Has been calling this place home
for 85 years.

There’s a lot of tradition,

a lot of history,
and a lot of memories.

Del Orbe:
I met my husband there.

I named one of the tables
at my wedding "Yankee Stadium."

Jadakiss: Walking through
that long tunnel,

that bridgeway they had,

is just something
that you can’t experience

watching it on TV.

Rendino:
We walk to the stadium.

You see this big
concrete building

in the middle
of the South Bronx.

And then as you walk
through the tunnel,

you see the lights, the grass,

and you hear
the roar of the crowd,

and the hair on the back
of your neck stands up.

Jeter: Now, the great thing
about memories is you’re able

to pass it along
from generation to generation.

[ Crowd cheering ]

Felt like the people
were right on top of you.

It’s as loud as any stadium
that I’ve ever played in.

For some teams,
it was intimidating.

And you had a lot of players

that did not want to come
to old Yankee Stadium

because the fans
made you uncomfortable.

Pettitte: Just the grit and the
grime of it, the smell of it.

There was a different feel
about the old stadium.

It was awesome.

Kay: It’s not, like,
in some suburb off a highway.

It’s smack dab in the middle
of the neighborhood

on 161st and River.

The people of the neighborhood

where Yankee Stadium
is actually located,

they take great civic pride
in the fact that it’s there.

I knew there was a game
every night

when the sky would light up,

and we wouldn’t miss a Bat Day
for nothing

when they give you a free bet.

Truth be told, you know
the thugs was waiting around

to rob you for your bat.

So it was like a mission
to get back home

with that brand-new bat.

And although things
are going to change next year,

we’re gonna move
across the street,

there are a few things
with the New York Yankees

that never change.

That’s pride. It’s tradition.

I grew up within walking
distance of Yankee Stadium

in a five-story walkup building.

In each apartment,
there was somebody

from a different ethnic group
that was living there.

We celebrated
each other’s holidays.

We exchanged each other’s foods.

The thing about the Bronx,
it’s a very specific borough.

You can move to Brooklyn
from anywhere,

and you can eventually
become a Brooklyn person.

You can’t just move to the Bronx
and one day say,

"I’m from the Bronx."
"Yo, I’m from the Bronx."

Nah.
No, people in the Bronx
are gonna be like,

"No, you are not!"
"No, you’re not!"

Kay: People in the Bronx
are tough people.

They take the slings and arrows

of what life
is gonna throw at them,

and they make it work,
they make it happen.

And I’m proud
to be from the Bronx.

And we are --
We’re relying on you

to take the memories
from this stadium,

add them to the new memories
that are coming

to new Yankee Stadium

and continue to pass them on
from generation to generation.

the entire organization,

we just want to take this moment

Jeter: The last year
of old Yankee Stadium,

We all wanted to go out
with a bang,

but it didn’t happen.

It was an odd feeling
not going to the postseason.

Going into the next season,

you wanted to prove
that it was a fluke.

And hopefully this year
it can end up

a little bit different
than it did the last year.

-It’s been a while.
-Yeah. Thanks for reminding me.

I think everybody knows
it’s been a while.

It seemed like forever

since we were
in the World Series.

We were in the World Series
in 2003.

I understand. Six years.

But when you have the standard
of its championship or failure,

which is the standard I had,
it seemed like forever.

Announcer: Diving stop!
Erstad. Underhand to Frankie.

They got him!
The series is over!

Cashman: From that period
of ’05, ’06, ’07,

chemistry wasn’t meshing.

For whatever reason,
there was a lot of talent,

but it was almost like
the new players coming in

that hadn’t been part
of the championships,

they were separated
from the old players

that were part
of the championships.

Announcer: Tigers have
eliminated the Yankees!

Girardi:
The older guys who were there,

they were used to
winning World Series.

And when you have a guy
like Derek Jeter on your team,

unless you win the World Series,
he is not going to be happy.

I think people felt
that expectation

when they came in the clubhouse,

and maybe that rubbed
some people the wrong way.

Olney: I spoke with players
on the Yankees,

and they did feel like
that there was a breach.

