The Kingdom of Punjab stretched

from the British-held India to the south,

from Afghanistan in the west to Tibet in the east.

This mighty kingdom, led by an astute statesman,

Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Fearsome, fearless and feared,

he was known as the lion of Punjab.

Ranjit Singh's death

of power struggle

of his heirs.

His youngest son, Duleep Singh, was crowned at the age of five.

The British drove the final nail into the Sikh kingdom

by removing him from his throne and his mother.

They did not kill him.

They exiled him from his people and his land.

This is his story.

May the winds of your sails take you across smooth waters

and your life henceforth in the hands of Lord Jesus.

He is an impressionable young boy.

His studies in the Christian doctrine

are going splendidly well.

The Maharaja will be one of us.

Receive on thy forehead the sign of the Holy Cross.

Openly profess the faith of Christ crucified.

I baptize you in the name of the Father,

and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Do put a little smile on your face, sir.

That painting is going in the Grand Room

and will be looked at for hundreds of years.

You wouldn't want people to think of you

as a miserable and unhappy boy. Hmm?

And do get on with it, Franz.

Everyone is waiting for my handsome prince!

Your Majesty.

Dr. Login, I relinquish to you your responsibility.

In all honesty, I do hate to let you go.

I was rather looking forward to showing you off.

But Dr. Login, I gather, has some other plans in mind.

I am truly indebted to you, Your Majesty.

Don't be such a pushover, Dr. Login.

Enjoy this enchanting music. Have a drink.

There's someone I would like you to meet.

Go on, Duleep.

I can see there are many young ladies

eagerly awaiting your company.

Come, come. It's not polite to keep people waiting.

Your Majesty.

Good evening.

So... Now, let's see.

Surely amongst all these beautiful young ladies,

there's one fit enough to bear your children, my son.

Ah. Now, that is the someone I want you to meet.

Are you well, sir?

Splendid shot, sir. You have your kill.

Not good enough, Arur.

Still only the fourth best in the country.

With time, you will be number one, sir.

There is much to hunt in these forests of Britannia.

My boy!

My prince!

No, do leave that to others, Duleep.

Objects break.

In particular, those that are rather fragile.

Do follow me.

And broken, of course, they are of no value.

Such comfort in the house of our Lord.

Do you feel that, Duleep?

Yes?

Yes.

Come. Pray with me, Duleep.

What troubles you, Duleep?

What bears so heavy on your heart?

Speak.

Speak with the will of your freedom.

Freedom?

Yes, you are a free man. As are we all.

Yes.

A royal subject.

Yes, but with the immunity of full freedom

to speak your mind.

I have to see my mother.

I feel your desire, son.

But it may not be well taken

by those who have toiled so painstakingly

to take care of your person and your every need.

What good can it do?

Everything Lady Login and myself have labored to provide for you,

and that with such profound love,

compassion and understanding of your every need,

would come to naught.

And because of your actions, you risk losing everything.

Being reduced to living like a commoner

amongst the very people--

People? What people?

Lady Login has been more than a mother to you,

and I have given you the love of a father.

As I felt it in my heart.

Your mother was not capable of your care.

We all did what we felt was best for you.

But I want to see her.

There is so much that troubles.

I have questions that remain unanswered.

-I understand-- -Please!

Please make this possible.

I don't even know where she is.

Help me.

Why now, after all these years?

The boy is all grown up.

He has questions that we do not have the answers for.

Where is she?

In Nepal.

Old, sick, and I believe she's losing her sight.

So, not much of a danger anymore.

Her days of rebellion are over.

Let him see his mother.

Leave the rest to our mighty Lord.

There's a lion that sleeps in the heart of that boy.

I'm afraid if awakened, the roar may be unbearable.

-I welcome you to India. -Lord Canning.

I receive you with full honors befitting your status.

Thank you.

However, I do request

that we keep this visit to its agreed-upon purpose.

I am just here to see my mother, Lord Canning.

Thank you.

And if there is anything that I can do

to make your visit here as comfortable as it needs to be,

please do let me know.

They seem to be afraid of something.

Please, this way, sir.

Duleep?

Yes.

