tackled their dream bedrooms.

I don't know if I like it now.

While some struggled...

I've literally got an hour
and a half left and these

lights ain't even arrived.

...others excelled.

Tara, your room was the concept that
really saw its way from end to end.

But it was Claire who failed
to showcase a unique style

and was the first designer locked
out of her apartment

and the competition.

Now only seven remain.

Judging our designer's work
is superstar architect Dara Huang.

She will decide who will win
and who will leave empty-handed.

With a master's degree from Harvard,
architect Dara designs billionaire

properties all over the world.

Kitchens are an incredibly tricky
space because it's not just

about how beautiful they are,
I'm going to be looking at colour,

how it functions and also zoning.

So, how it's placed within the floor
plan, whether you're watching TV

or you're having a snack,
is there an island?

This all makes part of a kitchen
both beautiful and functional.

As ever, you don't have long,
so you best get cracking.

There's seven designers left,
and I'm giving them four days

to turn around a kitchen.

They've got £9,000 for the fit-out
from the developers,

and they're going to get an extra
£2,000 for the dressing.

So, I really want to see
what they can do with a standard

open-plan fitted kitchen,
and how they can use creativity

to really give these
kitchens some personality.

I'm looking forward to seeing
something spectacular.

There's a fridge.

The kitchen - this is the most
important room for me.

I've never had a kitchen of my own.

I mean, I live in a studio
and I actually find it quite

overwhelming to have all this space.

It's going to be a bit
tricky in a kitchen just

because the majority
of it's built already.

So, it's going to be quite hard
to stamp something really

unique or customised.

But I'm going to find a way.

The kitchen units and workshops
selected by the designers

are being fitted by the on site
trades at this former

cutlery factory.

All the apartments are a different
layout and include a kitchen island

except Justine and Jordan's.

Turning the basic fit-out
into something unique is the key

to impressing this week...

...because the ultimate prize
is at stake - a quarter

of a million pound apartment.

I feel really conflicted
because it's equal parts I'm

rooting for everyone...

The things that have been
in my head for so long,

and now I get to see them
in real life.

So, we've got a really, really
beautiful slate effect worktop.

Really beautiful Matt black
cupboards, and then just as a little

bit of class and sophistication,
we've got some really beautiful

brushed brass hardware.

This kitchen is all
about sophistication.

It's going to feel really classy.

It's going to feel really bougie,
and everyone is just going to be

Last week, Jamie's California casual
bedroom hit the mark, but he was let

down by his lack of storage.

This week, Jamie has
paired his muted black

cabinets and worktop
with oversized island lighting.

He's stripping back his storage
again with open shelving and one

bespoke freestanding cabinet.

This has been an amazing
experience all round.

One of the best part is seeing
designs that I've created for me

and my husband come to life.

Never, ever do you really get
to design to this level

for yourself, especially,
erm, when you live your

life in rental houses.

One of the major design elements
in my kitchen is that I've gotten

rid of all of those upper cabinets.

I'm replacing them with really
nice scaffolding planks.

Is that going to play in my favour?

Am I going to lose out some storage?

I just hope that it all turns out
how it looks in my head.

Oh, this is it.

It's exactly what I had in mind.

Jordan's minimal bedroom left him
in danger last week.

I'm not sure about the
choice of the flooring.

It could have been a lot cosier
and more functional.

This week, he's gone bold
in his attempt to win

the apartment he's transforming.

Just got the partition in.

So, the idea is to create, like,
a zone here separate to the kitchen.

Put your plate on here and then
transfer it over here.

Hosting, like, a dinner party.

So it's, yeah, it's
a little bit ambitious.

So I think in terms of this
week, I don't think I'll

be stepping it back.

I've got quite a statement
piece in my kitchen.

Sticking with his minimal style,
Jordan has selected sleek black

cabinets, a black marbled worktop,
and splash back and

pink strip lighting.

His statement piece is a bespoke
black room divider with pops of pink

to complete the look.

So, we're just getting the
splash back put in for the kitchen.

I've gone for a brushed gold tap.

The frame of the kitchen
is going to be painted black.

So, it'll make this area dark,
but once the LEDs go in we've

got the pops of pink
on the partition as well.

It'll look really nice.

If I was to win it, you know, my mum
will definitely be proud of me.

Obviously she was a big
part of me, sort of,

going through university,
you know, I don't think I'd have

made it there without her.

Erm, so, yeah, it's just, sort of,
you know, trying to do my best I can

in any way just to kind
of make her proud.

of competition, it still sort

bit spread out.

confident with this.

Last time,
John's bedroom impressed

with meticulous period features.

