She gave me this box
that belonged to her stepfather.

[Adam] Jack Mould?

[Kru] Jack Mould was actually
the first book I ever read

about Slumach,

and it was the whole cover

with the skull
and all the gold and...

-...It just made it real.

One of the most modern

of the old
Slumach prospectors,

Jack Mould's book
chronicles his 30-year search

for the lost gold mine...

well into the 1990s.

lots of stuff here.

Got books, maps, photos.

That the book, Kru,

The skulls are what got me.
And the gold!

in prospecting circles

for his controversial claim

that Slumach's gold

is not, in fact,
buried in Pitt Lake,

but instead,
in Bute Inlet.

He's 300 kilometres away
from the heart of this legend.

According to Jack Mould,

Slumach had a lost gold mine
way up in Bute Inlet.

That makes sense.

You're not a believer

that Jack Mould did find
the Lost Creek Gold Mine?

No. Show me evidence.

[Narrator] Adam has long been
skeptical about Mould's claim--

a story that appears
to check all the boxes

in the Slumach legend.

a picture with him posing

with a piece of rock

that is in the shape
of a tent.

He claimed

it was Walter Jackson's
"tent-shaped rock".

I mean, look at this--

he's also using
Walter Jackson's letter.

a key clue in the search
for Slumach's gold.

But so are we.

we got onto this story, too.

not the legend of Bute Inlet.

from the top of the Pitt,
all the way up here,

over to the Bute...

I think it's feasible

that Slumach
could've travelled there.

I think that's what he's saying.

we don't know where the mine is.

where Slumach was going.

Everybody's gone up the Pitt

Jack and his business partner,

staked claims
on land all over Bute Inlet,

and used a floating barge
as their base of operations.

Jack Mould, I mean...
he was no dummy.

this is a serious expedition.

It wasn't like he was just
out there playing around.

His whole life
was dedicated to this.

This isn't something
he just started overnight.

The items in the box

are personal,

including an old metal lockbox

that once belonged
to the missing prospector.

So what is that tie?

another compelling clue--

a videotape

featuring an interview
with Jack himself.

I would go in
over the last 30 years,

I'd go in a couple times

And we know that we're sitting
on a major gold find--

probably the biggest one
that will ever be in BC.

somewhere in a forest.

up British Columbia's
Pacific Coast

has the team entering
the traditional territory

of the Homalco First Nation.

as we would say, the s'iem--

the respected leader
in his community.

We want them to walk beside us
on this path.

That's what it's about.

been here thousands of years.

Our people are connected
to the land

in many different ways
from the different resources.

Lots of deer meat,
lots of salmon--

and now, it's all starting to...
change.

Can you tell me a little more
about what you're, um,

what you're looking for?

There's a guy--

his name is Jack Mould.

He had something
labelled on this map

called "Slumach's Mines".

Oh, yeah. I never met the guy,

but, uh, I heard-- I heard
an awful lot about him. Yeah.

Good or bad?

Some of our People

have run into him
from time to time up here,

and it sounds like he was always
pulling a gun on 'em, so.

If he did have gold,

or lost everything,

you know, spent all their money
trying to find it

and never did.

It's a hundred-year-old mine
that nobody's been able to find

and I know it's real.

have been here

for thousands of years.

Actually,
this road has been built

on a grease trail.

[Narrator] A "grease trail"

is an ancient
overland pathway--

a trade route
that once connected

First Nation communities

to resources
such as fish oil.

This road was
the trade route

for the Chilcotins
and also Lillooet.

It goes the whole way?

Yeah.

Doesn't the one
from the Pitt go all the way

up to Lillooet?

-I believe so, yeah.
-Yeah.

So those two
would connect, then?

Which connects
to the Pitt, right?

These were grease trails.

Jack Mould knew
about these grease trails.

He knew exactly

where they were, too.

Were these trade routes
still active

when Slumach was around
in, like...

mid-1800s?

Yeah.

My great-grandfather
used to go on--

go interior all the time.

And we're walking
on the route right now?

Yup, yeah.

This was it.

Slumach was gone
for periods at a time, right,

and when you're part of
that land,

you can travel through that land
faster and better

than anyone else can.

He's got a highway
going to these spots.

Just 'cause we don't know
how to get there fast

doesn't mean
that he didn't.

for logging,

they just followed our trails.

the gold out of that valley

when I found it that day,

I wouldn't have made it out.

that are in that letter.

If you really look at the story,

you can see the errors
that somebody else--

trying to send you off
in a different place--

has changed.

three mountain peaks.

after you go over a ridge,

they'll vanish.

that I had the right spot.

up the mountain.

take me most of my way up.

I spent most of my money
to get here,

so I'm totally different
than everybody else.

I've gotta improvise
with what I got.

