That's what it feels like,
isn't it?

It's winter

and the chateau has now been closed
to wedding guests

for over two years.

I've found some satisfying crunches.

But in just a few months' time,

that's all about to change.

This is lovely but I'm afraid,
babes, this is a big year for us.

This is the year of the celebration.

We haven't got time to
be doing this stuff.

We have to put our focus
back on the house again.

It's interesting
cos if you look across,

you can still see what
has to be clone.

That will be clone
before the first wedding.

Everything else that we have
to do as well. Well, that's it.

This spring and summer,

Dick and Angel
will be hosting 12 weddings.

But after a such a long break,

they are a bit out of practice.

It nearly feels like
when we first started weddings.

But you see, we're worried about
getting the chateau functioning

and Petal's worried there might be
a little mouse or something

on our land!

We've got to remember
our priorities.

but this is the calm before
the storm, you realise that?

But before any
wedding guests arrive,

there's a lot still to do
around the chateau.

Like finishing re-rendering
its 25-metre-high walls.

Over 250 square metres of crumbling

150-year-old render

has already been removed.

And a new 21st-century coat
put back on to the front facade.

There are, though,
another 750 square metres to go

before all four walls
will be finished.

But while render Rob and
roofer mate Steve

work on the outside of the chateau,

Dick and Angel have a job
to do in the basement.

In the room that was once

the chateau's rather substantial
cider and vinegar store.

I can't believe that you're
attacking this room.

Do you remember
when we first came in?

There was a barrel that was,
what, 8ft tall there. Yeah.

Had the cider in it,
or the vinegar or something.

The Chateau de la Motte Husson
was originally built

between 1868 and 1874
for the wealthy Baglioni family.

Come on. Come on. Come on.

And in October 2014,

when Dick and Angel first explored
the chateau...

This is not too shabby.

...they found down in the sous sol,
the basement...

Nice stairs, nice and wide. Yeah.

...a cool, dark, earth-floored room

containing empty cider
and vinegar barrels.

The latter regularly used
in the 19th century

to perk up both food
and fainting ladies.

It was very, very rustic
and it was very...

It's still very rustic, darling.

Since then, the room's been used
as Dick's workshop.

And then, since being moved out
of the preserves' cupboard,

as a temporary dumping ground
for Angel's wedding gear.

Now, Angel's decided it's time
to bring the room back to life

by transforming it into
a dedicated wedding workshop,

an Atelier de Mariage.

Do you see shelves and things

Because you're acting like

I'm asking for, like, a swimming
pool on the roof or something.

I feel that you're sort of attached
to this as your workroom still.

But the house has moved on.

You've got your own workroom now.

Time's ticking cos I'm assuming
you want it organised

before the first wedding. Exactly,
that's why... Of course you do.

But the new Atelier de Mariage

is not just going to be packed
with vintage china...

...but also
Angel's floral flourishes.

Because, over the years,

Angel has enjoyed creating

both delightful displays
around the chateau...

She wanted it rustic,
I think we're nearly there.

...and dozens of
beautiful bridal bouquets.

Each one as individual
as the bride herself.

So, now she has her very own
wedding room,

Angel's hoping to turn it into
a space that's not only practical

but incredibly creative.

So, I know that I definitely need
a central work reservation.

Ancl because I have to be
essentially practical here,

I'm going to be able to store these
racks of china underneath it.

I like the idea of nearly all of the
walls having stuff in attractive...

...like all my wicker baskets
and my buckets

and galvanised buckets

cos right now, everything is filed
in sort of plastic storage boxes.

For Angel, though,
it's the flowers that help

turn a wedding from ordinary
to extraordinary.

I love the idea of having, like,
a big flower chandelier

because I'll be able
to dry flowers on it,

but also I'll be able
to pick from it.

Ancl I quite like that idea.

So a flower chandelier.

Oh, yeah, yeah.

I need an inspiration wall.

And, when it comes to
finding something

on which to pin images and ideas,

all Angel needs to do

is visit the chateau's
very own reclamation yard,

otherwise known
as the outbuildings.

These will fill that place up again
cos they did before.