They felt that regardless
of whether it was verbalized

or whether it was implied
that they could never live up

to the standards of the dynasty
team and the dynasty players.

Oh, it’s real.
You know you’re an outsider.

Well, at least
I could say for me.

I just felt that way
the whole time I was there.

Let’s face it. With Derek as
the captain of the team,

that’s directly
an indictment of him.

Sometimes you lose
because there are better teams,

and it’s not necessarily
something to do with leadership.

But I’m fine with criticism.

And, yeah, I’m pretty sure

there’s things
throughout my career,

looking back, maybe I would
have handled differently.

I probably could have spent

more time with teammates
away from the field,

but I didn’t because
I hung out with people

who I was comfortable with.

I hung out with people
I knew I could trust.

And I probably should have been
more trusting

to some of my teammates.

Yankees finally pulled
a big catch out of the oven.

Yeah. $161 million.

That’s what the Yankees
will be paying CC Sabathia.

Announcer: He got him.
What a pitch.

Cashman: He was this
tremendously talented player,

but he’s supposed to be an
amazing person at the same time.

He was known for bonding
with his teammates,

so he kind of represented

everything we probably needed
at that moment.

For me, I was thinking,
"There ain’t no way

I’m signing with New York,
so don’t even worry about it."

Like, how am I gonna
change your culture?

You know what I’m saying?
But Cashman was like,

"I’ve watched what you’ve done
with your teammates

and, you know, going out to eat
and doing these different things

and organizing
all this different stuff.

I feel like
that can work for us."

And it just kind of made sense.
It all kind of fell into place.

Kay: Are you the nicest guy
in the world?

[ Laughs ] I don’t think
I’m the nicest guy in the world.

But, you know, I mean, I feel
like I’m a pretty good guy.

[ Laughter ]

And the best thing
that happened, too,

was Derek called me and
was like, "Just be yourself."

And that conversation,
you know, for me, it was like,

"Alright. You know, here I am."

I’m as excited about this season
as any season I’ve been in

because we’ve made
a lot of great additions.

The Yankees do
what they usually do.

They plug their holes
with money.

So they decide to spend

about a half a billion dollars
on players.

They brought in Nick Swisher,

a guy who marches
to his own drum.

A. J. Burnett
showed to be a crazy guy

during his Yankee tenure.

Mark Teixeira is the guy
most likely to have

a butler in his house.

Alright? [ Laughs ]
He’s a really straitlaced dude.

Hoch: And you could just tell
there was urgency there.

The Yankees were opening
this new building.

They wanted a team
that could win.

The vibe heading
into that 2009 season was

"the Yankees are back."

I was young.
I was stupid. I was naive.

A whirlwind 48 hours
in the life of Alex Rodriguez,

culminating today
in the startling admission

did use

My reaction was,

We gotta deal with this now."

That was my reaction.

Like everyone else, I’ve made
a lot of mistakes in my life.

Let me start by thanking
the Yankees, my teammates.

The fact that you’re
sitting here with me today

means the world to me.

I didn’t want to be there.

I don’t think
anyone wanted to be here.

I’m sure he didn’t want to be
there. You know what I mean?

We got to answer questions
about it, man.

And I did not like
to answer questions

that didn’t have to do with

I was listening.
I really wasn’t --

See, my job isn’t to

I was like, "I don’t want to

But it wasn’t something that

I think is most irritating.

It’s frustrating
when you listen to people say,

"It was the steroid era.
Everybody was doing it."

That’s not true.

I work my ass off, and there’s
a lot of people that have.

I wanted to be clear
and make sure people knew --

in my own way.

I mean,
you don’t have to grandstand.

"Hey, guys, I didn’t do it."

Carig: Crazy expectations,
new players.

And A-Rod was like, you know --

seemed to, like,
suck all the oxygen

out of it by just being A-Rod.

I remember like,
"Damn. Is this --

Like, my seven years, we’re
gonna be doing this shit?"

I’m like,
"This is the first week!"

Jeter:
It dragged on for a while,

but my mind goes, "We got to
deal with it and let’s move on."

