EPISODE FIVE

Hey, Lee Shin-won! What's wrong?

Are you stupid?

Are you? Why can't you see it?

Why don't you get what's coming to you?

What's coming to me?

The royal conjugal night is planned tonight.

Who do you think will go?

No way.

What's going on?

It's nothing, Your Majesty.

I asked what's going on.

It's cold. Please…

Tonight…

I can't let So-rang go.

What did you say?

I'm saying So-rang won't be in your bedroom.

That's not for you to decide.

Are you trying to defy me?

This…

I cannot obey.

Lee Shin-won!

Look at me.

You're not seeing me as a friend anymore.

Why aren't you answering me?

What do you think I'm saying?

Then

win against me.

Your Majesty, please don't be like this.

Hey, Lee Shin-won! What's wrong with you?

You can win against me

and take her.

Follow me.

Grab your sword.

How much more will you disobey my words?

Your Majesty, please put down your sword.

Captain Lee Shin-won is your friend.

Yes, there is a hidden intention at the end of my friend's sword.

Am I seeing it wrong?

Why? Are you just going to defend?

I told you to not go easy on me.

You're completely making a fool of me.

Why are you closing your eyes?

-You poked me? -Stop it, seriously!

Step back.

Guys fighting should at least be like this.

Your butterfly in the garden was So-rang.

Do you see me as a friend or a rival in love?

Answer me!

Are you trying to protect Shin-won?

I'm trying to protect Your Majesty.

Protect Your Majesty from Your Majesty.

Please go to your bedroom.

The royal conjugal night is scheduled for tonight.

The royal conjugal night?

Leave him.

Sword training in the night is pretty tough.

-Please kill me, Your Majesty. -Please kill me, Your Majesty.

Everybody leave.

I said leave.

Or are you hoping for the things they've planned to happen?

How can you point your sword at Captain Lee Shin-won?

Were you being considerate to your friend?

Are you getting on his side?

This isn't something you should get mad about like this.

Am I something to you?

I'm nothing.

Are you saying I acted like a jealous man?

You're yet to be…

Yet to be what?

Nothing.

I will take my leave.

I said all the palace ladies are the king's ladies.

Then

I must be one of those numerous ladies.

Do you know what kind of punishment is given to a man who fancies

a palace lady?

Then where is your heart

headed to?

That's why I said not yet.

Please kill me, Your Majesty.

Punish us who planned such a scheme rather than Captain Lee.

I can't have Shin-won stay at his job.

Forgive me for saying this but

if Captain Lee is dismissed So-rang won't be safe.

So-rang almost got in big trouble when she went home.

Killers chased her.

Someone's trying to kill So-rang?

Has it become known that she's attending me?

Nothing's for sure

but if it wasn't for Captain Lee Shin-won

So-rang would be dead by now.

I will change her bodyguard.

Will they risk their lives like Captain Lee Shin-won?

The Crown Princess's memorial day is coming up.

If something happens to So-rang

we will also…

Lee Shin-won…

Lee Shin-won…

I also think the same.

There shouldn't be any gaps in her protection right now.

As you know, in a few days

the same murder will repeat in this palace.

That should never happen again.

So we're watching everything.

This is the investigation report from the Crown Princess's murder.

I've already looked it over a thousand times.

I'm looking it over again in hopes of finding something

but all the evidence still points towards suicide.

How can that death be

a suicide?

Why did you do that?

You said the palace is dangerous.

You said one little mistake can get me killed.

Who are you worrying about?

You!

You almost died!

If you take a palace lady like that you'll be killed for treason.

Thanks for worrying about me.

Don't you know what it means to cut the tie off the king's attire?

Then what should I have done?

Do you really not know

why I went that far?

So?

Were you trying to kill His Majesty?

How do you feel?

I went that far, yet

you still don't feel anything?

We're friends.

You are in the wrong.

Friends?

Then let me ask you one thing.

Did you really never see me as a man? Not even once?

No, I've never seen you as a man.

So let's keep

being friends.

Don't cross

that line.

