Hi I'm Laura Alexandra and welcome to Serbia.

I'm exploring this beautiful European country and discovering its rich history,

unique culture and of course its modern-day offerings.

Last time I was in the city of Niš on a journey through its past and present.

I also had a chance to visit the natural wonder of Devil's Town a truly unbelievable sight.

Now my journey continues as I explore Western Serbia

and I'm back on the water for some relaxing sightseeing.

I’m now travelling down Ovčar-Kablar Gorge, towards a magnificent lake

and what better way to take in the panoramic views of western Serbia than by boat?

The gorge is 20 km long. At its widest point is 2 km and at its smallest it's just 100 meters.

Edraianthus Canescens, it's a very rare flower that's actually found just here at the gorge, in this protected

area you can see behind me. It's a Nature Conservation that's home to loads of very rare and protected species

like the Lynx, Wildcats, pigs, wolves and 183 species of birds live there as well.

The waters in Serbia are full of fish, especially carp and also catfish as well

and apparently, the largest one found in Serbia was well over 2 meters can you imagine?

If you look behind me you can see the mountains and it will be no surprise

that Alpine climbers actually train here

Within 6 km there's actually 10 monasteries, and the one you see behind me right now is St Nicholas.

The monastery you can see way up there in the mountains is Vaznesenje,

which means the ‘Ascension of Jesus Christ’.

With all the things to see, and the tranquil pace of the boat ride,

this is a wonderful experience with constantly changing scenes of beauty.

My boat ride comes to an end right next to a restaurant, where I conveniently have someone waiting for me.

I'm in western Serbia and I'm off to meet someone called Mya for lunch.

Yes they are representatives of Guča trumpet festival and

they participate in competition of the young brass bands here in Guča.

Wow and what about the dress here?

Yes they dress national costume

and each band has ten members. Two trumpets, four tenors and two drums.

And in terms of you know the band's themselves is this particularly traditional for Serbia?

Yes, yes they dress traditional costume and represent traditional music.

They participate in the Guča Trumpet festival every year and they are so good musicals, you listen that?

yeah

As you know Guča Trumpet Festival is the biggest trumpet festival in Europe, the most important festival.

Wow what happens at the actual festival itself?

The festival happens in every year in August

And what actually happens there? Is there anything exciting happens?

The festival is famous about trumpet music and has a long trumpet history

because they are bands from every part of Serbia from, from foreign countries also.

So what is the competition actually about? What can you win?

In competition participate about 16 to 20 brass bands and the dream of each trumpeter is to win,

at Guča trumpet Festival. And there are several awards such as the gold trumpeter, first trumpeter, the best

brass band and it's so important for them.

It's a real honour is it to actually win?

Yes, yes if, if they win in Guča they become the best trumpeters, the best brass band, it's so important for

them they will be famous.

And in terms of, you know music in Serbia as a whole, is it very important to people is everyday life?

Yes people here in Serbia love trumpet music

and because they love that rich rhythm and they love to dance also.

Well looks so exciting but I'd love to have a go at playing one of the trumpets is that okay?

The golden trumpet!

Having wowed everyone with my amazing performance I'm moving on. This time far away from the river,

and into the mountains, to explore a totally unique place to stay.

I'm here in Drvengrad, this is a village that's created entirely by a famous film director called Kusturica.

Behind me you can see Mokra Gora, which means ‘wet mountain’, and you can see why on a day like today.

But right now let's get exploring this amazing village and really get our creative juices flowing.

Hello my name is Nedikrov but you can call me Ned

That's nice and easy to remember I like that so this place looks absolutely amazing,

tell me a little bit about it

Okay we are now, this is Drvengrad, or wooden town in Serbian, and it belongs to the famous Director

Emir Kusturica and this is also tourist resort. With 150 beds, with some other facilities, which are very

interesting to the tourists. Such as a swimming pool, three restaurants, cinema, sports, tennis courts and

everything else. So people come here actually to feel that and seek Kusturica’s legacy

on this on this mountain in Mokra Gora.

It's absolutely huge by the sounds of it as well, and so much for tourists to do I mean, how much is it to actually stay here?

It starts from £20 per night for half board.

Wow and in terms of, I've heard that there's a rumour going around that there might be a film school or

some kind of school that you take part in?

