South America lies Torres del Paine.

With its jagged mountains,

raging rivers,

deep lakes

and open grasslands,

it's a wilderness full of life.

The perfect arena for a predator
who is a master of stealth...

...an extraordinary puma.

(HIGH-PITCHED CALLING)

Rupestre.
(HIGH-PITCHED CALL)

At eight years old,
she's every inch an apex predator.

(HIGH-PITCHED CALLING)

And like all puma mothers,

a single mum.

She's already raised
two litters of cubs here.

And if she stays the course,

this litter of four
will be her third.

(GENTLE MUSIC)

At six months old,

the time has come for Rupestre
to begin the training

that will prepare them
for adult life alone.

Her cubs have no idea
that in just a few months

they'll be abandoned.

(SOFT PLAYFUL GROWLING)

And Rupestre has
her work cut out

to make expert hunters of them.

(SOFT PURRING AND GROWLING)

(CURIOUS MUSIC)

Ginger, with her vibrant fur,

is the shyest of the cubs.

She carries the wounds
of a recent fight...

and her bruised ego needs rebuilding

if she's going to survive
to adulthood.

Brother Chico is fearless.

But he needs to learn restraint

before his boldness
gets him into trouble.

(BOTH PUMAS GROWLING)

Puma mothers raise cubs
without the help of a father,

who leaves after mating.

Rupestre must single-handedly
provide everything her family needs.

(SOFT SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

Including enough food
for four growing cubs.

So every few days,

she is forced to leave her cubs
behind and go hunting alone.

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

Hidden away on the mountainside,

Ginger, Chico and their sisters
should be safe,

but the park is a dangerous place.

These tiny cubs would be no match
against a full-grown rival.

And the landscape is rife
with competing pumas.

Female pumas mostly live
solitary lives with their cubs.

But territories overlap.

And with the number of cats
in Torres del Paine increasing,

areas once home to a single puma
now support many more.

And more predators means potential
for more competition and conflict.

Rupestre's cubs
have been born into a world

that is getting tougher
all the time.

(DRAMATIC MUSIC)

Pumas have broad tastes...

(GUANACOS CALL ALARMEDLY)

...allowing them to target a variety
of prey in different conditions.

(HIGH-PITCHED CALLING)

And right now,
with cubs to feed,

Rupestre is only interested
in the top prize...

...Guanaco.

(GRUNTING)

Kill one of these big adults

and she can feed her entire family
for several days.

(GUANACO GRUNTS)

But hunting guanaco is hard.

Herds deploy a lookout
and will run if spooked.

But Rupestre has a deadly tool
in her arsenal...

...stealth.

Her favourite way
to dispatch her target

is the ambush hunt.

(GUANACO MAKES HIGH-PITCHED CALL)

She waits patiently
until the herds relax.

(GRUNTING)

(DRAMATIC MUSIC)

Then sneaks
to within striking distance.

Singling out a weaker individual
from the herd,

she silently approaches...

...and waits.

With Rupestre out hunting,

it would be wise for the cubs
to stay out of sight.

Her prey has drawn her more than
a kilometre from their location,

leaving her young
highly vulnerable.

But intrepid Chico is restless.

As he abandons the safety
of the hilltop hideout...

his sisters follow him.

The nearby trees offer a chance
to practice climbing.

And even timid Ginger
can't resist joining in.

(SOFT SENTIMENTAL MUSIC)

(YELPS)

But the cubs have forgotten one of
Rupestre's most important lessons...

...always keep watch for danger.

(DRAMATIC DRUMBEATS)

Their noisy game has piqued
the interest of a huge male

wandering through the territory.

Local guides call him Montero,

meaning huntsman.

Lone male pumas are bad news
for small cubs.

If he hopes to mate with Rupestre,

Montero won't hesitate
to kill them all.

(PLAYFUL GROWLING)

The siblings are oblivious
to the danger they're in...

(PLAYFUL GROWL)

...and mum is nowhere to be seen.

(PUMA GROWLS)

NARRATOR:
As Rupestre prepares to strike,

she doesn't know her family,

over a kilometre away,

are in danger.

The sooner she makes this kill,

the sooner she can return
to protect them.

At top speed, she reaches over a
blistering 60 kilometres an hour.

And with every stride,
she is gaining on the guanaco.

Rupestre is reckoned to be one of
the deadliest pumas in the park.

(DRAMATIC MUSICAL CRESCENDO)

Thankfully, she will eat tonight.

The hunt is over,
but now she faces another problem.

She can't leave the carcass,

but dragging it to the cubs
is a painfully slow process.

