When we first
started the band,

I think our, we had one
main goal which was like,

can we make a living off this
and can we keep doing it.

And then that happened.

We're in Columbia, Tennessee.
We're making a record we think.

So, normally this would
take us three years to do.

And then we're gonna try
to do it in three weeks.

-What's happening?
-Not much.

Let's do this thing.

Hey.

Okay, so, dining room.

We'll have an extra
leaf that we'll put in

to make it a little bit bigger.

JOSH: It is a little bit scary
to come into a house

and know that when we
leave in three weeks,

we'll have to have
something to show people.

Usually, our band takes
a long time to make records.

DUSTIN: You wanna
check that piano out?

Yeah!

That sounds great.

SETH: We just released
Out of Body.

There's no pressure
to release more music,

but we just feel it,
and we want to.

We wish we could be
touring right now,

but since we can't,
we want to make music.

We're in a really cool spot.
This house has a lot to offer.

TYLER: I didn't know
what to expect.

I thought it was going
to be like, more haunted.

Spooky, in a weird way,
and it's just been so great.

KONRAD: I mean, you're in
a home, so therefore,

you feel like
you're more at home.

You're not worried about
a million other things

that might be happening
in your world,

because this is your world.
This is all there is.

I think there are some real
benefits to doing it in sort

of an old-school way.

And like bringing
a lot of analog gear

and kind of like,
turning a knob yourself.

Moving a recording studio
into a house is a nightmare.

Let's just be honest.

KONRAD: Yeah, I mean,
we're building

a studio from the ground up.

There's not a studio here before
we step through the doors.

I think somebody's singing
in the shower right now.

MAN: It does sound like that.

I mean, guys, seriously?

C'mon.

We had written all
of these songs sort of

during the pandemic time.

There's a little bit
equal parts panic

and equal parts excitement,

which I think is really cool
about coming into any record.

I guess especially when knowing
there's not a bailout on it.

We're gonna be here
for three weeks.

We're gonna cut 10
songs, hopefully,

and whatever those
songs are at the end,

we're gonna be left with that.

Just sitting in the room
and hearing you sing it,

I'm hearing more of
the room than I am you,

and I feel like that that's,

if there's any sort of
cabin-y feeling song,

this could be it where
it feels sort of,

like when someone
puts on headphones,

it's gonna feel like you're
right there with them.

Yeah.

And I think that
could be really cool.

Konrad Snyder is
engineering this record,

and he is so unbelievably
good at what he does.

He is taking everything
that we're giving him,

and he's sort of arranging it,
orchestrating it sonically.

Felt like I was with

Yeah.

JOSH: For us, being a band
for as long as we have,

if there's anything
that we can be like,

"This is the first time
we've ever done this,"

we're gonna go for it.

So, for us, I think
it's the challenge

that makes it the most exciting.

What, like our
record standard,

that what we would put
on a record music-wise,

or at least tonally or whatever,

we might wanna lower
that standard some,

and it's more about
the emotion of it.

It's like, feels good,
feels good, move on.

And there's a freshness
to me, at least so far,

that it feels like that.

Holding the emotion
as the sacred part

of the process
and not the perfection

of whatever we're doing.

'Cause I think people
will connect to it more,

and I think it will just
be a different experience

in a good way.

Filming is scary,
because we've always said,

you know, if you ever do
a documentary on a band

and they lose a member,
so we can't afford

to lose any more members
this time around.

I'm not sure why we
brought a film crew.

Does anybody know
why we brought...

People are gonna get
a chance to see the band

in our real element,
which is, you know,

we love to make music
and hang out together.

We went intoOut of Body

with one goal which was,
let's try to enjoy it.

We've never made a record where
we've actually enjoyed it.

And we crushed that part,
so I do not want

to forget lessons we've
learned from it, you know?

The creative freedom
that you encounter

when you're enjoying
something is just incredible.

Nobody should feel
like they don't,

like if you're like,
"I don't get that lyric,"

or, "I don't want,"
just speak up,

and let's do it,
and let's just dive in,

because this is probably,
I would say for me,

the most insecure
I've been going

into a project with music

because it's the least feedback
that I've had on songs before.

One with Bo not being around.

So, we have a quick
time to do it, so don't,

if you think something sucks,
don't waste time telling me,

'cause we'd rather
do it now then whenever.

Creativity, at its core,
is taking chances.

It's not about doing things
that you know will work.

