moving back there.

- It's me against
a wolverine right now.

- There's nothing
to fill that void.

It's just you left alone
with your thoughts.

but I don't want to tap.

- This is the most
unforgiving landscape

I've ever seen.

- This environment

you thought you had.

- Holy cow, I nailed it.

[moose moans]

[exhales sharply]

My heart is pumping so fast
right now.

[moose moans]

Just hit that moose.

[moose continues moaning]

Crazy.

Some good bubbly blood
on there.

[sniffles]
Uh-oh.

Kind of lost the blood trail
I found.

I know it's still going
somewhere, but...

[groans]

Moose leave surprisingly
small, faint footsteps...

In this hard land
of burnt stuff.

So weird to go
between here and there.

I wish I could put him
out of his misery,

but that's too big of a risk.

It could either run off
or just kill me immediately.

I'm gonna be really nervous

until I finally have
that thing.

[laughs maniacally]

That's horrible.

[grunts]

after I eat [bleep]

I'm glad the berries
have been around,

but I'm starving.

I'm just trying to fight
the hunger,

and that's only gonna last
so long.

I'd really like to

and get a fish or three.

I'm losing my belly,

but everybody loses weight
out here, you know.

Unless they've already got
a moose or 40 fish.

My consciousness doesn't want
to accept

anything other than victory.

However, my mind
doesn't understand that.

The first initial response
for your body and mind

are to retreat,
move to comfort,

move to food, move to
better shelter--a bed.

You're having
to constantly be adapting

to your changing physical
and mind state.

Well, I think I might have
missed the witching hour.

It is just quiet
as quiet can be.

[sniffs, exhales deeply]

[foreboding music]

- I always wonder--
and I shouldn't,

but I always wonder
if somebody got something big.

You know, is somebody eating
moose right now?

Hoo.
Can you imagine...

sitting next to a fire

chewing on
a big old moose steak?

[sucks teeth]

I am so tired.
I need some food.

We're gonna go hike up
in that draw,

see what's running around
up there

and to know where
things are living.

To start a hike is like
starting a good book.

You kind of just pick
a direction, and you just go.

And you get to read
what's happening,

what's going on,
what's happened over time.

I'm always trying to learn
the land

and connect with the land
and feel with the land.

And that work can lead
to food.

A game trail right there.

Something was coming in
and out here a bunch.

The trails I'm looking at
are pretty well packed trails.

I don't think caribou
are using it.

I think the caribou are
up higher.

I think moose
have been using it,

but I don't think
they're using it anymore.

So, needless to say,
I'm really glad

I did not bring a bow.

[grunts]

No food.

In all the training
I've received,

big game is never the way
you go.

You always set up
and prepare for,

instead of that one moose,
the hundreds of other things

that are out there.

If you're a student
of the show

and you look back
at five other seasons,

how many people
have landed big game?

It doesn't make sense to me,

so I am extremely happy
I did not bring a bow.

This area,
right now at this time,

there's nothing big moving.

I need to switch gears.

[dramatic music]

- [exhales sharply]

Just waiting, waiting,

[moose groans]

I do not want him getting up
and running off.

Oh, boy, he's just giving
last desperate attempts.

[ground crunches]

I knew this would be
a problem

if I happened to get a moose,

to skin the whole thing
with this thing.

That was a risk
I was willing to take.

How do I start gutting
a massive moose by myself?

That's a...

that'll be a chore.

I lived amongst the Evenki
in Siberia.

We shot a moose
in the middle of the summer,

and we chopped it up
into little cubes.

But, you know, there's, like,
a tribe of us doing it, so...

This is the first moose
I've killed and processed

on my own,
and it's a ton of work.

Can't quit, dark's coming.

There's obviously a ton
of predators around here,

and they know where
the meat's at.

Let's try cutting off
the back leg,

seems like the thing to do.

I would really like
the weather to come.

It's kind of like living
in a refrigerator right now.

I'd definitely would rather
live in a freezer

and because
the meat spoiling's a concern.

There's the joint.

There's the femoral artery.

Yikes.

She's almost free.

Whoa, look at althat meat.

[uneasy music]

Let's see what we're dealing
with in there.

I just want to reach up there
and free up

the stomach and the guts,
so I can pull 'em all out.

Can't believe I did that.

The stomach opened up,

just happened.

This is such good meat,

and it's so covered in crap.

A lazy moment--that's gonna
cost me so much meat.

Big mistake.