I'm sorry for having you come to such a humble place.

You'd like to see how prepared they are?

Look straight ahead.

Five.

One.

Two.

Three.

They are all beautiful, kind

daughters from good families.

All the queen-worthy ladies are gathered here.

I told you to trust me.

What is your name?

My name is Hyeon-seon from the Ye family.

So you're Hyeon-seon.

So pretty.

The queen-to-be is appointed internally

in advance by the Internal Court Administration anyway.

This is a good time to do laundry.

I agree.

Since we're here, should we take a bath?

Oh, you're so silly!

Why?

What is that?

Is that the queen?

We don't have a queen right now.

Oh what is that?

This is why

you need a man like me.

It's so dangerous to walk late at night.

If you're going to be silly, please leave.

Didn't you hear the rumors?

The ladies who went to the wash place last night all fainted.

Like they saw some ghost.

Why? What happened?

Whatever happened, why do you worry?

You have me.

I am a Royal Investigation Bureau…

Underling!

Oh? Do-seok.

An underling that just chases people's bums.

Like a little puppy.

Hands off.

-Here. -Did you bring more romantic novels?

I told you I can bring you anything you want.

EXTRAORDINARY YOU

Where do you find these?

Just let him know if you want R-rated…

Goodness.

Shut that mouth.

I'm trying all I can to change my first impression.

Smile.

It's not a good time to be focusing on imaginary stories.

Kidnappers are running wild these days.

A pretty lady like Hae-yeong should be even more careful.

What are you doing here

-not arresting kidnappers? -Not arresting?

What good is protecting ten or 100 women?

I must protect my woman.

My woman? Who's your woman?

I should be arresting you, you lewd thing.

Birds of feather flock together.

-Birds? -Underling…

Did you call for me?

Is that a wound from me?

No.

I met some killers outside the palace.

I heard they were targeting So-rang.

Do you have any idea who sent them?

Among them was someone who used a unique sword.

I ordered an investigation into it.

Alright.

I was going to punish you.

But I can't.

Shin-won.

Please continue to protect So-rang.

I will abide by your orders.

It's not an order.

It's a favor.

And don't…

have feelings for her.

Protect her

but don't become close to her.

Is that an order?

If it's not an order

will you disobey?

I want to ask you one thing.

Have you

forgotten everything about the crown princess?

Have you been well, Your Highness?

Crown Princess.

Why haven't you looked for me lately?

I didn't?

Your heart didn't long for me.

There's no way.

Why are you doing this, Crown Princess?

I will keep fading.

It's because you're forgetting me.

Don't go, Crown Princess.

There is something I must ask you today.

Who murdered you?

I want to catch the culprit and resolve your sorrow.

If I don't

people will keep getting hurt in the palace.

Please tell me.

My…

My death…

Don't go, Crown Princess.

Crown Princess!

Why are you here?

I came in for my shift and you were groaning.

Did you dream of the crown princess again?

You haven't been, lately.

The Crown Princess's shape is fading away.

Her spirit must really be erasing.

So-rang.

Can you be possessed now?

Pardon?

You want me to receive her spirit now?

Were you just playing around when you hugged me?

And was your kiss just my misunderstanding?

This possession is all an act.

You've been deceived by me all this time.

There are no ghosts in this world.

It's all hallucinations made up in your mind.

Can you still not think straight?

There is something I must ask.

I need to know the answer to be free from this agony.

Have you been well?

I can only leave this world if you don't look for me.

You cannot keep calling for me like this.

Just tell me what you were going to tell me earlier.

Weren't you trying to say something?

Tell me

about your death.

I cannot.

A dead person cannot harm a living one.

That's why.

There is no way your death was a suicide.

Your Highness, my death happened seven years ago.

What's important to me now is

that you overcome all this and stand up.

Why is that?

Your only fault was that you loved your husband.

It was

not love.

What?

Huh?

What did you say?

What do you mean, Crown Princess?

You loved me too much.

You longed for me too much.

So rather than love…

It was worry.

Didn't I tell Your Highness

that you had to quickly

get back to your senses?

