I think the first time

was when we were filming for "The Hills"

and she was coming over
to organise my closet

and I knew her as Paris's friend,

and the Kardashians

know, had a great work ethic.

She never drank, and she
was always so on point,

knew everybody's name.

Just a very professional person.

needed a foot in the door.

So I was looking for a celebrity family

that we could put on television.

I just remember being
hit like a lightning bolt

in the meeting.

I'm sitting there talking
to at that point was Bruce,

now Caitlin, and he's
sort of rolling his eyes.

He's talking about sports
and going like this,

and Kris, you know,
saying you know what Kim,

you know you blah, blah, blah,

and it was just like sort
of watching a performance

which I had had hundreds and
hundreds of pitches in my life,

I'd never had a pitch like this,

but I remember thinking

we should try to do something with them.

Hey, I'm Kim Kardashian,

and I get to live every girl's dream.

I can't believe it's actually my job.

The original sales tape

saw a perfectly coiffured Kim

confidently posing as an established star.

If you think my life
is crazy, meet my family.

We kind of came up with
this idea to make Kim

sort of the lead.

We made her the narrator.

And I thought that was sort
of a hook that made sense.

I don't know what it is.

Who knows if it's even a show,

but my job as a development executive

is to take chances and to try.

As luck would have it,

Lindsay Lohan's show
had just been cancelled,

following a drink-driving
incident that left a cable channel

with a gaping hole in their schedule.

E! at that time was a successful
but struggling network

and I was brought in to try
to just put on more hit shows.

I took I think it was a DVD
home and put it in the machine,

came back the next morning
and said to my staff

I think this is a hit.

We should put it on the air.

We got a call on Monday.

Hey, Eliot, so, hey,

if we're gonna pick up
the Kardashian show,

I need it on the air in six weeks.

And I said, wait, wait, wait.

Did you say you're going to
pick up the Kardashian show?

Can someone (beep) help me,

like I'm really tired of doing all this.

I'm buying something on the phone.

The first season

of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians"

followed a fail-safe formula,

mixing banality with explosive arguments.

Get the
fuck out of here.

Go to (beep) smooch get
the (beep) out of here.

Oh my gosh psycho.

You're no

I've been involved with
a lot of family dramas

and it's kind of a simple formula.

Conflict between family,
resolution at the end,

everybody hugs, we love each other.

I narrowed that down to fight,
fight, fight, hug, hug, hug,

love, love, love,

and that's basically if you
watch the Kardashian episodes

it's what happens almost every episode.

What really
gave the Kardashians the edge

was how perfectly poised

family members showed no embarrassment

discussing the most
intimate personal matters.

When I first heard about Kim's tape

as her mother I wanted to kill her,

but as her manager I knew
that I had a job to do

and I really just wanted
her to move past it.

So there were rumours
that Kim had a sex tape

going around Hollywood

and she was adamant that this wasn't true.

And then one morning we saw
an item in the "Daily News"

that said that there
was a sex tape, in fact,

and it was being touted
around porn companies

and it was Kim Kardashian's.

She was in Australia
at the beach with Paris

so we called her and Kim was in tears,

she was absolutely in pieces,

but she admitted that
there was a sex tape.

The low quality home movie

had been made four years earlier,

filmed by Kim's then boyfriend,

now forgotten, R&B star Ray-J.

That's just a little taste
of me making it bounce tonight.

What the film
lacked in production values

was made up for

by the uninhibited
performances of its stars.

Everyone wanted to know,

was this a strategic move to
catapult Kim Kardashian's fame,

or were they victims of someone
violating their privacy?

For many it
seemed too much of a coincidence

that Kim's mentor, Paris Hilton,

had also found fame following
the release of a tape.

You remember Paris Hilton's sex tape,

obviously put Paris
Hilton on another level

when it came to stardom.

I was told, Paris led Kim down that path

and said, here is the road
map, put out a sex tape,

the world will know your name.

In February 2007,

the Kardashians announced they
would sue the distributors.

That law suit settled out of court.

I'm going to give you my personal opinion,

it was done to save face.

I can tell you it's not the first time

I've seen a frivolent law suit go out

where all parties involved
know exactly what's going on,

'cause it benefits everyone.

Putting out a lawsuit,

saying you didn't want to be a part of it,

all of it fueled the fire

of more people being
interested in seeing it

'cause they're not supposed to see it.

It is the highest grossing sex tape,

celebrity sex tape of all time.

The sex tape did have
relevance to my decision.

I was a little worried
that we'd be criticised

for putting Kim on.

On the other hand I also
thought that the sex tape

might attract viewers who
wondered, okay who was this woman,

but that can help elevate curiosity

and let's go check out what
this woman's all about.

The gamble paid off.

Despite industry critics,

the audience wanted more and
the series was recommissioned.

