My new clients have three kids of their own,

so I can definitely relate, and right now,

what they desperately need is a more functional kitchen.

This kitchen was a hot ticket about 10 years ago.

You know, it was in to have dark wood,

dark granite, but we really did not think about functionality

when we designed it.

And it's become really problematic.

Which parts, particularly?

Here is something we didn't think about.

We access this drawer quite a bit.

It's our junk drawer and that just...

Yeah, I see this sometimes in flipping houses

when someone just, yep, it's just all these surprises.

So if I want to get anything in the drawer,

I have to open this bad boy. - Oh.

And then I can access my junk drawer.

That's definitely got to go.

- Okay. - Okay. So in here...

The fireplace becomes really problematic with where it is.

- It sticks out pretty far. - It does.

I don't know, honey, if you want to show her

what happens when people come through the door.

It's like literally a death trap.

I'll show you. We have people coming inside from outside.

- Uh-huh. - They walk in,

and the first thing they want to do is walk over here

and then-- Oh! - Oh, God!

Yeah, it's taken out quite a few of our guests.

And then, what's this in the corner?

Oh, so this is something that Jenny actually despises.

That is my man corner and actually the only part

of the kitchen that I'm allowed to have.

Well, this is pretty roomy.

Right? It's nice. I call it cozy.

I know he loves to, you know, showcase his bar wear

and look at all my cool bottles of Scotch,

but I just I want everything to have a place

and be behind a cupboard.

And this just doesn't jive for me.

I'm like, yeah, when people come in,

"Oh, yeah. Would you like something to drink?

Hey, take your pick."

So, right now, everything's very dark.

But if you had the choice for any type of style

that you wanted, what would you choose?

I like a really fresh, light, bright--

You know, the open shelving, maybe some lighter countertops

and, you know, like modern farmhouse,

but not too, too rustic.

So not too farmhouse, but light, bright, white, clean.

- Yes. Not too modern either. - Not too modern. Okay.

I think my style is a little more modern.

Mm-hmm.

That's kind of what I like. Like a New York loft kind of.

- Ooh. - Yeah.

Like, what does that mean to you?

Just like the modern look of the New York loft.

You know, like a hood above the range

where it has that metal look.

Uh-huh. So, like, an exposed hood?

But, for me, that would be more my taste.

So New York loft with little bit of industrial flair.

Meets modern farmhouse, but not too modern.

So what are you guys looking to spend here?

If you could stay 60 and under, that would be ideal.

So, right away, in here it just feels dark because the painting

and all the colors is just a lot of brown.

I just picture everything white, airy, open.

Get rid of the fireplace brick and the trip hazard.

Do something much more fresh and modern.

In here, in the kitchen, totally light and bright.

Get rid of the peninsula.

Do a nice large island with an overhang.

so you guys can still eat here. - Great.

And then we can shift the dishwasher over to the left.

That way you can access your drawers

without the hazard of them clipping the dishwasher,

do a counter-depth refrigerator,

which will provide much more room.

Open up this wall right here so we have a better flow.

All new flooring throughout. Get rid of the soffit.

That way the ceilings are higher

and everything's going to feel more open, as well.

Perfect.

And we will work on a man area for you.

So, okay, I wanted to get away from anything too dark

because the kitchen was really dark before.

So what I was thinking is that we do all white upper

and lowers back here,

that way it really just brightens everything up

and it's more of that modern farmhouse,

more traditional look.

But then we can spice it up a little bit

with a charcoal island.

I love that.

I-- I was hoping more of the,

if you were gonna do a different with the island,

maybe go with the lighter.

Oh, so you were thinking in reverse?

We're trying to get away from the dark.

I feel like that'd be way too dark.

You could switch it, but you did have the dark kitchen before,

so I was kind of trying to mix things up and go more bright.

This is a quartz marble, so it's durable.

You could spill on it,

you can do anything you like with it, and has a soft veining.

So it's not too harsh. I know you said you didn't

want anything too harsh of veining or too harsh colors.

This would be sort of how it looks against the cabinet.

You have this material right here.

I like that. I like that lot.

It's very-- It's very modern.

What?

It is a bit more masculine,

more New York loft, but I do really like the shape.

So this is kind of a take on a plain white subway.

If you feel this, it has a really nice texture and a sheen

to it that looks--

when it hits the light, it looks really pretty.

And if you see that against the white,

I like it because the sheen really stands out.

So it doesn't just blended in.

I really like this one.

To me, this-- I know this is more your style.