In my wait for you, my eyes have betrayed me.

So many tears have been shed.

And now I can't even see you well.

The one for whom I have longed, for so many years...

Now you're in front of me and I can't even see you clearly.

They have changed you so much.

Not the same royal son who was stolen from me 14 years ago.

I didn't know I could feel so much pain.

I have not only lost a kingdom, I have lost a son too.

Time can be so cruel...

and destiny, an inevitable foe.

We were kings once, and we had a kingdom.

Tell me about England and your home.

It's cold most of the time.

Dim, cloudy weather.

Besides summertime, you really don't see the sun very much.

But I have heard

that the sun never sets on the British Empire.

-But it is very beautiful. -The people?

Everybody is really good to me.

God-fearing, honest...

kind-hearted people.

Kind?

Are the people in England different

than the ones I have come to know?

It's not just them.

Some of our own people turned out to be traitors, too.

Your father, the king,

worked hard to keep them all united.

The Lion of Punjab built the kingdom straw by straw.

His pyre hadn't even simmered down yet...

and members of the Royal Court

had already started plotting to take over the kingdom.

The British were waiting at our borders,

watching us like vultures.

They had already taken India in their grip.

Only Punjab was left.

And it was the most valuable to them.

The English knew

they could finally launch a decisive strike.

Tell me about the Queen... Victoria.

Is she beautiful?

She's white.

Yes, obviously she's white, but...

But not beautiful. Am I right?

She says that I'm very good-looking.

Handsome. Charming.

And pleasing to the heart.

She really admires my eyes a lot.

She calls me "Black Prince."

You're not a prince. You're a king.

She treats me very well.

You were born to be a king.

And a king you became, my son.

Don't you realize what has taken place?

Lahore was awash with blood.

The price was dear.

Your father's eldest son, Kharak Singh,

ascended to the throne.

But his queen, Rani Chand Kaur, had bigger ambitions.

She wanted to make her son, Nau Nihal, the King of Punjab.

Nau Nihal became our ruler.

However, his reign only lasted a day,

as he was crushed under a falling gate

while coming back from his father's funeral.

Now, Rani Chand Kaur was bathing,

when her servants strangled her to death.

Sher Singh, Maharaja's second son in line,

was placed on the throne

with theKhalsa'sblessing and full backing.

Don't stop.

Sir, are you sure you want to know?

Yes.

Maharaja Sher Singh was watching wrestling,

something he enjoyed immensely.

Who was it?

Ajit Singh Sandhawalia.

He declared himself the Vizier,

and you... the king.

You did not tell me this before.

I didn't think it mattered.

It wouldn't have changed anything.

We are a foolish nation, the Sikhs.

We threw away the most important gift of the Guru

because of greed.

The thing he beckoned us to do away with, we embraced,

and lost his kingdom.

We apologize for bothering you so early in the morning,

but we need to talk to you as well.

That's alright. Tell me, what is it?

We wish to meet the King.

How many of them?

A small battalion.

But many more, not far from here.

They wish to have counsel with you.

I wish to meet them too.

Sir, the British are watching our every move.

It could be seen as treason.

The English took everything.

All my possessions, one by one.

My jewelry, my clothes.

My dignity and honor, all tossed into the dirt.

Now I'm going to their country to live among them.

Do you see the irony in that, Duleep?

Maharani Ji?

The carriage has arrived and is waiting.

It can wait.

Until I give the order.

Yes.

I'm very tired.

I don't have the strength to fight anymore.

Duleep...

Don't become like me.

You have the blood of the Lion of Punjab

running through your veins.

Carve your own destiny.

Blessed shall be those

who praise the True and Timeless One!

They are soldiers of the Sikh kingdom, Duleep.

They need a leader who can lead them to freedom.

-Your Highness. -Maharani Jindan.

Yes, Your Highness.

I pray your stay here will be comfortable and warm

as I welcome you to the shores of England.

Yes, Your Highness, it is.

-And her health? -Much better now, Your Highness.

Come, join me for tea.

-She talks a lot. -She invited us for tea.

We've come from so far away and she is just serving us tea?

I have seen these before.

I drank tea from these cups before.