During, ok, during the whole year there is some kind of festival, some kind of Education Centre,

and every January for the last 11 years there is a film festival, Kustendorf, and it's a lot of famous people

from all around the world come here. Such as, I don't know, Johnny Depp, Monica Bellucci, Novak Djokovic

was here, Deigo Maradona because Kusturica made a movie about him. So I said this is, this is a small village

in Serbian mountains, but when you're sitting in having coffee you can just see Johnny Depp,

you know, walking around.

Rubbing shoulders with the stars that sounds like just my kind of thing well listen,

shall we go and explore a bit more

It really is a fascinating place and the decor is just incredible.

I do like the idea of relaxing here with the stars as well.

What's this hanging off the edge of the mountain?

A helipad because he is, with the small heli moving around here to Belgrade or to Bosnia or to Montenegro

and he's always you know

Flying all over the place well I guess if you're a famous film director that's built a village like this

why not have a helipad?

Yes

It's absolutely brilliant here and are there any other places of interest nearby?

Yes we have a very, very special train

I'm in the Mokra Gora Mountains and about to take a trip on the historic railway known as the Sargan Eight.

It's obviously popular as they're already crowds of passengers waiting to board.

As the train arrives the passengers board and I can't wait to find out more.

Okay Laura this is a train on Sargan Eight railway.

It's very interesting because we will make a shape of number eight through the mountain

It sounds really exciting; let's get on board.

The railway station is wonderfully quaint.

With unique buildings scattered about that really adds to the experience.

Once on board the wooden carriage décor reinforces the period feel.

As soon as our tickets have been checked we're on our way.

Tell me about Sargan Eight?

Basic things about Sargan Eight is, it’s a 15.1 km long distance from Mokra Gora to Šargan Vitasi,

and between two stations is the Mountain Šargan. The railway eventually makes a shape of a number eight

and that's why we have the Sargan Eight name.

And why is it made in the shape of an eight?

Because that was the only way to contour the mountain because the area, oh we're coming into a tunnel.

So we've just come out of another tunnel, how many are there?

There are about 20 tunnels in this part the railway, actually one-third of the distance are

- Train Horn -

tunnels, from 20 meters to 1 mile. There's the reason why we cannot feel the number eight.

Yeah.

because there is 20 tunnels and it’s dark in the tunnels of course and you cannot feel. How can we

understand? We will have stopped on the, on the crossing of the three levels of the railway. And that's

the only way we can understand how we're going to make the number 8 through the Šargan Mountain.

And actually seeing the number eight as well?

Yes of course, yes of course and to understand

Tell me about it when this was actually made? How long it took to make?

This part of the railway was finally finished in 1925 after four years of the work. That was kingdom of

Serbs, Croats and Slovenians from the former Kingdom, between four and five thousand people used

to work here. So you can imagine how it was like in ants in the mountains, working eighty years ago,

without satelitte, without computer you know? With hands, and some TNT something like that.

It was really hard jobs and it was like science fiction for the people from this region.

I'm sure it was and what about the views what can we see from here?

It's the wooden town of Kusturica, depending on the level. Sometimes on the right, sometimes on the left

side. As I said we start from 500 and go up to 800 meters above sea level.

We're gonna get off and see how, look how actually number eight looks.

Okay what's the name of this station?

Err crossing, It’s a crossing.

Okay well let's go and have a look

As the other passengers disembark and continue their journeys, the locomotive moves to the other end of the

carriages for the return journey.

Once it's ready the Sargan Eight loads up a fresh group of passengers and is on its way once more.

We found a unique spot with a magnificent view of the train, majestically navigating the mountainous routes.

I've been above, below and through these mountains.

Whichever method you prefer though this area is gorgeous.

Now it's time to get in amongst them for a hike in search of something special.

Ned you've brought me to Tara National Park, what are we doing here?

Now we are going to the one beautiful viewpoint, one of the most impressive here,

but not just in the mountains, but also in Serbia.

Hang on a second that's a sign for bears, are there bears here?

Yes, you can see it's brown bear country of course that this is their territory and there is 50 of them in in this

region of national park. In whole of Serbia it's 70, so this is a really big number and okay, we will not see it

you know like in the zoo that they are running around, but there is possibility for bear watching and it's a

program, it's a new program with World Wide Fund and Tara National Park together from last year.

