An Oriental Odyssey

Episode 27

I think so.

Where is Miss?

Dad.

I'm sleeping. Why do you wake me up?

You are so impolite.

Sir Zhao brings the present Empress has granted.

You should thank him.

Mr. Zhao, I have other business to do. You may talk first.

Please excuse me for a while.

This is the dendrobium from the imperial garden.

Do you like it?

Thank you, Empress.

By the way,

I heard from my dad that Empress praised you in front of all officials.

And you have been promoted.

You were so amazing!

Are you serious?

Why not?

Even if we are acquaintances,

I certainly hope you will have a promising future.

We have experienced so many things together.

How can we just are acquaintances?

Is that not enough?

I have regretted knowing you.

How's Mu Le?

He's dead. I buried him.

Do you still hate me on Mu Le's death?

Are you resenting me so much?

Zhao Lanzhi, what did you say at that time?

I told you to capture him alive.

But you should attack him secretly.

How many times did I explain to you?

I didn't do that.

Why don't you believe me?

Yuan'an.

You're brave and like to take risks.

You're an interesting girl.

But I'd like to remind you

you must do things in a proper way.

Then, tell me.

Who is the man you sent for?

I mean the one treated my disease.

I have told you many times. He's a quack doctor.

But Master Ye told me that he's a distant relative.

Who lied to me?

You can answer my question later.

You look pale.

Go and have a good rest.

Remember what I said today.

You can play tricks.

But you can never disregard the law.

What is the law?

You are just the law, Sir Zhao.

Deputy Minister of Court of Judicature and Revision.

You're now a dignitary before Empress.

Listen, Zhao Lanzhi. I hate you very much now.

You just care about reasoning, not about feelings.

Now that you're so indifferent,

then we never see each other again after your leaving this gate.

Sir, please.

These are the materials and testimonies of the massacre at Ci'en Temple

and order for arrest signed by Emperor.

Sir.

This was the criminal Chen Tianshu's portrait.

OK, I knew it.

When I was in Annam, I got a tip-off.

I traced him.

But he escaped successfully.

Later, I came to the Court and I was busy then.

Without any clues, this case was laid up.

Do you have any new clues about this case?

This was a major case then.

But it has been a long time since the case happened.

So no one would investigate it.

If you can solve the case, that will a merit deed.

Yuan'an.

I have already doubted that there was someone helping you secretly.

But you denied it.

You played tricks many times.

I didn't take it seriously because I thought you were innocent.

I also hoped that person wouldn't be Chen Tianshu.

Person on the portrait was him.

It can not be wrong.

Yuan'an, how dare you!

You dare to hide the bandits and the wanted criminal!

Are we foes?

No way.

Now that I saw him,

I can't let you get away.

Chen Tianshu.

I must arrest you!

Yuan'an!

Yuan'an, tell me.

Who is the person you invited to our mansion?

Now, Zhao Lanzhi works at Court of Judicature and Revision.

He's specialized in unsolved cases.

He asked me about Chen Tianshu today without reasons,

Did Zhao Lanzhi make you scared?

He just asked you a question.

You're Minister of Finance. Your position is higher than him.

Why are you so worried?

Nonsense.

I think this person is strange.

What's his name?

Where does he come from?

Dad. After he came out of the basement,

he saved my life and also gave you some advice.

He helped our family so much.

Why do you keep asking since we live in peace with each other?

Does it make sense if I tell you his name?

Li Shimin, is that OK?

You are so fussy.

You can't mention late Emperor's name at your will.

Are you kidding?

Do you want to be beheaded?

I don't know who he is.

But I know he is powerful than us.

No.

I can't keep him here.

Listen!

You send him away now!

I can't get rid of him as soon as he has done his job.

You must do it!

It hurts.

It hurts.

Your Majesty.

Your Majesty.

Are you all right? Your Majesty.

You idiots!

Tell me, what did Your Majesty eat?

Why did Emperor have a headache again within the few days?

Send for the imperial doctor.

Yes.

Your Majesty.

Mei Niang.

Don't blame them.

I had a nightmare just now.

Give me the elixir State Preceptor gave me before.

I would be better if I take the elixir.

Fetch the elixir quickly!

It really hurts!

Empress, the elixir has been disposed according to your order.

Send for State Preceptor.

Yes, Your Majesty.

Your Majesty.

Your Majesty.

Your majesty hasn't had a headache for a long time.

Why did your headache recur suddenly?

State Preceptor.

To tell the truth,

I had a nightmare just now.

Guards!

Guards!

Help! Guards! Help!

Help! Help!

Help me! Guards! Help!

I think Your Majesty is always busy with state affairs.

It was caused by tension.

It was not that serious.

But I think the dream is so strange.

I think there is another story behind it.

State Preceptor, if you see through something, please say it directly.

