All language subtitles for 11. Power BI Demo Inserting Text Cards

All of the demos that we just walk through with cards multi-role cards and KPI cards were based on quantitative

or numerical values revenue orders returns the cards can actually serve another important purpose and

that's to visualize text based fields.

So to show you how that works let's go ahead and grab the standard card and now instead of pulling a

numerical column or measure into our Field's option here I'm going to grab it.

Text based field from our Product table.

In this case I want the product name and drag it in.

So you see that it automatically populates a value all purpose bike stand.

And it says this is the first product name.

So what exactly does that mean and why did it choose all purpose bike stand to visualize here because

we haven't really given it any context or any conditions to work from.

So in the fields list you see this little drop down and it gives me options here first last distinct

count or count since that's really all I can do with text fields.

I can't see them or average them or do any other sort of aggregation to them.

So it's defaulting to first which you may have realized by now that's first alphabetically.

So if we change it to last you'll see women's tights small.

Now neither last nor first is very helpful in this case because you know what's the point of a card

and a dashboard that just simply returns the first product name alphabetically right.

So this is where our filters are going to come into play.

And specifically that top end filter that we hinted at earlier in the section.

So if we take a look at our filters pane here you'll see by default it's dragged a copy of our first

product name field here in the visual level filters but we don't have all of the options that we need

here.

All we have is a contains filter here which is going to really do the trick.

So what we can do is actually grab another instance of product name and drag it underneath and that

will give us access to the additional filtering options advanced filtering and the top and filtering.

So in this case what we're looking for is top end.

And that way we can define which item is returned.

Based on some numerical field.

So one thing that I think might be helpful for us to show in this report for Adventure Works is the

top product in terms of order quantity and perhaps also the top product in terms of revenue or profit.

So that's pretty simple when you're able to use these top end filters we can say show the top 1 item

by a certain value and let's start with our sales table.

Let's make this one the top product by order quantity.

So grab total orders drag it in and apply then we get water bottle 30 ounce water bottle.

And in our matrix here we already have the view set up to show products ranked by total orders and that

is indeed the top item on the list.

And this just like any other visual will change dynamically.

As you adjust different filters in the report.

So now are filtered on bikes.

The top selling or top ordered bike is the mountain 200 black size 46.

So pretty helpful to have that text in say held here in the car visual.

Now couple of formatting tweaks I'd like to make.

We don't need the category label.

It says first product name we could customize that but rather than use category labels.

Let's actually turn on the title and we can give this a title like top product.

And then in parentheses

orders out pops it in right there.

Let's make that pop a little bit more kind of using a similar theme that we use with our bar charts

on the left Mills center here.

Maybe bump it up to size 9 or 10 and that's good for the title.

And we give it a little bit of a background so that it doesn't completely blend into the page in kind

of a light yellow shade here and then last thing if we wanted to change the actual data label itself

maybe the font may make it a little bit bold.

Something like that looks nice.

So top product based on orders is that 30 ounce waterbottle and Alex.

Copy that paste another one.

And all we're going to do here is instead of filtering top one product by orders this time why don't

we show the top product by profit.

You swap it in and apply it into our formatting and just tweak that title so that instead of saying

orders we say profit.

There we go.

Top product based on orders top product based on profit and we can align these.

Speaking of alignment.

One thing I forgot to mention that can be really helpful for formatting and tweaking and polish these

charts and graphs and tables these work just like any other object in many other tools where you can

control click to select multiple ones and from your formatting tab here you have options that you'd

see in tools like PowerPoint where you can align things.

In this case I just aligned all those shapes along this left edge.

You can bring things forward push them back.

Really helpful tools just to get that Polish just right.

And it's as simple as that.