I hope you are enjoying the tea, Rani Jindan.

I am rather fond of it.

Looks like these cups have been stolen from us.

She says the tea is good.

And familiar too, Your Highness.

I must excuse myself. Do please enjoy the tea.

Where did she go?

She didn't even offer us any food.

We were only invited to tea.

I see the medicine I sent you has done you well, Maharani.

The taste of this food

is so different from the flavor of the food in Punjab.

Do you agree, Dr. Login?

Despite the fact that these spices came from our Punjab.

That is how it all began.

You came to us for our spices

and ended up swallowing our kingdom.

Yes, spices.

It must be because the water is different.

It could be the water, Maharani.

I am glad you agree with me.

If I knew you were such a caring and honest gentleman,

I would not have plotted to poison you.

I did try my best.

Poison?

The thought had crossed my mind.

Dr. Login, eat your supper.

I have come to terms with my situation.

It's all in the past.

There's nothing to worry about.

I've decided not to kill you.

Are the spices too hot for you, Dr. Login?

My honorable Queen.

Colonel Hurbon?

It has been a long time, memsahib.

Time has its own destiny.

Yes. And it has not been as kind as it seems.

But we are warriors.

Are we not, Colonel Hurbon?

Yes, we are.

Warriors of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Army of theKhalsa.

You have served him well.

It was my honor,memsahib.

The sword?

Yes,memsahib.

Given to me by the Lion of Punjab himself.

I know.

I remember it all very well.

And now, I want you to have this.

I know...

There is a yearning in my soul,

telling me to battle on, to become free.

But I am...

The young Maharaja Duleep, he must fight on.

You must instill in him the will and courage

to take back what is rightfully his.

He must know his purpose in life.

Lead his people to freedom.

-Thank you. -Please,memsahib.

It was not only my duty,

but my fulfilment of my pledge to my king.

He was a great king.

Very wise and an astute politician.

His faith in his religion was absolute.

Even after the greatest of victories,

he bowed before his faith.

He used to say, "There is nothing higher than faith."

He was accountable only to theKhalsa.

The Lion of Punjab's Sword of Justice.

I want you to keep it now.

Carry it with great pride and courage.

You are the rightful heir to the sword.

Who am I?

You are the one that the prophecy speaks about.

The one who will regain freedom for his people

and rule his subjects fairly and wisely.

The cold is really chilling my bones.

It's not like the cold back in our country.

Should I get you another blanket?

Thank God.

The sun decided to show its face.

I can see the warmth in the reflection of this

across your face.

No, leave it.

There's nothing more divine than the warmth of a diamond.

There was a diamond once.

The diamond of the king.

Yes, Duleep. You.

You had wealth, personal wealth.

Land grants, salt mines

and one special diamond.

The diamond?

The Mountain of Light. Kohinoor.

-A gift. -Gift?

Your gift.

"Mountain of Light," the diamond.

Cold. Cold by nature, I'm afraid.

Diamonds are.

It was stolen. Stolen from you, Duleep.

Your kingdom, your wealth.

Your dignity.

And in particular, your faith.

I am confused, Lord.

Help me.

For I know not who I am and where I belong.

God came to us in the form of Jesus Christ.

He lived, died and rose for us

so that, through his suffering and sacrifice,

we may attain his favor.

I was but a child.

I was taken away from her.

I did not know of the ways of the world.

I wanted to learn.

But I wanted to learn everything.

Good. Bad. And who I was.

You were taught what was right for you.

I was taught what they wanted to teach me.

What was right for them.

The Maharani was unable to care for you.

-She was losing her sanity. -She was my mother.

Your safety and wellbeing

were of the utmost importance to the Crown.

Lady Login and I cared for you as our own.

Our own flesh and blood.

You are part of who and what I am.

-But I am a... -Christian!

You are a Christian, my son.

And the path of Lord Jesus Christ is your salvation.

My salvation is in knowing who and what I really am.

Not in what you say I am.

I was completely alone.

A woman...

surrounded on all four sides by bloodthirsty vultures.

I needed a mother!

You managed to lose yourself...

and me as well.

He was the only one we could trust.

Your uncle, Jawahir, your guardian.