I especially loved the detailing
on the back of the doors.

This week, John's hashtag country
house industrial chic kitchen

involves dark grey cabinets,
white metro wall tiles and marble

effect worktops paired with wall
paneling and a faux fireplace

all embellished in touches of gold.

I'm adding gold coach lines to this
anthracite grey kitchen.

Erm, I'm using this tape.

This is not bling.

This is a coach line.

Coach lines have been used around
country houses for 400 years.

I'm not an interior designer.

I'm an actor.

So, for me, I think that what I'm
doing is a style that I know,

and, more importantly,
I like, I like what I'm doing.

Course you can do too
much country house.

There's a very fine line
between the country house look

and your granny's front room,
and it's a line I'm fairly confident

that I know where that is.

Do you know what?

That's why it's tape.

I don't like it.

The theme of my kitchen is spice.

Claire's jungle spa bedroom
wowed Dara last week,

especially her hand-painted mural.

I was incredibly impressed
with that jungle wall mural.

I couldn't believe
you hand-painted that.

This week, Claire's spicy kitchen
uses a bright orange colour scheme

to contrast with her dark units,
and she's getting her

paint brush out again.

This time it's a giant red chilli
mural to tie it all together.

I think this is going to work really
well because the colours

I'm using on the walls
and within the mural

are going to be really bright.

So, it's going to hit the brief
as in terms of colour.

My mum and dad are Northern Irish
and they adopted me from Sri Lanka

when I was six weeks old.

I grew up living on potatoes.

I then eventually moved to England
and got introduced to Sri Lankan

cuisine and that was it from there.

I was just, like, everything
was extra, extra spicy, extra hot.

But following Dara's feedback
that her bedroom needed seating,

Claire has made the spicy decision
to change her design this morning.

I went and I saw, these,
like fruit barrels.

LAUGHING: These are my seats,
which is probably not going to work

because the height of me
and the height of them,

I actually can't even,
one, get up onto them,

or, yeah, they just don't sit...

They don't sit obviously neatly
with, erm, the island,

which is very frustrating.

So, yeah, definitely
feeling the pressure now.

What am I actually going to do?

to create their dream kitchens

in a battle to win a quarter
of a million pound apartment.

This is a life-altering prize.

They're embarking on this radical
competition to uncover raw design

talent that can surprise even them.

We've done hundreds,
if not thousands of kitchens,

and to see how they've gone
for either practicality

or entertainment value.

Yeah, it's great and dead exciting
to see the alternatives.

Most people keep their kitchens
for probably 7, 10, 12, 15 years,

if not longer sometimes.

So, you've got to get
this one right.

They're not here to
create a show home -

they're here to create their home.

All designers have pre-selected
their kitchen units from Tim

and Adam's suppliers.

Patrycja has gone
for a classic look.

The plan for this week
is just to have something

nice, sleek and modern.

Right now it looks very,
very basic and simple, I think.

But my plan is just to put
a kind of really big

block colour wall mural,
erm, because I don't feel

like the kitchen here has
enough colour in it,

to be honest.

The second week, we're doing
the area in the house,

which I'm least confident
in designing, which is the kitchen.

Last time, Patrycja's
brutalist bedroom didn't feel

cohesive enough for Dara.

I was a little bit confused
on what the concept was.

In an attempt to keep
it simple this week,

Patrycja has gone for dark cabinets,
marble worktops paired with terrazzo

splash back and a bold
wall and ceiling mural

to tie her scheme together.

I'm going to have my first look.

It's definitely not
what I was expecting

because I was kind...

I...I thought that it was going
to be black and white,

but it is creamy coloured.

SHE SIGHS

I am the youngest
contestant in this competition.

There's people who have years
and years more experience

than I have in interior design.

You know, they have actual
interior design experience.

I just feel like when I was doing
the designing for this,

I just should have been a little bit
more careful with the

worktop combination.

Next time, I know that
I need to order samples.

I'm not sure...

They do clash with the classic
marble effect that I have

on the countertop.

There's no question about that.

However, I think it is
a good kind of clash.

I think I just need to, like,
step back and look at the...

I'm just putting in some decorative
lighting to go over my island.

It's just to add,
obviously, task lighting.

So, when I'm cooking
or preparing food.

I have got some wooden light

kind of, enticing.

Tara impressed with the boudoir
bedroom packed with impeccable

coordination and styling.

Your room was the concept that
really saw its way from end to end.

For her kitchen, she has selected
a green herringbone tiled

splash back, offset by earthy green
and wooden kitchen cabinets,

a bold terrazzo kitchen
island and an upcycled

freestanding storage unit.

