A plane has apparently crashed
into the World Trade Center,

one of the very top towers
on the World Trade Center.

How could that occur?

What type of a plane was it?

Just got the report
a minute ago.

We'll have details coming up
at the top of the hour on that.

We're getting word
and we're seeing pictures

of a plane possibly have hitting
the World Trade Center

in New York.

Fred Story:
Now, here's what we know--

A twin-engine Cessna airplane

flew right smack
into the World Trade Center

at the 110th floor.

Barnard: Man,
this is unbelievable.

Apparently the report is that
a commuter jet had some trouble

and crashed into the...

Oh, we've heard reports that
it's both the southern tower

and the northern tower.

Looks to me to be
the southern tower.

Story: All eyes
in the United States

are on a breaking story
that has just occurred

within the last five minutes.

Bill Wills: This is the big one,
Newsradio WTAM 1100 Cleveland.

is with us.

Horrific pictures
coming out of New York, R.C.

R.C. Bauer: Unbelievable, smoke,
thick black smoke and flames

are just pouring out
of the upper floors

of one of the towers
of the World Trade Center.

It looks like a twin-engine jet
has crashed right into the side

of one of the buildings,

and there are reports on CNN
that this is a 737,

it would be a commercial
passenger plane,

although that's unconfirmed
at this report.

Wills: This is just
a horrible tragedy.

Smoke coming out of the
World Trade Center in New York,

Keep it here

Casey Coleman alongside.

Casey, again,
this was all early reports,

some sort of a 737 is what
the early report was.

You've flown in and out
of New York.

Casey Coleman: Right.

Wills: I'm just trying
to imagine flight patterns.

I know you fly
over the city, but I...

Coleman: You don't come...

Wills: Something horrible
has happened here.

Coleman: Something horrible

or someone did it intentionally,

Wills: My God, that would be

a horrible, horrible,
horrible tragedy

if these reports are true.

any further update on that?

Story: Yeah, Dan, I just saw
on TV, it looks horrendous.

Huge amount, a veil of smoke,

and it looks like
it's really done some damage.

It looks like a serious hit,
and all we've got

is this one sentence
right here from AP, Dan.

a 200-foot ball of fire

that came out just now.

And that is on the other tower.

Barnard: They showed
another airplane.

Zepp: They just reported
a second plane

just hit the second tower.

Traen:
It's like suicide bombers.

Zepp: It is suicide!

Barnard: These lunatics
are killing

thousands of innocent people

on these two airplanes,
in these two buildings.

Who knows how many people
on the ground are dead?

Zepp: And for what?
Barnard: And for what?

Barnard: Did we ever think
there'd be another date

that would live in infamy?

Let's go ahead and get
the theme out of the way

because I want
to jump right in.

I know by now you're
just starting to sink in.

Listen to what I'm telling you.

There has been--I'm going
to call it a terrorist attack,

and I'm going way out on a limb,
but that's my opinion--

on the World Trade Center towers
in New York.

And then just a matter of maybe
six, seven, eight minutes ago,

we got a report that they,
that another plane had crashed

into the other tower
of the World Trade Center.

I don't know whether
you're following this or not,

we're going to continue
to follow it

and gonna talk about it
this morning.

Jeb Bush: We don't have
all the information,

but it's been confirmed
that two planes

have hit the World Trade towers,
World Trade Center in New York,

and perhaps we should have
a brief moment of silence

to pray for the family members.

Woman: Our daughter had left
her purse at her desk

thinking that it was
just a fire drill.

All they had heard was a...
was a loud noise,

and so they thought
that it was a fire drill.

And when she walked outside,

she got down the steps,
33 flights,

and people were moving
rather slow

and she got outside the building
just in time to look up

and see the building,
her building, explode.

Bauer: The Federal Aviation
Administration has now ordered

any plane in the air
to land at the nearest airport.

Obviously this is a nationwide
security situation now.

Nancy Wolf: Right now let's go
to Mac Thompson in the newsroom.

Mac Thompson: All right,
thanks, Nancy.

We understand,
we want to tell people

that may be going to the airport
today to take flights,

we just talked to the people

at the Charleston
International Airport,

and we do understand that
all flights have been held.

Tim Knol: What is happening here
at the airport right now is,

anybody that's coming in
is being told

that all the flights
have been canceled for today.

Pilot: We appreciate
your patience very much.

I'll give you just a very brief
description of what we know.

We have received a report
through our communication lines

that what would appear to be
maybe a terrorist activity

or hijacking has occurred.

Mike Nolan: Every single
commercial airport

in this country
has a ground stop right now.

Every airplane that was going
to depart will be grounded,

every airplane
that is airborne will land.

Brian Barker:
Shock... all eyes fixated

on the unreal, horrible truth
unfolding on the television.

