In the heart of
the French countryside,

a magnificent chateau has been
lovingly brought back to life

This is the magic.

Over the past eight years,

over 50 beautiful spaces have been
rebuilt, restored or reimagined.

The enormous leaking roof...

That's a bad sign.

The sunlight coming through
the holes is not good.

...now safe for another 100 years.

The chateau's towering walls...

...almost restored
to their former glory.

Honestly, I can't... You're happy,
that's good. It's exactly right.

Their hard work not
only helping create

a successful wedding
and events business...

People are smiling
and they're crying

and they're hugging
and they're drinking bubbly

and do you know what?
This house was meant to do that.

...but also
an extraordinary family home,

bursting with love...

in this French fairy-tale.

The Chateau de la Motte Husson
is surrounded by 12 acres of land.

But whatever the time of year,
the 2,000 square metre walled garden

always holds a special place
in Dick and Angel's heart.

And as they're hoping that
Arthur and Dorothy

will love it as much as they do...

SHE SINGS CHEERILY

...they've come out to plant the
children's choice of cherry tree.

OK. Now this one which you two chose
is going in this hole. OK.

Oh, that's good.
What we're going to do is

we're going to fill this hole in
with this compost. Yes.

Scrape the compost in around
the pot, please, and pack it in.

Away you go. Come on, more!

Put your feet in. Who's got wellies?
Stamp it all in around the pot.

..and this is quite important,

you plant wet, sow dry.
Do you remember that, Arthur? Yeah.

That hole is the right size
for that.

So, you're going to
very gently set that in,

because what could possibly
go wrong?

That surprised me as well.

It does look phenomenal.

In 2014 when Dick and Angel
first explored the walled garden,

only a few traces of the hard work
done 150 years ago

were still visible.

You see all the wires
going up the side?

That's where there's been plants in
the past growing against the walls.

There's years and years of work to
turn it into something phenomenal.

Eight years on,

Dick and Angel have
not only managed to tame it

but have also ensured that,
once again, it's flourishing.

We've got a crop rotation.

I think we're going to be more
productive this year than normal.

But on the north-facing wall
of the garden,

there's something rather special
that they'd now like to tackle -

the original 19th-century folly.

That is not a bush.

Ha-ha! I know.

It's so overgrown
that we've forgotten

that there's this beautiful tower
underneath.

It may only be nine square metres,
but in the past it has received

an inordinate amount of
love and attention.

Somebody went to the bother
of putting the granite in there,

putting the stone
and the brickwork in... Gosh.

...making it a lovely folly
or summerhouse.

This was built as
a high-status statement.

I've never, ever thought of it
like that, honestly.

Follies or "fabriques de jardin"
as they're known in France,

were simply designed to delight.

Their function - just to be fun.

An idea that Angel's
rather keen to run with.

It's bloody amazing.

THEY LAUGH

Since you said to me
that this is kind of like

a high-status tower,

my brain is just spinning around.

So, can we kind of agree
in principle

that this is recreational
as opposed to functional? Please?

We can't agree that yet because we
don't know what's going to happen.

OK, yeah, you have a...
you do have a point

but just so you know
where my brain has kind of...

sort of going out to,
in trillions of places,

I can see somewhere where
there is kind of like

a social...um, a social cooking
facility for the adults... Ah...no!

...there's a ladder upstairs,
you know, the kids could,

there could even be kind of like
a little ladder that goes out

into the bamboo.

A little slide coming down.
Steady. Slow, slow, slow.

Let's just see what
the building looks like

and start coming with what
we're going to do with it. OK.

But just give me
a glimmer of a hope.

You see, we've had a little...

We could actually put pots up there,
keep all the pots in there. Yep.

You've got a potting shed
and all your outbuildings.

Yeah, but you can never have
too many potting sheds.

You can never have too many places
to have a G&T!

Although Dick and Angel are only at
the start of transforming the folly,

another job - Herculean
in its scale - is coming to an end.

Almost a year ago, the crumbling
brown 19th-century render

on the front face of the chateau
began to be chipped off...

