People are smiling and
they're crying, and they're hugging

and they're drinking bubbly -
and you know what?

This house was meant to do that.

an extraordinary family home,

bursting with love...

was built 150 years ago.

But, as it was constructed on
top of a 12th-century fortress,

the prospect of finding treasure
is a possibility.

are rather keen to check out.

other precious metals, OK?

It's not about just
finding treasure.

Although that would be
absolutely lovely, you know,

it, kind of, reminds us that
there was people here before us.

Ancl we're just the custodians,
and we know that.

Today's expedition may not have
been the most lucrative, but...

...eight years ago, when
Dick and Angel first unlocked

the door to their new chateau...

We are in!

...it was like opening
an enormous treasure chest.

The family were just going to clear
it out and just bin everything.

We said, "No, just leave it.
It's OK, we'll do it."

Couldn't believe our luck.

Where do we start here?

Oh-ho-ho!

Memorabilia of the chateau's
original owners,

the Baglioni family...

That has somebody's initial on.

...who lived here from 1870s.

It's their running costs,
what they ate,

what they spent their money on.

This is how they lived!

Stories from a bygone era...

These are beautiful.

...that Dick and Angel have always
been very keen to maintain.

Even creating in one of the turrets,
a Tower of Curiosities,

and filling it with
the ephemera of their finds.

That looks amazing.

It actually looks like
it's levitating there.

I don't come in here often enough
and look around, and just think,

"Oh! That was from the roof."

We found the sword,
we found in the barn with Arthur.

Do you remember dancing
to the records,

across in the Orangery? I do.

It was more like wrestling,
because you kept wanting to lead.

OK, it's up.

It's up, and it looks great.

And, even after eight years,

there's still the possibility of
finding more treasures from

the past inside their enormous
200-square-metre attic.

This is representative of
the floor space in the attic.

The stairs continue up
for another floor,

which is now the
Observatoire de Chateau.

Ancl on this side of the building,
we have a huge, big room,

with a lot of cathedral - it's like
all the way up to the apex.

That's big old space.

On that floor,
we've got Angela's tresorie,

and that's looking lovely.

The corridor in the middle is where
we have all of the heat storage,

all the pumps, and all the mechanism
for heating the house is there.

Ancl that room at the back,
that's what we're using as our attic

to keep things, as is this end.

But if we look at this area,

the key thing is, this is huge.

Ancl we have a little chimney
breast in the middle of it,

and there's an area here -
and the area, as you go up the steps

and look around to the left,
is dark. It's horrible.

This whole area there,
nobody has played with at all.

OK? That's unlooked at.

The rest of this is one huge,

big space available...
to be played with.

"Play" being the operative word -

because with Arthur
and Dorothy growing up fast,

Dick and Angel are keen for them to
have their own space in the chateau.

A games room they can
call their own.

Oooh!

First, though, there's
a bit of clearing to do.

This is a massive job, isn't it?

And, amongst the mishmash
of Straw bridge stuff

and Baglioni bits and pieces...

...there is one very dark
and dusty corner...

Right come on,
come with me, come with me.

...that, even eight years
after moving in,

still needs to be investigated.

It's time to explore the scary bit.

Oh, I don't really want to,
I've got my brave gloves on.

Oh, my goodness.

is probably 20 years old.

Great...lovely.
It's a horrible thing.

But because I left it there,
no-one's gone into that hole.

That's just after the start
of the Second World War.

The world had changed big-time
when this was sent out.

Wow. That's lovely.
We're keeping that.

Needs a clean, but it's worth
keeping. Absolutely.

It's like little glimmers of
how the Baglionis lived.

It's interesting because treasure
isn't all about monetary value.

We're just collecting bits
of history and things

that just can't be replaced.

That's... It's incredible.

We're collecting the story, kid.

But, as well as collecting
memories from the past...

Found the lid of a potty. Nice.

...Angel's thoughts are also
focusing on the future.