It's supposed
to go to your bike...

but I can make it hook up
the same way on the...

on the motorcycle.

across neighbouring Stave Lake.

it's like a mirror,

but hopefully,

I can get out into the main part
of the lake.

There, the wind always picks up
through the day.

I'm not giving up,
I'm going all the way!

the rest of the way.

I'm not as healthy
as I used to be,

but I'm stubborn
as I always was!

once I get 'er turned here.

supposedly has a cave in it.

High above Bute Inlet,

Adam is on a solo mission.

[Adam] Gonna go
find Jack Mould's mine.

It's a 500-foot rappel

down a sheer rock face,

to a mysterious cave

that could be the source
of Slumach's legendary gold.

What's going on
with this rope?

Whoa. Holy [bleep]!

Ah...

High above Bute Inlet,

Adam is caught
in the very tree

obscuring the entrance
to Jack Mould's cave.

[pants]

Yeah, this is it.

[Narrator] Jack's claim...

is only an illusion.

[Adam]
Certain times of the day,

the sun shines on this face,
and that looks like a cave.

It's a shadow.

It's an illusion,

like everything else
in Jack Mould's story.

takes him 23 kilometres
across Stave Lake

to a "backdoor entrance"
to the Pitt...

...but once on land,

his mission
is far from over.

Slumach's gold
is a hidden valley

that you don't
even know is there

because it looks like
it's all cliffs.

Like, it's deadly,
it's dangerous,

and it's cursed.

Gotta cross the Stave River
to get to the valley.

I still haven't figured out
a way to cross the river

once I'm up there.

I have to climb this waterfall,
say, 1,000 feet.

[Narrator]
A rushing river

and a 1,000-foot waterfall--

two deadly obstacles
protecting Slumach's valley.

Those two will get you there.

They'll get you right to it.
[laughs]

You serious?

Only three kilometres

from the end of the lake...

Uh-oh!
Don't touch the boat, buddy.

Go away.

I touch one of them things
and we're sinking.

This is a mess.

Deadly.

Like you see,
I got a lot of deadfall--

the dead trees

that are sticking
out of the ground

and then there are some
that are under the water,

and if I touch
any one of those,

it'll put a hole
in this little plastic.

The wind's blowing me back in.

I can't get nothing done.

My daylight is dropping,
so I don't have much time.

Oh, I don't feel good.

Again, something telling me
not to go.

That's freaking me right out.

Back on Bute Inlet...

[Chief Darren]
Yeah, just around there.

We're coming up
on Potato Point.

[Narrator] Chief Darren
has brought Taylor and Kru

to the far north end
of the Inlet.

Potato Point

sits on traditional
Homalco Reserve land.

It's a location
mentioned numerous times

in Jack's box of paperwork

and videotape.

[Chief Darren]
Take a look over here.

[Taylor] Okay.

[Kru] Whoa...

this is a big-ass hole.

This is where
Jack Mould was looking for gold

and he blew it up
with dynamite.

Pretty big blast.

[Narrator] Taylor and Kru
have seen this place before.

There's dynamite right there.

That's a lot of dynamite.

[Kru] Mm-hmm.

[Don] So what is it
they're blowing up?

[Kru] I guess he thought,

because the bedrock cliff
was here,

it would've piled up
against there.

Oh, yeah.

Well...
this is a burial ground.

A burial ground?

[Chief Darren] That he blew up.

And in those days,

they had the--
the burials would've been

in the branches of the trees.

As you see,

the blast knocked off
all the branches on these trees.

That's messed up.

Do you think
he knew it was a burial site?

I'm sure the boxes
on the branches

would've been visible.

[Taylor] The burial boxes
wouldn't be that high up.

They'd be just high enough

just to get 'em
off the ground.

So it's very disheartening
to...

to think that
he could've seen those

and decided to blow up
these sacred areas.

[Kru] Wow, that's messed up.

I just wanted to show you
that this is what he did.

sticks of dynamite.

every 20 feet.

To be there with the Chief

and know that this is
his ancestors' burial ground--

and here I am,

with my metal detector,
out here prospectin'...

it was disgusting
and I felt ashamed.

To the First Nations
community,

that was their ancestors,
that was their family.

But to Jack Mould...

it was just bones to him.

[sighs in disgust]

I get it.
I get gold fever...

but, I mean,
God have mercy.

Like, at what point
is enough enough?

I'm a prospector.

It's a prospector
who did this.

[Chief Darren] It comes down
to greed, I think.

His life was about
finding that big gold nugget

and, um, he was willing
to do anything for that.

It hurts your soul to see this,
you know?

you can feel it in here.

It's real.

You might've wrote a book

and caught my mind
as a child,

but when I see
the things you do as an adult,

I lost all respect
for Jack Mould.

all that blasting.

[Chief Darren] Yeah.