State Preceptor, this is related to Your Majesty's health,

please feel free to speak your mind.

19 years ago, Master San Zang died.

Junior fellow Tianshu killed his fellows and committed crime of massacre.

Does Empress still remember this?

Yes, of course.

In that tragic massacre,

you protected Master San Zang's body.

Tianshu was listed as a wanted criminal by Your Majesty.

But he hasn't been arrested till today.

19 years have passed since that massacre happened.

What do you mean?

I mean Your Majesty's pain can just be eased temporarily.

That case hasn't been solved.

So there is still resentment.

The dream just reminds Your Majesty that Tianshu must be arrested

to comfort the dead.

Otherwise, Your Majesty's disease...

I see. That case must be solved.

Arrest Tianshu.

Your Majesty.

19 years have passed.

We didn't know whether he is still alive.

How can we arrest him as soon as possible?

State Preceptor, what's your opinion?

Your Majesty.

I have profound feud with Tianshu.

I have never forgotten that over the years.

I have always been trying to find him.

In recent months,

I heard some news.

What do you mean?

You mean you know where he hides?

Your Highness.

I have been tracing Tianshu at the order of State Preceptor.

Thankfully, I know where he hides now.

He's now in Luoyang

at Minister of Finance Ye Fucheng's mansion.

Ye Fucheng?

How dare he!

We don't know whether Master Ye is related to this case.

But it is his daughter who hides Tianshu.

Yuan'an?

She's so young. How can she interfere in this case?

No more questions.

Search Ye's mansion and arrest Tianshu without any delay.

If anyone wants to cover up something, then arrest him too.

Minghui, are you sure?

If Tianshu is not in Ye Fucheng's mansion,

I will accept any punishment.

However, even with Your Majesty's order,

I'm not an official or military officer, I dare not to take this responsibility.

Then who can do this?

I recommend deputy minister of Court of Judicature and Revision, Zhao Lanzhi.

OK.

Give my order.

Zhao Lanzhi shall investigate this case this very night.

If everything is verified, Tianshu must be arrested.

Yes, Your Majesty.

Keep an eye an Zhao Lanzhi.

Yes.

Her Highness commanded

that Zhao Lanzhi shall lead the troop to Ye Fucheng's mansion.

Arrest the criminal Chen Tianshu.

Sir, it's so late in the night.

Why did you bring so many people to my mansion.

Empress commanded that I arrest Chen Tianshu in your mansion.

What? Chen Tianshu?

That man turns out to be Chen Tianshu.

Sir Zhao.

I think there must be some misunderstandings.

I'm going to the imperial palace now to report to her highness.

Master Ye, I have an imperial edict with me.

Don't make things difficult for me.

Master, what's the matter?

Do they want to confiscate our property.

It must be my sister!

Yuan'an got me into troubles again.

Search the mansion.

Sir Zhao.

Sir Zhao.

Search every dark room and compartment.

Search every corner!

Besides.

Search the visiting card of every Ye's relative.

Sir Zhao.

It's late in the night.

What do you want to do in my mansion?

I reported to Master Ye just now.

I search for wanted crime Chen Tianshu at the command of Empress.

Then I think you made a trip in vain.

- I have never heard of this person. - Yuan'an.

Empress must be assured, so she asked me to arrest him.

You and I know who he is and where he hides.

Surrender Chen Tianshu.

I'll beg leniency for you before Empress.

So what? You have Empress' imperial edict.

Do as you wish.

Sir, no suspect.

No suspicious darkrooms and compartments.

There is no suspicious person on the mansion's visiting cards.

Sir, there is something suspicious in the basement.

Show me.

Yes, sir.

What is it?

The basement where I place sundries.

Open the basement.

Search it!

Zhao Lanzhi, we're good friends.

It's unnecessary to do this.

Yuan'an, I'm on duty under Your Majesty's command.

You should know that the law is ruthless.

Search!

Quickly!

What's that?

Go! quickly!

Quickly!

Sir, there is nothing in it.

There are only a few monkeys.

Where did you hide Chen Tianshu?

I have told you, Sir.

You see. I'm so sorry.

Never tell others that I raise some monkeys in the basement.

It's not so good.

Where on earth did you hide Chen Tianshu?

What are you talking about?

Sir, you brought so many people here.

You bothered us for the whole night.

It's nearly dawn.

The breakfast is going to be prepared.

Let's have breakfast together.

The steamed bun made by our chef is yummy.

Master Ye.

There is no suspect in your mansion.

That's the best result.

I will report it to Empress tomorrow.

Dispel her doubts.

OK, that's all right.

Let's go.

Dad, I'm starving.

Let's eat steamed buns.

Shut up!

Yuan'an.

Tell me the truth.

I know you still don't send him away.

There were so many soldiers last night.

