hi i'm pedro from coffee parts and today

we're looking at my lean weber hd1

coffee grinder

to me all weber workshop products are

just beautiful i love products that are

well designed original function

perfectly and just built to last in many

ways products that inspire

so this unit came about as when they

were first released i got together with

four others so there was five of us and

we bought the first five eg ones into

australia this grinder was a hand

grinder that they'd use and source the

mazarova 83 mil conical blades

and it now sits as part of one of my

collections

lately it's been sitting here on the

back shelf but i do rotate it through at

home as i do change my home machines

quite often and i think it's a machine

that i'll just have forever there's

something about this machine this makes

me smile i can't really explain it but

the way it's built

really is beautiful

i loved having this machine at home next

to a vintage cremina that i have so i've

got olympia chromania 67 model and on

one stage i had it next to a machine

that i built with a friend that was bike

inspired it's a very manual kind of rat

rod looking machine heavily based on the

internals of a llama zoko and i had this

machine it felt like just very manual

and beautiful to see the hg one in

action i've got 20 grams of coffee here

dosing in 20 grams of coffee

there then we've got the handle here to

kind of keep the grinder firmly placed

and the flywheel

there we have it now that we've ground

the coffee

we can remove the tumbler and the

tumbler sits perfectly

onto a portafilter once on the

portafilter you can pull the center of

the tumbler and all the coffee will

follow through one thing to note is this

cover here really does allow the beans

flow neatly into the blades and reduce

any pop corning now here on the tumbler

the coffee really is very evenly

distributed we can

lift out the center of the tumbler

letting the coffee out

give it a bit of a tap and when we lift

that tumbler the coffee is nice and

centered in the portafilter ready to be

tamped

and it really does look very evenly

distributed the only way to really check

it is to put it through a shiv something

like the groove

but it is a machine or grinder that i

kind of almost feel like it's a sunday

grinder as a daily i do like electric

grinders but as a sunday something about

slowing down and making manual coffee

really does allow for a really beautiful

coffee moment it's hard to explain in

words quite a long time i had this

machine at home next to an olympia

cremina 1967 model

so it was felt really appropriate manual

hand grinder and a very manual lever

machine

very quiet and very in tune with the

process geeking into grinders everyone's

got their own preference there's a lot

of debate between conical which this

grinder has and flat burs and how that

affects the taste profile of coffee

differences between different rpms what

gives more fines for body clarity etc

and how that affects espresso versus

filter coffee

but for me putting all that aside

there's something that

remains unsaid which is how that grinder

and the whole coffee process makes you

feel that moment in time and that to me

something that really resonates since

the hg1 weber workshops has now released

the hg2 which is very based on this

machine with some minor tweaks the key

which effectively is an electric version

of this so still using an 83mm conical

blade and the eg1 which runs 80 mil flat

blades

with the hg2 is effectively this grinder

with twigs the handle here on the

flywheel

now folds in so if you were to store the

grinder this has a lower or a narrower

width

it's got a gear system here so a one to

one and a two to one ratio think

espresso and filter coffee

the adjustment has also slightly changed

with this one you turn left and right

with the new one you lift it up and move

it around and the biggest change is down

here so the dosing cup so to speak is

now magnetically connected to the

grinder before we have the funnel here

on magnets and the distributor which was

full whip

distributing the coffee as you ground

and fell into the dosing cup

now these magnets sit on the dosing cup

and the distributor is just on one side

so effectively the distributor

distributes coffee around this and this

connects in there

so you don't see the coffee flow out but

you do get distribution within the

dosing cup which is kind of cool

and they now come with a leather sleeve

down here i don't know if these changes

make much of a difference

but maybe because i bought this on the

release of lynne webber now called weber

workshops there is something about this

machine that i do like and i just feel

like it's a collectible piece for me

this grinder is about the manual coffee

experience so it is kind of hard to

compare with other grinders hand

grinders are more affordable more

practical in sense of more portable and

electric grinders really are more

practical on a day-to-day sense but i'd

like to know what you think do you like

manual hand grinders do you have a

manual hand grinder what grinder do you

have electric or manual

to me i kind of think of these manual

hand grinders as

kind of exotic sports car that you drive

on a sunday but not your daily driver so

that's the best way i can put owning

such an expensive yet beautiful hand
