"samuel pinkney, born august\n4, 1832. Died june 25, 1860."

yes, those are\nthe dates on this marker,

but this is from a headstone\nin a cemetery in pennsylvania.

"samuel pinkney, born august\n4, 1832, culpepper, virginia,

died november 6, 1894."

this is the same man?

According to the newspaper\naccounts from that period,

samuel pinkney was killed\nhere in virginia and the dates

on this marker\ncorrespond with that.

But this is from a headstone\nthat i had found in pennsylvania

in a county where\nmy people settled.

Now, both men have the same\nname, same date of birth,

same town of origin.

But this death date\nis 30 years later.

Exactly.

And there's some other facts\nthat i found at the local

historical society that\ndon't line up either.

I'd be very\ninterested to see those.

The white plantation owner\nwho was murdered was named

robert mercer and\nhere's a photograph.

You know, judging from these\nglowing reports, you wonder

why anybody would have\nwanted to murder him.

He looks like a very\ndecent sort of person.

One of our more\nnoteworthy virginia sons,

lost before his time and\nmurdered on his wedding night.