Where did you hide him?

Dad.

Leave me alone.

I'm so worried. It's a big matter.

Tell me. Where did you hide him?

Have some food.

It's yummy.

I have no appetite.

Young master, this is Biluochun tea prepared for you.

Look!

Where on earth did you hide him?

What?

He's here.

Master, this is the criminal.

The soldiers didn't find him.

I thought Yuan'an had sent him away.

Well.

Master, what should we do now?

Yuan'an, you told me before

that you had sent him away.

Why did he still stay in our mansion?

The most dangerous place is the safest one.

He walked before soldiers for the whole night.

Who recognized him?

So tell me which place is safer than our mansion?

Sister, I have tolerated you for a long time.

Things become terrible.

I don't care.

I now take this old guy to Zhao Lanzhi.

Listen.

He saved my life.

What did you do? Get lost!

How dare you!

He's your little brother.

Do you want to hide him all the time?

I know.

You uphold your code of brotherhood.

But you just care about yourself.

You're so selfish.

Tell me, do you care about us?

Do you ever think of our life?

Stop! All right, I will go.

Miss, that's OK.

You have done a lot of favors for me over the years.

We're even now.

I wanna go, bye.

Let me give you a ride.

Yuan'an.

Master.

Stop!

Sir.

Who is in the carriage?

A relative of Master Ye.

Show me.

Ferry boat is coming soon.

Rowing 30 miles along this river will lead you out of Luoyang.

Got it.

There is a passport and some silver ingots in the parcel.

I can't help you with other things.

If you have nowhere to stay, you can go to Wanxing Temple

I have a good relationship with Master there.

Just tell him my name.

OK. When do you become so verbose?

I just don't believe in others but myself.

You saved me many times and helped me a lot.

You also teach me a lot.

The other day you said

that people shouldn't covet the luck of getting together.

But it happens so quickly.

All right, the affairs of the world are inconstant.

Everything in this world is destined.

We may meet with each other by chance some day.

We'll meet each other.

Stop it.

It's a shame that I haven't had a disciple till now.

Some day in the future,

if I could have a disciple like you, I would be satisfied.

Really?

Stop fleeing.

Why do you come here?

If I didn't know you, I wouldn't know you are so tricky.

And I wouldn't run after you.

You certainly hide this man in your mansion.

Where are you going now?

I came here. You must stop that!

You have recovered your Kungfu?

Empress rewarded me with medicine made from Snow Lotus Herb.

Don't you remember who saved your life?

That's quite another matter.

He saved me, so I owed to him.

But he is a wanted criminal of the imperial court.

Zhao Lanzhi, you're so heartless.

I won't let you go.

Let go of me.

Run! Quickly!

Let go of me.

No.

Chen Tianshu.

You have killed so many people.

How could you eat and sleep well over the past 19 years?

Over the past 19 years,

I never skip meals or sleep less.

Do you know the reason?

I was judged unfairly.

Well, now that you were judged unfairly,

then defend yourself at the law court.

Empress will prove your innocence.

There's no fairness in this world.

So does the past 19 years.

How does fairness exist today?

Blood.

Zhao Lanzhi, you beat me.

It's bleeding.

That sucks.

It hurts! I can't get up.

Come on.

All right. Don't cry.

You're so stubborn.

Have you heard the expression "behave yourself"?

What if he was unjustly trialed?

That's absurd!

Please.

Please let him go.

I also want to let go of him.

But if...

Well.

Yuan'an is right. I owe you a life.

I pretend not to see you today.

All right.

Miss.

I remember your brotherhood.

See you again if we are lucky.

You see that.

He can do it without a boat.

So If you want to fight against him, you would lose.

I knew it.

If so, I still want to try.

Yuan'an.

I hope you can understand that I do this just for you.

I'm not a heartless and cruel person in your mind.

You see. I didn't bring a single soldier here.

You are not stupid.

I'm not the person like you.

What are you gonna do?

I'll report to Empress and tell her I didn't find Chen Tianshu at Ye's mansion.

You will tell a lie.

This is the ultimate lese-majeste.

I'm sorry.

Your Highness.

I have searched every inch of Minister of Finance Ye's mansion.

But I didn't find any traces of Chen Tianshu.

It seems that we mistaken Yuan'an on this matter.

I felt strange about this.

Why does Ye's daughter hide Chen Tianshu?

Your Highness, Princess Minghui wants to greet you.

A good timing. Let her in.

Your Highness.

Minghui, I'm going to ask you some questions.

I have ordered Zhao Lanzhi to search Ye's mansion.

But he didn't find the evil monk Chen Tianshu.

What do you think then?

Empress, I just come here for this.

The truth is opposite to what Sir Zhao said.

Go ahead.

Sir Zhao searched Ye's mansion at your command.

But he was almost there.