You drew your sword against the blood of the Lion of Punjab!

Your face was covered with his blood.

Sorrow turns people mad.

What have they done to you, Duleep?

They stole you away from me

and filled your heart with absolute lies,

lies that you have come to believe as the truth.

They have killed the soul of the Lion of Punjab.

The vultures you talk about were everywhere.

And you abandoned me. I was but a child.

Not a king.

The king was of your making, not mine.

It was your destiny to become a king.

Maharani?

I was told I would find you here.

You're a man of faith.

I don't know anything of your faith,

and I have no desire to know,

but I can only assume that it holds one

to be good, just and honorable.

I think any faith should do that...

if it claims to believe in God.

Maharani. It is very cold outside.

It's not good for your health. Come inside.

My health doesn't look any worse than yours, Dr. Login.

Time.

Time has not been kind to us, I gather.

Good to some... and a bit worse for others.

Forgive me.

That's not enough.

For the damage that you have done,

no kind of apology will suffice.

The pain you have caused a grieving mother...

You stole Duleep from me... and changed him forever.

You squashed his soul by telling him absolute lies!

I have longed for him to call me "mother"...

and to hear the Guru's name from his lips.

What have you done to my son?

Believe in whatever you wish.

But I believe there is just one God,

whose governance we all live under.

And I can assure you...

that you will not be forgiven!

Duleep.

Don't forget your promise to me.

I am to be cremated...

as per Sikh rites...

on the soil of my birth.

Over there,

Thakur Singh Sandhawalia is the only one you can trust.

Trust no one else.

He was your father's most trusted ally.

His loyalty is unquestionable.

Raise your sword...

and reclaim your kingdom.

Do you promise, my son?

Yes.

The souls of those that die in Him

depart to be with Him,

when they behold the face of God in light and glory,

waiting for the full redemption of their bodies.

I will be taking her home. To Punjab.

She will be cremated as per Sikh rites.

That was my mother's wish.

Sir. You need to come with me.

My son.

It's been a good journey.

Now I must enter the house of my Lord.

Be good to yourself, my son.

Be steadfast in everything that I have taught you.

We commend Dr. John Spencer Login to the mercy of God.

We commit his body to ground.

Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

Now I truly am an orphan.

Respected Mother.

I am going to take you home, to Punjab.

With a great deal of trepidation on my part...

But I must.

The circumstances compel me to.

Therefore, I humbly request

that you depart for Britain immediately.

Your passage into Punjab... is no longer possible.

You yourself created the creation.

You yourself infused your power into it.

You behold your creation,

like the losing and winning dice of the Earth.

Whoever has come, shall depart.

All shall have their turn.

I hope you forgive me, Mother.

For I could not take you to the land of Punjab.

Maharaja, we are honored to have you pass through American Misson School

and present these diplomas to our graduates.

No. Please.

Do you know who I am?

Someone I am clearly not and can never be.

When you are my wife, you will be who I am.

Can we count? One...

Can you count?

Shall we count? Can we count? One...

Can you count with me? One...

Alms for the needy. Alms for the needy, sir.

I too had riches once.

Far greater than imagination could hold.

A kingdom.

I know who you are.

One beggar cannot take alms from another.

Good day, sir.

Alms for the needy. Alms for the needy.

Pray together.

Forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Sir, something sits heavy on your mind.

I'm winning.

And that too without much of an effort.

Sir...

I am trying to build these dreams

that were once our reality in our lands.

I am fooling myself

into believing that I am someone that clearly...

I am not.

And neither are you, Arur.

We are living a life of illusion.

Can you continue to live with that, Arur?

We are Sikhs.

Yes, sir. We are Sikhs.

We have a kingdom, do we not?

Yes, sir, we do.

And I... its king.

Yes, sir.

Maharaja, Arur Singh. Maharaja.

Come, my prince. Drink.

The tea is just wonderful.

I believe it's from Assam.

Yes, Your Majesty. I believe it is.

I wish to ask something, Your Majesty.

Yes? Do speak.

About the Kingdom of Punjab.

Yes, there was a kingdom.

And I, its king.

Yes.