Crown Princess.

So whether I loved you or not, it's all in the past.

That can't be!

How can our love become the past?

I'm saying it wasn't love. To be exact…

-…it was loyalty. -Loyalty?

Yes, loyalty.

And what if it wasn't the past?

How long will you hang onto a dead person?

What I want is…

that you please…

-Please. -That you please…

forget me.

Would he be alright?

I don't care.

Some insolent group is secretly collecting rocks from Bugak Mountain

and selling them.

You need to interrogate the official in charge, Your Majesty.

Your Majesty.

There is a report about the draught from Chungcheong Inspector.

Is his spirit still there?

Was I too harsh?

I should go wipe his sweat.

Your Majesty.

Is it real?

Pardon?

It wasn't love?

The crown princess didn't really love me?

Well… How can I know a person's heart?

A person's heart changes twelve times a day.

There is no way. Crown Princess for sure…

For sure…

For sure!

For sure…

Was there anything she said when she was alive?

Like expressing affection?

I cannot let myself relax because of my loyalty to you.

Your Highness,

you must separate love from state affairs.

Like the way she looked at you?

I don't know.

What were her true feelings?

Now how about we forget about the crown princess…

This won't do. I should ask myself.

Ask whom?

Head Eunuch.

Yes, Your Majesty.

Call Lord Ahn Ji-hyeong, former chancellor of the Royal Academy.

Yes, Your Majesty.

W-who's that?

Ex-father-in-law.

Why is this getting so big again?

Your Majesty.

Your Majesty.

I missed you.

Have you been well, Father-in-law?

Forgive me.

I get more tearful as I get older.

Don't worry about it. It is okay.

Oh…

My Ja-yeon…

Whenever I think about Her Highness

I feel as if my skin is ripping.

I actually asked for you to ask you something.

Please ask me.

Did the crown princess

love me when she was alive?

Of course.

She was very loyal to you.

She was so overwhelmingly happy to serve the sun so closely.

She promised me every time she saw me

to fulfill her job as your subject.

So I understand her loyalty.

But how about her feelings of love?

Feelings of love…

must be loving hearts between man and woman.

Yes, that!

As her husband, of course…

-Of course! -Of course.

Of course?

She probably loved you very deeply.

Probably?

As for her father, he would say that her loyalty and love was deep.

What else could he say?

And once she was in the palace, they probably rarely saw each other.

From what I see, I don't think you can find our the truth

officially like this.

When it comes to love stories

her handmaid would know better than her father.

-Her handmaid? -Should we secretly go out together?

-Secretly go out? -You said you wanted to know.

If Her Highness really loved you or not.

But how do we find her?

Her hometown is Gangneung.

I will take care of that.

I've been wandering round the country how long?

Finding someone is easy-peasy.

But do I really have to dress like this?

Your face is too elegant.

If you don't do this we'll get caught.

But still this is…

Do I have to dress like this?

You look good.

Why are you dressed so nicely?

I need to act like a lady from a powerful family

so the handmaids will answer to me properly.

I think you can come up.

You can go ahead.

Yes, Your Majesty.

Shin-won!

Your Majesty! Please hold me!

Are you saying you'll step on the king to get up?

The night is short. Hurry!

Oh well…

Ack.

Stay still.

Here we go.

I'm up.

I just got kicked.

Hey! Have you heard of death by dismemberment?

When the king's body was harmed even the queen got deposed in the past.

You can rip me up or depose me.

If you don't come, we'll just go by ourselves. Let's go.

Why did I follow her here?

Goodness.

In the past

when the crown princess was selected, how did she look?

Oh, there was a fiasco.

Because it was a happy occasion?

Because she didn't want to go to the palace.

Why would she be happy to be locked up

in the palace forever at an age when she wants to play around?

She was crying and screaming that she can't see her parents anymore.

We had to coax her and calm her down in order to be able to send her in.

Then have you seen her since she went in the palace?

Of course not. It wasn't easy for her to visit her home in Gangneung.

