In the heart of
the French countryside,

a magnificent chateau has been
lovingly brought back to life

by an intrepid British couple.

Engineer Dick Straw bridge,

and his wife, designer Angel.

This is the magic.

Over the past eight years,

over 50 beautiful spaces have been
rebuilt, restored or reimagined.

The enormous leaking roof...

That's a bad sign.

Sunlight coming through
the holes is not good.

...now safe for another 100 years...

...the chateau's towering walls

almost restored to their former
glory.

Honestly,
I can't... It's exactly right.

Their hard work not only
helping create

a successful wedding
and events business...

People are smiling
and they're crying

and they're hugging
and they're drinking bubbly

and, you know what,
this house was meant to do that.

...but also an extraordinary family
home, bursting with love...

Now it's time for the final chapter
in this French fairy tale.,

one that is packed with new
adventures...

What happens in workshop stays in
the workshop.

It's summer at the chateau
and the school holidays have begun.

But for Dick, Angel, Arthur and
Dorothy, there are still jobs to do.

Right, what have we got?
Have we got everything we need?

Mind you don't bash anything.
Careful with the bashing.

We're going to put this down here.

Right. Don't drop them
in the moat, big boy.

The summer's drought and searing
temperatures have left

the water levels in the 8,000
square metre moat lower than ever,

and one area is particularly bad.

Right, look, there's our problem,

See, that's the last
bit of water we've got here,

and we have to find
a way of saving the fish,

because if it gets any drier,
they're going to end up dying, OK,

because there's not much oxygen
in there.

So what I want to do is
I want to make a way to join this

puddle with this moat.

There's a hole here somewhere
that goes underneath.

So what we have to do is
we have to clear it.

You're not suggesting that we
get in here, though?

Have you got another idea?

I'm going to give us water
in a hose,

that's going to allow us
to sort of act as a jet watch.

In we go with the pump!

Dick's plan is to use water
pumped from the other

side of the bridge to help
clear the hole,

but first he needs to see
exactly what the problem is.

Is that ladder big enough? I don't
know how deep the muck is.

If it keeps going down, we'll have
to go and get a bigger ladder.

But rescuing fish isn't
the only thing on Dick

and Angel's to-do list.

Inside the walled garden,
the recent transformation of

the Victorian folly has not
only meant

the family now has a new,
secluded space to relax in,

but it's also opened their eyes to

the enormous potential of
the area around it.

So, as Angel has some provisional
plans in mind,

Dick's already started clearing
the trees.

This is the north facing part of the
garden so it gets the least amount of sun,

which means fruits here are
six weeks slower than fruits

over in that bit because
the sun shines there all clay long.

Ancl this must have been for some
sort of a trellis.

Actually quite nicely clone.

That's very, very old.

Hello, PUPPY!

The folly may be
a little hideaway for the family,

but Dick and Angel would now like
to enhance the space around it

by creating a new outdoor
area for entertaining

and, as the walled garden is 2,000
square metres,

there's quite a bit of room
to play with.

a lot of years,

I'm not worried about that.

We've gone from a sitting area
to admire the garden,

that is now a kitchen. Yes.

to have some sort

in a similar stone to what we've got
outside the front of the chateau,

because I think having
the two of them ties in nicely, OK?

maybe it's a tiny little bit...

But I see the kitchen sort of
bit coming off the abutment so

the kitchen goes along that way
and it comes a little bit out here as well.

Ancl then this becomes a pergola,

I was thinking a bit of
a patio out the front. OK...

So this is the pergola.

Dick, believe it or not,
it's not as big as you think.

Before any building work can
be done, though,

Dick needs to work out what
goes where.

So the cunning plan is we're
going to have here

a cuisine d'ete, a summer kitchen.

Ancl this is going to be slated

because we've got enough slate left
over from the folly,

and that was the slate we had left
over from the orangery.

Ancl so if we make this
the right size,

we have enough slate
to make that nice.

So, as well as having
the shaded area,

we want somewhere to sit

and basically enjoy
the bright summer.

So the idea is we're going to put in
here...

It's going to be like a pergola with
a see-through roof on the top of it.

That allows us somewhere to have
a table and chairs,

and just be nice, and means you can
have a barbie in the rain,

which means that opens up spring
and autumn as well.

So this whole area is changing.

It's going to be a kitchen for
the summer,

it's going to be a seated out place
and all of it a great view,

because the chateau's over
here anyway.