So there is 4 feeding points here in the mountains and we go from the April to the October, beginning of

November, when they are active, not sleeping, and so you can go and see from the from the house.

Actually couple of meters from you bear, you know, eating or playing with the kids and it's really adrenaline

and you feel very happy I don't know it's a strange feeling.

Yeah you're afraid and happy

All mixed into one and do the bears just remain here or do they like exploring elsewhere?

Errr The number of 50 bears, I said around 50, because they are moving from Serbia to Bosnia,

we’re close, very close here to the border. So they go without a passport, without IDs,

cross from Serbia to Bosnia

Love it, well listen there's so much of the national park to explore should we have a little look.

It's quite an easy trek up the mountain with vast trails that are simple to follow

and if you know your stuff there's plenty to see on the way.

There's a lot of vegetation for being up so high?

Yes because here in the mountains you can find over 1,000 plant species, for example this is a wild

strawberry, and some 70 percents of herbs of Serbia you can find here in the mountain.

All 250 different mushrooms, it's a very rich National Park.

So what types of Black Eagles do you get?

Wow, what an incredible view

Yeah it is. Actually what we are seeing now it's Drina River Gorge and it's really beautiful Canyon,

about 25 km long and you can see the rocks are over 1,000 meter over the water.

And it's really amazing when you come with the boat inside the canyon and also it's a lake, it's Perućac Lake.

It's 52 kilometres long from here, from Perućac to Višegrad in Bosnia and also it’s now border with

between Serbia and Bosnia.

And what's the history of the gorge?

The history, well in the 1966 actually they built a power station and that's the year it's artificial lake.

And it's very famous because of the rafting people used to use Drina River would make rafts and transport

trees and wood from the mountain, from here to Belgrade.

And that's why this region of Drina River is very famous in Serbia.

It's just absolutely surreal the view right now I just feel like I'm on top of the world.

Yes, we are in the airplane

Well I didn't see any bears this time but I have spotted something that looks fun.

We've made it down to the gorge and the river Drina and right now I'm going to try paddling of a different

kind. Anyway I've never tried this before but today I'm going paddle boarding.

With just a little bit of direction and some gentle assistance, I'm in the water and ready to paddle.

The river Drina is about 15 to 17 meters deep but in the summer, during the dry season, it can be as little as five

centimetres. Quite a difference.

The Drina leads to the river Sava about 160 km away and has really strong currents created by a large

amount of rocks on the riverbed. It kind of looks like a cooking pot with all the bubbles swirling around.

Our destination along the river is this stunning waterfall and wow what a sight.

Now I finally have control of my paddle board, I just have to take a moment to enjoy the serenity of my

surroundings. It's truly beautiful and seeing it from the river somehow makes it even better.

It’s actually easier than I thought it would be, but they're famous last words aren't they? Which means I'm

probably going to fall in soon but I can actually do it and sort of stand up

You know what? That was an absolute adrenaline rush but there's one more thing to do before I leave

Tara National Park and Drina River as well come with me.

This time I'm getting some help. My guide is taking me to one of his favourite places further along the river.

We're heading to a place called the ‘House on the Rock’. Sounds intriguing.

The power of the river pushes us along quite quickly and I even tried to help as we paddle, with the current,

and unmistakeably there it is.

A house on a rock.

It was originally built in 1968 by locals who loved being by the river and wanted a place to jump in,

relax and have barbecues.

The house has been destroyed seven times over the years due to floods,

but has been rebuilt by locals every time.

This one was constructed in 2010.

After all the adrenaline rush I've had today with those activities you know what? I think I deserve a drink.

It's been a jam-packed day and I'm certainly ready for something more calming.

It just so happens there's a Rakia factory just a short distance away.

So we are now in this distillery, it’s actually one of the oldest in Serbia, and the culture of preparing Rakia

here starts in the first half of the 19th century. So it was really a long time ago and today we are in

BB Klekovača Distillery, they produce annually around 150,000 bottles of different types of Rakia

and now they have ten different types of Rakia in the offer.

So what's so special about this particular?

This, the name BB Klekovača means juniper brandy, so its base of the plum, plum brandy, plum Rakia

Yeah

With small balls of juniper put in barrels for 20 days and it's very specific taste

and that's the reason why this is very important and very famous in Serbia.

Can you show me some juniper and what it actually looks like when it's raw?