She used to send letters in anger

how the crown prince would not send her home not even once.

-She used to talk behind his back… -Oh no.

She wrote

every single one of our names in the letter.

But who knew that would happen to her?

You must have had a tough time.

Thank you for coming and telling your story.

Sure.

-Please get back safely. -Sure.

-Move away. -Your Majesty.

I'm sure she loved me once she came in the palace.

I thought you'd say that so I called one more person.

Here she comes.

Crown Princess, are you okay?

Your Highness, this is our job.

We will take care of her.

Go back. What are you doing?

Get back there.

Thank you for coming all this way.

Please sit over there.

Thank you for coming.

I wanted to ask you a couple of things.

How long did you work in the palace?

I was there all my life.

Has it been seven years since I left after what happened to Her Highness?

So back then

how was the relationship between His and Her Highness?

His Highness cherishing Her Highness too much

was the problem.

He cherished her and protected her too much.

You have to look up to get the stars but His Highness didn't look up.

Ah… So he looked down.

-That's right! -What a shame.

The high-ups were agitating for a grandson.

But the palms need to meet to make a sound.

So…

The sound was not made!

Ahem.

The king would have nothing to say even if he were abandoned.

That's probably the start of the rumor of him being impotent.

How did the man-loving rumor start?

Ah, there was this officer that he adored.

He put Her Highness to sleep early

and sweated with that man every night.

-Sweated? -Sweated?

-Practicing swordsmanship. -Until his royal attire was soaked.

Oh… But…

What do you think Her Highness

thought of His Highness?

I know that for sure.

Loyalty

deeper than love.

-Loyalty? -Loyalty again?

Then the married life with His Highness was…

All Bi Jun I Su.

Business?

Sense of obligation between your superior and you.

-Feeling obligated to serve His Highness. -It was Bi Jun I Su, Your Majesty.

What you're saying is that

she didn't really see him as a husband?

She respected him as her lord but didn't really love him as a husband?

Personal feelings weren't there.

You know that incident was

concluded to be a suicide in the palace.

Do you know anything about that?

It wasn't my shift that day so I didn't see anything.

I'm sorry for her

but it's already been so long.

If he were my son I would have told him to get married too.

Wait! Is that rumor true?

So what is he exactly? Impotent or man-lover?

-Im…! Get out. -Hold yourself.

He will end the marriage ban soon.

-He will definitely end it. -I see.

Goodness.

Thank you for coming out so far.

Please return safely.

You know, right? Please keep quiet.

-Of course. -Thank you.

Return safely.

Oh! You scared me!

What are you doing?

Me?

Weren't you over there?

I'm so dumbfounded. Was this all a scam?

-Huh? No. -Then why are you paying them?

Was this all…

a lie? Loyalty deeper than love?

Then will you just leave His Majesty like that?

Isn't this crossing the line?

You are the one

that crossed the line.

That time! Should you be doing that?

Why are you talking about that now?

I'm still telling all this to His Majesty.

That you hired people to do this.

Hey! We're friends.

We promised to cover each other's faults.

Let me go.

Will you be happy

if I am executed for treason because of this?

I heard that for death penalty

they rip you up like a squid to kill you.

Then will you be able to eat squid for the rest of your life?

Yummy. Won't you be unable to eat it forever?

Right. Relax and think of it slowly.

Orabeoni, please?

Let's not do this, Orabeoni.

Now you call me Orabeoni.

Fine.

I won't talk about this anymore. So promise me one more thing.

Promise what?

Don't love His Majesty.

Promise me you won't have any kind of feelings towards him.

Wouldn't it be better to draw

that tie softer?

Put them away.

That's scary!

What's wrong? What is it?

That's so creepy!

-What is it? -What's up?

Did someone get kidnapped again?

No! This is worse.

The late crown princess is back in the capital.

-That's a lie. -No way.

How can a dead person come back to life?

That must be a ghost!

-Must be a ghost. -Right.

That's still scary.

Was she alive all this time, by chance?

No way.

Then what was this marriage ban for seven years has been for?

Who knows? Maybe all this was for nothing.