Ancl I have a funny feeling that
from here,

actually, all of this area...

...it's going to take quite
a bit of work to make pretty.

With a plan in place,

the roof above the outside kitchen
is the first thing to do,

and that's Roofer Mate Steve's area
of expertise.

the top of the 150-year-old wall...

...a more recent memory's unearthed
at the bottom.

When we found the chateau,

that marker was for part of
the...

All of the big barn plus this
section of the walled garden,

a big lump of it was being sold off.

If we hadn't actually found
the chateau when we did,

within two or three weeks,
it would have been a closed deal,

meaning this part of the walled garden
would've been bought by somebody else,

which means we probably wouldn't
have bought the chateau. Yeah.

So that's... That's history, that
piece of yellow plastic.

Happy? Yeah. Next one?

But it's not just work in the walled
garden that's keeping Dick and Angel busy,

because, over the past couple of
months,

the wedding season has been
in full swing...

Hello, how are you?

...and Dick, Angel and their team
have been meeting,

greeting, feeding and entertaining

dozens of guests almost every
weekend. Service!

And though each Wedding's unique,

the one this week will stand out as
one of the most unusual.

Michael is Dutch,

and there's a lot of orange
because of that.

Ancl I think that's really lovely
because we haven't actually had

a wedding that has orange sort
of being

the predominant colour,
and I think it's really lovely.

As the 17th century leader
of Dutch independence came from

the French town of Orange,
the colour has been synonymous with

the country ever since.

And even though orange tulips aren't
currently in season,

Angel's still managed to fulfil

the British bride's homage
to her husband.

I went on a bit of a mission to try

and find orange tulips that didn't
look awful,

because I'm not
a massive fan of artificial flowers.

But these really do look
absolutely fab,

and we've got tulips in the summer
which is quite... Quite bonkers.

And once Angel's mixed them in
with fresh roses

and scarlet ribbon,
dried proteas and eucalyptus,

the bridal bouquets burst
with colour.

But giving a couple their dream
wedding

is exactly what Angel loves best.

Being part of someone's, you know,

most happiest clay of their life,

I mean, how could anyone not love
being part of that?

As well as weddings and big events,

coordinating large deliveries is
another balancing act

that Dick and Angel have learnt to
perform.

And the latest one involves over 24
tonnes of paving stone for

the walled garden's new outdoor
kitchen and dining area.

Jean Bertand's back on the job.

We've got an articulated lorry full
of stone again.

We took a full one for
the front of the chateau,

and unbelievably it's
the same quantity again

for the garden.

Angela's making her decisions, and
the idea of having the continuity

of the stone in front of
the chateau, the stone here,

yeah. It's just we're trying

to make sure it all sort
of joins together.

Ancl I'm looking at this and thinking
it's wonderful with the forklift,

but when we start having to hump
and dump this...

...we need to find some younger
people.

A new cuisine d'ete -
an outdoor kitchen and dining area -

is being built in
the chateau's walled garden,

and Dick and Render Rob are
currently trying to work out

how to turn solid stone into
a convenient cooking space.

We have to put up abutment
to actually hold this up,

because it's bowing this way
a little bit.

So I'm combining the two together

so we can have our barbecue in
the abutment.

It's abutment barbecue. Right.

From the French abouter,
meaning to join or abut,

the new abutment not only needs
to support a solid stone wall,

but also enclose a barbecue
and chimney.

If we go through there.
Yeah. Roughly there.

There's a nice big stone there.
Yeah.

If you go through underneath
that stone

and use that as a bit of a lintel...
Yep.

"All year round cooking.
Yep.

That's it, isn't it? Yeah. It's as
simple as that. Yeah.

The design of the outdoor kitchen
may be sorted,

but inside Dick has another cooking
conundrum to solve,

because for the next wedding,

orange tulips aren't
the only special request.

What nationality is our
next wedding?

They wear orange.

We're so clever in our kitchen!

So, because they come from Holland,

they want to have bitterballen.

What's bitterballen?

It's basically beef that's
going to be made into a ball,

it's then going to be deep-fried
with breadcrumbs

and made to be crunchy. So the beef
has to taste good, OK? OK!

Extra virgin olive oil.

Are we adding garlic into it?

Yeah, don't you think?

The thing is, we are in France.