I'm looking around, even just now,
and I think I see this

being a hobbying area.

This is where you have your
train set, or your racetrack,

or something - as opposed
to a play room,

it's a, sort of,
hobbying-type place.

And as Dick and Angel continue
to chip away at the enormous

pile of paraphernalia...

There is a massive amount of stuff
to be taken out of here.

...even more trinkets and treasures

left behind by the Baglioni
family begin to emerge

That's gotta be cleaned up,
hasn't it, that side saddle?

You know the way you get
a cross for sawing wood on -

if you put it on that,
it could be sat on.

It could be sat on.

Look, look! Old letters, Dick.

More? Yeah, more. Look at this.

Well clone, let's have
a look at that.

So, it's eight shares in
a gold-mining company

that's gone into liquidation.
It's in liquidation.

Does that mean we own
eight shares in that?

Cos we have that bit of paper?

We could be gold-mining...

That's like treasure!

We'll keep that, that's worth
a little bit of research.

Of course it is.

This is a bit of an interesting
corner.

It's Angel's next find, though,

that's not only worth more
than gold...

Ooh, look at that!

...but rubber-stamps their plans
to turn the attic into a games room.

I have never seen a train
set like it - hold that.

How lovely is that?
That is just adorable.

I do see it as a bit of a sign,
because you have said about

a train set in here,
or something of the equivalent...

You're talking about getting more
for the children? Yeah, absolutely.

I think there is room for a train
set. I think there is.

Oh... And, by the way...

At the top of the chateau,
a new games room is being created.

And now it's been cleared,

the five-and-a-half-metre-high
ceiling can be insulated,

and the turret space in the corner

emptied of 150 years'
worth of pigeon poo.

This is...pretty grim.

As well as the occasional
interesting find.

Here we go, a classic!

Oh, yeah.

Next door, in her attic workshop,

Angel's trying to work out
how to hold on to the past -

but at the same time,
create new memories.

The star piece.

Honestly, I can only imagine the
joy that this train set

brought the Baglionis.

Ancl it feels really lovely,
bringing the old

and the new together.

Ancl I think this space is going
to be a mixture of that.

I'm expecting there
to be magnets and winches,

and glue guns and little saws,
and benches.

Ancl I joked to Dick about having
a workbench like my dad's.

But I want this to be a place
for them to learn new things.

Angel also knows that now Arthur
and Dorothy are getting older,

it's time, whether she
likes it or not,

to give them some space.

The kids need a little bit
of independence,

they need to be able to go off
and not be in their bedroom,

and not be in the room next door,
so I can keep an eye on them.

They need their space
to go and do things,

and potentially just hang
out with friends.

They're going to grow into it,
aren't they? And I think...

I think that's the exciting thing.

Plans for the games room
are still evolving.

But outside, a new grown-up
toy has just arrived.

Oh-ho, yes! Oh, look at the wheels.

67 years old and the engine
may not run that well,

but Dick and Angel
couldn't resist it.

It looks a bit like
a Morris Minor for me.

because it's not running yet,

the wheel straps off...

I'm actually not looking
forward to this.

I've not driven a manual car for...

Then, to roll it,
what I need for you to do is

Now, we're going to ease back
a little bit more.

Don't move the steering wheel
at all. I'm not. just relax.

I'm just holding on to something.

a bit of tinkering to do

before any fun can be had.

and Dick has some technical
tidying-up to do at

the top of the chateau.

That bloody basement's
a long way away. Woo!

Steve and Rob are finishing
off the insulating,

they're getting the
plasterboards up.

Steve Beachel, Beachy's up there
skimming off on top.

Ancl I get to play with electrickery.

Fortunately, my background
is electricity,

so it doesn't scare me.

And it's a job that he knew
he'd have to do one day.

We're above the tower,
in the Potagerie.

There's sockets, sockets, light.

Ancl five years ago, it seemed like
a good idea to put the cables

on the floor and just leave enough
slack to play with it later.