It was too long for it to be nothing.

It must be just some silly rumor.

A thing to stun the country.

But there are many people who witnessed the crown princess.

Some at the wash place, some at the temple.

The dead crown princess wearing the royal wedding gown staring at you.

Come on. If she was real, she wouldn't be wearing a wedding gown.

Or maybe she's an evil spirit or a ghost.

Because of her resentment of her wrongful death

Joseon's been cursed with a marriage ban!

Hae-yeong, you're delivering useless words again.

Oh, you're up? I thought you wanted to take a nap.

If crown princess's ghost is real, then what is So-rang doing?

Well, she's s…

-S? -S… S…

Surely doing something lovely.

Since she's always with the king, I'm sure love just springs out.

You know love.

-Love… -Sir, can I have a moment with you?

With me?

Yes.

Sure.

Chun-seok, why are you always here?

How did you know to send that message that day?

We almost got in trouble when we got out of the palace.

I sent that message because So-rang had bad luck this month.

You don't know who sent the killers?

Even if you investigate now, there won't be enough evidence.

But the time will surely come.

The time when they target So-rang again.

We can only counterattack.

What if something worse happens?

Avoiding misfortune isn't always the answer.

You have to endure

and fight back to become greater.

The number of people targeting So-rang's life will increase

and they'll get more tenacious.

Goodbye.

Captain, take Chun-seok with you.

He's flirting with a woman under the marriage ban.

Me? Of course not.

Where are you headed to? I'll escort you.

I told you to investigate about that sword.

Aren't you here too often?

Just in case those guys appear here again.

Didn't it all happen on your way to Aedaldang?

But have you heard about this rumor?

What rumor?

The dead crown princess came back to life in the capital.

What?

I heard it all in there.

Bring another bottle of alcohol!

Your Majesty, please stop drinking.

Please stop drinking.

Head Eunuch, I drank it all. Go bring more.

The flow needs to go on.

Me?

Oh, Your Majesty, that's enough.

-There's still more in there. -No, there isn't.

Oh, here you are.

Your Majesty, please come back to your senses.

The Crown Princess.

The Crown Princess is here.

-There he goes again. -Crown Princess.

I will go see the Crown Princess.

-Crown Princess. -Goodness.

Where to? To the other world?

Oh goodness. Should we just make him drink more and make him sleep?

Please bring some hard liquor!

Bring some hard liquor!

-Take a glass. -Sure, sure.

I will personally send you to the other world.

Your Majesty, are you alright?

Yes.

I've made up my mind.

-What do you mean? -I should quit drinking.

Really?

Oh, yes, good idea. Your inside will get ruined if you don't.

So-rang, listen. I've tried to forget the Crown Princess but it didn't work.

-So… -Well.

You have to endure that process to forget someone.

Your Majesty, will you be hurting forever?

You need to hurt now and then get better.

So you should let go of her now.

And you should get back to your senses.

Oh goodness! Here.

I'm alright. I'm alright.

Why do I miss you so much tonight, daughter.

Will you visit me in my dream tonight?

The wind is telling me to go in and sleep.

My Lord!

My daughter.

You've come.

Did you come to see me?

Why is my daughter

still so pretty even after so long?

Daughter! Ja-yeon! Ja-yeon!

Ja-yeon…

My daughter…

Ja-yeon!

Come on, there's no ghost.

Right. And even if there is, there isn't this one.

I mean ghosts aren't crazy for attention.

Coming out here and there.

Why would it come out to people to twist their mind?

Right? Someone's trying to shake the country with this nonsense.

I don't feel any yin energy in Hanyang for ghosts to roam around.

These three places are where the ghost's been spotted.

Don't you think it's standing there to get noticed?

At places where women gather to talk.

-Ooh. -Ooh.

You do seem like a captain today.

I think there's some kind of trick.

The people have never even seen her face.

She died seven years ago.

She's walking around in royal wedding gown so people are assuming that's her.

It's probably like a stand-in.

So-rang, this time it's really

really undeniable.

What do you mean?