So it may be a Dutch dish,

but it's our taking on

Put these on a pile on

which means when we toss them in

a pan they're always going to get

whereas if you've clone
lots of slices,

they all sit on top of each other
and not get cooked or coloured.

Over in the walled garden,

it's time for the stone slabs

to be laid across all 70 square
metres of

the new outdoor area,

so reinforcements have been
called in.

And though it'll only be
for family and friends to use,

Angel would still like it
to look beautiful

and complement both
the terrace at the front of

the chateau as well as
the patterned folly floor.

First, though, she needs
to work out what goes where.

There's so much activity here at
the moment

because we have
a wedding this weekend,

and I've got to be there with
the kids

and here making lots of decisions,

because we've planned this
but, like everything,

we've planned-ish it.

Ancl you can put a plan in place,

and when it's there it
always changes.

This is where we're going to be
having everyone sit down and to eat.

So, we planned to have, like,
a rug type,

sort of Victorian flooring in
the middle

but now we're just trying
to work out what

the border's going to be.

And you know what, when you're
fired,

it's that little bit harder
to make a decision.

Unfortunately for Angel,

Matt the Master Pave: needs
to know now.

A wider gold border means that
we can create more of

a, like, random pattern.
Yeah.

As the border affects
the size of the patterned area,

what Angel decides today will
literally be set in stone.

I think that this might be
the right answer

because this does feel right.

So, we'll go for the wider border?

But as well as building work,

there's a wedding to prepare for,
and it's time for Dick and Arthur

and the stone paving being laid.

a lot with Matt

about the best way we could do it
and so what we're doing is

we're putting in a product
that when it goes in

the gap between them,
it goes very hard, OK.

When I say it goes very hard,
it's...

It'll stop everything moving.

The other interesting thing,
of course, when it goes over,

it goes over quite quickly
and so it could -

there's a moment where it starts
to firm up, starts to firm up,

then you have to scrub it off before
it actually damages it,

and that's...
What could possibly go wrong?!

We're looking for a texture similar

the grey surface coat sprayed off.

and that is tinker with a tandem -

turning it from an average bicycle
into a set of wedding wheels.

I don't think we've ever decorated
a bike for a wedding.

Oh, for a wedding, no,
definitely not.

It's quite lovely, isn't it?

Over ten different types of tomatoes
are grown here

and at the moment, there's a
veritable glut in the greenhouse,

which Angel's mum is rather keen
to get her hands on.

What we are looking for, ideally,
is tomatoes that are ripe,

possibly a little bit too ripe,

because grandma has got a recipe
for tomato jam.

For the first time in months,
it's properly raining.

And as well as the fish,
the Irish contingent at the chateau,

Dick and his Kerry Blue puppy
Petale, are loving it.

Piddling down.

We had so little rain this year,
it's actually lovely,

isn't it, dog?

Petale likes to come in this room
because the cats go up the stairs

and live up in the hayloft upstairs.

So, she likes to come along,
have a little sniff.

Petale may be after cats,
but Dick's after off-cuts.

Right, we never throw anything away.

When we finished doing
the children's room last year,

I had some oak left

for Arthur and Dorothy's
mezzanine beds.

That'll do.

It's heavy enough.

Come on, dog.

In the walled garden, most of the
walls used to be covered

in wooden battens,
held up with iron hooks.

But what once supported vines or
fruit trees,

will now be used to hold pots
and pans.

Or at least that's the plan.

That's a bit of the original
batten that was there.

Ancl I'm going to bring it up to
the 21st century

from the 19th century.

Yeah...

So, we're already making up bits
of my kitchen, this is.

Ancl it's loose. Ah-ha!

This was made by a blacksmith when
the chateau was being built.

Following the footsteps of a
gardener 150 years ago.

Good.

But it's not just the 19th century
metalwork getting

a new lease of life.

The pieces of granite that
were lying around,

that are now turned in to the
support for the surface in

the kitchen, have got little notches
in them.

So, I just thought what I'm going to
do is I'm just going to

notch out a piece of oak
and set it in there.

It'll just give me a little shelf
to tuck things away.

When I cut that out,
it should fit in that hole.

HE CHUCKLES

But... Ancl if it doesn't,
we won't tell anyone!

With free off-cuts,
hooks and supports,

the only cost for Dick's new shelves
is a bit of elbow grease.

Looks like we did it on purpose.

It makes you happy to be Irish.