Yes, yeah of course you can, you can see, you can see this is actually a juniper. A small balls of juniper

I'm sure that I've seen some of this actually

Yes you saw this on Tara mountain

Oh at Tara National Park?

so it's just local to this region?

Yes this is local, this is a local and that's why this Rakia is so special

So you put the fruit in here?

and yes but first you need to put in a special barrel for it depends from two to four weeks.

Is that what the barrels behind us are?

No, no this one and this one

and after that you put it here in a happy machines

Yeah?

And then you put fire inside.

I like that happy machines.

and you see the pipes?

yeah

So actually you could kind of doing distillery and they use pipes to come inside and finally you have this big

white barrel,

This one here?

Yes and it's a pipe you can you can drink Rakia.

oh wow

And Rakia is, Rakia is something specific it's a, it's a culture of Serbian people and Serbian people are very

proud of Rakia. In the world they said Nokia connecting people, in Serbia we say Rakia connecting people and

really it is true.

Do you know what? Listening to all this history of Rakia that just made me really thirsty and I still

haven't had a drink! So erm let's go.

Since I've been so good and waited patiently I've decided it's time for a well-earned drink.

I have been looking forward to this Rakia since all my river experiences, paddle boarding, kayaking,

it's been absolutely brilliant seeing Tara National Park and the surrounding areas as well, so

It's been a fun-filled time in the Tara National Park but now I’m on my way to the mountain resort Zlatibor.

The air here is so clear it's considered a natural spa,

with glorious rolling hills and an upbeat atmosphere I can't wait to see what it has in store for me.

Zlatibor has loads to do including stuff for the mums and dads and the kids as well. So today I've come to

the Avantura Park to have some fun.

I've never done one of these before but it doesn't look too difficult, I mean if children can do it so can I, right?

It's the specialty you can see the prosciutto, that's dried meat, it could be pork or it could be beef meat.

And here you can see the plants,

it's like the health plants so we got kind of dietary and yeah it's good for healing like a lot of problem diseases.

I like things like this almost like, fruit teas and green teas and things what we've got down here as well.

Neverna that was so much fun, obviously we're taking a little break from quad biking but tell me about,

about this place where we are?

We are on the,

as my opinion is the, one of the most beautiful spots here in Zlatibor. I hope that you enjoy our ride?

I loved it

So you can see if people come here during the summer, or spring time, they can have adrenaline like this.

They can have a lot of activities here in the nature, but we also saw the ski resort.

Wow!

even, you can’t imagine it now.

Actually, we are actually the winter ski resort. So people come here also for skiing,

we have a big ski resort only 9 km from the touristic Centre. We have the three ski slopes, the big ski lifts

and we have a lot of people who love Zlatibor. Actually the people come here just to be free and to enjoy in

the unlimited nature and adventure

And with Zlatibor as well it just seems like an all-round resort. I mean we're here summertime, beautiful

flowers all around us, beautiful wildlife, the horses are even here while we're quad biking.

And equally you can come skiing in the winter?

Yeah so Zlatibor is a destination for whole year and for every kind visitor. For kids, for young people, for adults,

for seniors, so for every kind of visitor we have interesting activities during the whole year.

Sounds amazing well listen, I want to get back on the quads and go around this place again because it

was just so much fun. Should we do it?

Zlatibor is clearly a great place to come for some wild adventure in summer or winter

but I've heard that something amazing lies beneath - a subterranean wonderland.

So it's time to go exploring.

So I’ve seen Zlatibor from above the ground and right now I’m at Stopića caves

and this is a subterranean experience and Milosh is here to tell us more. Hello.

Hello Laura, thank you very much that you came to here at Stopića cave. First of all I would like to say you are

welcome. The Stopića cave is one of the most significant caves here in this Zlatibor area.

The Zlatibor area it's also very known by the caves but Stopića cave is one of the most significant because

of the large entrance because this is the one of the largest entrances in the caves in the balcony.

Because there is a 35 meters wide and 18 meters high that is one of the largest entrances.

I'm very excited about this, Milosh? Am I dressed okay because it feels quite chilly down here?

Yes there would be a little bit chilly, but you're dressed very good because the drops falling down on our head.

And there is a hair saloon inside and I will explain you all things about that hair saloon in the cave.

Oh sounds very exciting shall we go and investigate?