Her instinct is telling her
she's already been away too long.

(HIGH-PITCHED CALLING)

(HIGH-PITCHED CALLING)

Pumas don't roar.

Instead, her high-pitched calls
carry to the cubs...

(HIGH-PITCHED CALLING)

...summoning them like a dinner bell.

(HIGH-PITCHED CALLING)

(HIGH-PITCHED CALL IN DISTANCE)

Unknowingly,

the cubs are still being watched
by the mysterious male,

Montero.

But as Chico starts to move
towards his mother's call,

followed by his sisters...

...Montero lets them go.

This time he makes no move
to harm the cubs.

(BROODING MUSIC)

If he has a reason
for sparing Rupestre's family,

for now it is a mystery.

(HIGH-PITCHED CALLING)

Rupestre's call draws the cubs out
of danger towards her kill...

(HIGH-PITCHED CALL)

...where the family
is safely reunited.

(SOFT MUSIC)

A rare moment of contentment

for this hard-working mother.

(MELANCHOLIC MUSIC)

(SOFT GROWL)

But a difficult day is coming.

(SOFT GROWL)

In just a few months,

the time will come
for her to leave her cubs.

And with so many other pumas around,

she needs to be sure they are ready.

(SOFT GROWLING)

Weeks pass and winter kicks in.

Days become shorter...

...temperatures drop...

(WIND HOWLING)

...and the landscape
is transformed by snow.

For Ginger, Chico
and their siblings,

this blizzard is the first time
they've ever seen snow.

(PLAYFUL MUSIC)

(SOFT GROWLING)

Even a friendly play fight is useful
training for these predators...

...as long as you pull some punches.

(SOFT GROWLING)

(WIND HOWLING)

But as the harsh weather intensifies,

the cubs face another
new learning experience...

...hunger.

The guanaco have moved
to lower ground,

hampering Rupestre's
chances of hunting.

All she can offer her ravenous cubs

is a drink from an unfrozen stream.

(TENSE MUSIC)

(WIND HOWLING)

With little shelter,

she waits for the snow to pass,

warming her family as best she can
with the heat of her body.

When the blizzard finally clears,

the need to find food
becomes urgent.

But Rupestre and the cubs aren't
the only ones out hunting.

It's not long before the family
discovers a recently killed guanaco.

But there's a problem.

The puma that killed it
is still eating.

It's the same mysterious male,

Montero,

that the cubs encountered before.

(MENACING DRUMBEATS)

He might be willing to share
some of his meal,

or he could attack.

There's no way to know which.

But with the family so hungry...

...Rupestre must take a gamble.

(SOFT SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

(GROWLS SOFTLY)

(GROWLING SOFTLY)

Bravely, she approaches Montero,

while the cubs anxiously watch on.

(GROWLS SOFTLY)

(GROWLING SLOWLY INTENSIFIES)

(FIERCE SNARLING)

Montero's message is clear...

...stay away.

(SNARLING FIERCELY)

(ROARING)

(ROARING)

But Rupestre isn't giving up yet.

(SNARLING)

If she can hold her nerve,

she may eventually
be allowed to eat.

For the cubs,

it's a tense tutorial on
the subtle art of puma diplomacy.

(CALLS SOFTLY)

But once again,

Chico is breaking rank.

(TENSE MUSIC)

Hungry and impatient,
he leaves his sisters

and heads right into the middle
of the standoff.

If Montero takes offence,

Rupestre will be powerless
to protect him.

(DRAMATIC MUSIC CRESCENDOS)

NARRATOR:
Of all his misadventures,

approaching a fully-grown male
in possession of a kill

is Chico's most reckless move yet.

Montero is more than capable

of killing the cub's entire family.

Astonishingly,

Montero returns to eating,

a signal to the daring youngster

it's OK to approach.

(PENSIVE MUSIC)

As usual,

where Chico leads,

his sisters follow.

(CALLING SOFTLY)

Even cautious Ginger.

Montero's generosity is unusual.

There's only one reason
a male would be so sharing

with a mother and cubs.

Chico, Ginger and their siblings

could have just come
face to face with their father.

(WIND WHISTLING)

(WIND HOWLING)

But Montero is not the only male
sharing Rupestre's territory.

Another interloper
is prowling nearby.

And when Rupestre catches his scent,

she senses he's no friend.

As dusk falls,

she leads her family away.

Her best strategy is to rely on her
intricate knowledge of the terrain

to find a safe space to hide.

But in the far south of Patagonia,

winter nights are long,

and dawn is hours away.

When day finally breaks,

Rupestre is alone and injured.