Kris pulled me aside, and she said,

I just have a great feeling about this,

and I just wanna make you one promise,

with this family shit
always happens to us.

While we breathe we hope

and where we are met
with cynicism and doubt

and those who tell us that we can't,

we will respond with that timeless creed

that sums up the spirit
of a people, yes we can.

In 2008,
Obama makes history.

He'd soon discover that middle America

was more interested in a
different kind of celebrity.

of "People" magazine.

We were the final kind of
stamp of celebrity achievement.

If you got on the cover
of "People" magazine

you had arrived in the
pantheon of American stardom.

And I go to Washington to interview

the new president of the
United States, Barack Obama.

We are leaving, the correspondent and I,

and she says to me,

so I'll talk to the press secretary

and tell him about the cover,

and I screw up the courage and I say,

it's not gonna be the cover.

She's like, what do you mean
it's not gonna be the cover?

I'm like, we have a different
cover with this week.

She said what is it?

I said, Heidi Montag's breast surgery.

On the cover the Obamas

were relegated to a picture
the size of a postage stamp.

I put Heidi Montag's breast surgery

on the cover of the magazine

instead of the new president
of the United States, why?

Because I still believe to this day,

it was gonna sell more.

You can imagine his response.

So that was the world we were living in.

You guys
pulled up in the same time

like all the sisters and know
what's going on and stuff.

"Keeping
Up With the Kardashians"

had just been recommissioned,

but the family had yet
to make their fortune.

It was keeping up with the Jones,

you're shopping and
spending all this money.

You're driving cars that you
might not be able to afford.

You're spending millions of dollars,

or racking it up on a credit card,

so you can be best dressed,

and be relevant within these magazines.

And people are like,

oh, how'd you go through
$10 million, dah, dah, dah.

It's like that was easy at this time

'cause reality TV

is now getting put in with
A-list celebrities in the media.

So we're going against their checks

which are 25 million a movie,

against our way smaller checks,

you know, battling for headlines.

"Entertainment Tonight,"
"Extra," "Access Hollywood."

So, the playing field had levelled out,

but we didn't have the budget.

I remember if you look back,

the Kardashians were in
massive credit card debt

and there was a bunch of stories

that had come out about that.

They needed money and this show
changed their entire lives.

They were using a facade
house for Kris Jenner's home,

where it was this big, beautiful
home near Runyon Canyon

that was very visible,

but it wasn't even where
the Kardashians lived.

And I think that was we
wanna put on a persona of

we have more money than
we necessarily have,

which I kinda love

the whole Kim Kardashian
fake it 'til you make it

really worked out for them.

Right from the start

the Kardashians had a plan to become rich

beyond their wildest dreams.

At that time, you got to remember,

there was no social media.

There was none of these
platforms out there, none,

so the only thing that you
could get was the cameras,

was the media, was the paparazzi,

driving that level of fame.

So if the strategy was

once we make enough of a
noise in the tabloid world,

once we make enough noise in the media

covers would follow,
the brands would follow.

That could monetize what they were doing.

I was the editor-in-chief
of "Life & Style" magazine.

It was 2008 and Kim wanted
a cover of the magazine

and I was really scared
to give her a cover

because you wouldn't usually
do that with a cable show.

It would usually have to be a big star,

but people were chattering about Kim

and then one night she
invited me out to a club,

with her friend, Brittny
Gastineau, and we pulled up,

and there were cues around the block,

there were lines around the block

and I was like what is going on?

Why are they here?

And Brittny just looked at me.

They're here for Kim.

And it was a moment I
decided to take a risk

and put her on the cover of the magazine.

We did a great body
positivity interview with her

and the cover line was I
have cellulite, so what?

And it flew off the shelves.

It was my biggest seller
I'd ever had at the time.

Women just adored the fact
that she was being open

and relatable and just like them.

Kim was so good at
doing body-related stuff.

How Kim lost 30 pounds, how
Kim's getting bikini ready.

Like I remember always
seeing that as her way in

and this is when these magazines

sold three million plus a week.

It was like dropping a
multi-platinum album.

Once the new It-girl

looked far differently than
what we've seen before.

You know, everyone wanted
to start looking like

Kim Kardashian

because Kim Kardashian was
found to be very attractive

by men everywhere.

I remember we had an editor
at "TMZ" back in the day.

He started to take a big liking
to Kim, he liked her butt,

that's really what it came down to,

and every video that we'd get,

we would start focusing in on her backside

and start saying this woman is beautiful,

the world should pay attention to her.

- Well.
- Hi.

- Hello, what a pleasure.
- Nice to meet you.

Kim
was quick to capitalise

on her unique asset,

and just 10 months after
the launch of her sex tape,

she was in frank negotiations

to grace the cover of an adult magazine.

I'm very excited about having
you in the December issue.

I'm very excited.

Very excited.