Taken from me by lies and deceit.

They were God-fearing men

who thought of what was best for you and the people.

Their concerns were not for my wellbeing

or the wellbeing of our people.

They were not the Christians they professed to be.

They were not men of truth.

Then tell me of a kingdom built on truth, Duleep.

The kingdom of my father.

Your father was a man of truth, from what I know of him.

But what happened after he died, hmm?

A kingdom in disarray.

The only truthful kingdom I know of, Duleep,

is the kingdom of our Lord.

What you seek is all gone now, my Black Prince.

I am not a prince.

Maharaja?

I am very pleased to see you looking like a Sikh.

But this is a state function.

It will raise a lot of eyebrows.

I am who I am.

A Sikh.

Come, Arur Singh.

We have a function to attend and eyebrows to raise.

The Punjab papers.

Finally available to the people.

"Maharani Jindan is a serious obstacle

to our interest in the Kingdom of Punjab.

Every effort must be made

to discredit her among her people.

Separate her from power.

Take the young Maharaja away from her.

Only then we will have a clear road to victory."

The world needs to know.

They need to be awakened

to the reality of who and what the British really are.

A bunch of Fagins.

For what they did to a little boy.

They stole his childhood...

and tore out his heart.

And in the process of their deceit,

they decapitated a great kingdom and drank its blood and glory.

Glory.

Not of valor, not of any brave act.

But cunningness and fraud.

A letter, Arur Singh. ToThe Times.

Exposing all that we have learned

about how the English stole the Kingdom of Punjab

and betrayed the trust of my father.

I will demand, in no uncertain terms,

that what is rightfully mine be given back to me

without any further delay or removes.

Maharaja.

I have read your memorial to Lord Salisbury.

Sir O'Burne, you are an hour late.

I have waited.

I do apologize.

But I cannot comprehend how a person in your position

could court a rebuff, by demand,

something that no government in their right mind

would ever consider, much less satisfy.

You are talking of transactions of nearly half a century ago,

which if reopened, as you desire,

would reopen every act

of the state of British government in India.

That may not be such a bad thing.

Truth is all I seek.

They have treated me like an animal.

They are trying to buy my silence with a pittance.

They are now trying to goad me into desperation.

They forget I am a king!

You surrendered your kingdom with alacrity.

You could say nothing at the time

of the justice that was dealt out to you.

Justice? Injustice of the highest order.

than total and complete governance of my kingdom.

By me.

The government of India wants to get rid of me and my family,

that we may sink into oblivion?

That will not happen.

I will not vanish without a fight.

My mother had said to me there's only one man I can trust.

Sardar Thakur Singh Sandhawalia.

We cannot turn back now, Arur Singh.

And live in England in an utter state of humiliation.

My pleas, my democratic approach for justice,

has fallen on deaf ears.

The government doesn't care.

The Prime Minister is afraid to meet with me,

even for a few minutes, to listen to our grievances.

And now, as Sikhs, we must not just demand

but take back what is rightfully ours.

Send a wire to Thakur Singh Sandhawalia.

Immediately, Maharaja.

Maharaja? They are here.

Thakur Singh, Maharaja.

So many years have passed.

It was a very long and arduous journey,

but now we are here to take you home.

There is so much I want to know, Thakur Singh.

You must tell me everything.

Yes, Maharaja.

You are the heir to the Sikh Kingdom of Punjab.

TheKhalsawill rise.

Khalsajust needs a purpose.

Khalsaneeds you.

That pure and holy land...

awaits the fulfillment of the prophecy.

The prophecy?

You must re-embrace your faith.

Not only in principle,

but also in appearance, deeds and actions.

My soul yearns to be a Sikh.

Then it shall be done as your heart desires.

The soil of your birth awaits your arrival.

They will celebrate the return of their real king.

When you embrace your faith again...

theKhalsawill rise.

Their cry of victory will be heard across the land.

This money is for holy offerings at the Golden Temple.

Pray for my swift return to our beloved homeland.

I am restless to meet my people and see my palace.

Until that time, you will find solace in this.

These are the prayers of our Gurus.

These are the only treasures we seek in life.

What is this, Maharaja?