...and a new creamier-coloured
21st-century version put back on.

Then, two months later, work
began on the sides of the chateau

finishing in the spring
of this year.

Now, at the back,
an historical event,

at least as far as the chateau's
concerned, is about to take place.

It's incredible.

Render Rob and roofer mate Steve

have reached
the final section of wall

meaning almost 1,000 square metres
have now been given a new coat

that not only looks good

but will protect the chateau
for years to come.

Good, isn't it? I'm just...glad
there's no more dust.

I know, I do feel quite
emotional actually because

that's a really big job clone, babes.

All roof, all render,
chateau looking brilliant.

Yep. You know how much
we appreciate it, don't you?

Arthur and Dorothy appreciate it

and they don't even know they
appreciate it, yeah? So, well clone.

Ancl can we just confirm this is
the colour we're going for?!

With the roof and rendering
now done,

the two biggest jobs
at the chateau have

- to Dick and Angel's enormous
relief - been ticked off.

The to-do list, though,
continues just around the corner...

...because the scaffolding
will now be used

for the renovation of the folly.

First, though, Dick has
a bit of jungle warfare to do

in the bamboo forest behind it.

I've got a lot of bamboo.

I need basically a passageway
between the bamboo and the wall

we can drive up
and all the way around the tower.

HE CHUCKLES

There's absolutely
no way through here.

Bamboo was introduced to Europe
in 1827

and, like the folly, soon became
a feature of fashionable gardens.

But what was once
a 19th-century decorative detail

has now grown into a 350 square
metre 21st-century forest.

If I said to Angela, I feel like
David Bellamy coming through here,

she wouldn't know
who I was talking about.

But here we go,
we're fighting our way through.

Soon Dick's efforts not only allow
the scaffolding to be put up

but also let him and Angel

reach the enormous amount of ivy
sitting on top.

Woo. It feels quite high up here.

Look! Look, look, look at the top.

Oh, my gosh!
There's something poking out.

Gloves on.

Phew. She's going in.

I want to see the point,
and see what state we're in.

Oh, wow.
It's looking quite magic although.

As ivy can climb up
to three metres a year,

Dick, Angel, Steve and Rob
are going to have to dig deep.

I've actually forgotten
that we're up high.

The state of the roof itself
is unknown

but as Dick and Angel
excavate further,

it soon becomes clear that
150 years ago

it had been beautifully slated.

This is wonderful.
They're all falling off.

I'm sorry, I'm saving them.

As more of the folly's revealed...

though,

are sure there's a bit more
chateau history to uncover.

There is more to it.

In the chateau's walled garden,

the 150-year-old folly is
receiving some serious attention.

See, I'm sure there was

much more wood on it
last time I left you there.

Yeah. Yeah?

Hold on. You have...

HE CHUCKLES

...you've stripped it away
completely, haven't you?

Roofer mate Steve, though, has
not only removed all the old slates

and the rotten timber,

but has also discovered
some 19th-century recycling

by the original builders.

They have used what they found.

You can see like where
they've cut these away

and that one hasn't been cut away
when that one has.

So, where they've got bigger,
thicker timbers

and they've just made them work.

But the guy who built this has
built the chateau roof, hasn't he,

and his church roofs
and things like that,

so, this is just what he does,
they just know what they're doing.

It's interesting. We've got
150 years in some of the oak

and we're expecting to get
150 years from our new oak.

That means we're expecting
300 years from the old oak.

It will do, because as long
as it stays dry, which it will do,

because you'll have
a new roof on it.

You've got to love it, haven't you?
Yeah. This is going to be,

when it's put back together,
it's going to be stunning.

The folly, though, isn't
the only unusually-shaped structure

being zhushed up.

Overlooking the moat since 2017,

the two geodesic domes
and their surroundings

offer Dick and Angel's guests
a rather luxurious getaway.

But after a two-year hiatus,
Angel and her team

are now having to put
the glamour back into glamping.

