That new information suggests

The garden shaft stands

A chance at being the money pit.

The garden shaft
is an 80-foot-deep structure

Filled with water and debris

That may date to
the early 18th century.

It is also a location

Where the team has obtained

High trace evidence of gold

During recent water testing.

We've sampled wells
within the money pit area,

And we found gold
in, uh, the garden shaft.

Six weeks ago, the team enlisted

A mining company named
dumas contracting ltd.

To begin reconstructing
the garden shaft

In order to find out just
what lies at the bottom.

But unfortunately,

The project is currently on hold

Due to permitting issues

That may not be resolved
for several more weeks.

standard designs.

You can actually
date the designs.

These, definitely,
because of the decoration.

- That's called "press molded,"

And this sort of press
molding started in 1740.

Well, that's good.

Yeah.

The type of ceramic
itself is 1720.

Wow.

Early 1700s.

- That's pretty cool.
- Yeah.

- Yeah. It's english. Yes.

Have this type
of pottery as well?

Oh, yeah, sure. It was,
um, it was common. Yeah.

18th-century english pottery

Dating back more
than 50 years prior

To the discovery
of the money pit?

Because the team has previously

Found evidence
of an 18th-century

British military operation

On oak island, could
it offer more evidence

That someone of english origin

Was connected to the
228-year-old mystery?

Are two boreholes where the team

Has encountered a wooden tunnel

Some 103 feet deep
that may date back

As far as the 17th century.

This area is highly disturbed.

that is interesting.

So, what you intend to do here

Is to draw some samples

So, if wood's down there,
somebody was doing something,

And so, what we noticed

Last year with the gold
was we primarily found it

At sites that were
connected or disturbed.

We sampled it already once.

We want to continue to
sample to see if it changes

Hydraulic gradient.

If we can find

An isolated area with high gold,

Then it's very likely

There was some human
activity that was involved.

Any information we
get here, I would think

That you would both
also want to take samples

From the garden shaft, right?

Absolutely.
It has to be done.

So, this is k-15.5

So, we need
to weight it a little bit

To get it to drop
through the water.

So, we'll see how this goes.

So, this hole goes to 115,

So, we'll try to
get down to 110.

To collect their water
samples, the team is using

A biodegradable
single-valve bailer.

As the bailer
descends into the well,

It fills up through
an opening at the top.

Once it reaches a desired depth,

A ball sinks into place,

Sealing the water
sample inside the tube.

This will prevent
contamination from other depths

While the device is
brought back to the surface.

-We're about 110. This
is good because -yeah.

What we just hope is we
get a nice clear sample.

We'll just reel it in.

What we're trying to do

Is find the bullseye
on the dartboard,

I.E., the money pit.

We know there's
precious metals in the water,

And I think we can trace
those concentrations

Back to wherever
it's coming from.

And that somewhere
could easily be our treasure.

Incredibly, this location also
matched one labeled "the dam"

On a reported 14th-century
map of oak island

That the late researcher
zena halpern believed

Was created by members
of the knights templar.

suggests something is there.

So, with iron,
it's a bit tricky.

There are some
indicators of age.

One that we often
look at is manganese.

If we see manganese, uh,

It's often a flag
for a modern iron.

And here, we don't
see manganese.

So, that's a good indication
that you're looking at

Something that's likely older.

We do see sulfur,

Which is quite large.

You typically see iron ores
with a high sulfur content

Between 1700 and 1750.

Of course, it can come from
a sulfur-rich environment.

Yeah, it's on the
edge of the swamp,

- Is where we found this.
- On the edge of the swamp.

Kind of deep, so there
might be sulfur in that.

There's a lot of
swamp... Actually, yeah.

I like to take soil samples

Anytime there's
an artifact extracted.

I do remember high
contents of sulfur.

So, likely, it's from
a local environment.

So, if the sulfur is in the soil

And it's not from
the metal itself,

It's potentially even
older than 1700?

That we've never seen

Another potentially
important clue

In a mysterious
back-filled feature.

It's copper.
It's a copper nail.

Because of all the green, right?

Because iron nails go all rusty,

So you get the rust
deposit on them.

It's pretty heavy-duty,
and it's really squat.

Yeah. Feel it.

It's got heft to it, too, right?

Yeah. Might
get a rose head.

It'll be nice to clean that up.

It's hand-forged?

Uh, yeah.
Which kind of suggests

Boat building, doesn't
it, with copper nails?

Yeah, because
it's, uh, it resists corrosion.

Yeah, and salt water.

A rose-headed copper nail?

Dating back to as
early as 3500 bc,

Hand-forged copper
nails were first used

By the ancient
egyptians and romans

For the construction
of large sailing vessels

In order to ensure durability

While on long journeys at sea.

Over the past decade,
the oak island team

Has unearthed a number
of ship-related artifacts,

Such as wood fragments and
decking spikes in the swamp,

That have ranged from
as late as the 18th century

To as early as
the 3rd century ad.

Could this copper nail be
related to those discoveries,

As well as the evidence
of a possible dam?

And if so,

Might it also be connected
to the hammered coin

That was found on
lot 5 two weeks ago,

Which is believed
to be of roman origin?

That's a really cool find.

It is.

We're finding some
really, really cool stuff

Just in this one
little area, so, I think

- We need to keep going.

Is something significant,

Either just historically,

Or maybe in our treasure hunt.

So, it makes this area

Extremely important

And then, it
was intentionally buried.

For whatever reason.

The fill is old, but
the feature could be

- Even older.

Which predates the money
pit by several decades or more,

Was purposely buried,
then what was it used for

That compelled whoever
created it to hide its existence?

Any find on lot 5 at this point,

Especially anything that,
again, is pre-depositional,

Yes, it's exceedingly
interesting.