What of me?

And the children?

You are Christian. As am I, and the children.

And Christian we shall always be.

In life and in death.

We are your family.

Don't destroy us...

I beg of you.

I plead mercy with you, do not abandon this family.

We are all you have, Maharaja!

The kingdom is gone.

Subjects fake, prophecy false.

Look around you. What do you see?

Decay of your madness!

"My Sikh brothers, I beg your forgiveness

for adopting a foreign religion

and forsaking the faith of my ancestors.

I wish to be baptized as a Sikh again.

It is now my desire to return again to Bombay.

By the grace of the Almighty, this will happen.

My beloved countrymen, I am your own fresh and blood.

Every second, my heart yearns to set foot on my homeland again.

In order to reclaim the Sikh kingdom,

I need my Sikh brothers by my side."

Our king is coming to lead us to freedom.

Blessed shall be those

who praise the True and Timeless One!

O Nanak, through this Naam, a state of bliss is obtained!

With your grace, may all mankind be well!

You do know that by doing this,

you risk the loss of all that you have?

I have already taken the first steps to abjure Christianity...

for I no longer have faith

in the so-called Christian government.

I am resolved to go to India.

The government of India

is prepared to offer you a much higher stipend.

Which shall be more than sufficient to cover your needs.

But it will require your total and absolute surrender.

No more of your nonsensical demands.

You insult me with your arrogance.

May Nanak's blessings be upon you.

A man from the India Office

offered me £50,000 to change my mind.

To accept my destiny as an English subject.

It's not about the money.

It's not about my personal wealth.

It's not about the riches that give our body comforts.

It's about the yearning in my soul...

to be free,

to lead my people as free soldiers of God's army.

Soldiers of theKhalsa.

I want to belong.

They are watching us. Our every move, Maharaja.

I know. Let them. We will go.

We will strike a dagger in their fat bellies.

Not in their backs, like they did with us.

We will look them in their eyes,

see their dishonesty, their fear,

and then bury that dagger deep into their flesh.

We sail for India and take back my kingdom.

Are you with me, Arur Singh?

Yes, Maharaja.

Is that all, sir?

Yes, that is all.

These four telegrams are to be sent 24 hours after I leave.

Thank you, sir. Will do so, sir.

God be with you on your journey, sir.

Thank you.

Good day, my good man.

And this one, sir, is addressed to you personally.

From Lord Kimberley.

"The Maharaja cannot be allowed to set foot on Indian soil."

See to it.

Yes, sir.

It's important for me to hold this family

Embarking on this journey. A new dream.

They will be real princes and princesses of a real kingdom.

Prince Victor one day will take my place as the Maharaja.

They need to be part of the journey, Arur Singh.

When I take the true name of the Khalsa

and embrace all that it represents within my soul...

They need to witness that. They need to see its power.

And the desire for them

to become one with me and the Guru...

must come from them.

My sovereign, before quitting England,

I humbly venture to address Your Majesty

in order to convey the inexpressible gratitude I feel

for all Your Majesty's graciousness,

both to me and mine during my stay here in this country,

I could not face the pain that such an event would cause me

if I ventured to take my leave in person.

And therefore I humbly implore Your Majesty's forgiveness.

Your heartbroken subject, Duleep Singh.

Maharaja Duleep Singh. I am Brigadier-General Hogg.

You are to come with me, sir.

You are placing me under arrest?

My instructions, sir, are to escort you off the ship

as your onward passage to India is not permitted.

Am I to see a difference in an arrest

and what I am being made to do against my free will?

You will need to place handcuffs on me, Brigadier.

Because I am your prisoner.

That will not be necessary, Maharaja.

Please, come with me.

I leave this ship unwillingly, as a prisoner of the English.

How long will you keep me here?

That depends entirely on you, Maharaja.

However, India is not possible.

Maharaja, they are here.

We will have to find two more Khalsa Singhs.

There is a transport ship, just touched the shores.

I hear there areKhalsaSinghs among the shipmates.

There are nether worlds beneath nether worlds,

and hundreds of thousands of heavenly worlds above.

The Vedas say you can keep searching for them

until you grow weary.