So, with guests on their way,
Angel gets to work inside

while chateau helper Quentin
and builder mate Steve

ensure the exteriors
are up to scratch.

You know when the macrame comes out,

this room is nearly clone.

Ancl actually,
it's been a lot of work

kind of getting this guest-ready

as opposed to, you know,
the kids hanging out on the chairs

or us as a family
going in the hot tub.

But actually, it's nice
to have guests coming back.

Good. We are nearly clone.

In France, though,
camping wouldn't be complete

without fresh baguettes
and tasty patisseries.

And as soon as
the kitchen's stocked up...

It's been a long time coming

putting those baguettes
in that baguette box

and I have actually
really missed it.

...and the guests greeted...

...the chateau's glamping sites
are once again declared open.

Welcome, welcome.
Lovely to meet you.

But with a summer season packed
with weddings and glamping guests,

fun over functionality
has prevailed

and Dick and Angel are
now keen to create a space

just for the family.

So, in the walled garden,

it's time to turn the folly
from rustic to romantic...

...by creating
a magical mezzanine upstairs

for the children to chill in,

a relaxing retreat for
Dick and Angel downstairs

and possibly even a secret door
to the forest outside.

Right, we have some questions
that need executive decisions.

ANGEL CHUCKLES

Is that right? That's right. What
do you want to talk about first -

the hole, the door,
the mezzanine?

Well, let's start... Right...

Where we are at the minute,
all right,

remember you said you
wanted to have a door here.

That's quite, quite fun, isn't it?

I know, it's quite fun
and...mysterious.

That's a really small door,

It's good. I have no problems
with that at all. No, it's easy.

Whenever you go to old properties

and they've got these odd,
random, little doors,

you always think,
what on Earth is that?

Ancl you want to go and explore.

So, I think that's
exactly right here.

Just so it becomes a secret door.

Going back to the mezzanine level...

I don't want to lose the fact
that when you're down here,

how magnificent that looks.

Can I just make a suggestion?

It's almost like, it's like
a little secret. Oh, yeah.

This is feeling really exciting
actually now.

So, while roofer mate Steve
creates a door downstairs...

...Angel has had an idea
for the very top of the folly.

A new weather vane
to mark its renovation.

This is what we found.

No way. Yeah.

And her father, formerjeweller
Papi Steve, is happy to help.

How old is that?
Oh, it must be, oh, 150 years old.

OK. This will last as long.
Yeah. Good.

As the original weather vane
is incomplete,

Papi is not only creating a new one
but also giving it some personality

in the shape of
a rather familiar family.

This is going to be
my sort of template...

Perfect. ..for piercing out
on to the copper.

And I think that is going
to look really lovely.

I, I, I agree. I really do.

Papi's weather vane might depict
the present owners of the chateau,

but Angel would also like
to connect it to its past.

Do you think we could
at least take this shape?

Could you rivet that on as well?

I think that would be
really beautiful, so...

I like that. Right. Yeah. That
all works together, really. Great.

For me,
this is the sort of the easy part

because now I'm leaving
the hard part for you.

Dick's been growing rhubarb...

It is glorious.

...and is rather keen to show his
new-found forcing skills to Angel.

I'm really quite looking forward
to see

how much is actually in there now.

Forced rhubarb is grown
in warm, dark conditions

and as well as being able
to grow out of season,

has a much sweeter taste
than garden-grown.

Look how pink that is.

The colour is absolutely gorgeous,
isn't it?

There you are, there's your first
little bit to try. Are you ready?

It's rhubarby,
but it's not as tart.

Mm. That's quite impressive.

Right. We're going to
harvest some now.

Okeydokey.
Right, should I just start pulling?

You pass them to me
and I'll top and tail them.

DICK CH UCKLES

She's not quite a country girl yet.
Nearly.

Nearly? I'm a hybrid.

It's huge.

Impressed by how much rhubarb
he's grown,

Dick's thoughts promptly turn
to liqueur.

Right, that's probably
my first jar full. So here we go.

And for this particular
batch of bottles,

Dick's counting on cardamon.