Jeter: 2009, you have all type
of leaders on the team.

It’s a winning approach
that brings the chemistry.

Sabathia: I remember
just feeling like,

"Fuck. We gonna win
the World Series.

Like, this --- It’s over."

Carig: I think Derek had
one of his best seasons.

I mean, he was just good
the whole year, start to finish.

The balls he got to, he never
made errors, it felt like.

I remember thinking. "Wait.
I thought he sucked there."

I can say without question

that the ’09 season
was the happiest I saw Derek.

For 72 years,

the Yankees’
all-time hits leader.

With CC, A. J., and Swish,

those three guys injected
some serious personality

into that team, and you saw them
slapping each other

in the face with pies
after walk-off wins.

as Hideki Matsui gets smushed.

Feinsand:
I give Derek some credit.

He let them be themselves.

Ohh!

Girardi: And I think that’s
what makes a clubhouse work.

And Derek’s leadership
on how to play the game

and the way to prepare,
the other guys fed off of that.

We were on the exact same page
when it came to winning.

Announcer: Certainly
the New York Yankees are playing

with an awful lot
of expectations.

They spent a ton of money
this offseason.

And CC Sabathia,
tonight’s Yankees starter,

knows the burden
of those Yankee expectations.

Sabathia: I come into
the postseason of ’09.

I’m like, "I got to go out.
I got to throw the shutout.

Got to do whatever."
And I give up those two runs.

And Mauer, in between,
hesitates,

now comes home
and slides in under the tag.

I come back
and sit on the bench.

And I’m sitting next to Jeter.
He was like, "You alright?"

I must have looked weird because
I must have not been alright

for the room to ask me
if I was alright.

And I was like,
"Yeah, I’m fine, I’m fine.
I’ll get into the game."

He was like, "No, I got you."

And a high fly ball

the left-field line!

A long home run
deep into the New York night

for Derek Jeter.

And it ties the game
in the third.

Sabathia:
When he hit that home run,

like, a knot in my stomach
just released.

And I was like, "These guys
have been there before.

Jete’s got four rings already."
You know what I’m saying?

Like, "They’re gonna
lead you there."

Rodriguez:
Mariano had four championships,

and Derek and Pettitte
and Posada.

It definitely drove me
and inspired me.

Obviously, I wanted
a championship very bad,

Announcer: An unbelievably
dramatic 2-run home run.

Sabathia:
I think we were all wanting

that last one
for the core four,

but wanting that,
first of all, for us.

Announcer:
The Yankees are moving on

to the American League
Championship Series

for the first time since 2004.

Hoch:
There were a lot of whispers

that Derek and the core four

were getting a little too long
in the tooth

and they can’t really do it

and they’re not the same team
as the dynasty years.

And they went out to prove

they still had the ability
to be on top.

Announcer: Back off the pitcher.
Pettitte knocks it down.

And throws him out.

And here’s the payoff.

but they take on
a terrific Philadelphia club,

our job was finished.

One championship was great.

But I wanted
to play the Yankees.

And the Yankees lead
in the ninth.

Alex was a force
that postseason.

He’s a big reason we won.

We needed each other
for him to win five

and for me to win one.

Announcer:
And the Yankees are one win away

from a World Series
championship.

Jeter: I would say 2009

was more of a relief
because it had been --

I sound funny saying it --
so long.

Right? But, you know.

It’s been too long, hasn’t it?

It feels good to be back.
Thank you.

It felt really, really good.

But we won five championships.

But I think about the years
we should have won.

I still think about those years
we should have won.

Arizona, we should have won.
The Marlins, we should have won.

And Boston, we should have won.

I felt -- See, but then
I sound like a loser, you know?

I wish I didn’t think that way.
Like, really, I wish I didn’t.

I wish I would have had
a better appreciation

for things that happened
in my career

and moments in my career
while I was going through it.

But it was, "What’s next?"

this sport’s brightest stars,
baseball lost a true legend.

George Steinbrenner passed away
earlier today at the age of 80.

Jeter: The Boss was outspoken.
He was front and center.