I don't want the...the
whole things in there. Oh.

I just want just the top
of a barrel

and it can be the inspiration wall.

OK, right I don't understand that
but that's OK,

I don't have to understand it
just yet.

The old vinegar barrel may ensure
there's a lovely reminder of

the chateau's history
in Angel's new room.

Turning it into a pin board

is a different matter altogether.

If we try and cut it,
it'll fall apart.

Even though this one's got
a band around it still?

With the top of a barrel now
destined to be a pin board,

Dick's keen to see
what else they can up cycle.

stuff. We have got the wine rack.

I've always loved that trellis.

This is taller than that room
by quite a long way, isn't it?

But I'm actually thinking of it
going across the room,

hanging as a flower chandelier,

where I can hang things from.

Lots of dried flowers.

At the front of the chateau
stand a pair of magnolia trees,

a birthday present
from Dick to Angel.

And now they're both in bloom,

an opportunity
for an unusual taste test.

Magnolia pickle.

You don't hear that every clay.

A friend of mine sent me
this recipe.

I was like, "I've got magnolia
trees!"

They're only tiny.

And to be honest,
they are at the end.

But this is good
because I've enjoyed the beauty

and now I'm going to pickle them.

Ancl we're going to have them
in a little bit of a sushi feast.

With a mild ginger taste,

petals from certain varieties
can be eaten, raw, pickled,

or even used as tea.

Taste that.

Nothing on it.

I was absolutely gobsmacked.

That's really odd.

But nice. Right.

Right, 50g of that,
pinch of salt.

And to turn the petals into pickle,

all Dick and Angel need to do

is simply dissolve some sugar
and salt in a warm, light vinegar.

Even that smells greasy.

It smells delicious.

Dorothy is now completely
into her sushi, isn't she?

Oh, you know, if you said to her,

"What would you have
on your birthday?"

She would say, "Sushi."

Mm-hm.

First, though, it needs to sit
and pickle for a couple of weeks.

Over in the Atelier de Marriage,

Dick and builder mate Steve
have been busy

levelling the uneven
19th-century earth floor

with some 21st-century concrete.

Three, two, one, yeah? Yeah.

This floor was rammed earth

because the rammed earth
is what you want,

keeps the temperature stable and
provides a little bit of humidity,

which means the corks don't rot
in your bottles.

So moisture in your cork,
that's why it was there.

And for us now 'R's a storage room,

which means we don't want any
moisture,

so it's a clamp proof course.

It's going to be the reinforced bar

so that the actual concrete can
expand a little bit without cracking

and then we'll tile
on the top of it.

And now it's dry,

it's time for
some design decisions...

What a difference this has made.

...which is most certainly
Angel's department.

OK, let's break this down.

The things I need in this room are

all the racks with glasses

and plates and
cutlery and everything. Yeah.

Ancl it's got to be a place

where I can just grab things,
you know?

Ancl I want this to be
completely 3D.

You know when we're doing flowers,

you know, you're using your body
all the time.

You go in to get the water,

you're picking things up,
you're doing this.

It's not sort of sitting down
and sort of sewing

and kind of going to get buttons.

This is a very dynamic space,

and because of that,
I want to be like this and that.

So I would like to see, what?

600. I need 120.

It's quite big, actually,

but that's why...

No, that's why it's important
to do it in situ, isn't it?

I just want to see where 180 is.

OK. Oh, that's perfect.

That is an absolute perfect size.

We've got to find a sink,
first of all.

There'll be one out
in the building somewhere.

very excited about this now.

I never used to.

The thing is, never a truer
word was spoken.

So, while builder mate Steve
starts to lay the groundwork...

...it's Angel's job to give the room
some va-va-voom,

and to do that,

she's going to cover her workbench
with the same light blue tiles,

but this time
decoupage them with paper napkins.

When you take all the plies off,

you get this lovely, thin
sort of material to work with.

Ancl that's great cos it can feel
really integrated

with what you put it on.

It's also a nightmare,
because normally,

the way that I've always
clone decoupage is

I get 50% PVA, 50% water,

put it on whatever I'm decoupaging,

get my credit card
and then get all the bubbles out.

