Over time, weathering caused the gold

to be washed down and collect on the
gullies below.

The old-timers strike again.

It's all hands on deck
at the moment.

Alex is digging up round
the old shafts.

Paul is looking at the geology of
and everything

and smashing some rocks
to see what's in there.

I'm trying to look for some nuggets,

start getting some money in

and hitting that 1,000oz target.

On the outskirts
of the historic mining town

of Yerilla Western Australia,

Gold Devils Paul Mackie, Melanie Wood

and partner Alex Stead are excavating
a series of old mine shafts

they hope will lead to a gold reef

on their 3.1 square kilometre
Fair Lady lease.

We're at Fair Lady and digging
between the old workings.

Historically, the amount of gold

that came out of where we are now,
it was tens and tens of kilos.

If we can dig between
the old workings,

we got a chance that we could hit
something that they never found.

The Gold Devils plan is to connect
the dots

between dozens of old mine
shafts on their lease.

Old-timers sunk vertical shafts
down to the quartz reef below

where they extracted
millions of dollars worth of gold.

The team are hoping the areas
between the shafts

may hold gold the old-timers missed.

So for us to make our 1,000oz
target this year,

going to need multiple
projects on the go at the same time.

If we can prove up a good
asset here,

we'll split the team in two and run
both projects at the same time.

1,000oz target for the season,
it's (BLEEP) huge.

To reach their ambitious 1,000oz

$2.6 million target, this season,
the team cast their net wide.

Searching for the most profitable
ground across their ten leases.

If we don't start seeing gold soon,
pretty much finished.

And with the setup of their Phoenix
project is still underway...

The samples that have come back from
Fair Lady was 0.1oz per ton.

That's almost four times what we got
from Eldorado.

The team decided to focus their
efforts on their Fair Lady lease.

ago with a horse.

'Venture' Mulligan

emigrated to Australia in 1860
and in 1973, discovered gold

in the Palmer River

drawing hundreds of gold hungry
prospectors to the area.

Using basic tools and techniques,

old-timers extracted hundreds of
thousands of ounces from its ground.

A figure worth billions of dollars
in today's currency.

I really am so excited about this.

Mulligan's like a hero, you know.

I know. It's not just like you are
going to explore another gully.

We are exploring history.

We are going to be walking in
Mulligan's footsteps.

Jacqui and Andrew's plan is to use

their modern technology to uncover
gold that Mulligan may have missed.

We broke through an old shaft
that is literally right here

and it's just hit this iron-rich
layer full of quartz.

This is obviously
what they were chasing.

The old-timers, they knew exactly
what they were doing

and if it crushes up and has
gold in it, then we can sample it,

hone in on if there is actually
gold coming out of this stuff.

Do a bit of crushing.

Hopefully we can find some colour.

If not, we're just going to have to
fill that hole in and keep moving.

Down in this gully, I've seen a lot
more rock

and now that I'm getting closer,

I can actually see
this as all river rock which means

there was an ancient river flowing
over these hills at one stage

and that is just one of the best
signs you can see

as a prospector on the Palmer.

That's the old matches tins
they used to carry here.

Normally it would be annoying
but when you think

it might be Mulligan's match tin,
I'm actually going to keep this one.

On the Palmer River goldfields in
northern Queensland,

Jacqui and
Andrew are targeting an area

they believe was once worked by
pioneering explorer James Mulligan.

So I'm just going to have a little
look around this bedrock here.

It's a good place for gold
to get trapped

when it's flowing through the creek.

Heavy water flow carries fine gold

downstream where it slows on the
river beds allowing it to drop down

and settle into the layer of gravel
between the riverbed and the bedrock.

There's a target already.

Just sitting here in this bedrock.

We are on already.

Come on.

Huh...

Yep, sweet.

So I got a piece of gold right
there.

That's exactly what we are
looking for.

Hopefully that means there
will be more.

There's junk here everywhere.

So that was what they would put on
the bottom of their boots

out here otherwise their shoes
would wear out too quick

so they actually had like a little
horseshoe

straight on the back of their boot.

then we can find out

how much gold is in there as well.