To think that we're gonna
make a record this janky

and put it out is also
super inspiring to me.

Over the years, I've
always thought that like,

my friends that I'd play
the demos of the songs to,

they're always like, "Oh,
I liked that demo better."

And it's probably because,
yeah, it wasn't overthought,

or it was the way that they
heard it the first time

that they fell in love with it.

Whatever the reason, I do
think there's something magic

in that, and it's
hard to allow yourself

to let that out into the world.

Well, do you ever
feel a song as deeply

as when you first write it?

-No.
-No.

KONRAD: Any time you can
inject hope or joy

or gratitude into the world,
you're making the world better,

and I think in 2020,
that is especially important.

Be wrong sometimes

I think that anybody
who has met Bear

would agree that
that man is a force.

The house I grew up in

Somewhere that I can

I can't help but to
think of Joseph Campbell

and "The Hero's Journey."

We're all the hero in our
own story, but we forget it.

It's been such an
experience seeing

these guys remember who
they are and the power

that they hold.

There's just a brotherhood
and a camaraderie that comes,

and everything
flows out of that.

It becomes magical.

-Sick.
-Boom.

Konrad is a total space
cadet in an awesome way.

He worked on my
side project, too,

Wilder Woods,
and that's where I met him.

I remember saying from
the back of the room,

"This might be a bad idea,"
and he turned around

and was like, "No, Bear,
it's not a bad idea,

it's an amazing idea."

KONRAD: It takes
a person experiencing

a lifetime of emotions.

It's just when
that person is ready,

the song can manifest
into the world.

He's been playing
more of like a straight,

-Yeah.
-Yeah, it feels like

it wants to like,

push toward that
double-time kind of thing.

Yeah.

Woo!

That's cool.

Without each other knowing,
each of us

called our wives this week,
and we were like,

"We are having so much fun!

Like, this is amazing.

The songs are going great,"
you know, so excited.

My wife described me
as being "giddy."

Like I just haven't felt this
excited to be making music

and be making a record
in a really long time,

and it's sad to say that,
and it's sad that

that was the reality
for most of us.

It used to feel like anything
we did was life and death.

It was our total identity
and, you know,

if it didn't come out right
or didn't work out right,

then maybe the band
would be over,

or we'd be over, you know?

And I don't think any of
us feel like that now.

In the ground

On in her heart

To look him down

Right at night

Her fade over me

Bear sends me
a lot of great songs,

and then the ones that are like,

really great, just kind of,
stop me in my tracks.

Even if I'm having a busy
day I'm just like, whoa.

JOSH: Yeah, I've always loved
songs that are autobiographical,

and this song is
Bear's perspective

of his relationship
with his grandmother.

She came to Jesus
in a flood in 1953.

Very descriptive.

A parent telling a child
like, you know, "Jump to me.

"I will catch you."

And there's certainly
low points in life

where all you really
want is to get back

that ability to trust
like it's the first time.

To trust someone like you've
never been wrong before.

KONRAD: Bass is the foundation
of the song.

It allows everyone else
the foundation to build off of.

JOSH: Seth is a vibe guy.

I've always known
him to be the guy

to change the environment in
the room, lighting incense

or just turning the lights
down and being like,

"Hey, man.
It's all good!"

And he has amazing legs.

If you ever get the chance
to see his legs,

In terms of a piano player,

I was watching Josh
play the other night,

and he is unbelievable.

The speed, the soul,
the syncopation.

He's a crazy talented
piano player.

Don't let the rain come

What if we went one phrase
earlier, so halfway through.

Let's try it one more time.

The other day my son woke me
up and jumped in bed with me,

and he was just laying there,
and he said to me,

"Dad, I think it's really cool
that my dad's in a rock band."

And I was just like,
"Thanks, buddy."

And he said, "Not everybody's
dad is in a rock band."

I said, "That's
definitely right.

"You're definitely
onto something."

The thing that
I think both Josh

and Seth bring that complement
Bear so well is their belief,

one in themselves, but
also their belief in him,

and their belief in the band.

It'd also be cool if it
went to like, just electric,

like the moment it's just like,

and then it builds
to go like way down.

We need some dynamics.

Yeah, it just kind of
feels like it's rolling

on its own on the whole
time, but if it did go

Yeah.

Some like, awesome,
like, edgy, you know.

'Cause then that going
down to nothing builds huge

into the chorus, and then...

Yeah, let the chorus be big.

That is hot, boy.

