They operated in stages.

These first three stages
were just giant fuel tanks

that were discarded
as the rocket got

higher and higher
to shed payload

and to maximize efficiency
as the atmosphere thinned out.

But to get to the moon,

the CS module had to detach

from these first three stages
and fire up its own engine.

This propelled the astronauts

almost a quarter
of a million miles-