Can't do it on this

because it's actually so thin
it just rips.

So I'm doing it a different way

and I'm quite excited by this.

Small things, but small things
can make a really big difference.

So last night I PVA'd this,
no water,

just plain PVA
straight on the tile

and I've got my napkin.

Ancl the idea,

and the dream,

is that...

...when this is ironed on,

it's going to be completely,
perfectly flat

with no bubbles.

Need bit parchment paper.

I'm just going to iron away.

Ancl what's going to happen
is the PVA,

it's going to start melting

and it's going to infuse the napkin.

Ancl it's going to be bubble-free.

And, fingers crossed,
pretty perfect.

Now, it's not...
It's not a quick job.

Because you've got to take the time,
allow the glue to melt.

You can't get flatter than that,
can you?

You really can't.

That's quite exciting.

Because I'm going to be using
this as a splash back,

I'm going to varnish it
with a spray varnish, but that's...

That's easy.

Fabula-ruso.

Over in his workshop, Dick's trying
to work out how to turn

100kg of barrel into
a wall-mounted memento.

Angel would like me
to cut the top off a barrel,

so we've got a circle with some bits
of barrel on it on the wall.

That is a problem.

Ancl the reason that is a problem
is because every single piece

of this barrel has been made to fit
together and to be held together

by the bands around it.

So, as an entity, it is really
strong and by cutting it off

right here somewhere,
it's going to mean

that it's all going
to want to fall apart.

I couldn't get her to believe that.

But if I take this as my home-made
barrel, yeah, well,

it's very similar because you've got

all these elements going
from top to bottom,

you've got bits in the end,
and it's held together by bands.

But I have to go and cut through...

Ancl look at that,
I can cut through...

There's one of the barrel lengths.

Cut through and just cut through the
next one and, oops, there we go.

But the more I go round,
the less integrity there is here.

Oops.

That's my problem.

That doesn't look so good.

Dick, though,
has a possible solution -

in a belt and braces kind of way.

This one is beyond use.

Cos it's all... I can see it will
never hold any liquid.

This is all we're interested in.

This is the display.

My problem is,
as I get towards the end of this...

...it's we're going to try
and fall apart even more.

So I'm going to have to put a couple
of little braces in

just to make the barrel complete.

This is it.

The words vinegar and barrel both
come from the French vinagre -

literally meaning sour wine.

And as it was used around the
chateau for cleaning and cooking,

it was obviously best
bought in bulk.

But the vinegar barrel isn't
the only original feature

being given a new lease of life.

The Atelier de Mariage's
150-year-old walls

are also getting some
much-needed attention.

I love them. I mean, they are...
They're a bit dusty.

They're a bit, you know,
sort of worn, a bit dirty.

But I'm not changing it.

In fact, I am sealing it in.

Coating the stone with
a mix of glue and water

will not only reduce the dust,
but also prevent water damage.

Ajob that no-one's been too
concerned about in here until now.

Its room is going to, you know,
move on from being a store room...

...into a store room with flowers
and china.

It's also going to give me memories

because, like,
every bouquet that we do

is going to remind me of the
wedding.

It is going to be...
It's going to be lovely.

Just got to get finished.

In the outbuildings,

Dick's about to find out
whether he's made a piece of art

or a pile of kindling.

The top is not attached
to the bottom any more.

That's good.

With a bit of luck,

I'll be able to lift this up without
all the bits falling out.

Creating the new wedding workshop

clock, fixing a leak is one thing...

Now the erratic weather's
settled down,

work on the chateau can continue -
both outside and in.

Let's take it up.
What could possibly go wrong?

Angel's new workbench
in the Atelier de Mariage

has been pushed out the way,

and as it's going to be used
as a flower chandelier,

the old trellis raised into
position.

Oh, wow. Stop. Stop, stop.

It needs to be centralised
with the light, really.

And then repositioned.

Ancl then, yeah, that's about it.

I think it looked a little
bit nicer lower.

Otherwise, it looks like a
trellis on the ceiling.