Of course, let's go

The sheer size of this cave is astounding, even though Milosh did say it was going to be cold and wet down

here I'm honestly surprised by just how much colder it is.

Despite this we press on into the depths to see the wonders inside.

Ok Laura I will explain why this cave is a little bit different than other caves of this type.

Actually you know that cave jewellery are stalactites, which rising from the top to the bottom,

and stalagmites which are from the bottom rising to the top.

For 1 cubic centimetres of stalagmites or stalactites actually they need about to pass about hundred years

approximately, that's how scientists can count how some cave is old.

In this cave we have a lot of stalactites, which are on the top but here is no stalagmites because this is a

river cave, the river passing all the way to the cave and that's how the river is floating away and took away that

water which made which should be made our stalagmites on the on the bottom.

When there is a one funny story about stalagmites and stalactite, when they are just 2 centimetres close to

each other people are calling that desire, because they have desired to touch each other.

When they just touch each other, we call it a cave kiss, and after that kiss, that kiss became a one beautiful

column in the cave. Unfortunately in this cave we don't have a stalactite and we can have a kiss, and a column,

because river take that water away. Now I wanted to show you something more beautiful here in this cave

and let's go to see.

Ok great

The infrastructure inside makes it quite easy to get through the caves

and steps take you to all the best spots.

Well this is something for what is more significant for this cave, this limestone tubs. Actually the creek,

the river that we show a long time ago actually didn't pass where it is now. It passed to this channel

and the water, inside the water, is a lot of crystals of the calcium. And in some period of the year that water has

stopped and on the edges of some areas that limestone starting to collect and that's how these tubs

actually are made. And for thousands and thousands of years they rise, every year. Something similar when

you left the water in the glass, and you forget to spill in the night, tomorrow morning you will see

the white marks on the under glass. That is how this actually tubs are made of this water, is very rich with the

calcium but also with the iron and that's why these tubs are actually orange or yellow.

And what about the deepest one of these limestone rocks?

The longest one actually he is the 14 meters, and the deepest one is just here,

the third from here, is a 7.2 meters deep

Wow that is super deep and they're just passing the water from one to the other?

Yes from one to the other, yes, in some period of the year in the, in the spring where there is a lot of first

snow melting and a lot of rain, these tubs are full of water and the water are passing from one to another.

After that, with the level of water right now, these tubs becoming dry

and in some period they are absolutely dry.

It's an incredible sight to see and it must be even more exciting when they're full as well,

there's loads of water in these caves as well isn’t there?

Wow!

This is actually a waterfall and more water that I wanted to show you. This waterfall, or this river,

starts out of the cave and then entering the cave, passing with a 700-meter long channel and here in this

area is made one beautiful waterfall. In this period this level of water is a little bit lower than normal but the in

a spring or autumn, when there's a lot of snow melting and rain, this waterfall is much more stronger.

But also this waterfall, and this water in the top, made one beautiful natural phenomenon. It is cave pot

because in some period of water passing very far, and in depth, or circling back

Like a whirlpool?

Yes and that's how water dig that deep, water which are three to four meters deep, that is some natural

phenomenon here and it's very fitting example to this waterfall.

And I think it's brilliant that when you come here to see the gauge, you can actually

walk over and defy gravity of the actual end of the waterfall as well.

Yeah this area was prepared very much for the tourists, and to enjoy in waters of this day and this area here

It is fabulous Milosh, you've been the perfect caveman thank you very much.

Back on the surface and in the hot sun I'm at a unique heritage village

where people live almost like they used to.

Sirogojno is an Ethno village which expresses the culture, historically of the way of life in Serbia.

In effect it's actually an open-air museum. Milosh can you tell us a bit more?

Yes the village here is a situated in the middle of the 1800s to present the way of life of how people lived in

Serbia a long time ago. All the way to the middle of the last century, maybe in some rural places in Serbia,

people still live in this way of life in similar houses. Now in this certain village we will see what objects and

how people actually lived in that area. There is a main house, in Serbian language Magaza, which is a made

from two parts and then barn, corn crib, bee house and many other things what you see.

If you are interested we can go inside house to see the real way of life and how people lived in the house?

I'd love to see that, can we?

We're now in Serbian traditional house and this lady, Garina, will show us how to prepare our very traditional

Serbian cheese pie here in Zlatibor, and she will show you the first steps

and you will help her to finish that pie.
