Belo Horizonte was only 11 years of age

when Atlético was founded.

The city was a settlement of miners,

coming from all corners of the state.

And Galo helped to sew
this patchwork in our social fabric.

The club for the poor, the rich,

for men and women,

Anyone who wanted could be Galo.

This represented much more
than a football club.

It was also the utopia
of a better world.

It was an afternoon
of March 25th, 1908.

The dream started then.

A group of boys of
14, 15 years old,

started meeting in the park,

with the idea of creating a football team.

My grandmother, Alice Neves,
decided to support them.

Firstly, she designed
and made their uniforms.

Then, a proper training
ground was in order.

So they found an abandoned lot,

cleared and weeded it themselves,

with such an enthusiasm and joy, a dream!

My grandmother visited each boy

to ask for their authorization
so girls could form a fan club.

Fifty girls joined.

She had so much love
for all that she planted…

She was the one who started it all,
her and the kids...

We are where everything began.

The Municipal Park, to this date,

is still a pleasant place,
frequented especially by the poor.

Atlético was founded 1908.

América some years later,
their centenary year must be near.

And Cruzeiro was founded
in the early 1920s.

So Atlético was
the city's football club,

one who didn't leave any supporter out.

It wasn't neither
the team of the elites,

like América claimed to be,

nor the immigrants club
like Palestra, Cruzeiro's original name.

It was the city's club.

My grandpa
was a Cruzeiro supporter.

Never stepped in a football stadium.

Mr. Moisés Kalil.

They were neighbors
with a family of black people.

Both marginalized groups,
Arabs and blacks.

So a great friendship flourished

between my grandfather
and the Fileto family.

And they were Atleticanos.

My grandfather
didn't care much for football,

and my father was a kid.

And this Fileto,
an older black guy,

asked my grandfather

if he could take Elias,
my father, to the stadium.

But he only attended Atlético games,

so he was the reason
my father became an Atleticano.

It was a Cruzeiro-Atletico
derby in a final.

You'll pick the one you want to support.”

He spoiled me so much.

So to the game we went.
By train.

It was at the Independência Stadium,

we were seated on this sector here.

Grandpa told me
to pay attention to the teams' entrance.

So Cruzeiro walked in,

They lost every time against Atletico, so…

When Galo walked in
everything went crazy,

we won 5 consecutive
State Championships for the first time,

by the feet of other heroes

such as Zé do Monte and Ubaldo,

because
“They didn't allow blacks there.”

Mother used to wash
Kafunga's jersey,

his shorts were
made of flour sacks.

I was still a girl
when she washed his clothes,

we lived in Ceará Street.

they all say
that they're like this.

That they're different.

So they start saying this,
that they're different,

that Atleticanos are different,
they all say that.

And it turns into the truth,
they're all like this, period.

They're known for it nowadays,

for never jumping ship,

for being passionate,
for being believers even in defeat...

I still can't believe
I am the Marvelous Dadá, Dario...

I went through some hard times,
an outlaw life.

Skipped school to steal from people,
stabbed people.

But I ran like crazy from the cops,

my speed was unbelievable.

And my jumping reach was amazing,

when I jumped over walls to rob houses,

to climb on mango trees,
to steal them...

It was a tumultuous life.

I was used to being
detained for ten days or so,

they kicked me out, I moved around.

After that, when I was 18,
I went to the army.

In there, I started
to play some football.

The first time
I kicked a ball, I was 19.

When I first arrived in Atlético,

the crowd
started to chant “Galo!”,

it shook me to the core.

I thought,
"What a crazy mob!"

I wasn't so hot,
people didn't want me there,

other players badmouthed me
to the coach.

"This guy is so bad..."

Coach said:
"You're saying he's bad,

but the papers in Rio
say he's a goalscorer."

The training started,
Lola passed me the ball,

I scored twice.

But I also booted one so high,
I killed a vulture,

another one hit the corner flag.

So Coach Yustrich
approached me and said,

“Boy, you're not that bad.”

I said, “Want to see me turn
this thing around?"

Put me with the starters."

Atlético Mineiro
has the biggest flag in the world

and unstoppable supporters.

Even against the
Brazilian national team,

Galo showed up
like a title was at stake.

It was a festive friendly

after the qualification
to the next World Cup,

but the miners
were all about winning.

The national team
attacked a few times,

Atlético persisted
and the first goal came.

to come to Belo Horizonte

to test for Atlético's U-18 team.

I was 14.

And they put us
against the first team,

the one which won
the National Championship in 1971.

Naturally, I started as a sub.
It was a try-out.

So they put me in
for the last 20 minutes or so.

So there I was,
playing against Grapete, Vantuir.

I dribbled around,

nutmegged them,
even scored a goal.