He was noisy.
In a good way, you know?

He kept you on your toes.
He would challenge you.

He would call you out.
He would embarrass you.

And if you backed down from him,

I don’t think
he would respect you.

He’s the reason why I was able

to play 20 years
for the Yankees.

He was definitely tough.
Expectations were high.

But in the end, I think
it made me a better person.

Jeter: You couldn’t think of
a better person to take over

after the Boss than Hal.

Hal’s a little bit
more reserved.

But they have
the same mentality.

You know, Hal’s expectation
levels are the same.

But at the time, we didn’t know
how things were going to change,

because early on in my career,

we knew who was
calling all the shots.

Cashman: George Steinbrenner
was like a second father to me.

I was nobody,
and if I’m somebody today,

it’s because he,
for whatever reason --

he handpicked me, gave me
an opportunity, moved me along.

And for that,
I’ll always be grateful.

Brian Cashman
is the one constant

who’s still with the Yankees
since 1998.

Announcer: Swing and a miss.
He got him on a breaking ball.

Jeter down on strikes.

2010. Had a bad year.

Think I hit about .270.

Everybody knew
that his contract was up,

and he’s now 36.

Announcer: The Texas Rangers
are American League champions!

Derek has been and will be

an important part
of this organization,

so how it gets defined
in this new negotiation

is yet to be determined.

When you’re dealing with money
and perceived worth,

it’s never an easy dance.

He’s one of the all-time
great players,

but you’re still having to
put a number on somebody

based on their
more recent performance.

Close: Derek is so much more
to the New York Yankees

than just exactly what he did
in that moment, in that season.

Their look
at what that value was

and our understanding
were just two different things.

Steinbrenner: I absolutely
try to keep any emotions,

any subjectivity
out of those type of things,

because that can affect
your decision-making.

Me and my agent, Casey,

went to
Hal Steinbrenner’s house,

and it was Hal and Cashman
and Randy Levine.

And I said,
"Look, Hal, I want to tell you,

you know,
this is where I want to be.

I don’t want to go anywhere.

I’ve told Casey,
’If any other team calls,

tell them I’m not interested,’

because this is where
I want to be."

And I said, "The only thing that
I ask is that it stays private."

Reporter: The Yankees are
entrenched in their reported

three-year, $45-million offer
to Derek Jeter.

Reporter #2: The negotiations
with the Yankees

are playing out quite publicly.

It’s kind of
an odd thing to witness.

What initially upset me

had nothing to do
with what contract

they thought I was worth.

It was the fact that I said
I want to keep it private,

and a couple of days later,
it became public.

Steinbrenner:
I felt the same way he did.

These are
behind-closed-door things

that shouldn’t have got
to the place it got, no doubt.

Cashman: How are we now
in a public arena on this?

And so, like anything else,

you try to navigate things
the best way possible.

And I wish we didn’t
have to deal with that stuff,

but it comes with the --
with the program sometimes.

It’s certainly not something

that the New York Yankees
wanted, not something I wanted.

Matthews:
Cashman said if Derek wants

to be paid as a great Yankee,
he should go test the market.

"Go see if anybody else
will give you that
and then come back to me."

I was already pissed off
at the fact

that this had become public.

Now Cash is challenging me
to find another offer.

Cashman: The offer we conveyed
was something that we felt

was above and beyond

to try to check
all the boxes of respect.

And so my response was,

"If you think you can beat it,
you should shop it."

Whether there was going to be
a better offer out there

or not, you know,
we would find out.

That’s the art
of the negotiation, right?

Brian Cashman says,
"Well, he should drink
the reality potion,"

which, you know,
was just an amazing quote.

And I know for a fact

that it stung Derek
a little bit.

Murti: This was supposed to be
the easiest negotiation ever,

but somehow
you’ve gotten past Thanksgiving

and Derek Jeter’s
still not a Yankee.

Seemed a little unbelievable.

Cashman:
We have a powwow in Tampa.

You know, there’s now blood
on both sides bleeding out.