Because there's not a lot
of cupboard space in the kitchen,

I thought it was really important
to add, you know, a trolley.

It's just a really
practical item of storage.

I am painting my kitchen trolley
because I hate it and it's got these

really horrible tiles on.

And so I'm going to probably paint
that with tile paint

and possibly a pattern on top,
but I haven't really

got that far yet.

I was really confident
with my design last week,

but still had absolute anxiety.

It's just the process of it
which is absolutely terrifying.

It's nice to see the
backsplash being installed.

I always want to challenge myself,
because I think that when you put

yourself in an uncomfortable
or challenging situation,

yourself in an uncomfortable

you adapt and you grow.

The bedroom was just
an introduction of me.

I would say that the kitchen and
living room are one step further.

We are really deep into a lot
of colours and geometric painting.

Last week, Justine captivated Dara
with her colourful, vibrant bedroom

and bespoke furniture hack.

Wow,

The colours are unbelievable.

You're obviously a very
talented artist.

And for her kitchen,
she's pairing bright orange,

yellow and pink kitchen cabinets
with blue vinyl flooring.

And she's even building her own
bespoke island on wheels.

I'm doing, again, a furniture hack.

The kitchen island that I'm making,
it has wheels on it.

And then you can kind of use
it to divide the room.

First, I'm going to assemble
the chest of drawers,

and then I will assemble the base.

Then I will put the wheels
underneath, and then I'm

going to put the worktop.

I always love a challenge.

This week, it will be the first time
I will be doing the kitchen island.

Just an experiment for me.

So I'm also a bit worried
about this, but I think I kept

the shape really basic.

Not something too complicated.

With all the kitchen units now
installed, time is running out

for the designers to really
make their mark.

So now I'm just obviously
finishing off these LEDs.

I've had a bit of a headache
with trying to get power to it

because obviously it's in the centre
of the room.

So this is the last diffuser strip.

And that's all clicked in.

Just give it a test
and see if it works.

I used to be a chef.

I used to work in a Thai restaurant.

So I was a line chef, you know,
I was doing all the cooking

and the tossing and turning.

But the action of putting food
onto a plate and serving it

onto the tray, you know,
to be taken out to the waiters,

that's what this bad boy is for.

Did you enjoy being a chef?

I did enjoy being a chef.

I went to go on to be
a kitchen designer after,

which is why I sort of knew
like what colours to pick, you know,

how to sort of match
everything together.

Here's my question.

Is this a bit high?

It does seem a little bit
high just looking at it,

and I obviously when I designed it
before, I mean, we're

two tall people, but...

And it's quite high for us.

I'm judging them on colour,

creative with a kitchen,

so I just want to see something
a bit different.

was my bedroom was too stark,

whereas now in the kitchen,

I'm actually really impressed.

I have to say, I absolutely
love the way that she's

styled this place.

And she actually listened

I absolutely love it.

She repeats the red
in the stool and on the shelf.

But then she just has
this like pop of aqua.

here because I can just

you're cooking up a storm and I'm

What I like about John,
the good side of John is he has

a lot of modern touches
blended with traditional.

So he's got like dado rails and he's
got railing on the walls,

yet he's picked a monolithic paint.

When you paint something
all one shade, you're

implying that it's modern.

And so there's this play
which I actually quite like.

Yeah, he's mixing
the old and the new.

But I think where it goes over
the tipping point is just like some

of the small detailing.

For example, like the golden here.

We've got our faux fireplace.

You like or you don't like?

You know what?

I would have liked those
better if they were just

in their natural colour.

Like stone, wood.

Like this over-the-top-ness
is exactly what I'm referring to.

Is it too theatrical?

What is the problem?

Too theatrical, yeah.

The kitchen is the heart
of the home, so designing that this

week has made the whole house start
to have a heartbeat.

I love, love, love my kitchen.

I just don't know what to expect
in terms of feedback,

because I don't feel like I'm ever
in a safe spot.

Your thoughts?

It's a very pleasant kitchen.

It's very hard to mix colour
cabinetry with timber veneer.

And she's done it on the island.

She's done it here, and she's
matched it perfectly

with the tiles, the countertops.

I'm not so keen on the way
she did her lights.

She's very good at fully,
professionally executing a space.

Everything is well proportioned.

I just want her to get out
of her comfort zone.

You have to question yourself
as an interior designer.

You cannot just be always right.

You have to question
your design every time.

At some point I was questioning some
of my choices, but at the end

I was really impressed.

I'm sorry, but I love it.

I think she's done a great job.

It's fun, it's poppy.

She definitely knows how to really
bring everything together.