This is now later.

Which makes it a pain in the bobo.

Well, you don't make omelettes
without breaking eggs.

There's a lot of soft bits.

It's all been wood-wormed,

and we'll put some
new boards in here.

But for that we need
to make cables disappear.

There's still work to do
on the floor, walls and ceiling

before Angel can add her
decorative touch.

But outside,
two trainees have requested

a masterclass in mechanics.

Daddy's rules, Daddy's workshop. OK?

We don't have to tell
Mummy anything.

So, if you bleed,
I've got a first aid kit.

So, what happens in the workshop
stays in the workshop.

We're looking at CV.

You see there's four tubes here.

Look at this one -

In there, there's something that
goes up and down...like a syringe,

and what's going to suck in is
a mixture of petrol and air.

Because you need air
to burn things, don't you?

So, it's sucking in,
then we squeeze it up.

So, it's a squeeze.

Then we have to put a spark on it.

Yes. Boom!

The bang makes this go down
force big and strong.

Ancl then, it goes...

...and it blows out the bits,
out the exhaust.

So, suck, squeeze...

Bang, blow. ..bang, blow.

ALL: Suck, squeeze, bang, blow.

Now we have to do it all
one after each other,

because if we all do it the same
time, there'll be one big bang!

Suck. Suck. Suck.

Squeeze. Squeeze. Squeeze.

BOTH: Bang.

We've got to make our
engine do this, by the way.

I think we need to just double check
and see if we've got a spark.

So, see that little gap, a little
spark should jump across that.

So, you two watch that for a spark.

Move away Arthur, come away.

Dorothy is in charge of
health and safety.

Now, I'm going to hold this
and hope I don't get electrocuted.

All ready? Yeah.

OK, Arthur, turn it on.

Right, so, I think we have
to see if we can get this started.

But the carburettor is a problem.

Quite pleased with that.

Why are you happy that
there's a problem?

At the start, I didn't know
what the problem was.

I knew I had a problem,
but I didn't know what it was.

Now I know what it was,
I can fix it.

In the attic workshop,

Angel's now busy coming up with
some creative camouflage.

Our attic is looking like
a different attic, honestly.

It really is. However,

now we've moved on a little
bit with everything...

...there's a doorway into
Dick's thermo-store,

and it's a bit unfinished,
let's say.

So, I thought,
"I need to block that off."

I didn't want a door.

So, I had loads of this
macrame cord and the bamboo,

obviously, we've got
a lot of bamboo.

And, you know, I'm always
doing things that only take

a few knots, because I like
things to be, you know,

look quite good, but minimum effort.

So, this is all lark head knots,

and that is easiest knot
in the world.

But to keep it in place -
and this is quite important -

you need to do the knot
that I'm doing now,

because otherwise, they can sort of
move a little bit, which is fine

if you weren't going to do
the kids' initials.

So, Angel's using a horizontal
clove hitch knot to keep

the cords in line,

and a vertical one to create
Arthur and Dorothy's initials.

It's really quite simple,
as long as you can remember

to go over and under.

So, on this one,
I'm always having my green under,

and I'm literally just doing a knot.

Just taking it to the back,
kind of, where I want it to be.

Then I'm doing another knot.

I think that's always
the beauty of macrame,

because it always looks quite
fun and impressive.

When you break it down,
anyone can do it.

Right, stand clear!

Outside, Dick and his fellow
mechanics have finished

theirjiggery-pokery,
and Bordeaux Rose -

as she's now known -
is ready to run.

Hold on, better stop it.

That moved quite quickly,

Oh, it's very dusty.

Everything needs a good wipe-down,
it's been really dusty and horrible.

But when they launched
the smaller and more affordable

Dublo range in 1938...

...by the 1950s, owning a
model railway had become rather

a lot of boys' - and daddies' -
favourite hobby.

I always wanted a turntable.

Sorry. Oh, my gosh.