I think there are
some very good clues

As to what may have
happened on oak island

That are still
underground on lot 5,

And we're nowhere near done.

I think there's more
yet to be revealed.

This was, uh, not
just a cabin in the woods.

Uh, yeah, so,

This iron pin, there is
some phosphorous in it.

- Wow.
- The phosphor content

Usually comes from England

And, kind of, northern
european areas.

And there is a content

Of sulfur, which makes it old.

- Mm-hmm.
- Like 1700s or earlier.

When you say, "earlier,"

Could that fit a
"1200" timeframe?

Yeah.

So, I did some research,

And the phosphorous
could come from bog iron.

So, bog iron is the earliest
forms of iron that you use.

- Right.
- Well, obviously

That's kind of the
date we like to see,

- You know?
- Yeah.

Because it predates
everything, you know?

- Mm-hmm.
- Settlement, searchers.

Then you're-you're going
back to whoever did this,

Which is what
we'd all like to know,

Rather we get back to
1200 or where we are,

So I think it's a
really important item.

It was probably used to
put something together.

Uh, it's starting to really
look like there's something

- Along that beach.

To me the thing is,

When you look at zena's map,

It says "dam."

And fred is saying
there's a wall there.

Well, what is a dam?

Essentially, a barrier against
movement of water. A dam.

So, I'm-I'm excited

About the possibilities.

My belief would be, if
the structure is there,

It's original work, and that
would be a real "ah-ha" moment.

It might even meet the
criteria of "the one thing."

If zena's map is real,

It's the best lead we have.

- Correct.
- But the very first thing

Is target a zone
of interest, and then

We need a permit to dig further

Into the bog on lot 10

To investigate these targets.

And how ironic.

We went looking for a dam,

And we found a damn good find.

About his exploration

There could be information

We're looking at, that

What's going on here?

So, we have, um,

Some sort of in-filled
rock depression.

- Mm-hmm.
- As far as we can tell, this has been excavated out.

We're getting artifacts
going all the way down.

And what are those?

We've had a piece of
tin-glazed earthenware,

Which... The date range

On tin-glazed earthenware
is 1650 to 1750.

- Wow.
- Wow.

On this side, we had

A lovely little copper nail.

That's a ship sort
of thing, isn't it?

Yeah, it's normally
associated with boat building

Because they don't corrode
as much in salt water.

Right. Exactly.

Who knows how far it goes
in the other three directions?

We just have a
glimpse of it right now.

- Also, there's no modern stuff mixed in with it.

- Which is really cool for us.

- So, I always ask myself,

"how does this impact what

Which, you know, we're trying
to uncover a treasure mystery.

Yeah, so right
now, we're looking at

The money pit area,

But what we're
really interested in

Is in what's happening
in the garden shaft,

Because we're
trying to find a source

To where this gold
is coming from.

Right.

We sent in a few samples

From the monitoring wells,

And those have
been from two depths:

Around the 110,

- And then around the 150 intervals.
- Mm-hmm.

Why don't you talk
a little bit about this?

The dashed black
line that you see there

Is dividing two groups of water.

The ones to the east,

Those, for the most
part, we're not seeing

Any gold or silver.

But we also

Do have samples that go north

Of where the grid is
showing in the garden shaft,

And we're seeing gold
and silver in that area.

So, we believe from
looking at the chemistry,

That area is the area

That we'd be most interested in.

So, this is the last slide,

And perhaps the one
we should think about.

To cut to the chase,

The area in pink there

Would be exactly
where the gold is.

Wow.

So, the area in pink there,

Is the area that is
most of interest to us.

Now it's time to
chase down the gold.

That is just really
interesting and great.

The oak island team

Has just been informed

By hydrogeologist
dr. Fred michel

That, according to
water sample testing,

The source of silver and gold

They have been trying to

Pinpoint in the money pit area

Appears to be in a location

Very close to the garden shaft.

Most of our gold
and silver values,

We're seeing in the shallow

Monitoring wells.

The 80 to 110 foot area

Is the area that
this is coming from.

That's right.

Can we reach that conclusion,

That wherever this is
coming from, it's shallow?

That's certainly what we're
seeing in the data right now.

That is astoundingly good news

For our search at this point.

I mean, it's a lot
easier to chase it

-Shallow, too, right? -Yes.

That's kind of interesting

Because these are
levels that match

- The 90 foot stone.
- Yeah.

In 1804,

When members of
the onslow company

Removed the
legendary 90 foot stone

From the ninth oak
platform in the money pit,

They probed the soil beneath it,

And struck a flat,

Wooden surface
some ten feet below.

The discovery made them certain

That they were about to recover

A vault packed
with untold riches.

But unfortunately,
their hopes were dashed

As the pit suddenly
filled with seawater

From the believed
man-made flood tunnel

Originating at
nearby smith's cove.

Is it possible that
the oak island team

Is narrowing in on
what those searchers

Could not reach more
than two centuries ago?

The findings of
the highest gold values

Between 80 and 110 feet,

It replicates the old
story of the money pit.

They were absolutely convinced

There was treasure
at that depth.

How do we find what they
thought they found long ago?

That's yet to come.

I mean, look, I'm all for
this. We should chase that.

Onward and into
that blob area we go.

So, just for reference,

We're 10, 15 feet just
west of the garden shaft.

I'm going to put my cursor
so everybody can see

What marty's
calling the "blob" area

Is essentially this area here.

It might go a
little farther west.

The blob is the likeliest spot
where the gold is coming from,

The origination of the gold.

I am extremely excited.

Everything that is
presented in the war room

Seems to indicate
that we're closing in

On where the treasure could be.

This is something
that absolutely

Has to be followed up.