So I caught the attention of the coaches,

in my first day,
in my first 20 minutes.

With Reinaldo,
there was not other way.

He was a born goalscorer.
And what a class.

He placed the shots where he wanted.

You can't make a player like that,
he's born.

Reinaldo is unsettling.

He could feint his way out
of two or three players

if you gave him a square meter
to work with.

After that first dribble,
they went for his knees.

The people won't forget his immortal name

Reinaldo is phenomenal!

Atlético was always the fierce,
tough team.

So Reinaldo came to show that

you could be tough,
but also technical.

That guts and finesse
could coexist in football.

We talk about Messi, Maradona…

Reinaldo is up there with them.

In my opinion,

the second best
Brazilian player ever, following Pelé.

It's not Zico or Sócrates,
nobody.

Nobody did what Reinaldo did.

Reinaldo had the genius spark.

And that's why he was
hunted around the pitch.

If you knew him,

you'd know that even walking down
a flight of stairs

He didn't look like a pro player.

He went through
several knee procedures

the generals didn't enjoy that.

It's a socialist gesture,

of revolutionary verve,
of rebellious spirit.

People were getting more
politicized, so the gesture

gained a racial connotation
later on,

with the Black Panthers...

It was a way of escaping
the dictatorship's surveillance.

When Reinaldo celebrated his goals

using the Black Panther's closed fist,

he was saying,
“No, enough!”

To the military dictatorship.

And I'll say something,
not as a delusional Atleticano,

it's well known that
there was an organized effort

against Atlético
and Reinaldo that time.

We were kind of a resistant group.

General Ernesto Geisel told me

I should keep
kicking balls around

and leave politics to them.

I was speechless.
What could I say to a General?

The greatest moment
of his career in Atlético

was the 1977 National Championship,

when he was playing
uninjured for the first time,

had just started a new treatment,

his knees weren't
bothering him anymore.

That was a spectacular year for him.

Soon before the final,

Atlético was still invincible,

with a 10-point lead off São Paulo,

the court tried and
suspended Reinaldo,

so he couldn't play the final.

He was sent off
early in the championship,

so they held off on the trial

until the appropriate moment,
to keep him off the pitch.

Serginho was sent off
a week before the match.

I was sent off a year before.

Why didn't they try me?

It was rough,
because Reinaldo...

scored 27 or 28 goals that year.

It was a fantastic year for us,

we were unbeaten.

And we played the finals against
São Paulo here in Mineirão,

a hundred thousand people
in attendance.

I had...

I did everything right,
it was a nice buildup…

Belo Horizonte had never seen
a sadder day.

created an accelerated pace
of expansion,

reflected on the great quantity
of building sites

aiming to meet
the ever-growing needs of commerce,

industry and liberal professionals.

Counting with around 70 sports venues,

Belo Horizonte chose football
as its favorite pastime.

Brazil hosted the 1950 World Cup.

It was the year of a
fantastic Atlético tour.

Germans who were here for the World Cup

had a project of inviting
football clubs overseas,

in order to improve
Europe's football technique,

particularly that of Germany.

For Atlético, this was memorable.
It will be forever in our history.

We were the first
Brazilian club to tour like that.

We opened the doors
for the rest of Brazilian football.

The last match we played in Paris,

it was twelve below zero.

Some players in our squad
passed out after the final whistle

and had to be put in a hot bath
to recover their senses.

Some Brazilian sailors

were stationed there
on a Brazilian Navy ship,

so they attended that match.

There were around
15 Brazilians there.

They made more noise

than the 40 thousand
Germans in the stadium.

And in the next day's paper
the headlines were:

“Atlético Mineiro came
to teach football to the German”.

I was around 5 or 6 when they left,

and my mother took
me and my siblings

to the airport
to welcome my father back.

It was packed with people.

The main avenue
was taken on both sides.

It was madness.

When we arrived
at the main avenue,

all the buses,
the party, the fireworks...

I lived this, I did.

After the shady deals of 1977,

the behind-the-scenes
manipulations kept happening.

In 1979,
when the championship rules

were changed
during the semifinals,

Atlético decided to leave
the National Championship.

In 1980, Atlético

media-sponsored Flamengo,

and its squad built
by legendary TV mogul Walter Clark.

To the dictatorship,
on its last breaths,

the first national title
to the country's most popular team

was music to military ears.

Even more so
if the contender was Reinaldo

and his defiant closed fist
in the generals' faces.

We have the presence
of His Excellency,

João Batista Figueredo,

in the stands of Maracanã…

Reinaldo returned
during my tenure.

This was when Dario,
always very intelligent,

told me there couldn't be
two kings in the same squad.

So he asked for a transfer,
as Reinaldo was coming back.

With these guys,
the 1980 Atlético squad is,

in my humble opinion,

its best team of all time.
