This cliff supposedly
has a cave in it.

It's a shadow,
it's an illusion.

[Chief Darren] Some of
our people have run into him.

He was always
pulling a gun on them.

This was a burial ground
that he blew up.

That's messed up.

I found Slumach's mine, yeah.

I'm going to prove it.

I touch one of them things,

and we're sinking.

a remote waterway

on British Columbia's
West Coast.

Here, the land is wild...

and the waters deep.

It lies 300 kilometres
north of Pitt Lake,

far from the heart
of the Slumach legend,

but compelling evidence
has brought the team here,

following the trail

of missing prospector
Jack Mould...

[Kru] Did you guys find
anything out there, or what?

-No.
-Nothing.

-Nothing?
-Really?

[Narrator] ...but so far,

none of their clues
are lining up.

Yeah, it's an illusion.

The sun shines down,

it casts a shadow
against the cliff,

it looks like a cave.

What about the geology?
What'd it look like?

Granite.

Silica-rich granite.

What did Chief Darren
have to say?

[Chief Darren] This is where

Jack Mould
was looking for gold,

and he blew it up with dynamite.

[Taylor] Yeah, and Potato Point
is a burial site

for the Homalco People.

Jack Mould took
some dynamite in there,

and... blew it up.

Holy smokes.

And, I mean,
like, he went to war.

The explosives were so big,

it blew the branches
off the top of the trees,

like, 50 feet up.

That's messed up.

This is a burial ground.

It was sad.

It was just really sad
to see, you know.

This guy was... not a good guy.

What he's done
to the people that lived there,

in the process of finding gold,

that's not how we prospect.

There's a lotta gold out there.

We can get it,

but not that way.

But now there are
new questions

around the prospector's
motivation...

and mysterious disappearance.

have not been found.

the most recent prospectors

missing,
or some would say deceased.

Some would say
victims of the curse.

off the beaten path.

There had to be something
drawing Jack Mould here.

Mould's own daughter

has long suspected foul play.

He went missing in Bute Inlet.

I think he was murdered
for what he knew.

I wasn't willing to give up

until we searched through

every single aspect
of this man's mission.

We're not here just for gold.

We're here for the truth.

So where do we go from here?

I say we start at the source.

You know, if you're
putting in that much work,

he's gotta have
a serious base of operations

somewhere out here.

The barge.

Chief Darren
talked about the barge.

That's where I wanna go.

So that had to be
his base camp.

So if we're gonna find out
about more about Mould,

we need to find that barge.

the one-time headquarters
for his mining operation.

unravelling this mystery.

He was obviously

and why did he go missing?

up to something.

[David] Are you serious?

from his destination...

one of them things,

and we're sinking.

This is a mess.

and I got lots
of logs in the water.

Again, something
telling me not to go.

I believe that curse

is preventing people
from getting there.

The mountains
protect that gold.

into a deadly valley,

where David claims that,

he found Slumach's motherlode.

literally two feet away.

But I left it.

That's where
the curse comes in.

Because I never touched it,
I didn't actually die,

but I lost the life that I had.

I lost my house.

Whatever I could fit in my car
was all I had left.

But I don't like giving up.

Not stopping
until I get there.

I was getting into, really,

when I went the first time,

but this time,
I know what's there,

I know what to expect,

and how to get in
and how to get out.

the team is closing in
on the grounded barge.

[Kru] Oh, sweet.

Bute's in the middle
of nowhere. Yeah.

You've got grizzlies
up there galore.

that'd tear you to shreds.

Barge is just up there.

Geez.

Walking towards this barge

beached at the head
of the inlet,

it's creepy.

[Kru] Looks like
a bloody house.

[Adam] Looks like
someone's house.

[Don] Just keep your eyes open.

Let me get ahead of you
a little bit.

As we came up on that barge,

you could see it was like
time had forgotten it.

We got a full-on
operation here.

Look at all these fuel barrels
over here.

we were given this box...

This is Jack Mould's place?

[Sulo] Well, it's mine now.

So, on this claim map...

He was calling something

Adam determined
Jack's map is a fraud.

with this here,

and Jack and I got together
and made J & S Gold Mining.

trying to mine?

There's a lot of gold
in this mountain.

geological surveys?

[Sulo] Yeah, he did
drilling on stuff,

and that happened
to be my hobby too.

I'm a licensed prospector.

And you were getting
investors to invest?

No, I financed
the whole thing.

he got money from people,

whether it was Sulo,
whether it was investors.

It took a lot of money
to build up what he had.

But you'd also expect
to see a bunch of gold,

so I mean, two and two
didn't add up.

Jack might have left behind?

Right now we don't have

at his next destination.

gonna go take a look

at what I gotta contend with
to get across the river.

Well, it's a fair current,

but it's quite shallow,
lots of rocks.

I gotta make sure
I'm not gonna puncture it.

So I gotta get geared up.

We gotta bring it
to bring myself across.

to build his new boat,

That's when
the Spaniards were here.

The Spaniards were here?

They took millions of dollars'
worth of gold from here.

