- So you're originally
from Connecticut.

- Yeah, I was one
of only three people of color

in my high school.

I was adopted from Puerto Rico
by amazing white parents.

And it was definitely a bit
of a struggle.

I went into every situation
always feeling like

I had to immediately defend
myself and why I was there.

People would go up
to my parents and just be like,

"Oh, wow, you did
the Angelina and Brad."

As if having a Black kid
was basically like

getting a designer baby
or a new tote bag.

My parents didn't
really understand

that there was an issue
'cause they just walk

into any room,
and they're just like,

"Great to see everybody."

- But I walk in...
- I wonder how that feels.

- And I have to explain that,
"No, those are my parents.

I'm allowed to be here."

They wanted to not see color,

but I am uncomfortable
when I walk down the street

in my own hometown because
people immediately assume

that I don't live there.

I moved to New York for college,

like, right after high school.

And that was definitely a huge,
huge eye-opener.

Once I moved from Connecticut
to New York

was when I was finally
just able to be like,

I am a person
in this massive sea

of different shapes and colors

that we can just be people for
the first time in our lives.

- I'm gonna look
really good today.

Like, I didn't go
to school for fashion,

but I've been studying it,
like, forever.

I will just sit around
and watch fashion shows.

- Luxx, I love how you used to
watch fashion shows growing up.

Basically,
when I was in middle school,

me and Sugar,
we would take out...

That's why we love dolls
so much.

We would take our dolls,
and we would pose them,

and do their hair
and their makeup,

and enter them
into these little competitions.

- When you were
in middle school?

- Growing up, me and Sugar,

we were always obsessed
with dolls,

but then when I was
in middle school,

it was kind of my biggest secret

that I still had dolls,
and if people would come over,

I'd be like, "Oh, no,
don't go in the closet."

'Cause that's where
all my dolls were.

I remember going into the doll
section growing up,

and I felt like I had to pretend

that the doll I was getting
was for someone else.

So that was kind of my way
of doing drag

without realizing it.

I would take my dolls,

and I would change
their hair and makeup,

and I'd watch makeup tutorials.

I wouldn't do it on myself,

but I would edit it
onto my dolls.

Growing up as a gay kid,

society comes in and is like,
"You shouldn't like this.

You should be like this.
You should be like that."

But we came up
with Sugar and Spice

literally because of our dolls.

Like, growing up,
I had the Spice doll,

she had the Sugar doll,
and they were our favorites.

It was just so fun.

It was kind of like our bonding
experience, for sure.

- As long as I can bring
my doll to life

through my drag, then I'm happy.

really kind of gorgeous though.
