This film was shot between 2011 and 2016.

Five crucial years for Zineb,
a Moroccan journalist and activist.

I was born in Morocco, Casablanca.

I graduated from
high school in Casablanca.

Then I went to study in France

and I was finally able to do what I love.

I did a master in
Sociology of religion.

As a Moroccan atheist

of course,
I have a passion for Islam.

And religions in general.

I have always
wanted to understand

why it has such great
impact on our lives?

On our mentalities?

Why, being a woman

I suffered so much pression
in the name of this religion?

A lot of Moroccan women,
of my generation

are women with
a double personality, a double life.

They have their private life

and then, they have this image
they have to uphold for the society.

This made me decide
to kill the phantom of the reputation

to not give a damn about my image

because this was for me
to only way to live in this country.

I had to tell everybody
that I didn't care about my reputation.

When they say:
"She smokes and drinks."

Yes. I smoke and I drink.
And I do plenty of other stuff...

and you can fuck off.

that has always been my compass
and my life buoy.

That is the needle that allows me

to sometimes go thru difficulties

giving the impression
they do not touch me.

They only brush past me.

Since four months, tension is rising in Morocco.

Like in other Arab countries there is
hope for more liberties.

The Arab Spring has arrived.

Yes, the Moroccan Spring gave birth to
a new movement, first on Facebook.

The 20th February Movement.
It's as if the youth of the Arab Spring

was swept away,
put aside and even threatened.

For months now,
I don't go out alone after dark.

Like many other activists,
because they were intimidated, received threats.

I can say what I want on Facebook
because Morocco doesn't have internet legislation.

This doesn't mean I won't
get beaten on some street corner.

We have dead people in the street,
torture and a violent repression.

There is no rule
of law in this country.

We are in state
violating all human rights.

We are a generation of journalists
who doesn't say:

"His God Blessed Majesty"

We are not here to do propaganda.
That's why we are considered enemies of Morocco.

As journalists, they forced us
to become political opponents and activists

while all we wanted was
to do our job in an honnest way.

With the election of
an Islamist government in November 2011

the Arab Spring turned to
autumn, then to winter.

I was threatened by the Islamists
and the secret police of the regime.

Not only didn't the state protect me,
it even was a threat to me.

Give your father a hug from me.

Living under constant threat
of an agression or an arrest

is something that can influence

one's psyche in a very sneaky way.

One has the impression this is normal

but in reality, one realizes
much later, when the pressure is gone

to what extend, you were carrying this weight.

This couldn't continue.

It can't last very long.

2012 – Paris, France

When I left Morocco

I came to Paris.

I found a job.

Finally.

I found work that
interested me.

I found people
who could appreciate

my contribution.
Professionally, intellectually.

A family.

A team, I loved to work with.

At last

I could reconcile
my professional life and my convictions.

It was a moment of growth.
A new beginning.

What do we have to do
to get rid of this?

When I see the reaction
of our societies to acts of terrorism

When I see that
the day after an attack

our gouverments say: "Let's bomb Syria."

I want to say: "Stop!
It's not like that we'll solve the problem."

We can only fix this problem

we will understand we are at war
not with individuals or Islamic State

but with an ideology,
an ideology that we produced ourselves.

How to fight
an ideology with weapons?

You fight an ideology
with enlightenment and knowledge.

We can't kill this ideology with weapons,

just like they can't kill our values with weapons.

They can kill people,
but not what we think.