Under the cover of night,

the unknown male launched
a vicious attack.

Her neck has sustained
a deep puncture...

...and all four cubs are missing.

(SOLEMN MUSIC)

(HIGH-PITCHED CALL)

For two agonising days,

wounded Rupestre wanders
and calls without rest.

But despite her best efforts...

(HIGH-PITCHED CALL)

...there is no reply.

(HIGH-PITCHED CALLING)

Until...

...Chico emerges.

And, as always, one step behind him,

is Ginger.

(HIGH-PITCHED CALL)

In the past,

her willingness
to follow her brother

has led them both into danger.

This time,

by heading out of harm's way,

he appears to have saved her life.

(PURRING)

But their grey sisters
are not with them.

(HIGH-PITCHED CALL)

The days tick by

and Rupestre continues
her heart-breaking search.

(HIGH-PITCHED CALL)

But her daughters are gone.

(WIND BLOWING)

(SOLEMN MUSIC)

Days later,

they are found in a ravine

bearing the wounds of a fight
with the rogue male.

Rupestre will never know
what happened to them...

...and eventually
she abandons her search.

(SOMBRE MUSIC)

It's the first time
she's ever lost part of a litter

and a sign of the tide of change
taking place in the park.

(CURIOUS MUSIC)

Ten weeks later,
and spring has arrived in Patagonia.

Temperatures rise

and the land bursts into life.

(BIRDSONG)

For the animals,

the milder conditions
mark the start of a new chapter.

But pressure is still weighing
on Rupestre.

An unsafe territory is no good
to an apex predator...

...so she moves with her cubs
more than 11 kilometres east

to a different part of her range,

far away from the male
that attacked them.

(GENTLE MUSIC)

Having lost two
of her treasured daughters,

Chico and Ginger
are more precious than ever,

and Rupestre approaches
their training

with a new focus.

(TENSE MUSIC)

The time has come for them
to learn how to hunt.

(GUANACOS TRILLING)

And Rupestre
is their expert instructor.

(GUANACO CALLING)

First,
she singles out a lone guanaco.

(GUANACO TRILLS)

And with a meaningful look

signals the cubs to hang back

while she shows them
how to make the approach.

Ginger is paying close attention.

But troublemaker Chico
is already distracted.

(GROWLS)

Rupestre's hunt is a masterclass.

(INTENSE MUSIC)

Guanaco have exceptional eyesight.

But step by step,

she advances,

freezing the instant
it glances in her direction.

Once she's in striking distance,

she prepares to demonstrate
the most important move of all.

(GUANACO HUFFS)

But bored of waiting,

Chico has spotted
a target of his own.

(GINGER SNARLS)
His sister.

(GINGER AND CHICO GROWLING)

His playfight
blows Rupestre's cover,

and the guanaco makes its getaway.

The cubs still have a lot to learn.

And it's now been a week since
the family had a substantial meal.

If hunting won't work,

Rupestre needs a different approach.

A large bird's nest
could be full of tasty eggs.

But no luck.

(RATTLING CALL)

(PENSIVE MUSIC)

For several more days,
she searches for food,

but finds nothing
but scraps and bones...

as her family gets thinner
and thinner.

(TROUBLING MUSIC)

The carcasses are a worrying sign

that more pumas are hunting
in Rupestre's territory.

And her search for food brings her
face to face with one of them.

(SNARLS)

Risking a fight
in her weakened state

is a dangerous strategy.

(SNARLS)

(GROWLS SOFTLY)

But this time,

the stranger backs down.

After two more days without food,

Rupestre has no choice
but to leave her cubs behind

for the first time since
the loss of her two daughters.

She's weaker than ever...

and the whole family needs to eat.

But she can't risk the cubs
disrupting this hunt.

Summoning all her strength,

Rupestre hones in on her target,

like a sniper.

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

The stakes couldn't be higher.

As she corners a lone guanaco...

...Rupestre's predator instinct
tells her it's now or never.

The guanaco fights for its life.

Rupestre risks being trampled,

maimed or killed,

but she cannot let go.

completely drained.

After a brutal battle...

It's taken everything she has,

but her determination
to feed her cubs

has finally been rewarded.

This kill will keep them alive
for now.

But Rupestre's hunt
was a solo effort.

She can't keep feeding
her family forever.

Time is ticking.

And if her cubs don't improve
their hunting skills soon,

they won't survive.

(GENTLE MUSIC)

For the next few days,

the family stays close
to the carcass

to feed and rebuild strength.

But it isn't long before
the kill draws in a rival.

Rupestre senses this lone female

isn't big enough
to be a real threat.