The Scriptures say that there are 18,000 worlds

but in reality there is only one universe.

If you try to write an account of this,

you will come to the end of your life before you finish.

O Nanak, call Him Great! He Himself knows Himself.

On this very day, I celebrate my rebirth as a Sikh.

And I thank you, my brothers.

The children must be relieved.

They will miss you.

As will I.

I'm... I'm really sorry.

Will I ever see you again?

Yes, I know.

Your destiny.

They cannot keep us out of our land forever.

And I refuse to go back to England,

a country that I had denounced as an enemy

and no longer our home.

Then what, Maharaja?

Paris.

Ada, thank you for joining me here.

Mr. Patrick Casey, the Maharaja.

The bravest fighting men. Warriors.

Your Sikhs need to fight the right war.

There's nobody that hates the English more than the Irish.

And we have many friends.

It's an honor to meet you, Maharaja.

Oh, yes. Please meet General Charles Tevis,

American and an enemy of the English.

An honor, Maharaja.

Have you tried reasoning with the English?

I have tried everything short of begging.

Sometimes even that may not be a bad idea.

I'm surprised to hear that from you, General.

Perhaps I have seen way too much bloodshed.

Blood is what it will have to be, General Tevis.

If that's how you feel, then that's what it will be.

And it's Charles.

Dr. Elie de Cyon, I wanted to introduce you to the Maharaja,

sovereign to the Sikh nation.

As soon as the Russians have completed the railway

they are building in Central Asia,

a Russian army, along with myself,

will invade India through Afghanistan.

Sikh soldiers in the British Army will desert

and place themselves under my command.

We need to proceed to Russia immediately.

Katkov will facilitate a meeting with the Tsar.

I talked to Zubayr Pasha

and Sudan is ready to be part of the plan.

And so are Egypt and Turkey.

Native kings of Hindustan will attack British soldiers,

destroy railway and telegraph lines.

Indians will rise as one against the British.

On our front, the Irish will cause havoc for the English,

the likes of which they've never seen before.

Gentlemen, the great war against the British

is about to begin.

Everything?

Yes, everything the English need to know.

I will keep you posted further.

Duleep!

Ada, they are not going to leave us alone.

Get to the station and I will meet you there.

Hurry. This way.

Good. You are here.

Patrick Casey. I am now an Irish rebel.

It is a war, my friend.

In this war, we are all what we have to be.

We are Irish, French, Russian, and we are Sikh.

We have a common foe.

Those papers will allow you to travel into the heart of Russia,

have your meeting with the Tsar,

and raise an army against the British.

And you will get your kingdom back.

Good luck, my friend.

Maharaja, everything is on board.

-Maharaja. -Mr. Katkov.

Everything is fine, Maharaja.

The Tsar is very well aware of your presence here in Russia.

It is only a matter of a little time

for us to set a strategic meeting with him.

I understand, but there is so much that needs to be done.

So many points of interest

that need to be connected and timed across the world.

And everything depends on our meeting the Tsar.

He is the key in all this.

I promise, I will do something very quickly.

Arur, come. Sit.

You must proceed to India.

All arrangements have been made for you.

You are to meet Shashi Bhusan Mukerji.

He has promised funds,

raised in the name of the rebellion.

Liberation is not far.

There are many forces at work in India.

Your papers and funds for your travels.

Maharaja. As you command me.

By the grace of God, we will meet again soon.

I, Khalsa , belong to God. Victory belongs to God.

Mr. Arur Singh, we are pleased to see you in India.

As you can see, we are ready now...

and we are waiting.

As you know, our Maharaja is in Russia

and will lead the Russian Army through Afghanistan, into India.

How many Sikh soldiers are in Afghanistan

with the British Army?

About 20,000.

But we have roughly 40,000 spread throughout India.

Will they join us?

Yes. Every last one of them, as well as their commanders,

have pledged to support the Maharaja.

They have all sworn an oath to the Guru Granth Sahib.

125,000KukaSinghs are ready to fight.

Except for Nepal,

all the native states are with us

and ready to take up arms against the British.

The Sikh kingdom will finally be liberated.

Mr. Arur Singh?