Fill it up.

Cardamon rhubarb's something I get
quite excited about for a liqueur.

So, if I get my cardamon...

Always give it a little shake.

If you shake your thing
before you open it always...

Hey, hey, hey! ..it releases
even more of the flavours.

Put about a third of those
in now.

More rhubarb.

This is so, so simple.

Another third.

In goes more rhubarb.

HE WHISTLES JAUNTILY

Final third of the cardamoms
popped in.

Rhubarb to the top.

And to help it turn into
a sweet liqueur, some sugar -

four tablespoons' worth.

So, it's all tumbling down
quite nicely, isn't it?

Now fill it up with rhubarb,

Time for the alcohol.

Dick's using pure alcohol designed
for home-made liqueurs like this,

but vodka works just as well.

That's about half-a-litre.

Just put the lid on here.

Turn it upside down.

Ba-boom.

See, let the sugar come through.

Back upside down again.

All Dick needs to do now is
let it steep for a few weeks.

That's it.

Mind the nettles.

Nothing like going scaffolding
in sensible shoes.

In the walled garden, roofer mate
Steve has had a tiptop idea

for the very top of the folly.

Tell us your cunning plan.

OK, well, we needed to get
a window in, didn't we?

So...| don't know if you've
ever heard of an eyelid. No.

An eyelid window, it sort of...
No. ..swoops in up,

and then sweeps away.
Like an eyelid. Yeah.

I can picture it on a thatched roof

because that's the sort
of shape they're doing, yeah.

I've never pictured it
in slate before.

This would be slated
and then the eyelid

- if you can hold that, Dick,
because we need to pull that out -

so, the eyelid will be
somewhere there like that. Whoa.

So... And then...
OK. The next one will be...

...that would run
into the roof above.

Anything that has a curve in it
just automatically has

a beauty and an elegance to it.
So, honestly when you...

you just bent the batten
and...| was happy.

There is a significant amount
more work in this

than just putting a little flat roof
in, or putting a little dormer in.

But for the next 150 years, people
will just see how beautiful that is

because we have added
to the beauty of the place.

I don't know,
it feels quite um...indulgent,

but exactly right
because it's going to change this

to something really, really special.

The answer's no!

ANGEL GIGGLES

It's early summer

and the chateau's walled garden
is blooming.

And on the far side,
the 19th-century folly,

now not only has
a new 21st-century slate roof

but even an eyelid-shaped window.

So, as roofer mate Steve has now
finished his work on the exterior,

it's Angel's turn to step in
and transform the folly's interior

from interesting to incredible.

I want it to look beautiful
because this room is rustic.

But upstairs, upstairs has just
got to be for the kids, you know,

it's their den space.

It's not big but it has got
a really high ceiling.

Ancl I can't help it,

high ceiling makes me want
to have a swing, you know.

But the folly's more than
just a playroom

because now it acts as a bridge

between the cultivated walled garden
out front

and the wild bamboo forest behind.

You look out this direction
and you've got all your flowers.

But out here, we've got deer
and we've got wild boar.

So, it does feel like
it's flora and fauna,

and I think that I can incorporate
that in whatever we do

because a den, a den needs
to feel cosy, doesn't it?

So we need some cosiness upstairs,
right?

The children's den
may be cosy and fun

but downstairs, Angel's looking for
a much more mature mood.

The pointing of this,
it has really, really

made this room feel quite lovely.

It's still rustic,
but it's absolutely gorgeous.

What I'd quite like, though, because
I feel like it is so important,

erm, I'd quite like
a nice detail on the floor,

and I just keep going back to having
sort of like squared, chequered,

Victorian, erm, I don't know why,
it just keeps coming to me.

But as you come in here,

you know, having

a beautiful floor
and that detail is,

I think,
going to change this room

and take it to quite
a decadent place.

Where would you have your chairs?
Mm?

Maybe it's two chairs there,
Do we need two?

Chairs question mark.

We don't need to cram everything
in here.

Ancl that's nice because,
because it is a small area.