But Ginger is less welcoming
of the outsider.

(GROWLS)

(CALLING AND GROWLING)

It's the first time
she's ever confronted another puma.

(GROWLS)

(GROWLING)

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

She's not going to let the stranger
eat until she's finished herself.

(LOW GROWLING)

And Chico's got her back.

(SOFT GROWLING)

But then Ginger does something
even more intriguing.

Having eaten her fill,

she stands back,

allowing the female some scraps.

As numbers of cats
in the park increase,

pumas are more likely
to share with strangers...

...in the hope the favour might
be returned later down the line.

(CONDOR SQUAWKS)

It's a smart move,

and may help the cubs
in a few months

when they could be the ones
begging for leftovers.

(GROWLING SOFTLY)

(WIND HOWLING)

The weeks pass and summer sets in
in Torres del Paine.

Days stretch to 16 hours,

flowers bloom.

(FAST UPBEAT MUSIC)

And new life is everywhere.

(BABY BIRDS CHIRPING)

(CALLING SOFTLY)

(WIND HOWLING)

Almost as soon as they are born,

baby guanaco are ready
to escape danger.

(CALLING SOFTLY)

But with puma numbers so high,

guanaco mothers need to be vigilant.

(BOTH CALLING SOFTLY)

Capitalising on the baby boom

is allowing Rupestre to feed Ginger
and Chico's growing appetites.

They're now a year old

and eating almost as much
as adults.

But the cubs are starting to take
a much more active role

in hunting and dispatching the pray.

And Rupestre knows they are almost
ready for the hardest test of all...

...life without her.

(GUANACO CALLING)

On a sunny afternoon in mid-summer,

an exhausted Rupestre rests.

She watches her daughter Ginger
moving like a confident young adult.

(PURRING SOFTLY)

Nearby, a lounging Chico
is powerful and composed.

It's not clear exactly what
she senses that makes up her mind.

But after one final moment
with her family...

(PURRING SOFTLY)

...Rupestre walks away.

Her cubs have no idea
that she won't return.

(SOFT MELANCHOLIC MUSIC)

They face life in an
increasingly challenging park.

But Rupestre has done all she can
to prepare them.

As the world around them changes,

their fate is yet to be decided.

Chico and Ginger wait for her
to return...

but there is no sign of their mum.

At least for now,
they still have each other.

Several kilometres away,

Rupestre is heading
into the mountains...

...following the alluring scent
of a male.

Now that her cubs have grown up,

it won't be long
before she seeks a new mate...

and the struggle to raise a family

will begin all over again.

Two months later
and the cubs are thriving.

Ginger is proving to be
a formidable hunter...

and Chico has graduated
from a risk-taker

into a protective brother.

Although he's still grateful
her cast-offs.

For now, they'll stick together,

but one day they'll separate

and may go on
to have cubs of their own.

(UPLIFTING MUSIC)

They have a lot to live up to.

Rupestre is a predator
of the highest calibre...

...who has raised her cubs
to hunt and problem-solve

so that they may flourish
in a time of great change.

Time will tell
if they are powerful enough

to become her equal.

one place on earth
exceeds all others...

...Patagonia in South America.

At its southern tip,

Torres del Paine is just over
1,800 square kilometres.

A vast wilderness
rich with wildlife.

This is a place
where conservation has ensured

that predators and people
can coexist.

And the Puma here are doing well.

But as their numbers increase,

it's not without its challenges.

Local filmmaker Diego Araya

and his specialist trackers
helped the Predators team

to tell the story
of a South American icon,

the legendary Rupestre.

(HIGH-PITCHED CALL)

She's already raised
two sets of cubs,

an impressive achievement
for this eight-year-old cat.

Now, as she brings up
her third litter,

the pressure is on
for her to keep them alive

and pass on the skills they need
to survive without her.

After following Rupestre
for five years,

Diego is more determined
than ever to capture her

at this pivotal moment
in her life.

It was amazing to
follow what happened

and unravel the puzzle

and continue joining their life.

NARRATOR: As apex predators,

the puma rules this world.

But elsewhere,
these cats are persecuted,

victims of habitat loss
and hunting.

To Diego and his team,

pumas are precious.

DIEGO: I'm almost 50 and I've spent
my life with these incredible cats.

I'm very grateful to have
the opportunity to do this.

I have a very special connection
with this main predator,

so I love them so much. (LAUGHS)

(GENTLE MUSIC)

NARRATOR: This community
of trackers and filmmakers

have devoted their lives
to understanding

and protecting
these impressive cats.

