Male breast cancer patients in the following cases

are luckier than others.

The first case would be those who find out about it early.

Lee, a man in his 30s,

had never imagined that he'd have breast cancer.

One day, someone pointed out that he had a lump in his chest.

It was stage-one breast cancer.

If he had been unlucky,

he would have found his cancer

at a later stage as most patients do,

You might have breast cancer.

If someone detected your cancer before you did,

you should be grateful to that person for the rest of your life.

If that person is your girlfriend,

you two must be destined to be together.

You're also lucky

if your spouse or girlfriend is aware of your illness.

Many male breast cancer patients

fear visiting hospitals.

Visiting a breast clinic,

which is always full of women,

is something most men dread of doing.

Sadly, many male patients hesitate before seeing a doctor

in fear of what other people might think about them.

This is how the examination works.

The examination is even more painful for men

because their chests mostly consist of muscles.

If your partner is not aware of your cancer,

you'll have to go through the pain all alone.

After the surgery,

you need to wear a special bra

to stop the bleeding.

However, can you imagine a man

buying this bra himself?

Male breast cancer patients

stand out more than any other cancer patients.

Everyone gossips about them.

Everyone stares at them.

It is a battle that is too difficult to fight alone.

Sometimes,

the patient's girlfriend books appointments

under her name

to pretend that she's the one being treated.

She's taking the risk

of being gossiped about herself.

Not everyone has to do that,

but if the male patient feels too humiliated,

it could be a way to help him.

If your cancer is detected early,

and if your partner supports you, you're lucky.

Nevertheless, such a miracle doesn't happen

to most male breast cancer patients.

The hardest part is that

they can never really talk to anyone about their illness.

They have to continue working while pretending to be healthy.

They'll also keep it from their partners in fear of losing them.

That's because what they fear the most

is not the pain itself, but the prejudice

that they're not manly.

You'll find it hard to believe, but...

I was also diagnosed with breast cancer.

I was lucky enough to find out early and had my partner's full support.

However, I still had to constantly fight against deep-rooted prejudice.

I was in despair.

I couldn't tell anyone at work about my illness.

I was afraid that I might...

lose this news anchor position.

But I realized that there's something a lot more important than that.

I lost a part of my chest,

but in order to protect the person I love,

I'm making this confession,

and I have no regrets whatsoever.

I'm just sorry that I couldn't do this earlier.

Male breast cancer patients are just like other cancer patients,

and they're still men.

Fighting against cancer is hard enough.

They shouldn't suffer more from such unfair prejudice.

I hope that practical measures to help male breast cancer patients

can be put in place in the near future.

I dream of a country where even minorities can be happy.