I think growing up,
for me, music came

from playing in the church.

It's kind of impossible
for me to separate the two

at this point.

Hello!

I'm gonna sing you
a song that might be good.

JOSH: When I was younger,

the church I grew up in
was a little bit stiff.

First, a piano,
organ, and a choir.

And I'll never forget when
somebody in the choir,

we were singing a hymn,
and somebody went...

And you could, I mean,
I still get cold chills

thinking about it.

Both.

Is there a difference?

I don't think
there's a difference.

I mean, I think we connect

to our spirit
through our emotions.

It's the gateway.

Did I sing on the verse
too long, off the,

"that I'm always trying to prove

that I don't deserve
your time, 'cause I am,"

I sang an extra
line right there.

TYLER: If you didn't,
it's really long.

Yeah.

There's an extra lyric here.

Can I borrow your
pen real quick?

All these venues,
you load in, it's like,

through where the kitchen
is and all that stuff,

and I'll be walking
through there,

and I'll hear somebody be
like, "Who's playing tonight?"

You know, and it's
like, "I don't know.

"Some Christian band."

I don't think I would
be here or play music

for a living if it was
not for the little church

that I grew up in that
my parents took me to,

because that was where
I learned to play music.

Bear's mom gave me
piano lessons,

and the drummer of the church
would give me drum lessons

in exchange for buying him
coffee from the gas station.

We were in this
small country town,

yet it was like a little
rock n' roll worship service

on Sunday mornings that
we got to be part of.

I refrain from saying,
"Jesus was like a rock star."

I don't mean that.

I mean more like the way
he lived was not safe

or absolute, you know,
so I think that's kind of cool.

And that's something that we've
never really struggled with.

We've always thought
music was rebellious.

And so even when it's like
the most positive of messages,

it's always like you're playing
it in a way that's freeing.

You're kind of
outside of your body,

for lack of a better
way to say it.

You are, you are mine

What do they say, "You
can't take the country out of,

the city, no," we're rednecks.

That's it.

They had this stuff
that they would rub on you

to keep mosquitoes away,
but once it's on you,

it turns your skin Smurf blue.

Okay?

Two hours later: Papa Smurf.

All the way up to here.

I had to cross back
over the border,

hand over my passport with
a hand that was solid blue.

I mean it was like, dark blue,

and I was sick from
my malaria pills,

and I was just like, "Ugh,"

Tyler's maybe
the best guitar player

I've ever been in a room with.

He's been playing a ton of
12-string on this record.

The sounds are just something
that you can only deliver

from a lifetime of
dedication to your craft.

What's
happening here?

I thought
you were doing a solo.

BEAR: All right, all right.

Who is Randall?

Hmm.

I've been waiting
to talk about Randall.

Randall's a character that
I'm not even sure is real.

I think he's a thing
of myth and legend.

I'm not really sure
where they found him.

I think Craigslist or
something like that.

Kind of crazy, we met him
where he was working

at this campground,
and I remember being like,

"Well, we like that guy.
He's got kind of a good vibe."

And at the time,
it wasn't about like,

what skills you had, you know?

I gave him a card, and I said,

"Hey, if you ever need
anything, just call me."

And they did, just two
weeks later, they texted me,

they said,
"Can you tune a guitar?"

And of course I couldn't.

I don't think
he could tune a guitar,

and we found out
he couldn't really.

Day before a show,
and Randall's tuning

all the guitars backwards.

And the piano player sees
him and he says to him,

"Hey, do you know
what you're doing?"

And he's like,
"Yeah, yeah sure."

And he's like, "You're
stringing those backwards."

And he was like,
"Oh, yeah, I mean,

"sometimes I do this just
to stretch the strings out,

"but I'll fix it,
don't worry about it."

Like the E string
and the E string are backwards.

I'm talking about the most
rookie mistake you could make.

Not only as
a professional guitarist.

-Were your guitars like-
-No, no, I was caught.

Like, somebody caught me

before I could hand
them out for the show.

BEAR: I think that was
my experience with Randall.

It was just that he was like,
in over his head, you know?

This is my bunk area
right here.

This is going out
to the living room.

But I loved his attitude
about it.

He would always say "yes"

even if he didn't
know how to do it.

Night moves

That was probably one
red flag for the band,

but they kept me around,
and a few shows later,

I'm kind of getting
the hang of it.

I think we were in Phoenix,
Arizona or something,

and the band is probably playing

only like 250 people,
and I ask him for a guitar pick.