[Kru] I've studied them
a little bit.

Yeah. They actually

were supposed to be exploring
for the British,

and so they started mining
themselves,

and when the British
found out about it,

then they sunk 11 or 12 ships
in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

We had Spanish
and we had British.

The British won.

This is what we know.

This is what's forgotten.

[Narrator]
Masters of the high seas,

history tells us
the gold-hungry Spanish

were the greatest
prospectors of all...

and the most ruthless.

From 1774
through to the early 1800s,

the Spanish
explored and pillaged

the west coast
of North America.

Their mission--

claim land, find gold,

and return with it
to the motherland.

Rumours of lost Spanish mines
and gold expeditions

deep inland

fill North America's
unofficial history books.

So what was Jack doing?

Was Jack looking for

where the Spanish
were mining for gold?

Yes. He found a ship.

He found a real ship
out there?

The real one, yeah.

About halfway down,

in between here
and the other side.

-Yeah.

That was one of the reasons
why he-- the barge is here.

[Adam] This is pretty big.

I mean, maybe Jack Mould
was using Slumach's gold

as a cover for something else
he actually did find.

Jack Mould
organized a diving expedition

into that bay out there,

and found a Spanish galleon?

[Don] All of a sudden now,

there's a new chapter
in this Jack Mould story.

[Narrator] In Bute Inlet,
British Columbia,

the team has stumbled across
a new clue

left by missing prospector
Jack Mould--

evidence that says Jack,

in the search
for Slumach's gold,

may have found
something entirely different.

[Sulo] These navy divers
went down.

I got some... some pictures.

Here's when
they're going diving for it.

Here is another one.

[Kru] Wow, they were serious.

[Adam] This is
an actual diving expedition.

Jack organized this?

-Yeah, he organized it.
-Wow, that's a lotta guys.

[Sulo] Nine or 10 Navy divers
went down there.

[Adam] So what happened?

-We found it.

But you could see
a little bit of a ship...

like, it's not clear water
down there.

There's a lot of silt
in the bottom there,

but it's in real, real
bad shape.

There's a galleon in the silt,

which would preserve it,

which would keep it
stuck in place,

not strewn
all over the ocean floor.

If they weren't able
to get it,

possibly we could.

The theory is

Jack Mould was kind of
using Slumach's name,

but he didn't find
Slumach's gold.

He found Spanish gold.

Whatever they saw
in that water,

whatever they found,

it's in there still.

if Jack did find something,

could it be connected
to his disappearance?

[Kru] You know,
where Spanish are, gold is.

that could possibly hold
a bear or a cougar,

'cause if I spend the night
around here,

I wanna make sure
I'm not in a guy's home.

If you're gonna be
in the wilderness,

you gotta think
like the wilderness.

This is a fair-sized beast.

If I was to judge

by the strength he has
to push into that bark,

I would say
he's about 300 pounds.

Looking like
a good spot for a camp.

for a night.

99% of the people
that go in the woods camping,

they just find a trail,
they get into the woods,

they find a spot next to a lake,
and they set up camp.

This bottle I brought
so I can mark my territory here.

This way, the animals
know I'm here as well,

just like they do.

The best thing to do,
the wisest thing to do,

is do like the animals,
mark your territory.

Gotta make sure
they know I'm here.

You have a cup
with some urine or whatever,

you pour it on the ground,
you scrape the dirt,

you put it
on the dirt that you scraped,

and do that all the way around.

Just like an animal
of the woods.

The idea is
they're gonna smell this

before they smell my camp.

They mark their territories
to keep the other animals out,

to let them know
that they're there.

Do the same
and they'll leave you alone.

through the bush

to a 1,000-foot waterfall

guarding the entrance
to the valley above,

and what could be the source
of Slumach's gold.

If I come too close,
I can't see nothin'.

Slumach's
been doing that to me

since I've been going there.

He's not gonna deter me.

a day and a half to get here.

I gotta make my way
to a waterfall,

and I have to climb
this waterfall,

which is really steep,

and I have to go up
to a hidden valley.

That's where the mine lies.

I'm playing with fire, yeah,
for going back, for sure,

because the curse
is still there,

and it's not an easy trek.

The mountains and the ridges
around it protect it...

a place you wouldn't go
unless you knew it was there,

and unless you know how,
you ain't getting there.

I'm close enough now,
I'm not turning around.

I don't care what happens.

I get to the waterfall...

...and I'm devastated.

My heart just sunk

when I saw that much water
coming down.

The last time
I was at the waterfall,

it was a trickle.

Oh, my goodness.

How am I gonna get up that?

[Narrator] Off the shore
of Bute Inlet,

a new clue points
to a fortune in lost gold

somewhere deep
on the ocean floor.

If you come across
anything Spanish

and you're a prospector,

you better damn well
look for it.

And for this search,

they'll need some help.

when Chief Darren called

and said we needed
to meet these people,

we were quick to jump to it.

[Narrator] Marine archaeologist
Andrianna Dowell and her crew

have been investigating

seismic changes
to the ocean floor

ever since a massive landside

ripped through Bute Inlet
six months ago.