Well, after that debacle,

let's just carry it over
while there's still light.

Head is decapitated.
[grunts]

A heart as big as my head.

Right now it's getting dark.
I got to haul this meat back.

Animals, of course,
they're more active at night,

and it's a very dangerous
situation.

actually is

until you got to carry it
piece by piece.

I was just sleeping,
and all of a sudden,

I felt my right leg
start to cramp up.

Last night was eye-opening.

You know, I've been
pushing my body

to physical limits,
and you need to protect it.

So today is
take care of Barry day--

focus on hydrating,
take it slow...

have fun.

[grunts]

This is my throwing stick.

It's got good weight,
balance.

It's ambidextrous.

You can throw it
with either hand.

But that's not all.

I don't know
how to play guitar.

But if I did, it'd probably

and be on a plane
probably tomorrow

or the next day.

but it's so much more for me.

My dad was diagnosed
with cancer.

He didn't even go get help
or treatment.

He started drinking heavily.

My dad died
and left my mom penniless.

If I ever did anything
like that,

I would never be able to
forgive myself.

I would lay at night awake,
and it would eat me alive.

a quick tour

There's meat hanging up

this end of my camp.

The moose head up there
in the tree.

You got a delkin,
as it's called in Evenki,

but it's just a shelf
that a mouse can't climb.

Now I will go about hanging
some of the meat in my shelter.

Put a little smoke on it.

♪

All the forest creatures want
my meat,

and I got to come up

with a way of keeping it
away from them.

Any way you try to protect it,

there's, like,
something that can get at it.

You hang it in the trees,
and the birds peck at it.

Lay it in your shelter,
and a bear can come in

and just, like,
a big raging beast

and think it's all his.

There's no obvious choice
for me,

but got to always be
thinking of solutions.

The worst-case scenario
really is that

all this meat spoils.

Like, that's just not
an option to me right now.

There you go.

Okay, let's see.

As you can see,
we're starting to get

a nice smoky patina on there.

That's good.

And I'll just sleep
under the meat tonight.

[dramatic music]

I'm getting a little worried
because it's not ideal

to sleep with 600 pounds
of meat surrounding you.

You're like a burrito.

There's a certain risk to it.

I don't want to be doing this
too many nights.

A lot of calories in a moose,

but you spend a lot of calories
protecting your moose

from all the other freeloaders
of the forest.

I'm covered.

Yeah, I don't want to be
locked to my house

protecting my food,
but I don't have a choice.

I'm gonna be, like,
only half asleep tonight

listening for the bears.

Well, that just put
a new twist on things.

[eerie music]

- So last night we got
a little bit of snow

that accumulated
and came into the shelter.

So I think priority number one
today is gonna be

to go out, spend two
to four hours probably

working on my shelter.

Okay, so we got
a quick change of plans.

I just walked out my door,

and there is a set
of wolverine tracks.

That's food right there.

They have been snowed in
a little bit,

so it happened probably
just pre-dawn.

That's the first...

"larger than a squirrel
or a rabbit" game tracks

I've seen
in this entire basin.

That's awesome.

Looks like they head
this direction.

Ah, this is super exciting
for me,

so I'm gonna go
and do something about it.

I kind of feel like
I'm starting to understand

the lack of wildlife.

And I think it has something
to do with two things--

the season and the fact that
there was a big fire here,

all over through this area

for thousands and thousands
of acres.

So this wolverine's
a big thing.

♪

I've been going double time
after this thing.

Wolverines--
they just cover mileage,

and they follow every tangent
and go over every boulder

and through every obstacle.

And I have been doing
the same thing,

tracking it all along.

[wind whistling]

The wind is really picking up.

The wind is just obliterating
the tracks here.

♪

Well, I probably made
a poor decision.

♪

I decided to
continue following

that wolverine track,

and the weather
has really gone to [bleep].

Um...

[ominous music]

I need to get the hell off
of this rock

'cause I'm just so exposed.

It's basically a blizzard
right now.

And I don't need to be here.
I need to be in my shelter.

This is what it looks like
where I am right now,

and...

the weather has really
started to take its toll on me.

So I need to get my ass home.

You cannot make a mistake

'cause the weather gets
so crazy.

This is not a place

where you're gonna get
second chances.

There's two types of people
in the world.

There's people that,
when things go sideways,

become more focused,

or they become scattered.

They fall apart.

I've never been one
to scatter.

I'm so damn tired right now.

