MACISTE IN HELL. Devilry in 5 acts of fantasy.
MACISTE IN HELL Act One
Between Earth and Hell.
Taken by surprise in their foul doings, the devils, having risen to the Earth,
are sent back free of charge by Maciste to their dark realm.
"But who has thrashed you like this?"
King Pluto
Gerione, first minister of Hell in the absolute government of Hell.
"I want to confer with Barbariccia!..."
Barbariccia, who is in Opposition having lost the last election.
Second wife of great King Pluto, Prosperina, notorious for cuckolding her peaceful husband.
Luciferina of gentle carriage, Pluto's daughter (first marriage).
"With my stepmother did you words most base exchange and... slap her face?"
"The King wishes to speak with you!"
"Me go to the palace?!... Never!"
"My principles will not allow me!"
"But, meantime, kindly go to his Consort nothing's to stop you playing at court".
In order to save his crown and his neck, the King appoints Barbariccia
his "special envoy" to Earth, for the gathering of souls.
"From my power I give you these scales,
with which to weigh the unfortunate souls, Father Satan... Off you go, no more tales!"
"...For you anything I will dispose if you catch Maciste who is the proponent
of virtue and thus our opponent... On earth, however, speak in prose."
"Today we start an active phase! Cagnazzo, Farfarello and Rubicante, good Libicocco
and Draginazzo, leave with fiery Barbariccia on a punitive expedition!"
On Earth in an oasis of peace.
Graziella, the sweet neighbour of Maciste.
Departure!
On the dismal river Acheron.
Charon watched with tragic eyes, an old man with white hair, ferryman of the livid fen.
...what messengers of the gods call...
And the Earth appeared to the Spirit of Evil as
an immense battlefield for conquest.
The envoys of Pluto, assuming human aspect,
descend upon the world with the infernal greed of empire.
Dusk: the hour of temptation.
"What do you want?"
"I want to talk to you".
You might at least have rung the bell!
"What tone is this?... To look at you one would think you owned the place!"
"Wherever I go I own... I can do all I wish and all I wish comes to pass!"
"I too can do all that I wish thanks to the strength in my arms."
"And I with my brain".
"The death of that rose will show you my unlimited power."
"Who!... you wouldn't be the devil by any chance, would you?"
"And what if I was?..."
"I would tell you to go back to Hell!"
"Maciste, With your foolish mania for Good, you are our worst enemy.
Do you want to be our ally? You can set the terms! You can have... anything."
"... gold..."
"... pleasures..."
"I'm no Faust! ...I'm not interested."
"What exactly do you ask?"
"That you simply get out! Or I'll show you the way... through the window."
MACISTE IN HELL end of Act One
MACISTE IN HELL Act Two
The tentacles of vice.
"I'll be waiting for you at dawn. Find some good prey."
"Graziella has a wonderfully pure soul and would be a great acquisition for us."
The evening's entertainment at Court: terrestrial screenings.
"What a fine young man!... Shame!"
"In my house at this hour... No, that would never do!"
Prosperina thinks that the Earth, perhaps, presents Barbariccia too many distractions.
"Mercy trumps convention. The poor man needed shelter."
The first steps of convalescence.
Youth, gratitude... springtime!...
Love, which to the gentle heart is swiftly learnt...
...the mouth I kiss is trembling.
Wine for Mr. Maciste.
"Take care not to reciprocate badly the trusting hospitality found in that house."
"Graziella is pure like a blossom! You must not do her any wrong."
"Who put you in charge of my affairs?"
"Wicked!... you should ask forgiveness for your unjustified outburst immediately."
"I want it!"
"I beg you!"
The revelation.
"Giorgio, I feel pulsating inside me a... new life".
"...so, are you in love?..."
"I don't know... A cloud!... Passing!"
The eternal delusion.
"It's him! It's Giorgio!"
"Still, I didn't imagine it!..."
Must depart... important business... will be back... trust me... Giorgio.
MACISTE IN HELL end of Act Two
MACISTE IN HELL Act Three
Barabariccia sends, down the slope, from the Earth, without concern,
sinners with no hope of a ticket of... return.
Graziella is a mother.
Your eyes fill me with fear!... Go away!"
"Giorgio has returned!"
"But the man who made you a mother is now bound by other arms."
"Forget, then, your useless regrets and, fortified by your beauty,
embrace life... embrace joy."
"Go!... Get out of here..."
"Away, then, from here, demon!"
"If I am a demon, you sinner will be my prey!"
"Oh! Maciste!... My Giorgio is back, but he'll never see me again... It's over!"
"How did you hear this?"
"I heard it from that sinister man, who just left..."
"If I encounter that bat-like creature again, I'll wring his neck like a chicken!..."
"As for Giorgio..."
"No, don't hurt him."
"I'm going now to Mr. Giorgio and dead or alive I'll bring him back here."
At Giorgio's house...
"I repeat that the master isn't here!"
"Lead me to Mr. Giorgio."
"And now for us, kind sir!"
"A few words! I'm giving you one week to do your duty concerning Graziella."
"And if I refuse?"
"Refuse?... Oh no! Look at me and say you're joking."