So we're talking about a couple
hundred years old, then.

[Adam] Yeah, at least.

A galleon, if located,

would rewrite history,

and rethink our understanding
of where the Spanish explored

in their search for gold.

Were they bringing up
any artifacts?

Was there any sort of

credible material culture
that they were finding,

or is this just on hearsay?

[Kru] They actually worked

with Canadian Navy divers
for this one,

and they saw it, too.

This is not a small dive.

They wouldn't do
all that work for nothing.

I mean, for the time,

this is definitely
a lot of equipment,

a lot of technology.

Do you actually think
the Spanish were in this area?

I know that the Spanish
were out here

looking for
the Northwest Passage.

They were pretty secretive
about their exploits.

We're essentially following

in Jack Mould's footsteps.

He commissioned a dive here.

Did Jack Mould know something
that nobody else knew?

Maybe he did find gold
or some other kind of treasure.

Did he disappear because
he found something?

Who knows?

the exact location

Jack's dive team explored
decades ago.

that we saw on the side scan.

You know, I think
this is ending up

being a little too silty.

I can't really verify anything
that we're seeing here,

so I say we get in the water.

and worse for wear,

David has finally reached
his biggest obstacle--

a 1,000-foot waterfall

guarding the entrance
to a hidden valley above...

I made it this far,
and I'm here.

So, one less obstacle,

and away we go,
and we'll be there.

But it's a big obstacle.

because I'm spazzing out
from moving.

It's just one thing
after the other

that's trying
to stop me from going.

When you're looking
at a waterfall

that you're--
gotta climb 1,000 feet,

that could be quite slippery,

and once you start sliding,
you're not gonna stop.

Slumach's lost gold mine curse
is for real,

because I've had
more bad luck on this trip

than I've ever had
on any other trip.

Not good.

[Narrator]

and many don't return.

Ah, that hurts.

It was kinda the last straw

with that water
coming off that waterfall.

Right now my glasses are gone,
can't see.

to fall and break my leg,

then I'm ruined.

All I gotta do
is climb this cliff,

and I can't.

It's too dangerous.

If I try to climb that now
with the way my hand is

and my vision is not the best,

I slide down that,
hit the bottom, I'm dead.

I'm done for.

It's, it's,
it's like a suicide run.

If I get hurt,
my son's without a dad,

so I gotta go.

I'm disappointed.

You know, it was a hard go,

a lot of bad things
happened on the way,

and now I'm here.

I gotta go back home.

Slowly but surely rebuild,
re-gear, restock, you know?

But I'm gonna come back, yeah.

I'll figure out a way
to get there one way or another.

for Slumach's gold

has taken much from many,

but today one prospector
lives to return home.

Back in Bute Inlet,

Adam and Andrianna
prepare to dive

on the same spot

prospector Jack Mould
may have found

a 200-year-old sunken galleon
laden with gold.

Something's under there.

It gives us a reason to dive.

[Dowell] Right now,
I'm really excited.

I think that this is
a neat spot they discovered.

It presents
a really unique opportunity

to see if the Spanish were here.

They might have left
some artifacts, you know,

obviously, the motherlode

would be
some sort of a shipwreck.

[Taylor] Okay, pressure.

[Dowell] I'm at about 29.

[Adam] The water's super murky.
I mean, it's full of silt.

This is a glacial-fed inlet,

which means it reduces
visibility almost down to zero.

When we get down
to the bottom,

something is down there.

the murky water
has finally cleared.

[Adam] What we can see
is it looks like a mast.

You know,
a tubeish-looking object.

We can see
a bunch of wood, debris.

Something's there.

It looks like
pieces of an old ship.

[Adam] That's not Spanish.

his empty truck and dog nearby.

it was still empty.

He was filling up water.

of his disappearance

say that his dog
was left alone in his truck.

I don't care how hardcore
of a criminal you are,

bring your dogs with you.

The divers and the frogmen

went all under the banks
and everything,

and looked
all the way to the ocean.

And nothing?

he was out of shape.

the deeper you sink.

I've never seen
anything like it before.

It's like pure silt quicksand.

and what a horrible way to go,

to be taken back by the earth,

what caused Jack to go missing?

I don't know.
I don't discount it.

[Adam] In the history
of Slumach,

he's written his own chapter.

You know, as strange of a story
and as a legacy

and a rabbit hole
that he led us down,

his story led us on a journey

that gets us closer
to finding the truth.

I'm just glad that we could be
the first people on the ground

to be able to find out
the real truth

of what happened to him...

for his daughter,

and especially
for Chief Darren and his people.

We're writing the final chapter
in Jack Mould's book,

and closing the book forever.

We learned
some really valuable lessons.

We learned the wrong way
and the right way

to do what we're doing.

We got to see in real time,
person to person,

the effects that this had
on the Indigenous communities.

What he did, it's done forever.

It can't be taken back...

...so if anything,

it just taught me
the value and importance

of taking care of the land
that takes care of you.