Jeter:
The second meeting that I had,

Cash is going
back and forth about,

I don’t deserve this
or I don’t deserve that.

And I said to him, I said,

"Well, tell me
who you’d rather have."

I had no interest

in having the conversation
that he asked to have,

so I usually answer
the question,

"Do you really want me
to answer that?"

But he asked the question,
and I, you know --

I was charged with answering it
because he wanted an answer,

and so I did.

I rattled off Troy Tulowitzki
and Hanley Ramirez,

the top two best shortstops
in baseball at the time,

because at this stage,
Derek wasn’t

in the top echelon of shortstops
in the game anymore.

Jeter:
That’s not the name I heard.

But he said Hanley Ramirez.

I didn’t think Cash
would answer the question,

but he answered the question.

And when you have someone
that’s your boss

tell you that they’d
rather have somebody,

you never forget the name
that comes out of their mouth.

And I said, "I’m not gonna sit
here and listen to this shit."

Close: After that meeting,
we walked away saying,

"I don’t know where this goes."

There was that moment in time

if cooler heads don’t prevail,
he might be gone.

Steinbrenner:
That was a concern.

Obviously, in his case,
he’s beloved,

and our fans expected us
to get a deal done.

I think we allowed a little time
to go off from there.

We kind of got back on track
with the negotiation.

You just kind of sometimes have
to take the air out of the room

and not have it be
so contentious.

There seemed to be no other
genuine option for either side.

Derek Jeter and the Yankees
needed each other.

And now sources say they’ve
agreed on a new contract.

Jeter reportedly gets
three years, $51 million.

Murti: The numbers
were reasonable for a player

who you weren’t sure
was going to be the same player

by the time you got to the end
of those three years.

Yeah, I never wanted
to be a free agent.

You know, it’s the situation
that I was in.

And -- But, yeah,
I’d be lying to you

if I said I wasn’t angry
at how some of this went.

Close: I was happy
that he expressed his feelings.

I think he had compartmentalized

a lot of those feelings
through the years

because he felt like that
wasn’t the right thing to do

as the captain of the Yankees.

It was not
an enjoyable experience

because I’ve -- I’ve --
You know, throughout the years,

I’ve prided myself
on keeping things

out of the papers
and out of the media.

And this turned into a big
public thing, so that was...

It changed my feelings
on the front office.

I knew now you’re able
to just throw me out, right?

You’re able to not treat me
with the respect

that I’ve shown you
throughout my entire career.

It’s not a two-way street.

It was a reminder
that it’s a business.

Now, I didn’t want to have
many conversations with Cash.

I didn’t.

Didn’t really want
to speak to him

because I had lost that trust.

Never said anything bad
about him,

but I didn’t want to see him.

And my whole mind-set
from that point forward,

on myself to do it at home.

of what I was trying to do.

I had really never seen
Derek struggle, ever.

And it was the one time
I felt he was pressing.

Jeter’s pursuit will have
to wait at least one more day.

Kay:
I was a little nervous

because after the Yankees’
homestand,

there was a road trip coming up.

I said, "Man,

I really felt if I didn’t
get it on that particular day,

I just was not gonna
get it at home.

It was relief.

You know, it was relief.

You know, coming in,
I’ve been lying to you guys

for a long time,
saying I wasn’t nervous

and there was no pressure.

I felt a lot of pressure to do
it here while we’re at home.

And so I have been lying to you
for quite some time.

[ Chuckles ]

I did think that the relief
from him was palpable

when it was over.

He had done it.
He could exhale a little bit.

I had a lot going on.

And then...

Hannah: I grew up
in the Virgin Islands.

You know, it was just a very,
like, intimate upbringing

with your friends
really being your family.

I started modeling
when I was 14.

My parents really
supported my dream.

The night we met,
I was actually with my mom.

I decided to take her out
to dinner

with one of my best friends,
Maxwell.

There was an event
at the restaurant,

and I just so happened
to be sitting next to her mom.

So, I met her mom first.

There was a connection
from the very beginning,

even though he was mostly
talking to my mom.

But there was that connection,

and I felt like,

"He’s so mysterious,
I want to know more."