The great face, the hair, the booty.

I think it will all go very well.

The booty, he's got it.

I have one little question.

When we get to see Kim
and her mother, Kris Jenner,

going back and forth to decide

it's a lot money,

so it's like and they're
just like just boobs,

and it's like, again, I don't have boobs

otherwise they would have been in that.

As season
two rolled into season three,

the family quickly became known

for their audacious pursuit of money.

Kim Kardashian helped open

their newest location
at 142 West 42nd Street,

where Kim was presented
with the key to unlock

the 2010 Charmin Restrooms.

She was at the opening of the
new, hottest toilet in town,

and good for her 'cause, you
know, look how she got paid.

It's the 5th year in a row

that Charmin is opening up great,

gorgeous, clean restrooms, for you know,

everyone to use in New York
City during the holidays.

This is a great example
of Kim and the Kardashians

not being too good for anything
and just really being there,

putting their head down.

She didn't have any attitude about it.

She showed up.

She had a great speech to the camera.

Her hair, makeup, professional.

Anything they got offered they would do.

There was no no, like, they
said yes to everything,

and eventually that paid off

because they just were
everywhere at one point.

The family
would soon find themselves

fending off false advertising lawsuits.

They were eventually forced to cut ties

with a high interest credit card

accused of targeting young people

and a slimming supplement that
contained mostly caffeine,

but in 2011 they secured a deal

that would change the family's fortunes.

I got a phone call.

Oh, the CMO of Skechers
is gonna be at Mr Chow's

in Beverly Hills.

Kim, you're going out to dinner tonight.

Where?

You're going to Mr Chow's.

Why?

There's a huge marketing executive

going to be eating at Mr Chow's.

He's going to eat, he's
going to do what he wants.

It doesn't matter.

Yes, he doesn't know you, whatever,

we're gonna get you a table.

Kim, hey Kim.

I made such a media
drama outside Mr Chow's

that the CMO was just who is this?

Who is this person?

Oh, man, what are you doing?

Later Kris Jenner ended up
closing a deal with Skechers,

and she became the face of the Super Bowl.

This commercial starts playing.

Uh!

Aah!

And it cuts to a scene

where it's Kim Kardashian
barely wearing any clothes.

It's her and this guy.

I don't really know how to say this,

other than to just say it, you're amazing.

And it honestly looks
like they're, like,

recreating her sex tape.

Like they're on top of each other.

She's making a lot of innuendoes.

The best I've ever had but
things just aren't working out.

Well, that's not completely true.

And then it cuts away

and it's a Skechers commercial.

It's something else.

But the way they did it,

really made you think

that they were playing off of her sex tape

and capitalising on that
whole thing once again.

In 2012,
building on what would become

a new business direction for the family,

Kim decided to launch her latest perfume,

but getting noticed in
the crowded marketplace

would require an unorthodox PR technique.

So you're launching a perfume.

Okay, amazing but guess what,

we want the news to talk about it.

Do journalists care?

No, they're not there to
make you rich and to promote.

So I'm saying, okay,
then it's very simple.

Then we have to disrupt this event.

Kim was at her perfume launch

and Kim walked the red carpet.

Got flour bombed, and obviously
this made a lot of press.

It's very convenient that
at a launch for a perfume,

and while you're filming for your show,

you get flour bombed,

and this is where sometimes the viewers,

or us as the viewers,

we had to, like, tilt our
head like is this real?

Did you really do this,
but you'll never know.

I'm launching a fragrance.

Guess what we do?

You willing to get flour bombed?

We have our discussions.

Kim, team, okay, this
is what's gonna happen.

You're gonna be fine,
you're gonna be safe,

but we're gonna create a media moment.

If we create media gold then
guess what's gonna happen?

Everyone's gonna talk about your perfume,

everyone's gonna buy it.

Are the team on it?

Of course, they're on it.

Despite their talent

for capturing the public's attention,

it would take another
decade for the Kardashians

to become billionaires.

All thanks to the family's true genius.

reason why Kim Kardashian

is one of the most famous
people in the world today,

is because she had a
woman right beside her,

who will do whatever it takes.

Kris Jenner is a beast.

This is a woman a real
definition of a media beast

that's behind her daughter

I've ever met in my life.

I frankly didn't expect this mom of many

with no legal training at all,

to end up being such
a powerful negotiator.

So confident
was Kris Jenner's vision

of her family's earning potential,

she made sure from the start

there would be no unnecessary
sharing of the spoils.

I had this policy saying
that if you become big stars,

E! gets 10% of the action,
and Kris said, absolutely not.

There's no chance I'm giving you 10%

of what this family has become.

And I said I need you to do this.

She said, no we're not unknown.

We're famous because of Kim's sex tape,

and I said, yeah but that doesn't count,

that's not right.

It actually went back to
the lawyers in Philadelphia

and they agreed with Kris.