With the amount of small gold Jacqui
is getting,

I reckon there's a lot of fine gold
in there as well.

At their remote Fair Lady lease,

the battery that powers the Gold
Devils' portable crusher is flat,

preventing them from testing the
quartz reef for traces of fine gold.

I'm gonna try
and give it a quick jumpstart.

Manually.

Paul is hoping
that a bush fix pull cord

wound around the spring-loaded
hub will create enough rotation

to the flywheel and cause the spark
plug to fire starting the engine.

This is not ideal way
to start a motor.

The rope can get caught up and cause
more damage

but, at the moment,
it's the only option I've got.

I did not think that was gonna

Alright, do a test on it.

Not saying much at all.

There wasn't even
a speck down there.

So the boys aren't having much
luck taking over there

so I thought I'd come back to
some old mine shafts I saw earlier.

There's a lot of blue quartz sitting
around the old diggings there.

I'm going to take some samples
of this blue quartz.

My experience with blue quartz is

that it either has no gold in it
or it can have a lot of gold in it.

You just don't know until you put it
through the rock crusher.

Blue quartz is a crystalline mineral

high in manganese and copper which
gives the rock its signature colour.

Yeah, I want to get these back

to the boys and crush them up,
see if there's any gold.

Maybe we can come and dig your next.

at the top of the mineshaft.

That's the most we've seen all day.

Once we crushed it up,

to see that massive trail of gold
at the end of it

from such a small sample,

your spirits just get an extra lift
and it's like, we're on.

We are finding absolutely jack here.

We'll fill this hole in, go and
focus on this area.

Now the real work begins.

Yeah, it's gonna be a hard slog
taking them back up here but...

If we want the gold,
it's what we've got to do.

I want the gold.

So we got everything we need now
to collect this dirt.

Now we've just got to pick it out of
the ground

and cart it back to the car.

We want to find out how much gold is
in that dirt

and there's only one way to do that.

Collect it and process it.

I'll pick out if you want to
shovel it in.

So this is the bedrock here.

This is the hard rock bottom
of the creek.

The gold will come down
and get trapped between

the different layers of bedrock.

You can see there's dirt in between
the bedrock

and it's that dirt we're after,
that's what holds the gold.

We'll just take everything
and process the whole lot.

That should nearly be enough, eh?

Oh, good.

We've got a good sample here.

Lots of buckets full of this nice,
crumbly bedrock

with all of this clay attached to it
so we're gonna take it back

to the car and then track down
some water where we can process it.

I just don't want to be processing
this where all the crocodiles are.

There's a bit of water down here.

At least we know there isn't any
crocs in here.

Yeah, we can see the bottom
so at least we're safe here.

Let's grab that high banker
and get into it.

Yep, sweet.

We just found where the creek runs
into the lagoon

and the water is
nice and shallow there.

We can see what's going on

so nothing's gonna sneak up on us
and eat us now.

Alright, just grab all this
high banking gear out now

and go and set it up.

Get the pump set up
and get the water going

and then we can process
some of this dirt.

This is our high banker.

This will bring our water
into the system

then we'll drop the dirt in here.

We'll clean the dirt and it will run
down across this mat.

All the fine stuff will drop through
this grid

and into the bottom sluice.

That will pick up all our gold
as we go

so it's a pretty basic system

but it allows us to wash paydirt
fairly quickly

and gets us a good
idea of how much is in the ground.

This is going great.

The machine is running really well.

Now it's just a matter of getting
all the dirt through

and seeing how we went.

I mean the amount of hard work we do
sometimes to find gold,

we could do
with some good luck right now.

The number one priority for us is to
find Kim 10oz a week.

That's gonna keep us on this lease.

The more gold we find for him,

the more gold that comes
into our pocket.

There's a target there.

Sooner or later, we're going to come

Every push, we are finding 50
or 60 nuggets.

Some of them starting to get
a little bit bigger

so that's a really good indicator

that there's gold running
from the top to the bottom.

The Ferals are onto a run of small
nuggets on boss

Kim's Mount Shovel mining lease.

But with a huge 10oz weekly
target, they are relying

on their 28 ton loader to get them
to bigger gold

that may lie deeper down.

That's so good.