I thought she was with someone
at the time.

I remember going to the bathroom
with my mom

and telling her, like

[whispering] "I need
to make sure he knows

I’m not with my friend."

You know what I mean?
Because I’m single.

Like, I am single.

She’d mention stuff like,
"Oh, you know, Hannah,

how difficult is it being single

in New York?"
and all this other stuff.

I just remember feeling like
I was dying inside.

"Like, I hope he didn’t
just hear that

because I don’t want
to sound desperate, but --"

I had touched base with
a friend of mine that knew her,

and we ended up
meeting up a few days later.

I spent a lot of time
getting to know her,

spent a lot of time
with family and friends.

It doesn’t take long to know
how special she is.

She would do anything for anyone
at any time.

But if you know anything
about Derek,

that’s the mirror image.

She reminded me a lot of Derek,

like, didn’t want the attention,

didn’t want the --

like, was fine being
behind the, you know, scenes.

And she had a successful career
in her own right.

She didn’t even know
what he did at the time.

She -- She had no clue.

I was in a totally
different business.

I recognized him,

but I didn’t know his name.

When he stepped away,
one of my friends told me,

and I was like,
"I lived in New York in 2009.

"How the hell did I not see

"the float
and the whole parade going on?

"Like, where was I liv--

Like, how do I not
remember this?"

Hannah doesn’t like watching
the highlights of my career.

Did she share that
with you guys, too?

We were, like, on the DL
as long as possible.

I always tried to protect
our relationship, you know?

So I always tried
to keep it out of spotlight.

I always tried to keep it
out of the papers.

’Cause how the hell do you get
to know each other

when you’re out and about

and getting your picture taken
and all that crap?

You know, it’s just --
You can’t do it.

But I think it has to be
the right time in your life,

not just for me,
but for her as well.

And, you know,
I had to get through my career

because, you know,
I was very selfish

when it came to me
and my career.

That was number one.

That’s not always fair

to your significant other.

The hardest time
in our relationship

was when he played
for the Yankees.

He was so hyper-focused
on baseball,

and so he wasn’t really
emotionally available to anyone.

It’s like, it doesn’t matter
if you’ve got a new girlfriend.

[ Laughs ]

He wasn’t right.

I actually jumped up

and hit home plate
and screwed up my heel.

So, if you go to
the games later on,

I’m limping the whole rest
of the World Series

’cause I screwed my heel up.

Verducci: I remember asking him
years later, like,

"Were you really hurt, you know,
couldn’t get to that ball?"

He said, "I was alright."

And that was the way
Derek played.

All I kept thinking about was,

He would have got up and played
even if his leg was hanging off,

but he knew
there was something wrong.

Waldman: I went downstairs
’cause I was getting information

and I was ready to go on,
like, post-game.

And I had known Dorothy Jeter.

You know, we weren’t friends,
but I always liked her.

And I had tears
coming down my face.

And I said, "Oh, I’m so sorry.

This is awful."
And she said, "Stop it.

Stop it right now."

And I said, "Yeah?"

She said, "He’s gonna be fine.
This is okay.

"Now, I want you to go
back on that radio

and I want to hear
that smile in your voice."

And I went, "Okay."

That’s that family.

I was at the game,

and I had to go down

and see him and be with him

just to let him know
I cared about him.

You know, we didn’t talk about
whether it was the end,

but we did
talk about the future.

And their worst fears
were confirmed.

He has a fractured left ankle,

and he is out
for the rest of the postseason.

Sabathia:
It’s a rap now, like, because,

you know, if he can’t go,
it’s over.

Announcer: Here is the 1-2.

Infante throws to first
in time.

Ballgame over. Tigers win.

That was as much air

that I’ve ever felt
let out of a clubhouse

in all the years
that I’ve been in a clubhouse.

And it was just like someone

had put thousands of pounds
on our shoulders

because we knew what he meant.

When you take away the heart
of any kind of being,

it’s gonna end up dying.

And they weren’t gonna win
any playoff series without him.

Announcer:
This is gonna do it.