I designated someone to supervise Miss Ye Yuan'an.

Until the late midnight,

he saw a carriage driving out from the back door of Ye's mansion.

I think Chen Tianshu was sent away by Ye Yuan'an.

So Sir Zhao and soldiers didn't find evil monk at the mansion.

Princess, don't talk nonsense.

Sir Zhao.

I just tell the truth.

You may leave out some details when handling the case.

I just add more details.

Don't you agree with what I said?

Or you just hide something?

No.

If so, what's your plan for this case?

Your Highness.

This is related to Emperor's health

and the massacre which happened 19 years ago.

Ye Yuan'an hid evil monk Chen Tianshu,

so only she knows the whereabouts of him.

I think we should imprison Ye Yuan'an at Ministry of Penalty.

We can let her tell the truth by torturing during interrogation.

What if you're wrong?

I guarantee that with my head. It won't be wrong.

Well, Minghui.

I give you one more time.

You can handle this case.

Princess, you frame up Ye Yuan'an again and again.

What do you want?

Sir Zhao.

I don't understand what you are talking about.

I didn't frame up Ye Yuan'an.

I just told the truth.

As deputy minister of Court of Judicature and Revision,

you didn't handle things fairly.

You were lying just now.

Ye Yuan'an didn't send Chen Tianshu in the late night.

Yes, not in the night, but at daytime.

She set free Chen Tianshu just under your nose.

I mistook the time.

But you released the suspect.

That is a lese-majeste.

I was talking about her instead of you just now.

How would you like to thank me?

You followed me.

Yes, right.

Why?

You ask me why?

You bent the law for the benefit of your friend.

Why did you ask me that?

Don't get in my way.

Princess.

If anything bad happen to Yuan'an,

then don't blame me for being ruthless.

Sir Zhao.

Behave yourself.

What are you doing here?

You didn't report that you hid evil monk Chen Tianshu.

I'm here to arrest you.

The mansion has been searched.

Why are you still bothering me?

Dad, she's finding fault with us.

I knew you were a bad person.

Arrest me? How dare you!

Take care!

- Yuan'an. - Miss.

Tie up the suspect Ye Yuan'an and arrest her.

Wait.

Princess, where are you going to take her?

The prison of Ministry of Penalty.

Princess, please.

Please don't torture her.

Master Ye.

If your daughter is found guilty, then you seek blessings for yourself.

Don't worry about her.

Let's go.

Young master.

- Young master. - Yuan'an.

- Yuan'an. - Dad.

What should we do now? Master.

Dad, will we be implicated in sister's crime?

Master!

- Dad! - Master.

Send for the doctor!

- Quickly! Send for the doctor! - Yes!

- Master! - Dad!

Wait, Sir Zhao.

This is the prison of Ministry of Penalty.

Any entrance or exit must be approved by the official document.

Do you have it?

I...

I don't have it.

Then leave here sir.

Listen.

I have a good idea.

You cooperate with me and tell me directly

where you hid old monk Tianshu.

Well, I don't think it is a good idea.

Besides, I don't know what you are talking about.

If you don't agree, I will try this scalding iron on you.

I'm merciful, so I just have a try on you.

Sounds great.

I just want a tattoo recently.

so just do me a favor.

I'm afraid my father would scold me.

You want to leave a scar on me.

I can tell my father frankly.

Who tells you I will scald your body?

I'll put it into your mouth!

Make you swallow it.

Don't you remember? Ye Yuan'an.

How did you put dirty food in my mouth at Huodu Hill.

So I treated you like this.

This is called an eye for an eye.

Say it or not?

OK, I'll tell you.

Say it!

- I admit that you are more beautiful and pretty than me. - Open your mouth!

- Your eyes are bigger. - Stop!

Zhao Lanzhi, how could you come in here?

Princess Minghui, I have something to say.

That's OK.

You two can talk in front of me.

Why are you talking in secret?

Is it shameful?

Come back, Zhao Lanzhi.

Sir, I'm very busy.

What do you want to say?

I want to ask for a favor.

What do I owe to you?

At Huodu Hill, I took poisonous darts for you.

So could you please not torture Yuan'an during interrogation?

You were willing to take poisonous darts for me.

I didn't owe you.

Sir Zhao. I just do this under imperial edict.

Please don't blend official business with private ones.

I think I have already told you clearly.

What can make you let her go?

Sir Zhao I think there are some misunderstandings.

I just do what I should do.

I'm not targeting at Yuan'an. Please go back.

Yes.

You are honorable Princess and relative of the imperial family.

I'm not in a position to negotiate with you.

So I kneel down to beg to you.

Please give her a way out.

You are willing to kneel for her?

Why are you so obsessed with her that you even kneel for her?

Tell me!

In other people's eyes, she may not be good enough.

But she's Yuan'an.