Mr. Mukerji.

You look very tired.

You've had a long journey.

I am feeling thirsty.

Of course. We have much to talk about.

Please, follow me.

Kingdoms are not raised overnight, Mr. Katkov.

I do understand that. But time is what worries me.

How long?

I have been here, waiting, getting impatient.

Soon, my friend. Soon.

I have been hearing that for so many months.

My people are waiting with eagerness.

But nothing seems to progress on your end.

I will speak to the Tsar.

How long do we have to wait for them?

Katkov has promised to arrange a meeting with Alexander.

His efforts are noble. We must have patience.

Arur Singh, I am going to ask this one more time.

We know that you have not come to India

for some well-deserved holiday.

So speak clearly.

Who are you to meet here?

And what is the purpose of your visit?

How about a glass of brandy? On ice?

Sir.

He wants brandy. On ice.

Will not talk.

The likes of him would rather die.

Let go of me!

Well, brother...

Did you ask for brandy too?

My brother, I wish my demand had been so simple.

I asked for my country,

to liberate my motherland from these foreigners.

I promised to shed English and traitor blood.

Then our dreams have something in common.

Thakur Singh?

I hope the food tastes good.

Clean him up and lay him on his bed.

Come out!

God, give me your protection and destroy my enemies now.

I pray that my wish for peace is fulfilled.

Bless me, God, and I shall never forsake You.

Whatever I seek, I will look for it only in You.

Liberate us all.

-How is she? -Sleeping.

There's no news from Arur Singh or the others.

Now that Katkov is dead, the Tsar will not meet us.

We have to go back to Paris and rethink our move.

Sir, everybody has been arrested,

killed or banished to Kala Pani.

The so-called rebellion of Maharaja Duleep Singh

has been crushed.

You will be duly rewarded for your services to the Crown.

But one more thing, Aziz Ud-Din.

Thank you, sir.

That's all I could get.

Maharaja?

Finally, I set eyes on the man behind the roar...

as I come to deliver you the news that it is all over.

It has all come to an end.

I hate to be the man known for assassinating a king.

But what is a king without a kingdom?

Quickly. Please, take me to a doctor.

Please, hurry.

There has to be some doctor available.

Victor. My son.

You've found time to come see me.

I am most tired.

I beg you, Father, please.

Write to the Queen.

There is no other hope.

You have lost everything.

We are in extreme debts.

We are poor.

Please, ask for the pardon

so that your pensions can be restored

and we can live with a little sense of dignity.

Dignity?

I am the son of the Lion of Punjab.

And you, my blood... his blood...

All that is now gone. Forever!

Wake up to the truth.

Arur Singh, you are a free man.

Go home.

It's all over.

And be thankful we didn't hang you by the neck.

Maharaja?

As everyone else in my life...

you betrayed me too, Arur Singh.

Why did you come back?

So that you will know the truth, Maharaja.

The truth?

Our people have sold their souls.

The British are far too clever.

Yes. Is that the truth?

And the prophecy, Maharaja... is false.

Guru Gobind Singh...

could not be a false prophet.

It was the creation

of those who wanted much more than what your heart desired.

So the prophecy was never his?

It was not.

The irony of it all...

They should have killed me...

when I was a child.

Those good Christian men.

And have history speak of me

as the queen responsible for the biggest tragedy of all time?

I have enough to live with.

All I ever wanted was...

my childhood.

And all I ever wanted was the love of a child.

My son.

And now?

Now...

we are mere symbols of who we were.

Forgive me, my son.

For we have wronged you.

And now I am so helpless.

Keep them, my child.

Who are you?

I am Colonel Hurbon.

I served your father well.

And I saved your life.

Why?

So that you would rise to be king.

But I did not save you for this.

I am sorry to disappoint you.

But there isn't much left in me.

I tried.

And now?

A wave will rise across the Indian soil.

My Sikh brothers will spill blood.

Theirs and of their enemy's.

And the English will be driven out of India for good.

That day will come.

Is that your prophecy?

No.

That is my belief.

May my people forgive me...

for I could not be the king...

that I was to be.

Victory will be yours.

Believe in him, Guru Gobind Singh.