Now that's in place,

preparations for the wedding season
once again gather pace.

Tables are brought out of storage.

HONKING

Even Dick's rather peripatetic
geese are corralled

behind a brand-new fence.

CLANG!

HONKING

And now that Dick and Angel have
stayed in all four guest rooms,

there are jobs
to do in the boudoir suite.

We tried everything when
we were staying in the rooms.

Something that surprised me
completely is this.

It hurt!

The shower hurt me.

Well, it's like little needles.

Maybe that's what people like.

I'm going to fix it,
I don't like it.

But a scaled-up shower head isn't
the only problem they came across.

HUMMING

You can hear...

That's the pump upstairs.

A booster pump in the attic keeps
the chateau's water pressurised.

HUMMING

That's the pump kicking in.

Unfortunately for their guests,

both the attic and the booster pump

are just above the boudoir
suite bed.

HUMMING

I can see my problem straight away.

This isn't isolated from
the floor at all,

which means when the pump's turning
around and it's vibrating,

it's going straight into that piece
of plywood, straight into the board.

There's a joist there that's
vibrating the ceiling below.

I'm going to fix
that by isolating this.

Right.

And an old sponge kneeler
could be the perfect solution.

I think it's as simple as that.

Done. Let's see if it works.

Pump's on.

SILENCE

That's much better.

Down in the chateau's basement,
Angel's Atelier de Mariage

is finally beginning to bloom -

in a dried flower kind of way.

Where would you like it to hang?

I don't know if it'll look...

OK.

I'm assuming you're going to want
to keep all of these petals,

this is great confetti stuff.
Actually, that is, isn't it?

I've not got a confetti bucket
for all the bits.

Oh, I'm loving it.

And soon, what was once a dusty,
dark cider and vinegar cellar...

...has blossomed into a colourful
and creative work space.

A place for Angel to turn her and
her bride's imaginative ideas

into glorious reality.

This room is everything
that I've dreamt of and more.

A perfect marriage between
beauty and functionality.

Love it so much.

With the hose coming out,

it just makes me giggle,
but it's just so practical

because I could, you know,
if I've got a bucket here,

if we've got a bucket here...

Ancl this is exactly the right sink
that you'd have here.

So that's why those
outbuildings are good.

You don't throw anything away
and you'll always need it one clay.

You'll find its natural home again.

Even an old cupboard that Dick
turned into a workbench

has once again been put to use.

But this time, with the antique
wallpaper that lined the cupboard

around 100 years ago now
on full display.

And as far as Angel's concerned,

the images couldn't be more
appropriate.

Well, you know, it's up
for debate, isn't it?

But, look, they're having
a wonderful time.

Come on. He's proposing there.

There's flowers.

I'm sure it must be a sign
that this was meant

to be the wedding room.

It just had to go on a bit
of a journey.

On the wall,
a memento from the old room -

now part of the new.

I didn't think I would feel
like this about the top of a barrel.

But, you know, Dick and I know
that this is one of the first things

that we saw in this room,
and it's back in its original place.

Seven years after their wedding,

and many more chateau weddings
after that,

Angel finally has somewhere

to create the most
beautiful of bouquets.

I've put lots of eucalyptus
in buckets for weddings,

but there's never been a moment
that's felt as nice.

Our eucalyptus, our buckets,
in our Atelier de Mariage.

Amongst the boxes of dried flowers
that Angel's collected...

You remember?

...there is one that is very special.

That's from our wedding.

I know!

Wow. I didn't even know
you'd kept them.

HE CHUCKLES

I'm going to put these pride
of place somewhere.

I know they are dried
and quite old now,

but they're quite beautiful still.

This came from...

...County Antrim.
This came from home.

I know, it's lovely.

This is quite special.

The Atelier de Mariage may be ready,

but it's just one of dozens of jobs
to do before the chateau

can be open to guests.

But they'll all have to wait.

All right. There you go, babes.

Because, right now, at the top
of Dick and Angel's agenda,

there's home-made sushi.

Here we are. How's that?

We've actually got a complete
and utter feast.

And even more importantly,
some family time.

eating the magnolia pickles.