It just feels real kind of cold to me.

It's always awkward when one spouse overrides the other.

I know this is Jenny's dream kitchen,

but I can see that Anthony is starting to give up.

My worry is that he's going to end up with something

that he doesn't really like or want, and that's not good.

And another thing I wanted to bring up is I know

Izzy accidentally dropped the double oven

and he's going to replace it.

So I wanted to propose, instead, a slide-in range.

If we combine the oven with the cooktop,

it'll let us extend the countertop

all the way to the pantry

and give you the extra prep space,

which I kind of feel you guys need.

For sure, yeah.

I would love to have more prep space to work with.

You know, I wanted the double ovens,

but if he if he gets us a range,

you know, hopefully it's a bigger one.

And that also takes away from the all white

So I think, by putting the floating shelves,

it's not going to look like--

you're not going to feel like it feels uneven.

all the way around the window.

the floating shelves on there, it will just look beautiful.

This will definitely be a statement piece,

all the tile right through here,

that we can also lay in a herringbone, as well.

I for sure don't like this.

Something about the uniform look of the squares.

So I kind of like the idea

of maybe doing something that's darker.

Because the walls are going be white.

So, my husband built this super cool bar area in our house,

so bear in mind, the back of the cubbyhole is going to be blocked off.

Only on the back half. And then staggering the shelves.

is if this, in the recess up here,

if you fit some recessed lights so it shone down,

and these were made of half-inch glass

so they were translucent,

you'll be out of all the glasses on, and it would all light up

and it would become quite a nice feature.

And experimenting with laying rugs in different directions

Literally, I got, seriously, one hour of sleep last night.

Hudsy decided-- I don't know-- maybe he's teething,

but he would not go to sleep.

I ended up letting him sleep on me,

which is the first time I've done that.

And then, at 5:00 in the morning, Brayden came in and threw up.

So everyone's been up since 5:00, let alone,

I've been up all night.

and finishing touches. It looks amazing.

with three kids living in the garage, hanging out.

but imagine walking in and seeing carpet.

Now you walk in and you see these beautiful stairs.

It's so stunning.

Like, changes the whole look when we walk in.

- Totally. - I would have been so unhappy

looking at that old, dated banister.

- Yes. - It was totally worth it.

This is so gorgeous.

Gosh. Great job, guys.

The flooring, everything is so bright.

So it went from really dark, like different shades of brown.

Taking down this wall was so huge.

- It's so beautiful. - Wow. Great job, guys.

I know you lost on a few things here,

but you won big on this one.

And now for the money maker-- kitchen.

It's crazy how much different looks in here.

It doesn't feel like the same house.

No, not at all.

It's so open and there's so much more space.

And that slide-in range. I know that the oven broke,

and you guys weren't too happy about that, but--

This range is amazing.

Honestly, like, look at how much space I have now.

I have prep space here.

I mean, I was working in this tiny little patch of countertop.

- You have all this. - I know. I know.

And then we had that, like, long island--

Or it wasn't really an island. It was a peninsula.

And, like, there was, like, this much counter space to work with.

And then everybody was kind of just bunched up in that one area.

Now, like, we have all this.

It just opens up the kitchen so much.

Moving the dishwasher over there was the right call.

Just like having all of this. Everything.

- Oh, my gosh. - Everything works.

- I'm so happy. - Amazing.

I can't wait to cook in here.

Last but not least...

Actually, this is one of my favorite parts of the house.

The new fireplace.

- That fireplace. Oh, my gosh. - So beautiful.

I love the herringbone pattern, and the reclaimed wood mantle

is just-- it's, like, not too rustic but not too modern.

It's the perfect blend.

It's no longer a trip hazard.

Trip hazard's gone. I can see that.

So you didn't get your TV in here.

- Thank goodness. - Are you okay with that?

Actually, yeah.

- It's right there. - Yeah. It's right here.

I mean, especially with this wall open now.

Yeah, I'm totally fine.

That was--- That was not a great argument on my part.

Jenny wanted more, like, clean, light and bright,

nothing too modern, more timeless.

And I know, Anthony, you wanted more like New York loft.

So, with the end result, how do you guys feel?

It's amazing. I mean, as long as she's completely happy,

that's-- I'm totally solid.

I love it. It's light. It's bright. It's airy.

It's totally exceeded expectations

So all the torture was worth it.

It was totally worth it. And it looks so amazing.

I just can't even believe this is my house, honestly.

Yeah, it doesn't feel like our house.