I just been tracking
a wolverine

probably five miles
till I lost his tracks

in the blowing snow.

It was a bit
of a calculated risk.

I knew I needed to work
on the shelter,

but I'm just so hard up
for any kind of wildlife

to hunt out here.

[exhales deeply]
So I had to do it.

And I used up three days'
worth of calories,

I bet, just now.

Oh, man.

Can't let that happen again.

♪

[foreboding music]

- Dawned on me...
[utensil clangs]

"Brady"...

"Why are you doing all this
laundry by hand like an idiot,

when you could have
a machine do it for you?"

Excited, aren't you?

I don't think anybody else

I hear a lot of people
banking on hunting

a big game animal, and that's
winning the lottery.

And so my mind-set in this
is nitty-gritty--

snares, traps, fish lines.

There might be one elk
in the area,

but there's gonna be
a hundred fish.

I can see the fish down
in there.

♪

Oh, yeah.

We got one.

It's awesome.

I'm going back to camp
to start a fire.

Catching fish,
it's become enjoyable to me.

I've got my stuff dialed in.
I'm starting to figure it out.

And I love putting food
in that food cache.

So the plan for the night...

I've been setting snares

and trying to produce
some meat.

Nothing so far, but I just know
that the colder it gets,

the more meat I'm gonna need.

with rabbits or hares.

Like, I know very little
about them.

but that doesn't mean

It's quite chilly.

Definitely feel like it was
the coldest night we've had

since I've been here.

Even with a big fire
last night,

it took me a long time
to get warm in my sleeping bag,

which doesn't normally happen.

Normally, I'm toasty
pretty quick.

But, um...yeah.

[mild music]

We just got a fresh snow,

and I feel like I'm usually
pretty resilient with cold,

but I don't have a lot
of experience

being in really cold climates

while I'm also not eating
very well.

So I'm hoping
for something in my snares.

There are rabbits about

because right here...

are some rabbit tracks.

One, two--
the front paws.

And then one, two--

the back paws.

Let's go check snares.

I got a rabbit.

I know I can set snares
and consistently get rabbits--

if I could get a rabbit
a day,

I can really live here
long term.

I am so grateful.

I know a bit
about rabbit biology.

And wild rabbits,
their skin is so thin

that it's not strong enough
for you to tan

into a solid piece of fur,

so the only way to use it
is to case-skin it.

So you take it off
in a tube, essentially,

and then you cut the skin
into a long continuous piece

by cutting it in a spiral.

♪

I've been a craftsperson
from the time I was a child,

making clothes myself
for my Barbie dolls.

I just had a deep desire
to make everything I could

with my own hands
and really understand

the things in my life
in a deep way

and where they came from.

And that is one
of my major skills

for being able to live
really, really well out here.

♪

Okay.

Now I have this long...

piece of rabbit skin.

[sniffs]

Gonna tie one end
to a branch...

and twist.

While it's still wet,
you kind of twist it

so that the flesh side
comes together

and then the fur is on
the outside.

So you end up
with this really fuzzy rope.

It's not perfect,

but it is my first
rabbit skin rope.

And it is sure gonna be

a soft and luxurious thing.

And once it's dry...

It can be woven

into something warm
and fabulous.

Isn't that amazing?

Look how big that is
from one rabbit hide

that would be way too thin
to actually tan.

[sniffs]

[tense music]

- I'm gonna cook a piece
of this fresh moose.

Let's see

Look at that shish kebab.

with a little berry action.

The new official name
of this meal is Berry Love.

When I am successful

I think about my mom.

I have devastated her
with my life choices

and all she wants to do
is see me happy.

kind of screaming outside.

Like, it was definitely
a kind of a sketchy noise.

Like, right near the shelter.

I can't see nothing.

I couldn't see it.

It was growling...

kind of this weird,
yowly growl kind of thing.

Okay, I'm finally dressed.
I'm ready to go.

I'm gonna grab my bow.

So I'm gonna go try to track it

and see who it was.

I know that now we're
in the winter season,

the big animals
are gonna be hungry.

They need to get the calories
they need,

and so that is a real caution
for me.

They're surviving
in that moment

of, "I need food,
and you could be it."

I'm not sure

a very long tail.

I'm kind of hoping

because what if I catch
a hare,

and then the lynx comes along,
it's like,

"Oh, hey, free meal.

That's not gonna work.

I'll fight that lynx
if he thinks he's getting it.

- There's a bear coming.