And he comes out,

and he didn't know what
to do, so he comes out,

and we used to have,
all of the picks

would be in this
big barrel thing.

Randall brings the whole
box and just knows Bear

needs this now, and in
that hurry and that hustle,

he was running up the steps.

As soon as I start running
up the steps...

I feel myself floating.

His foot clips the top step.

Picks just fan out
all over the stage,

and it's slow motion, but
I hit the ground so hard,

the front row was
all like, "Ooh,"

His whole body goes
outstretched on the stage

and he falls on his face.

The picks, hundreds of them
go flying in the air.

And his face is sideways,
and he's like looking

at the crowd, and people
were like, "Hahaha"

in slow motion.

Randall is a completely
unique take on what it is

to be a person, and I
mean that in the best way.

I need some glasses
so I can do that thing.

Usually, when you say
"Randall," he goes-

At the time, he had these
huge, Coke bottle glasses,

so his eyes were huge, so
we were just questioning,

in a dark room, could he
actually see us, you know?

-We're like, can he see us?
-It's hard to say.

'Cause it's like
a vision challenge.

He definitely wants
to, but every time

I'm looking over there,
he's like...

If you're like, jamming out,
sweatin', hair in your eyes,

and you're like
having a good time.

-Get more of this.
-I need this.

I'm just over
there just jamming.

He's loving it.

We found out that
Randall played drums,

it was such a shock to me.

I mean, I'd known him
for like, a couple years,

and so, did not know
the guy played at all,

but especially as
good as he plays.

Joe Stillwell
had left the band,

so we didn't have a drummer,
and we were doing auditions.

Randall starts playing on
this demo that we were doing.

Me, and Bear, and Josh
were in the room

looking at each other
and we were like,

"My gosh, this guy's good."

Randall was our guy.

This is the third album
I've gotten to be a part

of with these guys.

Getting to watch the growth,
it's just amazing

to hear the stuff
that's being recorded.

Really inspiring.

There's that high that
like week one always has.

Week two is like put your
boots on, let's get to work.

Well, Bear has written
a song this morning,

a new one that we've
never heard before.

So, we're going to figure
out if we can actually learn

how to play it
enough to record it

and maybe put it on a record.

I don't know.

Fun things are happening
here at the Magnolia House.

So, here we go!

BEAR:
My demos start the process,

and then it can
really go anywhere.

Chances is a song I wrote
one of the mornings here.

It happens like a gift.

My dad was a preacher,
and I used to clean the church

as a job, and they used
to have a guitar on stage

and the chords,
and one day instead

of doing what I was
supposed to be doing,

I went up there
and tried to figure that out.

Pretty immediately after
I had three chords,

I was like,
"I wanna write songs."

The song has to be
good in its basic form

just played with one instrument.

That's kind of a benchmark
we've set for ourselves.

Is the song great just with
a voice and one instrument?

Misunderstanding

It started by like, I would
Zoom Josh pretty much

every day while
I was writing the song,

and I'd be like, "What
do you think about this?"

JOSH: He'd send me a text
that'd say "Facetime?"

And I'd jump on,
and he'd be like,

"Does this sound
like NEEDTOBREATHE?"

If somebody has an idea,
somebody else will build on it,

and then it kind of
just does this thing

to the point where
you're done with it,

you're like, man,
that's a beautiful part.

Who's idea was that?

And you kind of look at
each other and are like,

that was all our ideas.

Misunderstanding

BEAR: I don't want to have
the final idea.

I just want to have
the first one

that's probably really broad
and probably not that good,

but at least it's like, the
general direction we're going.

Now, let's all figure out
the path that it's gonna go.

We'll never know

One of my favorite records
that came out last year

was the Highwomen record.

The beginning

To find out that Bear
was friends with Natalie,

I was like, "Oh,
that's awesome man!

"We should have her sing
on something sometime."

You have a way with words,
and when you combine

that with your voice,
it just jumps

out at people
and sounds emotional.

It sounds like something
someone hadn't tapped

into in a while.

When you played me those
first couple of songs,

I remember thinking,

I just haven't really
thought this deep in a while.

You like those deep waters,
and that's hard to write from.

And it's hard to sell from.

It doesn't do very well.

It can be very hard
to sell from.

It just depends on what's
going on in the world.

No, I think it's interesting.

