[RADIO] Reports are coming in now that, due to staffing and supply crises and indefinite power outages

[RADIO] the state of Oregon has released all inmates from correctional facilities

[RADIO] at Salem, Columbia River, and Pendleton.

[RADIO] So far, no reports from Washington state prisons, although it has been reported that

[RADIO] ...more than half of all state employees from across the state have either resigned

[RADIO] or failed to show up to work since the crisis began.

No, I'm from Coos Bay. It's over on the coast.

I was living there for a while till I got busted and sent up to the pen.

So what did you get busted for?

I was hanging out with some bad dudes

Then less than a year later, all this happens

Then when I got sent up, my old lady said "Screw this!"

And went to stay with some friends in San Francisco.

Anyway that's where I'm going

I've heard some bad things about San Francisco

So I'm going down there to find her

See if she's all right and maybe get her out of there.

I don't get it, how did you get out?

Prison couldn't keep the lights on any more

All those guys I was riding with

Some of the guys were going, I figured I'd ride along until I had to cut off for San Francisco.

But I guess the plan changed when we met you guys.

No, not really. I'm from Mesquite

We were all going to school up at UNR, at least until the school closed

Then things got so bad, we just had to get out of there.

What happened?

Oh, it was crazy. The instructors stopped showing up for class

The stores and restaurants were closed, you couldn't get food anywhere

Then the power went out, our cell phones were dead,

The gas stations were closed, we couldn't get home.

Then there were these mobs of students, and some of them were people I knew

And they were breaking into buildings and taking everything they could find.

We kept thinking the school would figure things out and they would take care of us...

Then Ben got killed

Who was Ben?

He was Ashley's boyfriend. He was a friend of mine too.

Somebody had shot him and we found him in his car.

All his stuff was gone.

We couldn't even call the police, there weren't any phones.

I don't even know if there were any police left by then.

That's when we knew things were pretty much out of control

I knew about this place because me and Ben hiked up here a lot

So I got a hold of these guys, I told them to head on up, and we took off in the middle of the night.

Where did you get all that?

There's a town about six miles that way, called Stillwater

Mostly Mormons. They're really into food storage.

Anyway, they know about us and they're helping us out with food and stuff.

Stillwater's that way about six miles

There's a creek that runs down the first canyon where we get all our water.

What's that?

Oh, that's a dry lake bed

You don't want to go out there unless you take a lot of water with you.

But this is our place

It's not a Comfort Inn, but we're doing all right

We'll get by, till we find something better.

So where are you from?

You gonna try to get back down there?

I don't think so

I hear it's a war zone down there

Besides, I got these guys to look after.

It seems to be pretty bad down there

A lot of people trying to get out of Las Vegas

But they wind up getting robbed or killed when they hit the dam.

What about Laughlin?

There's a bridge there, and another dam

I haven't heard what it's like down there

I know it's about 50 miles longer if you go that way

If the Hoover Dam doesn't look good when you get down there

You might look up a friend of mine in Boulder City

Name is Rockwell

He knows all about the land down there

If you can find him, and tell him that I sent you

He'll get you across the river.

So what really happened?

Did hyperinflation really cause all this?

Well I wouldn't say hyperinflation "caused" it

But it's what's hurting everybody so much now

The big problem is, it happened so fast that nobody was ready for it

I mean we've had our money system for so long

When something goes wrong with it, nobody knows what to do

Right, I get all that. But why did everybody get so violent?

Well it was kind of like dominoes; one bad thing leads to another

Now if you have a job, and they pay you with money

But you can't buy anything with it

That's why everybody stopped working

The grocery store people, the firefighters, the cops

They were too busy trying to find food

So that's why people started stealing stuff