It's really true.

The royal wedding gown ghost's the dead Crown Princess.

That ghost appeared at her house.

The servants said that her dad saw her in person.

-What? -From her looks to her height and figure.

He said it's definitely his daughter.

But he wasn't sure

if he saw a ghost or a real living thing.

That's definitely a trick.

Aren't they trying to cause bigger controversy?

I think so too.

The unofficial exorcist of the palace is here. How dare she roam around?

That won't do. I will catch her for sure.

You find out her identity. I will be in charge of catching her.

By the way,

can the royal wedding gown be made anywhere?

No, only the royal seamster of the king can make

the royal wedding gown.

The royal seamster.

EMBROIDERY - CUSTOM-MADE

Is anyone here?

Is Seamster Kim Chan-man here?

Come on in.

You have to be careful.

He might already been bribed.

Excuse us.

Can you make an outfit with this?

Are you trying to get married in this age of the marriage ban?

Even if we can't right now, as soon as the marriage ban ends, we will.

Aren't you supposed to arrest people like that?

I still need to get married when the marriage ban ends.

Since I've waited seven years, I want to make it really fancy, darling.

D-darling?

Of course you should.

Is that the best one?

That's not available.

It's a precious fabric used for royal weddings.

Royal wedding.

But it seems like

it's been a while since you made a royal wedding gown.

Maybe about ten years.

A queen needs to be selected

so she can wear what I made for her wedding.

It's my last wish.

This will look so good as an outfit.

Then is there no royal wedding gown left in Joseon?

There's probably one.

Where?

The king has granted the royal wedding gown to the father of the Crown Princess,

Lord Ahn Ji-hyeong.

He tried to console the sorrow of the father who's lost his child.

Is that so?

It must have been about seven years since I've made a wedding gown.

Should I loosen up my hands?

I don't even have to measure you. I can't tell just by looking.

You said this fabric isn't available.

But I think it might look good on you.

But still we can't use royal fabric.

-Let's go. -Sure.

We will be back when the marriage ban is over.

Will you come together?

Most likely.

-Let's go to Bukchon. -Alright.

I am State Tribunal Captain Lee Shin-won.

I'm a palace maid serving the king.

We have somethings to ask about yesterday's incident.

Did you cry all night, by chance?

How silly of me to keep tearing up.

I'm sorry to keep saying uncomfortable things.

But was it really the crown princess you saw last nigh?

Would I not even recognize my own daughter?

You weren't mistaken by the dark?

I was pretty close for being mistaken.

Over there.

It was that well.

I wanted to get closer to see her

but she vanished into thin air.

I know it's a hard request

but can we see her belongings she left behind?

I've never opened this in seven years.

I was afraid to even touch it in case it wears out.

The movements in the palace are concerning.

They are determined to catch the culprit this time.

Do you know why

people get tricked by the same swindlers' tricks?

Because they believe they'll never be fooled.

But as they follow the swindler's fancy handwork,

they get hit in the back of their heads.

Then

why did I not kill her when she was out of the palace?

Because there is a separate place for her to die.

If she were even hung as a corpse in the crown princess' palace,

King Lee Heon would never

be able to get up again.

This sound.

Crown Princess!

Stay there. I will come to you.

Your Majesty!

Crown Princess.

Crown Princess.

Crown Princess!

You all saw her too, right?

Yes, I did.

-It was the Crown Princess, right? -Yes, it was Her Highness.

So what's going on?

Oh!

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty.

-Crown Princess! -Your Majesty!

-Crown Princess. -Your Majesty.

Stay still. I will come to you.

your Majesty, please look at me.

Please look at me.

THE FORBIDDEN MARRIAGE

We need to find her before she gets out of the palace.

Inspecting all the palace ladies…

She is going to her place to die.

We were ordered

to find a suspicious palace lady.

What's your real name?

Your name is not real? What does that mean?

This must be a warning for So-rang.

Are they going to target her?

Your Majesty!

So-rang is…

I wonder why I want to be

by your side even if I die.

We must find her tonight.