It's actually like Christmas
for you. Sh, sh.

I didn't know any of this.

You can have different
lines coming in.

Ancl you can...and it locks.

Is this your first train set?

Yes, it is.

Ohh, look at that little bad boy,

Ancl are they actually proper,
like, sort of, ratio-down models?

Yeah, double-oh. Right.

Similar to like the doll's houses,
I guess. Exactly.

There's so much to be played with.

So do you think the table will
be big enough for that, Dick?

Or do you need to have a play?

Yes, please, a cup of tea
would be lovely.

This is just...look at this.

Up at the top of the chateau,

it's time for Angel to start
turning the gargantuan games room

into a cosy den.

Up here, with the high apex
of the house,

this space is huge,
and it has been such a team effort.

Because everything needed to
be brought up 100 stairs,

and it needed that manpower.

But honestly,
within a couple of weeks,

everything was plaster-boarded.

It has very quickly come from
somewhere that was full of

so much old junk to something that
has so much potential now

for the children.

Ancl the finish is just lined,
and I love it.

You don't need to paint that.
It's just that beautiful,

natural stone colour.

This, however, is not.

This was beastly.

You know, the wood is softwood -
there's nothing nice about it

except for it's big.
It's fantastic.

The kids can have a side each.

I mean, this cupboard has been
here for, like, 150 years.

Ancl it absolutely needed painting.

Now this leaves me and Dick to agree
on what'll happen to the floor.

Because I don't want to paint it
this blue, which we did upstairs.

I think I want carpet.

Ancl we haven't got carpet
anywhere in the house.

I just feel like it feels right.

Because it's going to add
a real softness up here.

Ancl the potential for this room...

Oh, it's just going
to be so fantastic.

In his workshop,

Dick has not only decided that the
new model railway needs setting up

to see if it works, but also
that he's the man for the job.

We've got a lot of lovely toys
to play with here.

HE LAUGHS

So, I'm doing a very simple
track to begin with.

Yeah. And this - whoever believed
I'm going to have a turning circle.

That's wonderful.

Really good, electrical
connection at every one.

There we go.

My clad loved Christmas.

What he loved most was
Christmas Eve,

because he got to set everything up
and play with everything

in advance of the children.

They had to make sure things were
assembled, put together and working.

You know what?
That is a very simple train track.

It's time to choose.

Who's going to be the first
to have a little go.

Guess what?

Silver King.

What's the old saying?
"Youth is wasted on the young."

I'm only doing this because
I have to test it for my children.

Doesn't even sound convincing.

Come on.

Now, that may not have seemed much,

but it made me very happy.

And backwards.

Dick may be the chateau's
chief engineer...

Choc-choc'.!

...but Angel has the creativity,

and can currently be
found in the kitchen,

cooking up miniature landscapes.

The train set for
the children is going to be,

it's going to be joyous.

I'm not sure if more for Dick
or Arthur, or Dorothy yet.

Really, I don't. But the little
packets of official train set stuff,

they're really expensive.

Ancl the landscape is
a big part of the train set.

So, first of all,
I'm going to dry out some dirt

and put it through a sieve -
if I feel like it'll be really fine.

I do feel a little bit guilty,

because I bought this dehydrator
for Dick, for his birthday.

But I use it more than him.

But I've never put the dirt
in it from the garden.

OK. Now we're going
to make some extra...

...because it's all about
height and texture,

and different colours.

I mean, you know,
you go out even in our garden.

There's a trillion different,
like, greens and browns,

so I think the more
realistic it's going to be,

and the more fun
they're going to have.

Ancl actually, when you think
about what we've got available,

gosh, there is so much stuff!

This is all sawdust from
Dick's workshop.

And adding acrylic paint and water
will give it a more earthy look.

Let's see how this actually works.

In the world of model railways,

building landscapes is known as
scenery building - or scenicking -

and often very accurately
based on real locations.