"It would be better to talk calmly! Your eyes tell me you aren't a bad man."
Barbariccia aims to strike at Graziella the mother.
...Asking in the cottages she passes on her way.
"Come on!... Think about that poor innocent child!"
In every baby she thinks she recognises her own.
"You found words that touched my heart... I will, I assure you, do my duty!"
Maddened by anguish she runs, desperately shouting her child's name.
"Your baby? Be brave, poor mother!... It's dead!"
"God!... You are unjust and cruel".
"You blasphemed against God... you belong to me."
"Pity, pity me who has sinned."
He entrusts the baby to safe hands.
"You evil omen! How dare you show yourself again?"
"Let's see then, if your unlimited power can withstand my strength."
MACISTE IN HELL end of Act Three
MACISTE IN HELL Act Four
With great confusion in his head, Maciste has quite lost the thread like someone roughly thrust from bed.
...and turned against him all their grappling-irons...
Satisfied at having plunged Maciste into Hell, Barbariccia resumed his ancient tasks.
"Accursed one! Will I never be free of you?"
"Never! The verse from the famous poet gives you my answer..."
"Come!... Pluto awaits you!..."
A recent decree states that no living man may be kept longer than three days in hell
unless he kisses a she-devil. Therefore...
"So these, then are... the lost people!"
"With such a chest, steer clear! All the she-devils will compete for him... and a kiss soon will come!"
"You can upset my royal way of life, but woe to you if you start selfishly casting your eyes upon my wife!"
Even in Hell women are fickle.
"I was hoping that my victory over Maciste would bring me the prize of your smile..."
"Oh! How beautiful the Earth is!"
"Would you be jealous?"
"What use is an imp with... horns?"
The return of repentant Giorgio.
Maciste recognises with surprise among the many damned and lost, a host of merchants there before his eyes.
Used to challenging the most violent, he even wants to protect the damned.
Luciferina gets in something of a funk, admiring the deeds of the he-man hunk.
"I did not know that in hell there were flowers so sweet and beautiful."
"Ah! How oft have I been caught up in desires to visit that fair Earth... reasons forbid it... those of kin."
...with his teeth was crunching a sinner...
"Perhaps you're thinking of Graziella?"
"What do you know of Graziella?"
"Oh!... we down here know everything... do you want to see her?"
The "great beast" that replaces aircraft in Hell.
And Maciste eases his anxiety using daddy's periscope.
"Where can poor Maciste be?"
You're sad... Maciste?... What can I do for you?
"Tell me when I can return to my sun!... to my light!... to my Earth!...
"Soon dear!... very soon!... unless..."
"I will report you both to King Pluto".
"No Maciste!... You must not kiss me!..."
"There's no woman here for you to kiss!... That's enough from you... don't be remiss!"
"She's a baby!... She doesn't know what a kiss is!"
Maciste was like those... suspended...
...Then hunger did what sorrow could not do.
"But what trick is this?!"
"Oh! Joy!... Now you have kissed me well! Forever you'll remain with me in Hell!"
MACISTE IN HELL end of Act Four
MACISTE IN HELL ACT Five
The bolge (ditches).
A rain of fiery flakes...
...this night is not one for reading...
Barbariccia's revenge.
"Be ready for the sound of Nembrotte's horn."
That's Nembrotto!... That's his name! Like an auctioneer you hear him declaim".
"Forward, Grafficane and Calcabrina!... To Pluto, to Maciste, go to the Queen...
the good day of death we go to give!"
"Oh! Poor exploited devils! The hour of redemption is at hand!"
"Long live King Barbariccia!"
"Save yourself, father! Barbariccia's followers are attacking the guards!"
"Who kissed you?"
"Him!"
"Claws at the ready!"
"Pitchforks in their backsides."
Maciste takes to the field.
"Let's see if you're worth more than us!..."
"Oh!... hellish power! The devil Maciste is a hundred times stronger!"
Ah me! how they did make them lift their legs at the first blows!
and sooth not any one the second waited for, nor for the third.
The final stand.
Carnage.
And, as always, the masses sided with the strongest.
"Down with Barbariccia!"
"Long live Maciste!"
The capture of Barbariccia.
"Stay like that for all eternity!"
Maciste triumphant before King Pluto.
"Nothing can be denied a subject like you.
Tell me what you want and I'll grant you anything!"
"I ask to be returned to Earth!"
"I object!"
"I accept your demand."
"Oh no dearie! I'm not falling for that again!"
"Go, then, oh earthling, you are free!"
Minos.
But before touching the banks of the Acheron a surprise awaits Maciste.
The ambush was staged by Prosperina out of love.
"Mine! Mine!... Forever mine!"
Time passes... It's Christmas on Earth... Snow and peace...
Maciste groans in his shackles, a prisoner of love.
How long has he been there?... A mystery!...
Thinking of the Earth; of distant days, of distant friends.
The baby is growing up... he is a love...
"Jesus, bless mummy, daddy and the good Maciste who loves us greatly."
...and since the prayer of a child
on Christmas night has the purity to redeem a soul...
Towards the light.
And so the next day...
...and the fable is ended.
