For this course have scripted and

recorded about 70 videos over the past

few months that was kind of hard work

but this one is probably the hardest I

guess you might want to know something

about me since we'll be together for

quite a while as you work through the

Lester's so here goes

I'm not on Facebook it's pretty

straightforward it's just my name I was

born in Scotland and I've lived and

worked in quite a few places throughout

the world but mainly it's been here in

London although I studied computer

science at college I wasn't always

involved in IT although for most of my

working life that's what I've been doing

I started out in IT over 35 years ago

and back then it wasn't in any way

related to the skillset of today but

it's been a real journey to see the

technologies come and go and I'm still

was enthused today as I always was when

I was starting out my career has been a

little different than what you might

expect I started out as the IT guy at a

small data company that grew into one of

the world's largest in its field over

the 20 years I was there my job evolved

from the IT guy to the CIO as the team

grew and we expanded internationally I

loved the way that our product was data

and how integral IT was to the company's

success for the next 15 years I worked

for large us-based international tech

companies such as Lucent Bell Labs and

Motorola Oro's

chief IT architect and head of

engineering as well as various other

roles these were different kinds of

challenges finding ways of applying

technology to make our people and

processors as effective as they could be

I think that to be successful in an

organization we are surrounded by some

of the smartest people in the world

you've got to be able to do stuff as

well as talk about it so I've always

been hands-on even though I haven't been

a professional developer for many years

I've had the advantage of having

visionary bosses who gave me the

latitude to not only do my job but also

find out as much as I could about the

tools of my job - I've always been

interested in integration and the

connections between there since I first

started which is what drew me to Google

Apps in the first place I decided to

first write a book on how a transition

from VBA on the Microsoft Office

platform to Apps Script on the Google

platform since I noticed that many who

are trying to do this was suffering a

little it's a bit of a culture shock

I've always loved the immediacy of Apps

Script you write a couple of lines of

code and something really cool happens

right away so

led me to put in together this video of

course to show how easy is to get great

stuff done in Apps Script

for the past few years I've had the

privilege of being one of a small group

of people that Google refers to as gdes

Google developer experts this keeps us

close to Google developments existing

and upcoming and is a very active and

vibrant organization it's full of very

smart people with skills across the

whole spectrum of Google products this

is a very interesting time for both

individuals and organizations as they

move away from being software centric to

being information centric and the

ability to move around freely across

platforms is central to being successful

in that transformation I'm grateful to