Man: It's just a nauseating,
incredible feeling

to know how vulnerable
we are as a people.

Barker: Hundreds of people
pulled off their waiting planes.

The airports closed,
travel plans ruined.

But no one can stop watching,
stop wincing.

Man: If somebody is willing
to give up their life

to create this, there's no way
we're going to stop it.

Barker: Virtually everyone
says they're angry.

Man: Well, let's find out
who did it and let's get them.

Barker: And there are stories
of total displacement.

A rare sight
on the Colorado Springs tarmac,

this Southwest Airlines plane
was forced to land

while on its way to Las Vegas.

Man: We're just flying
and all of a sudden,

they're like, you know,
"We got a national emergency.

"We have to land the plane

in the next closest area,
Colorado Springs,"

so, I don't know, we ain't going
nowhere for a while.

Woman: Again,
try to stay in this area.

Barker: More than a hundred
people are forced to stay here

for no telling how long,

but that's not what's important,
people say.

People here want answers.

Man: We're going
to stick together,

they're going to show
that we are a strong country.

This will be a minor setback,

and they're really not
going to affect us.

Man: There's been a lot
of warning about this,

and I think what they said
this morning is true.

They've been preparing
for biological attacks

and things like this,

and nobody ever thought
about some idiot

flying a plane
into a building.

Paul Aker: At Springfield's
Morgan Stanley Dean Witter,

the future of the American
stock market seems hidden

behind the smoking
World Trade Centers.

Brokers watched as terrorists

attacked the heart
of American capitalism.

Woman: I'm not worried
about the market.

Aker: Most everyone
in this Dean Witter office

worked in the Trade Center
buildings at different times.

Man: When you're up there,

the Statue of Liberty
is about that big.

Aker: They have co-workers,
friends who still work there.

Man: Were they able to get out?
I don't know.

Aker: The explosions destroyed
at least some of those offices.

Man: There's been
some tears shed.

Woman: The market will come
back, but our friends won't.

[applause]

President Bush:
Ladies and gentlemen,

this is a difficult moment
for America.

I, unfortunately, will be going
back to Washington

after my remarks.

Secretary Rod Paige
and the Lieutenant Governor

will take the podium
and discuss education.

I do want to thank the folks
here at Booker Elementary School

for their hospitality.

Today we've had
a national tragedy.

Two airplanes have crashed
into the World Trade Center

in an apparent terrorist attack
on our country.

Reporter: Are you worried
about your brother?

Jeb Bush: Absolutely
I'm worried about my brother.

He is obviously
the number one target

for terrorist acts
in the world,

but he's got the best protection
in the world, as well.

Reporter: Knowing your brother
as you do,

what do you think is going
through his mind,

and what emotions do you think
he's feeling?

Jeb Bush: Well,
I know his first reaction

is going to be a feeling
of concern for innocent people

that are killed or hurt
by cowardly acts of terrorism.

That's the first responsibility,

and that's the feeling
that we all feel.

President Bush:
Terrorism against our nation

will not stand.

Moon: Ronnie, hi, good morning,
you're on News Talk WTMA.

Ronnie: Dan, this is
the most spectacular, uh, event

that I've ever seen in my life.

Moon: You know, I've got to
agree with you, Ronnie.

Ronnie: Uh, I've been in war,
and, uh, this is terrifying.

Moon: What are you gonna do
the rest of the day, Ronnie?

Ronnie: I'm gonna look
at television.

Wills: Again, we have evidently
two planes that have crashed

into the World Trade Center
in New York.

Another, evidently,
from what reports are,

a plane has crashed at or near
the Pentagon in Washington.

Ellen Qualls: A news conference
begins at 9:30.

Former Governor Doug Wilder

endorsing Donald McEachin
for attorney general,

a much-needed endorsement
lost in the news cycle

where we informed Wilder

the Pentagon had now
become a target.

Wilder: What?

Oh, my God.

Qualls: Seconds later,
his reaction moderates.

Wilder: The sad thing, though,
is we've come to a realization

that there's really no defense
against insanity,

no defense against terrorism.

Qualls: One floor below,
in the governor's office,

Secretary of the Commonwealth
Anne Petera

sees a replay
of the second plane

hitting the World Trade Center
in New York.

The state police
order the lockdown

of the executive mansion
and the state capital.

Jim Vance: Good morning on a day
that is not such a good day

here in Washington, D.C.,

and indeed in the entirety
of the United States of America.

We are broadcasting locally now,

continuing the report
of the terrorist attacks,

what are believed to be
terrorist attacks,

in at least two cities
in this country right now.

Susan Kidd: Megan McGrath
has been out at the Pentagon

for some time this morning.

She's with us live to tell us

what's happening there now.
Megan?