Put too much in here, we'll lose,

kind of lose the feel of the place.

But you can never have too
many swings.

Angel may have romantic visions of
the bamboo forest,

but Dick is waging war on it,

and at the moment,
the bamboo's winning.

This isn't as easy as
I hoped it would be.

Right.

These bamboos are well
and truly rooted in.

There's. There's no.
There's no movement in that at all.

Look at that. That's rock-solid.

That's why I have to clear this.

To stop these spreading
and spreading

because the strength of those roots
will push into the wall.

Good chance they'll make
the wall bend.

Not into that.

Right, I'm
going to keep digging along here.

In Papi's workshop, though,

the atmosphere is one of peace
and precision.

Right, there's all the little holes
drilled for these pieces

and they've all got
to be cut out now.

The new folly weather vane will be
made out of copper

and that means Papi has
to very carefully saw around

the silhouette of the Strawbridges.

Going to be quite
a nice little moment here,

as this piece drops out,

you have to see a bit more of

the shape.
Which will be really nice.

You can actually see what it is now,
can't you?

That is quite satisfying that.

Right, let's see if we can start
to bring Arthur into play.

From top to toe,

the folly's slowly being brought
back to life.

And it's now time for Angel

and builder mate Steve
to talk tiling.

I found the perfect tile.

It's like this
black-and-white checker.

I just thought it was exactly right

and Dick said to me,
"We can't have that,

"it's not an outside tile."

So, I found this range.

Oh, hello,
Petal... Petal loves it, thank you.

And as Angel likes to make
a grand entrance,

their positioning needs
to be perfect.

Which isn't easy when every
angle isn't.

I'd like the points
to start symmetrically.

From the centre. From the centre of
the door. Right.

This is going,
obviously measure it up.

That's going to go here.

There's nothing symmetrical or
straight in these rooms. No.

Do you want to lay a centre line
for me?

Yeah, I'll do that.

Yeah, all right. Thanks Steve.

While builder mate Steve tackles
the tiles...

...Angel goes for the soft touch.

So, the folly is split into two.

We've got our downstairs,
which is lovely and fun.

But of course there's somewhere
upstairs for the children that's

gonna be fun, it needs to be cosy.

Things to sit on.
I don't really want chairs.

I just want everything to be soft,

so beanbags seem like
the total obvious thing.

This beanbag pattern is
the easiest one in the world.

The most difficult thing really is
choosing your fabric.

And when you've chosen it,

first fold it in half,
and then cut it to shape.

That is, that's my pattern.

So...

...my zip about...

...here and here.

As bean bags are notoriously baggy,

a couple of notches in

the corner will later help line up
the bottom seam.

OK. One more nip.
This is the important nip.

The simple but clever bit...
right.

And then it's just

a matter of sewing up
the seam with the zip.

I'm giving myself a lovely big seam

because we're going to do
a zigzag on

the edge of it after.

I've no doubt that I'll sit on it at
some point.

Ancl I don't want to I don't
want to rely on just a single seam.

So, this is why we get
the notch in there

so you can match up centre front
to the back.

Ancl now I'm going to sew.

I'm going to sew crossways here.

Ancl I've got the shape of

my beanbag.
I love little things like that.

Finally,
pull the patterned side out

and the job's done. Or nearly.

OK. Now, before I...

Before I do the extra reinforcements

and the zip...

...check, make sure it all fits.

If you make a liner...

If the kids are
a little bit grubby one clay

and they sit on it,
it don't matter

because you can take it out
and wash it.

Right.

Do you know what, this is actually

a big comfy cushion, isn't it,
with a little bit of shape?

Ancl you know I've got
the flora, I've got the fauna,

and I think they complement
each other.

I love Dorothy's choice of butterfly
and this is quite,

quite fun - I'm chuffed.

Making Arthur and Dorothy

comfortable up in their den is
one thing.

Ensuring they don't fall rapidly
back down to Earth, quite another.

And as soon as he's back in
his workshop,

Dick starts work on
a bespoke banister.