Now this is little offcuts
from seat foam.

You're always cutting bits
and pieces off when you're

upholstering chairs and stuff.

Ancl we never chuck anything away.

So why not? Let's give it a go.

See what happens, eh?

I did ask my husband, because
I didn't want to get into trouble,

if I could use the blender
for some foam.

Actually, thinking about it,

maybe he thought I meant,
like, foamed milk or foam.

Oh, well, let's see what happens.

Right, that's not bad, actually.

Oh, it's like getting
toothpaste out.

There is quite a nice,
sort of, variation.

Ancl I'm going to sprinkle them.

We're going to have some greens
and browns, and lighter browns.

What this one gives me
is another texture.

Kind of, something that
looks a little bit more rocky.

Dick would be proud.

Outside, a momentous event
is about to happen.

The first fully-fitted carpet
in the chateau's history

is going in the games room.

And everyone, including Petal,
is inordinately excited.

Petal! It's called a carpet!
It's so exciting.

It's called a carpet,
and you get to sit on it!

As long as Sasha doesn't
see your muddy feet.

But as there's almost
60 square metres to cover,

it first needs to be cut
into two more manageable pieces.

Tuck it in. Tuck it in.

And then, it's just a simple
matter of rolling them up...

PETAL BARKS

...extracting

...and carrying them to the attic.

How come I'm getting the back?

ANGEL LAUGHS

I can't get over how much excitement
has been caused by the carpet.

It's been fantastic. You know what?

That room up there has been made
100 times more difficult by the fact

that it's that room up there.

Right, I think I can help.

Right, hold on, hold on...

Unfortunately, getting a heavy
carpet up there involves...

Hold on. ..six staircases.

...five very tight corners...

...and almost 100 steps.

We're nearly there.

That's not funny!

That's it.

How many pieces?!

At the top of the chateau,
a new games room is being created.

I actually...

...think this is the comfiest
room in the house.

It's because of the carpets.

Angel's plan is for it
to have three distinct areas -

the main room, for playing games,

the turret, for sitting in.

And Pigeon Corner - also known
as "the uncarpeted craft corner" -

for more messy pursuits.

When it comes to the areas,

that area over there
is being kept over there,

it has a very different feel to it.
So, that's workshoppy. Yes.

Carpet, play, comfort,
and being able to paint,

get glue on the floor, etc.

But I'm twitching
because it's beige,

so let's get some furniture in
and stop the twitching.

Let's go. Let's get
something up here first.

Mind the step, Dick.

Right, should we leave this over
here for the minute, if we're...?

You don't know where it's going.
Yeah.

The beauty about all
this sort of thing,

is wherever we put it,
I know it'll never end up.

It's finding zones, isn't it?

Angel might still be working
out what goes where...

I think this can be
the hockey table zone.

Using that? Yeah.

...but she's hoping Dick can turn
the doors from the old cupboard

into modern workbenches.

I would love there to be a little
semicircle cut out of it,

like my dad's workbench.

You've just got this area
around you. I'll have a look.

The only thing is, it's a door.
It's got all the joints in it.

I know that's, why I don't
know if it's possible.

Let's see what the doors are like.

All right, let's have a look.

Angel's father, Papi Steve,
may be retired,

but he still uses the beloved
jeweller's bench that

he's owned for over 50 years.

And, as it's designed
for detailed work,

the curved shape's perfect
for hobbies and crafts.

All Dick has to do is make
one each for the kids.

Right, the workbench is a door.

Ancl that's going to have legs on it.

It's going to have a piece
of wood against the wall.

So, that's the basis of it,
but instead of it being

a plain workbench,
Angela's drawn the curve -

and the idea is you put a little,
sort of, piece of material

underneath it, so when the children
are working with little fine bits,

anything drops gets caught
in the material.

It's quite a simple
and a nice idea.

Doors for workbenches aren't
necessarily the best thing

in the world, because,
apart from anything else,

the way they're actually made,
you don't want to weaken them.