Megan McGrath: We're getting
some movement of some of the,

we're assuming they're employees
of the Pentagon,

over by that tree line there,
by the exit ramp.

Just within the last couple
of minutes

they've really started
moving people back.

They were a little bit closer
to the building

just a few minutes ago.

[shouting]

[shouting]

Bauer: We're getting word
that Mayor White

is going to be holding
a news conference at noon today

to talk about this.

Wills: The World Trade Center
is just coming down.

Reporter: That's how thick
the smoke is.

Bill Handel:
We are carrying news live.

One of the World Trade Center
buildings just collapsed.

The entire building collapsed.

There is nothing left of it.

The whole thing just came down.

They report an explosion
at the base

that took out the foundations,

and if you can imagine,
the whole building is now down.

One of the world's
great skyscrapers has collapsed.

Woman: I drive a city bus,

and I just heard about it
off and on from people.

I just didn't realize
how bad this was.

So I just, I had to
come over to church.

You talk to friends
and my family,

and we're all crying
on the phone, but it just...

I have to talk to God.

I have to know why.

This is terrible.

Handel: Back to KFI AM 640,

You can't even imagine
the number of people

that have died
and have been hurt.

And they're going to be pulling
people out of there

for the next several months.

This is an extraordinary
attack on us.

War has been declared
against the United States,

it's just that simple.

Bauer: This is chilling.
Wills: This is serious.

Bauer: It's difficult
to even talk.

Wills: If you may have
family, friends,

people working
in some of these facilities,

we're trying to keep you
as up to date as we can

as far as locally.

People are obviously dying
in New York and other places

while we're on the air.

In taking notes over the last
hour and a half,

Peter Jennings
at one point said

this is Pearl Harbor, 1941.

Bauer: Yeah.
This is unbelievable.

This is surreal,

this is the stuff you would
expect to see in a novel.

Beth Trepani: We go live now
to KYW's Paul Kurtz.

Paul, apparently buildings
in Philadelphia

now being evacuated.

Paul Kurtz:
Yeah, I'm in front

of the Philadelphia
Stock Exchange.

A lot of people standing
around here out on cell phones.

Trepani: Tell us what it's like
out on the streets.

We hear lots of sirens.

What is it like out in downtown
Philadelphia right now?

Kurtz: A lot of people
milling about,

especially outside
this building.

You can hear the fire engine
going on.

Certainly this strikes
at the heart of everyone.

A lot of fear,
a lot of people concerned.

A lot of people
just want to go home

and be with their families
at this point.

Wills: A lot of you now
are listening in your car,

maybe you're in offices,
that sort of thing,

but we need to update you
on some local happenings,

all because of what is
playing out

in New York and Washington
this morning, right, R.C.?

Bauer: That's right.

We want to let you know
first of all

that Hopkins Airport is not
operational at this point.

There are no flights taking off,

so if you've got
a plane to catch,

don't go to the airport,
check ahead with your airline

because no flights are leaving
Hopkins Airport at this time.

Woman: Sir, there has been
a terrorist attack in New York

and in Washington, D.C.

There are no flights flying.

Announcer: In Pittsburgh,
this may be unrelated,

but officials
at Somerset County Airport

confirm that a large airplane
has crashed

just north of the airport.

Now, this is about 80 miles
southeast of Pittsburgh.

Steve Penstone: The plane
involved flew over the airport

here in Johnstown at
an elevation of about 6,000 feet

with no radio contact
with Cleveland Center,

which is the air control center
in Cleveland, Ohio,

and they ordered an evacuation
of the tower here

at Johnstown Cambria County
Airport.

Uh, this airport
and the surrounding area

has been in a virtual shutdown

much, I'm assuming,
like Manhattan and Washington.

Steve Grant:
There was a fourth flight,

word coming in, United Airlines
plane that went down,

apparently hijacked
near Pittsburgh.

Apparently that happened
just after the order

for all airlines to land
was given.

Bill Folsom: The result
of Fort Carson

shutting half its gates

is miles-long lines of people
waiting to get on post.

There's no denying
it can be frustrating,

but there's also understanding.

Soldier: Be prepared
to physically open up

your trunk and your hood.

Folsom: Each and every vehicle's
hood and trunk are opened,

a mirror is used
to look underneath,

and a bomb-sniffing dog
is on alert.

Soldier: You got to have
security like this.

We've got to keep safe
around here where we're at.

Woman: My husband's on base.
We live on base.

My kids are on base.

My first reaction was,

"Oh, my God, I've got to go
get my kids."

Karin Phillips:
Elaine, I'm on the west side

of Independence Hall,
where traffic is just jammed.

I see a lot of people who are
panicked, quite frankly.

I mean, people are trying
to get out of town,

people are obviously leaving
their offices

and trying to leave town.

Handel: We're now breaking
for news, Bill Handel.