Up in the north of Ireland
we know how to rain.

Sometimes it's nice just
to have peace,

to diddle with stuff
and get it clone.

That's quite heavy! It's oak,
oak is heavier, actually.

The beauty about building
in oak in stone, it'll last.

Sheltering from the rain in Dick's
workshop is Angel...

...who's also making a wall hanging
for the eating area,

though in a more decorative
kind of way.

I know that this space is
going to be used

for lots of family things in
the future.

It's with family and friends
and special occasions,

it's going to start building
memories.

Ancl I thought to myself,
wouldn't it be nice

to have sort of something in the
centre of the wall

that we could then kind of
personalise?

So, for instance, if it's one of
the kid's birthdays,

we can put lots of pictures up of
the kids when they were younger and,

you know, it's just going to be an
area that draws your eye.

Like Dick, Angel's keen to re-use
and recycle whenever she can.

And when you own a 350 square metre
bamboo forest,

the choice of offcuts is obvious.

Now, I'm loving the bamboo.

But I think whilst it is beautiful
and natural and every one

is different and unique, I'm trying
to create some uniformity.

So, you know, I've got my...my size,

which is the 800 and I've
checked this and it,

it looks nice.

Ancl I'm just going to go across
the wall like this.

I may paint it black,

I may spray paint it at the end,
but one step at a time.

First, though Angel needs to cut all
the bamboo to the same length.

Lovely.

And then work out how
to hold them all together.

Dick suggested put a dowel all
the way through,

which I thought was genius,
but obviously creates another job

because we need lots of holes.

Lovely. Erm...

Obviously need one on the
other end.

This type of job, if you have
a jig, is quite satisfying.

And after a bit ofjiggery pokery
with a jig...

...it's time to poke.

You get the picture.

Outside though,

And once Petale's given her seal

Dick plants the jasmine and clematis
that he's hoping one day

will cover the pergola for
years to come.

Angel, though, is already having
a bit of a wobble

with her water feature.

It's really, really grubby.

I've just put the gravel in and
obviously the gravel's got sand in.

Because obviously I want
clear water...

These beautiful pebbles are
completely filthy.

Because they're gravel
for making concrete.

I didn't buy pond pretties.

But as soon as some fresh
water turns the pebbles

from grubby to gorgeous...

These are all water plants,
they're essentially

like what we put in the moat.

I like the idea of them being
a little bit like bonsais,

you know, like essentially
plants are just mini

and you trim them back.

So they give you that kind
of effect.

it gives you that feeling

that you've got a rug down outside.

I'm really chuffed with that because
I feel like it defines this, so...

Finally, it's time for the
finishing touches...

...and for Angel to turn the blank
bamboo canvas into

a decorative display that can
change with the seasons.

A little bit of wire,

basically will keep anything
up here.

It's quite fun because the little
gaps make it very easy

to thread things through,

which means that I don't have
to do any more to the outside.

I'm quite pleased with it
because, you know, looking back,

it's a black bamboo sort of
picture frame,

a huge picture frame.

But it's more than that,
cos it's our bamboo

and it's a fact that over the
summer next year,

the kids are going to find little
things in the garden.

All sorts of memories that we
can put on there.

It feels like the centre brings
all of this together.

These outside sofas are fab but they
do need a little bit jazzing up

and you need your throws
and your cushions.

Ancl that's the bit that
I think takes, like,

a little outside area and takes
it to a different level.

Because you're taking that little
bit of softness

from the house inside and you're
putting it outside.

Ancl I think that is what makes
it feel special.

Lovely.

Let's face it, the kids are going to
sit on it and mess it up in a minute

but for the moment,
it looks great.

And as the family's planning
to use this area all year round,

Angel's paying as much attention
to its aesthetics

as every other room she's designed.

If there was ever a moment
to put out macrame lanterns,

it would be now.

And what was once a rather
inconspicuous area of the garden,

now has a folly providing peace
and quiet.

Adjoining an outdoor kitchen
and dining area

that can be used all year-round.

But much more importantly,

Dick and Angel have created
a place of tranquillity

and calm for their family
and friends to relax in.

And once everything's in
its place, it's, as always,

down to the details.

It's just the sound of running
water, it is very therapeutic.

Ancl this couldn't really
be more simple.

The outdoor kitchen might have
year-round use...

...but as it's Dick's domain,

the Angel touch may be
a step too far.