Ancl to give it some integrity,
I've put a piece of thin ply

underneath it, so it's
a door supported by ply.

Just like Angel's father,

Dick treats his workbench
like an old friend.

This whole concept here,
all these little saw marks,

all these screws that have been
drilled through and into it,

each one of those holes
means something. That's history.

Just shows that it's loved.

A thought that Dick's hoping
Arthur and Dorothy will continue.

There'll be a little bit
of paint on there from

the first bit of painting they do.

There'll be a cut from
the first time they saw things.

History, isn't it?

There you go.

The door of the cupboard that was
there when we arrived, is now...

...a workbench.

Up in the new games room,

the old toys that were once hidden
in dark, dusty corners

are now being given pride of place.

We found this in the attic,

quite near the train set.

So, I think, once upon a time,
they lived together.

Ancl it sends your mind boggling,
doesn't it?

Because you think,
we found an old train set,

we found this, and...

They had loads of kids,
the Baglioni's were a big, big,

big family, and their cousins
and their uncles, and everybody

would've been here.

Ancl I just think, did that
happen up in in the attic?

Because, you know, we found
a billiard table up here.

Or did they just not want to
throw any history away?

I'm looking forward to telling
the kids that, you know,

this is part of the history,
this is the old -

and they'll be doing the new,
doing their own stuff.

Ancl honestly, I cannot wait to start
doing stuff like this with the kids.

I think Dick is quite
excited by it, too.

This does feel a bit weird,
sort of, dressing the

train set table with scenery.

Well, pots of sand and
dyed sawdust, and foam.

But it's here for the kids
to take it to the next level.

I think they'll be
really happy with this,

because honestly,
this is the start.

As well as toys both old and new,

Angel has ensured
the chateau's past lives on,

no matter how inconsequential.

I just didn't think that
six pieces of, sort of, paper,

postcards, and old cardboard
would make me so happy here.

You know, the fact that
we found an old playing card

makes it feel like we've clone the
right thing with this room.

In Craft Corner,

now the home-made jeweller's
benches have been fitted,

and the cloths for catching
tiny bits and pieces attached,

the room's ready for even
the most intricate of ideas.

I actually shouldn't feel
like this about a cupboard door

and a couple of shammies, but I do!

Because they're just little
versions of what my Dad had,

and what I just remember as a child.

What once was used to store cheese,

now being used
to hold their tools.

The kids are going to be, honestly,
made up that they've got glue guns.

Ancl they won't know that
this is a cheese safe

that we found here in this room,

in this area, actually.

And, you know, those little gems
remind us of the Baglionis.

And 'R's 'gust...

It's lovely, I don't ever want
to forget that history.

Ancl I guess, as we make
our history, as well,

you can only hope that someone,

be your future generations,
kind of, preserves that.

There is, though, still space
for Dick and Angel's favourite

piece of treasure -
at least in toy terms.

There you go.

You do know that this can't be
incorporated on to this, don't you?

inspired their latest acquisition,

but as far as Dick's concerned,

there's been an equine explosion.

what they what they played on.

there's just one more job to do.

And so, what was once a place
of detritus, dirt, and dust...

...is now a room filled with
light and possibility.

I think it's incredible.

The Baglionis' old games
and toys sitting side-by-side

with the Strawbridges'.

Everything's set up, and it doesn't
have to be put away and ripped up.

They can play chess over
a period of weeks.

They can play fives
over a period of time.

I think it's stunning.

For Dick and Angel,

the chateau's new games room is
where anything is possible

and the imagination can run free.

Each of the areas specifically
designed for its purpose -

whether crafting...

...competing...

...or just contemplating.

There's a place for everyone,

whatever their age.

I know that we want the kids
to go and explore the world.

But I want them to have
such beautiful memories here

that they actually always
want to come home.

Ancl they will. They will.
This is amazing.

In fact, let's start,
let's go get them.
