The Pandalam dynasty comprises the descendants of the Pandya kings
who ruled Madurai in the late 8th century.
After battling with the 'Maravan' army of Tirumala Naikkar,
the Pandya kings first reached Konni
and then Pandalam via 'Achan Kovil'.
Along with them, they brought
the idol of Madurai Meenakshi, their family deity.
The Goddess worshipped at the top of the 'Malika' (mansion),
thus became their 'Malikappurathamma.'
The royal family later enshrined the Goddess in Sabarimala
along with Lord Ayyappan, the Protector of eighteen hills.
Following the austerity measures, when women and little girl pilgrims
make their maiden pilgrimage to Sabarimala
they were addressed this way, the history says.
