creativity to these projects.

And he does all the hard work.

[Mike] It's the most famous home in Summerville.

Elizabeth Arden bought the house in 1938.

And everybody calls it the "red door."

[Gray] Never in a million years did I think

that I would be working on the Arden house.

Hey, there's Charlie.

[Gray] She was an extremely famous businesswoman

who built a cosmetic empire,

and her signature branding was the red door.

[Mike] What I did discover,

is she changed the color of that door for every season,

and the final color that she painted it was the red door.

I can't believe that we're getting an opportunity

to leave our imprint on such an important house.

Oh, look how pretty!

Ron and Allison moved here recently from Ohio.

They were looking for a great place to plant some roots,

and I can't wait to see what they're thinking,

and just get started. It feels surreal.

You guys just bought into a piece of history.

Do you know what year this house was built?

-Yeah. -And what brought you to Summerville?

[Allison] So my daughter's getting married,

and she called and said, "I'm not getting married in Ohio.

Can you come and help with the wedding?"

Is she getting married here, in the backyard?

[Allison] It's awesome, she's gonna be marrying outside

on the lawn in four months,

so a little bit of a deadline, here.

Not to put pressure on you.

[Allison] Because we're under such a time constraint,

we're just gonna focus in phases.

And so for the first phase,

we're gonna take care of a couple of bedrooms,

because we've got, like, 25 people coming to stay here,

and the wedding's gonna be outside,

and then we're gonna have the reception around the poolhouse,

so we'd like to do a renovation there.

And then maybe after the wedding,

you guys can come back, we can start another project!

I honestly can't think of a better place to host a wedding.

I mean, it's beautiful.

[Allison] Now, we wanna keep the exterior the way it is.

And we just wanna update the interior.

But I'm hoping we don't preserve some of the history,

So, I want the birds to fly just a little bit further south.

So is this one of the spaces that we're gonna be doing?

Yes! So, we wanted to do something kinda fun,

in a metallic, floral, or something like that.

so that we can see some of your secret garden.

Today we're pulling out all the sheet rock,

so we can start with a blank canvas.

This house has been here forever, uh,

and one of the things that we think is really interesting

is there's five or six chimneys

in this house, that we just didn't know it was there.

We found one here in the third floor guest room,

as well as one in the bunk room,

that we're gonna expose.

So right now, I'm just gonna tear off some wood,

and I think it's gonna be a pretty awesome feature

once this thing all gets finished.

Everything is so, so fragile.

Today is my design consult for the Arden house.

This one in particular is nerve-wracking,

because Ron and Allison have a very specific

idea of what they want,

that is not necessarily in line

with what I typically do.

So I'm gonna really have to just sort of reach outside of my own box.

this home is so important to our town.

So I feel like all eyes are gonna be on

So, this is the shade of pink I have picked for the room.

So since we're gonna call the place "Hearts of Arden", that's kinda cool.

So we were across the street, and we saw some smoke,

coming out of the third floor of the Arden house.

Don't really know what's happening.

It seems that there was some old wiring

in the third floor guest room.

So, we were basically up here working,

it was kind of a normal day,

we were doing some patch and floor work, um,

then all of a sudden, we heard a pop come out of this outlet,

and then I turned over my shoulder,

and I see the smoke was billowing quick and fast.

In five minutes, had that not been addressed,

we might not be looking at this house anymore.

[Gray] I am so thankful that we were here.

This house is 131 years old.

And we have to make sure that we preserve it.

So we need to figure out what happened,

and make sure that it does not happen again

before we continue on with the renovation.

All right, so walk me through what happened.

All right, so, this old MC cable.

There's two wires that run through it.

-Okay. -Uh, neutral and hot.

The neutral failed.

-Okay. -And so, it heated up,

eventually, that started the smoke.

but could have been pretty bad.

And this was wrapped in burlap,

This house is no different than any other historic home.

A lot of them still have the old knob-and-tube wiring.

So, we just need to make sure that all of that is gone,

and that this isn't gonna be a problem moving forward.

we're beginning to make some serious progress,

to get this house ready for this wedding.

It's nearly done, and it just needs a few final touches.

[Mike] And Gray met with Lauren, the master of plaster,

to discuss adding some historical plaster features in the pink guest room.

[Grumpy] The entire exterior of the house

has now been pressure-washed,

and the foyer is being prepped for the custom wallpaper.

[Mike] In the bathroom, the tilers have started

working on the built-in shower.

And the carpentry team is building out those linen closets.

In the pink guest room, the built-in nooks are being encased,

and ready for their plaster embellishments.

-[Gray chuckling] -I'll attempt with the cabinets,

and then we'll add the overhang.

[Grumpy] And outside in the poolhouse,

the cabinets have been updated,

and now we're measuring for new countertops.

Since we've only got a month or so before the wedding,

where are you with the special gift?

I'm gonna build them a custom bench

out of some repurposed wood from their home,

so they can sit outside in their garden,

and enjoy that beautiful view of their back yard.

[Mike] I've got the seat built,

I've got some legs cut,

and, uh, so far, it's going pretty well.

I think it's gonna turn out to be pretty nice,

once I get it all finished.

It'll be a good spot when they're sitting out at their garden.

with Arden project, after the fire,

Getting a yes from Grumpy

is one of the more difficult things that I do.

[Mike] The cabinets and built-ins are being installed in the pink room.

The tile flooring has been installed in the ensuite bathroom.

And we're installing the newly-designed bunks in the bunk room.

Now, it can be painted the wild blue color that Gray's picked out.

In the poolhouse, the new cabinets are getting painted.

And I'm gonna go finish the custom bench I'm making for them,

for their outdoor garden area.

that you have in the main section of the home.

There's gaps in them, we cannot re-finish them.

And the plaster work on the archways is just phenomenal.