I think I'm just naturally
a really shy person,

so the things that
I want to say to people,

it's easier sometimes in songs

than it is
in conversation probably.

The song that you had
me sing on is probably

one of the best songs
I've heard in a while.

It's a very timely song,
and it's a very,

I don't know, I relate
to it in so many ways

as far as, people who
love each other, you know?

To me, that's what
struck me was that, hey,

we've been through
some rough times,

but don't throw all
of this away for this.

Don't throw all the good
we've had together.

There's a line about burning
all your bridges, like,

is it worth one victory
to burn all your bridges?

The older I get, the less
that's something I want to do.

And hand me down pain

And I just gotta say

I know that was making
it, but it's close.

That was good.

We're not on stage

She's kind of over
the whole rockstar thing.

I think she is

she's in a big band now,
but she just still feels

like sort of a facilitator,
which I think is amazing.

If you wanna talk about like
this sort of redemption story,

I think some people think
about it as this journey

that's like you're
climbing a mountain,

but it's really not.

It actually happens
at the bottom.

In my house tonight

Gone to sleep

That in the light

It's a hard thing
to be in a band.

It's even harder if your
brother's in the band.

And my heart is clear

Bear and Bo traveled
the world together,

took pictures together,
experienced life together,

and what a gift they have
to be able to do that

for as long as they did.

I just think that's
really awesome.

But it was very challenging.

I think that
people know that me

and Bo have a sort of very
passionate relationship

to say the least.

And we fought
a lot over the years,

and we've talked about
that, me and him,

and, you know, we've gone
to counseling together

and all these crazy things.

There's been plenty of work
that's been done there.

I think both of us had a hard
time being happy together.

I think Bo decided that his
time in the band was over,

and I guess
he lost faith that

we could work out
those differences.

BEAR: We're still figuring
out what it's like

to play music without him and
go to the studio without him.

I do think one of the positives

has been there's less
tension in the room,

and I think that's
huge for Josh and Seth.

Bo and I, we would just run
the conversation so much,

nobody could speak up.

So, a big part of that
rehabilitation for me

was saying to Seth
and Josh, "Hey, man.

"If I'm not being cool,
I need you to stay in the room

"and tell me.

"Maybe I'll be pissed in
the moment, but later on,

"I'll realize that you
were right, you know?"

I got my test, I'm negative!

Great to see you.

I can't tell you
how excited I was

to see Joe Stillwell
when he showed up

at the house the other day.

I've been going 90 miles
an hour with my life

and my family,

and he's been doing
the same thing with his,

so like, we just
haven't seen each other

in like, eight years.

So, I'm in the little homestead.

-Oh, in the little cabin?
-Yeah.

I saw it on the website.
They call it "The "Abe."

-"The Abe."
-

-Yeah, I feel like Abe Lincoln.
-

That's the time period.

What a reunion
and awesome thing to be back

in the room on my stool
next to his playing bass

with him playing drums.

Also hearing again
just the sheer power

that he delivers as a drummer.

Nobody hits the drums as
hard as Joe hits the drums.

He was around for a decade,
and then when Randall came in,

he had to play
the drums that hard,

or it wasn't NEEDTOBREATHE.

You know, when Joe left,
I was just like, I cried

and just lost it
over this thing.

And then when a year or two
goes by, we got back up,

and I was like, "Oh, man,
it's so good to see you."

So, the hotel owner thought
that we were Taylor Swift.

We were like, "Oh, no, no.

"We're just opening
for Taylor Swift,"

but they still had
the red carpet,

we had that
penthouse suite room.

Oh, yeah!

Don't you remember
sitting in there?

There were like four chairs
facing each other trying

to figure out the setlist

-for the album order.
-Yes!

BEAR: It was like a six
hour meeting, I remember.

Yeah, it was crazy.

And then we got to what
we thought was an agreement,

and then some of us
went to a baseball game,

but then some of us didn't,

and then there was
a conversation change,

and then we came back
and it was like, "No, no, no.

"We gotta re-vote."

Yeah, there was
a lot of back and forth.

-And I think it was about-
-One song.

It was one song,

-I think it was-
-White Fencesgoes second-

It was White Fences,yeah!

It was like, second or third.

And I was like, "I don't care!"

Every decision was just like,
agonized over and argued over.

I feel like the culture

of the band at that
time was a little toxic.

I didn't want to be
around it anymore.

So, I had to leave.

BEAR: We might have done
great things in the band,

but I didn't enjoy
it like I should've.