That they were known
and I couldn't use my,

you're an unknown clause.

I bet they regret that now

if they had 10% of what
that family's pulled in.

The most interesting
part about Kris Jenner

is she was already a part
of the biggest TV show

in maybe the history of the world,

which was the O.J. Simpson trial.

Word has been out

throughout the whole Southern
California community,

all kinds of bulletins saying
that O.J. Simpson is wanted.

He's been charged in the two murders

that took place Sunday night.

Robert Kardashian was
this American attorney

who came to fame

because he was best
friends with O.J. Simpson

and he also was a part of that legal team.

America's
most famous murder trial

catapulted the Kardashian
name into the limelight.

As well as getting O.J.
Simpson off a double murder,

Robert Kardashian was married to Kris.

The whole O.J. Simpson
situation took place

and I recognised right
away the name Kardashian.

I was dating Kris Jenner's father

and Kris was 17-years-old at the time.

Kris came from a family that
was not a very wealthy family.

She was very beautiful
and she was very social.

I don't think I've ever known anybody

who started out the way
someone like Kris started out

1973 when Kris first met

the rich and well-connected
LA lawyer, Robert Kardashian.

And somewhere's in the '70s
I met Robert Kardashian

who was married to this knockout chick.

And it wasn't long that
Kris had the first baby,

and Kris, she was almost a perfect mother.

She was so devoted to the
girls, it was just unbelievable.

Gee, you'd think the
Queen just had a new baby.

In this rare home movie,

shared on Kim's social media channel,

it's clear how keen the couple were

to have their family on film.

Oh, what a great picture.

That's a good one.

When Kris was about to ready to turn 30,

Robert said to me I wanna
make a video for her,

and what we did is we took Kris

and we went all around LA

and she was singing to the music track.

With a
taste for the high life,

Kris set her sights

on becoming more than
just a glamorous housewife

and the couple divorced in 1991.

When the divorce came about,

Kris was pretty much
on her own financially,

that's when Kris starts to
emerge as this businesswoman.

She married
American sports hero

and Olympic champion
Bruce, now Caitlyn Jenner,

who was down on his luck
with just $200 in the bank.

Kris is really what kind of pushed Bruce

back into prominence.

I always looked at Kris
as being the much more

savvy marketing person and
business person than Bruce was.

Him and Kris were doing
infomercials on TV,

and selling fitness products.

We've got the machine

Here you had a
treadmill without a motor,

and you had to do all the things.

So instead of making it like,

we couldn't afford to put a motor on this.

It's like, boy you should
have this without a motor,

because it's better.

If you wanna go slow
you could slow it down.

If you wanna go faster you can pick it up.

They sold a lot of those units.

I think it really just opened her up

so that she could see

that she could really
be anything she wanted

and she had within her,
you know, all the tools.

Kris
even got her new husband

on the motivational speaker circuit

and experimented with
a TV fitness channel.

When the show started,

and they just started endorsing things

and popping up everywhere,

that is really Kris Jenner

putting into practise
what she did for Caitlyn.

When Caitlyn was kind of down on her luck.

I think she just took that experience

and applied it to her girls.

Once upon a time there was a little girl

and she was happy.

As this
intimate moment reveals,

Kim was already perfectly at
ease in front of the camera.

Being in front of cameras really started

when they were little girls

and every part of those girls' lives

was being documented on a camera.

So really their childhood
was a training ground

for what was to come.

The idea of, as a family,

sharing everything that
happens is a huge decision,

and I think very difficult.

No, there's things I would

By season four

of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians"

it would seem that there was nothing left

for this family to share,

but once again, they would deliver.

Kourtney's pregnancy was a big deal

because she's the first
person to get pregnant

in the family, it's the first grandkid.

It's just like the first
time you got to see that much

intimate moment of someone's pregnancy.

It wasn't just a 20-minute story

for the audience to be engaged in,

it's a nine-month-long narrative.

So it really stretched out their storyline

throughout the family.

And back to, like, how
authentic the Kardashians are,

they're even showing the birth.

In the delivery room a baby

is coming out of a you
know what, you know,

so that's, like, they
put it all on camera.

Kourtney's acting like nothing is wrong.

She just is so calm.

She isn't even crying, I'm crying.

Oh my gosh.

It's a boy it is.

that's real TV right there.

Leading some viewers to
question if the pregnancy

was a deliberate strategy?

What was apparent with
our show, and any show,

is to keep viewers hooked, you
need to keep bigger stories,

and that's why on "The Hills"
it got to the point where,

they have us doing all these fake fights

because it needs to be more dramatic

because people just want
more and more and more.

So, with the Kardashians, to
maintain as far as they have,

they always need a bigger story arc.

I think Kris uses her
family's ups and downs

as great selling points for the show.

That's a great way to