If they're falling asleep
and they roll over the edge

and fall down the stairs,
it'll be Daddy's fault.

So here we go. 1,000mm...

And, once Dick's calculated
the capability of a child

to either fall down,
trip up, or get stuck...

I think they'll struggle
to get their head through that.

...he sets to work making
a bespoke childproof banister.

One, two, three, four,
five. That works for me.

This is now my template
for every one.

Use the same one
for every time you cut,

cos that way, you don't get slightly
creeping increase.

In Angel's wedding workshop,

the only flowers currently being
made for display are of

the printed kind.

I bought loads of sort
of vintage botanical flora

and fauna pictures.

They are printed onto kind of like

a waterproof canvas, which means
that if

I put them outside,
they won't get mouldy.

But as Angel is going to display
them

in the newly refurbished folly,

solving the problem

of damp air is one thing,
aesthetics quite another.

I was looking for picture frames
to put them in.

Ancl actually,

I thought, "I don't need
a picture frame."

A bit of wood at the top

and a bit of wood at
the bottom's alll need

and I think they look really good.

And once the oak off-cuts are ready
to go on...

Got my bottom piece.

...all that's needed is some sticky
tape on steroids.

Carpet tape is brilliant,

I've used it loads in
Dorothy's doll's house

because it's really,
really sticky.

You know,

I prefer it to a picture frame,
if I'm honest with you.

In the folly,

it's now Dick's job to turn
an unusually dinky door into

a secret portal.

Ha-ha. I know the image that
Angela has in her mind,

it's going through
the wardrobe of Narnia,

going into the next...

I can just see it in her mind, yeah?
Um...

just put a little bookcase over
there, to cover it.

So, it looks like you can't see
the door.

That's not easy.

So, a 50 will fit inside it.

OK - the height.

Has to be 1.30 with a 1.22.

If I put this along here like this,

this wall here doesn't line up

with that wall.

40 - what could possibly go wrong?

Back in the workshop,
Dick's hoping his mismatched

measurements actually match up.

You can tell this is going to be a
bookcase, can't you?

But actually,
we don't want a bookcase.

We want something that is
a secret portal to

the next part of the world. Right,
to make it that, I've got

a little trolly thing just
chopped up.

Ancl with a bit of luck,
if I screw this on to here...

That's one.

So this is a bookcase

that can move
in and out of a secret doorway!

The 19th-century folly may now have
a 21st-century roof,

window and weather vane.

But it's not just

the outside that's a mix of old
and new.

Some of the snuggly blankets,
please. Oh, and the telescope.

Look, things are rehoming
themselves.

Perfect. See this is the thing,

as the kids grow older, we put
things in the attic,

but then they can have different
uses so...

that one can go upstairs as well.

For decades, the chateau's folly
stood forgotten,

but now its full majesty has once
again been revealed.

And even completed with

a copper crown,
provided by Papi Steve.

Knowing that the weather vane is
up there

and that my clad made it,
and all four of us are on it,

is just the cherry on the cake,
isn't it?

Ancl the eyelet,

it just looks out over
the garden and the house

and I just think it's
a very special place up here.

And as the main function of
the folly's just to be fun,

Angel's ensured

the inside lives up
to expectations.

I can't wait for the kids
to see this.

I will be really happy for
the kids to just be up here

and just to play.

Cushions, twinkly lights,

I mean, it's

going to be somewhere quite magical
for the kids.

It's also Dick's nightmare.

Ancl that is why downstairs is very,
very different.

So, with great restraint...

One cushion, each chair.

I'm being very, very, very good.

...Angel makes her finishing touches
to the folly.

Though her idea

of minimalism is, shall we say,
rather small.

I mean, I know I said no twinklies

but this is kind
of actually no twinklies.

And so,
what was once damp and derelict,

is now repaired and restored.

Its floor not only level,

but also looking good.

And the 19th-century whimsy
now filled

with 21st-century comfort
and colour,

as well as a bit of magic.

There you go,
one door-hiding bookcase.

Ha-ha.