'Cause I wasn't really present.

I was just like, well, we've
got to do this to get to this.

I regret that.

You look back at some
of the things and go,

wow, that was amazing,
I can't believe I did that.

And I just wish
I would've enjoyed it more.

And so, I think we're
kind of moving into that

as a band it seems like,
we really have to enjoy it,

or we're not gonna do it.

The process that we
have now, conflict-free,

is giving us so much more life
and so much more enjoyment,

and this is what
I always wanted.

A lot of my favorite
times were actually

just the hanging out.

Actually playing
the show was some

of the most stressful
moments that I had.

I've been a part of
records after I'd left.

I wanted the friendship
to continue.

I didn't want it to feel
like this parting of ways.

Like "I was mad at you,
you were mad at me, we left,"

kind of thing, it
wasn't like that at all,

and I still love the band.

the name of a band that,

you know, made in college

and probably would've
changed it 10 times

if it hadn't have grown
into what it has grown into.

-What's happening?

-Yep.

BEAR: We have looked up

to these artists for
a very long time.

Switchfoot was a band

that we all listened to
when we were growing up.

So we have a lot of respect
for them and for Jon.

Yeah, man, c'mon in.

This place looks amazing.

It's pretty cool.

We've destroyed it,
but it's pretty nice.

He's such a soulful person,

and I think we've got a lot in
common when it comes to that.

It was really
interesting to meet him

and kind of get to know him.

We have totally
different personalities.

I can be very serious, and he's
just like, "Whatever, dude!"

Very west coast in
that way, which I love.

I mean, just get creative,
I mean, if it's just for us.

And then for the next
one, if we're on a boat.

-Nice.
-Because it's just like,

why not?

-Is it a Hornblower?
-It is, dude!

Really?

We played the Hornblower!

That was good times.

They gave us
a really good deal.

Carry Meis a song that
I wrote during the pandemic.

It didn't have
the whole thing written.

It was like
a verse and a chorus.

Sometimes the best
music is the stuff

that comes really quick.

And this was one of
those songs that he just,

he sent me a demo,
and then within an hour or two,

I sent him a second verse
and bridge, and there it was.

I mean, even 330 minutes later
he was like,

"Here's the second verse.
What do you think about that?

"Here's the bridge.
What do you think about that?"

It was as easy of a write,

and we weren't even
in the same room.

We were just sending
texts back and forth.

Yeah, 'cause in the demo
you guys both sing, right?

Is that the timing of it?

-Yeah.
-The way you did it was...

It's the music
then the vocals.

JOSH: It's super fun for us
to get to do this.

You know,
the studio environment,

and just to be able
to see people.

I think, right now,
in this season of life,

it's like really good for
the soul to see a familiar face.

They're gonna be like,
they just set a goal

not to overcomplicate this,
and now watch it happen,

they did it!

Yeah!

That's it.

Last night we had fun.
Everyone had fun.

I've had a lot of horrible
experiences on stage.

When we first started out,
I hated playing live music,

because I was just awful at it.

I'd much rather play
guitar in my bedroom

and get it right
and then press play.

So, the first time my wife
ever saw us play live,

we were playing, it was
either the Viper Room

or the Whiskey or
somewhere up in LA.

The first song I broke a string
and my strap fell off,

and like, I fell over backwards.

Like, tripped over the monitor.

So that's like,
three out of five.

Yeah.

And then we had a guy
playing keys with us,

and there was this one thing

that was gonna
trigger something,

and the keyboard just
started triggering things

out of nowhere.

So it was one of those
ones where it was like,

worst case scenario.

KONRAD: Did this
happen all at once?

All at the same time,
the first song.

RANDALL:
His songwriting inspired me

and almost
everybody else I know.

It was kind of one of those once

in a lifetime opportunities,
you know,

him getting to hang out.

He's exactly the kind of
guy you want him to be.

Just down to earth
and just super genuine.

When Randall joined the band,

he got married
pretty quickly after.

-Very quickly.
-Very quickly after.

And I don't think when he
was planning the wedding

he knew that we were coming.

RANDALL:
It was never an option.

And so, we go to the wedding,
and the band table

at this wedding is like,

we're sitting around
at a table like this,

and there's a dance
floor down this way

for the reception part.

And a Switchfoot song
comes on, which was-

-Souvenirs.
-Yeah.

So, the song comes on.

Randall's on one side,
and his wife, Samantha's,

on the other side.