Despite their years in the field,

capturing footage of Puma in
this vast and remote landscape

is no easy task.

DIEGO: It requires a teamwork,

so I take my hat off to trackers.

NARRATOR: The only way
for the trackers to cover

this uneven and rugged terrain

was on foot.

They worked in all weathers,

scouting far and wide
to locate the pumas.

(RADIO BEEPS)
OK, copy, copy.

There is something.

The rain, the wind,
never stopped, never.

It's winter, you have
less 20 degrees Celsius.

If it's summer,
you have wind gusts over 120,

and you just can't quit.

NARRATOR: But the rewards
made it worthwhile.

ROBERTO: Scanning all the area,
and suddenly they appear.

Oh! (LAUGHS)

Magic.

NARRATOR: Boosting
their surveillance skills

with technology
helped locate elusive pumas.

Thermal scopes revealed
their body heat,

making them more identifiable
out on the plains.

It's basically cheating,

but now our success increased

from, let's say, 60%

to 90 or 100%

with that change of technology.

NARRATOR:
While puma numbers are high,

the vast and endless terrain

didn't make it easy
for the team to find them.

First-person view drones allowed
them to quickly scan the area

in which this puma family live.

(DRONE WHIRRING)

NARRATOR:
Luckily, Diego's team had

one more incredible asset
on their side,

the puma that allowed them
to get closer than any other...

...Rupestre.

(MAJESTIC MUSIC)

One of the most iconic puma
in the park.

A protective mother,

whose four cubs depend on her
now more than ever.

I've known her for many years,

and that's something
that is really, really special.

I love her, of course,
like, it's Rupestre!

She's maybe
the more important puma ever

in the story of Torres del Paine.

NARRATOR: Her trust
of the trackers and film crew

enabled them to capture her life
in astonishing detail.

NARRATOR: It was a constant race
for the team to keep up,

as she battled to feed her family

in exceptionally challenging circumstances.

DIEGO: It's really tiring
because you need to find them

and be faster than them
or at least keep up with them.

ROBERTO: Come here,
come here quickly. 150 meters.

Come, come here,
up the hill, please.

She's running.

(GUANACO CALLING)

NARRATOR: Even when positioned
in the right place,

at the right time...

...the landscape sometimes proved
too testing for those on her trail.

After weeks following Rupestre,

the trackers feared the worst.

They were concerned that the family
still hadn't had a substantial meal.

(CALLS SOFTLY)

It was very, very stressful

because the cubs were growing,
so they need a lot of food.

NARRATOR: When Diego and his team
had all but given up hope,

they witnessed a hunt
like never seen before.

(TENSE MUSIC)

That's probably one of
the best hunts I've ever seen,

and it took us so long
to get there.

Wow.

NARRATOR: After a tense
and exhausting 20 minutes,

Rupestre triumphed.

This battle became the centrepiece
of her powerful story.

And her cubs were able
to feed once more,

taking the next crucial step
to independence.

(DRAMATIC MUSIC)

But while the protection provided
in this region

allowed the team to capture
this amazing hunt

and for Rupestre
and her family to thrive...

...Diego and his trackers
have witnessed

increasing numbers of pumas

who are being pushed beyond the park
into areas less protected

and increasingly coming into contact
with humans and livestock.

Farming is big business
in Patagonia

and it is home to millions of sheep,

tempting prey for a hungry puma.

(SHEEP BLEATING)

Local conservationists are seeking
solutions to strike a balance

between the needs of the puma

and the livelihoods of locals.

We're doing a great job here,

learning about these cats
and keeping them safe.

We are trying to combine that

with the traditions
and the sheep farming.

(BLEATING)

NARRATOR: One solution
is hiding amongst the flock.

NARRATOR: A barking dog
is all that's needed

to send a puma on its way.

(DOG BARKS)

But when pumas stalk at night,

a little extra technology
is needed to deter these cats.

A bespoke light show
to stop them in their tracks.

GINO: So there are these, uh, sticks

that stand about over two meters
from the ground,

and you get this panel,
solar panel,

with LED lights on the sides.

They pretty much think that
there's human activity happening

and they rather not approaching.

NARRATOR: This flashy deterrent
is a game changer.

Innovative ideas like these

means that Patagonia now leads

a conservation story behind,

but normally those stories
are sad stories.

We're here to talk
about a happy story.

The pumas are better than
20 years ago,

and we can learn from that

and even apply it to other animals
that are threatened.

This is not just a film,

this is not us taking
beautiful pictures of cats.

We are doing conservation

and we can improving
our relationship with wildlife,

which is amazing.