The island is such a great concept,
the fact that it's on casters,

but it's just slightly too thin.

What is a good and ideal
dimension to have an island?

So islands are traditionally just
a little bit over 600 wide,

and the drawers don't
open very well.

I just feel like, you know,
I've just walked into her brain.

This is what's in her mind.

And it's a colourful place to be.

It's such a crazy experience to be
literally designing your dream home.

But there's this element of,
am I going to be here next week

that is just kind of in the back
of your head, rolling around.

What are your first thoughts?

Well, I think because Jamie had,
like, wowed us so much last week,

I was expecting much more.

So I feel slightly underwhelmed.

He just set our
expectations so high.

wider, which would have been more

functional to put a plate on.

This is not ticking the boxes.

What do you think of the colour?

I don't think the pink
and the fuchsia work together,

because they're just like half
a tone off, and it looks

like a mistake rather than purpose.

And there's this fuchsia light down
here which just feels uncomfortable,

like it's a nightclub all day.

Jordan really wanted
to showcase minimal high-end

looks in this kitchen.

Has he done that?

I guess you could say it's
minimal, but I'm not sure

about the high-end looks part.

I'm really trying to kind of work
on what Dara told me to kind

of build up my confidence
in the design and then stick

to a clear one theme.

What do you think?

Well, I have to say,
I am blown away.

I love her use of paint.

I love how she's tied in the black
here with the curtain,

with the steel beam.

Now, the only thing I see
which to me was a little bit

of a mismatch is the terrazzo
and the countertop.

Yeah.

She thought it was going to be
a different colour.

I know Patrycja is the youngest
contestant, but professionally,

what you should ideally do is to get
a large enough sample where you can

actually start to put samples next
to each other to make sure that

that is exactly what you are
ordering, to really start to see

the colourways playing
with each other.

But this to me finally feels
like a luxe kitchen with style,

and it's really just well executed.

It's not just a concept.

with all the apartments now locked,
only six will open, leaving one

designer locked out and going home.

If I was to be locked out now,
I'd be absolutely gutted.

Like I've so much more to give.

In this brand-new development
in Sheffield, seven designers have

had four days and £11,000
to create their dream

kitchen in a bid to win
a quarter of a million pound

apartment mortgage free.

The owners of the development,
Tim and Adam, are using this

experiment to uncover fresh design
talent bold enough to reward

with one of the apartments.

So far, the gamble's paying off.

Flipping heck.

Oh, my God.

Why would anybody ever walk in this
room and not immediately smile?

I would not have thought of this.

That's really cool, isn't it?

Hmm.

OK.

One thing's true.

You know, if no-one really
hates it, no-one's ever

going to really love it either.

So that kind of goes in its favour.

I think I might hate it,
If I'm honest with you.

It's a bit bare.

It's like missing layers.

It's not making me go wow.

Yeah, not quite finished it.

Yeah.

We've gone heavy on neon again.

But to have the light behind
you when you're trying to prep food

means you're just constantly
in a shadow.

Yeah.

And then it will make
the food look horrendous.

Winning for me would be stability.

It would be giving my kids
the life that I feel

I can't actually reach for.

I can't get there on my own.

So, yeah, winning would
be everything to me.

Whilst I'm confident in my design,
I can't be complacent.

I'm in this to win this.

But then again, so is everyone else.

amazing talent with colours

and being bold and creative.

However, you just really
need to continue working

on your craftsmanship.

look next to each other.

that is very you, and that's

that minimal vibe.

However, the function and the way
that it's kind of placed

in the space could be
better thought about.

Jamie, you have this beautiful
and comfortable palette.

However, don't forget how much
thought goes into styling,

because that shows zoning.

I hit the brief to the T.

Something that I'm worried
about is whether there

is a clear theme or not.

I'm not worried, but I'm
eager to see the result.

I'm feeling really, really happy,
really relieved to still be

in the competition.

I was expecting a red, actually.

I was like, It's going to be red,
it's going to be red.

And then, yeah.

I'm really thrilled.

I'm really excited about being
here for another week.

I'm through to next week,
which is absolutely insane.

It's obviously so shattering.

I mean, I put a lot of work into it.

I had a clear vision.

I've learned a lot.

Just been an amazing experience.

Sad, obviously.

I was looking forward
to obviously what was to come.

But, you know, we're here now.

I just felt like his kitchen
was just a little bit less

overwhelming when I walked in.

I didn't get that wow feeling.

The competition is down
to six designers.

One will win their dream apartment.

It certainly gives me a lot more
confidence going into the next week,

although I do feel like it's kind
of a bittersweet feeling

because someone has gotten
locked out this week.