RANDALL: We had
a choreographed dance.

Oh, no joke,
a choreographed dance.

-No way!
-Yeah!

And it was one of those
where it started slow,

so we had no chance to say,
"Is this really happening?"

And they're just
walking slowly together,

and then they face, and then
they come towards us.

RANDALL: We were like,
it was like deer in headlights.

I could see his face
just like, "Oh, man."

2020 has been a great distiller
of why you do what you do.

There is no fiscal reason
to make music right now.

The only reason why you'd make
music is because you love it.

The size of the universe

That no one could earn

Farther still

In the ocean's deep

I'm in too deep

I remembered it right after.

KONRAD: In this record,
there are a lot

of lyrics pertaining
to self-judgment.

I struggle with anxiety
and depression and always have.

And we're sort of
an inspirational band,

so it's hard to talk
about sometimes.

From growing up in the South

and sort of experiencing
this strong,

cold man who will
not share feelings,

will not share emotion,
I've even heard people

in my family say,
"I don't have emotions."

And I'm like, really?

There were many years
where I'd miss my kids,

and I'd cry myself to sleep
every night, and nobody knew it.

I have almost quit
this band like six times.

When you join a band,
you're like joining a circus.

The road's just
a crazy environment.

There's so many different
dynamics of fame

that are just
entirely unhealthy,

that the human heart was
just not conditioned for.

Extreme praise,
extreme criticism.

KONRAD: The people that I see
are incredible human beings.

But even just a drop of that
self-judgment, it makes me want

to shake them and say, "Wake up.

"Wake up to the gift that
you are living in right now.

"You're an incredible person."

And I would say
that about anybody

that I've shared
this space with.

In a time where there's
great uncertainty,

can we use music as
medicine to speak

to the different pains
that we're all feeling?

If we can do that,
mission accomplished.

Honestly, I'm having
more fun making music

than I had since
I first picked up a guitar

and wrote my first
couple of songs.

We're all looking
at each other

like this might be the best
record we've ever made.

Just personally, you know,
who knows if anybody

will like it, but I think
our fans will love it.

I had to add another line.

People coming in with songs
first thing in the morning.

I don't know
what to do with this.

What do I do?

So, we just made another line.

Sorry I don't have
a ruler to make it-

MAN: Uh, we do though.

We could!

We could make it good.

JOSH: Look, I'm just trying

to keep ourselves
organized here.

KONRAD: Packing up,
there's a lot more stuff

than I remember bringing.

It's kind of funny how,
when you get rolling,

you kind of don't
think about it,

and then at the end,

you're looking at
a mountain of equipment.

I really feel like
everybody's personality

is represented in this record.

I'll be there

BEAR: We're going good.

We're all kind of
getting used to it.

Feels like we'd like
it not to end probably.

JOSH: I don't know
how to describe it.

I feel like there's
something between us.

A chair and some cables.

RANDALL: You know,
we love each other.

It's really not any more
complicated than that.

I love these guys.

You notice when Konrad's
working at the console

in back, and he's got
his headphones on,

and we're whispering
what the thing is,

and he's like, "Do you think
we should turn the piano down?"

And we're just like,
"Yeah, we just said that."

Listening to each other
and respecting each other,

we know we'll get to the
place we're trying to go.

Everyone's got the same goals.

JOSH: The goal for us was to
walk away with a record

and go into mix.

We're not gonna take
any time afterwards.

If you don't get it down
while you're in the house,

you don't get it down.

I think making records
is hard every time.

Not in the sense like they
shouldn't be personally hard.

It's hard enough
to make the music.

JOSH: There was never
a moment in my life

where I wanted to
do anything else.

I never thought I kind of
might want to be a doctor,

or I kind of want
to be a firefighter.

All those jobs are great,
but I've always wanted

to do music.

And I can't imagine
doing anything else.

There will be a crazy
appetite for live music,

and hopefully an
appreciation for it.

I just think that that moment,

when you can finally
get back on stage

and people can
celebrate together,

there'll be something kind
of amazing about that.

We're going to go back
into touring

and there's two full
albums ready to roll,

plus all of the songs
that the fans have learned

to love over the years,
so, it's gonna be awesome.

Man, what a difference
a year makes.

Just been a really,
really hard year,

like maybe, probably
the hardest year of my life,

but I'm still here.

I'm so grateful to be here,

and I know that this
record is a special one.

I'm so glad to be a part of it.