Prince Fielder wants it.

The Tigers are going
to the World Series.

Yeah, that felt like
the end of something.

Kay: Derek, When you’re being
taken off the field

in that playoff game
and you know the season is over

and you know how long
you’ve played in this game,

do you allow yourself to think
about life after baseball?

Did that creep in at all?

Jeter:
No, no, not at all.

And we still got a long ways
to go before the season starts,

but I’ll be ready.

When he broke his ankle,
it was an absolute --

excuse my language --
fucking disaster.

He had that mentality of, like,

"I’m just gonna rehab it.
I’m gonna be back."

Tough-guy mentality, you know,
in front of his coaches,

teammates, you know,
because that was his plan.

But at home, man,
he was miserable.

I was miserable.

And, um...

I mean, there’s only so many
years you have in your career,

and you run out of time.

And I was 38 at the time.

Yeah. So, it was a dark time.

So, I remember them giving him
a scooter.

He hated the scooter.

He was -- He actually fell off
the scooter one time.

He tripped on a rug
in our house.

Yeah, she’s sharing
a little too much, man.

How the -- Yeah.

Sorry. I tried to erase that
from my memory.

[ Laughs ]

That off-season was the worst.

Jeter:
We’re at a hotel in Miami,

and I remember being at
a restaurant, eating breakfast.

And then someone showed me
the article --

"Derek Eater."

They made my shirt bigger
and my shorts bigger

and made me look like
I was, like, 300 pounds.

Man, I had pancakes.
I had everything. Bacon.

I’m ready. I got eggs.
I’m good.

And then I see this story.

The first thing I do
is push it aside.

I’m like, "Damn,
people think I’m huge now."

I mean, this is just...

I need him to be healthy

because he is not a guy that
likes to be down and out, man.

So, sort of like,
do whatever you can.

Put a Band-Aid on it,
and let’s go.

[ Laughs ]

I think it was
a little bit of a mind fuck.

Like, he knew, like, "Things
aren’t working the same.

And I’m trying to
finish up this career."

I pushed myself, pushed myself.

I wasn’t healthy.

Broke it again,

kept pushing myself,

and had a bunch of leg problems
in 2013.

I got shut down for the rest
of the year,

And I said, "You know,
my career could be over."

Olney: Babe Ruth finishes his
career with the Boston Braves.

Joe DiMaggio is basically
shoved out

by the emergence
of Mickey Mantle.

Mickey Mantle’s career
ends in spring training.

If you look at the history
of the Yankees,

it’s absolutely cold-blooded

when it comes
to handling aging stars.

For me, in 2011,
they didn’t want me around.

There was no 2012 for me.

You know, I felt like
I was pushed out.

Feinsand: Bernie Williams
was the cleanup hitter

for the Yankees dynasty team,

but by the 2005 season,

it was very clear Bernie
was being phased out.

And after Bernie’s final year,

Bernie wanted
to come back again.

And the Yankees said no.

There’s no such thing as loyalty

and trying to do the right thing
for a player that is aging.

You are gonna be in the game
as long as you produce.

But the first thing that comes
to mind is that everything bad

that happens to the player,
as far as their production,

it’s not that they’re making
mistakes because they’re human.

They’re making mistakes
because they’re old.

Jeter: Back then,
I thought that as players

they didn’t appreciate what
we’ve done for the organization.

A lot of us
were somewhat forced out.

That’s how we felt
as players back then.

Cashman: There is a separation
between church and state.

And that doesn’t mean you
can’t have good relationships,

doesn’t mean you can’t care
for them and their families.

But at the same time,

there’s gonna be some conflicts
that occur,

and you can’t have
that emotional arena

blurred because of it.

2013 is a wash.

I mean, I played for two weeks.

So you can’t even count 2013,

In my mind, it’s 2012
to now it’s going to 2014.

So, in my mind, I’m getting back
to where I was in 2012,

you know, 200-some hits.

I’m ready to go. Um...

And then it just took
so much energy in rehab

that it started to feel like --

for the first time,
it felt like a job, you know?

It really felt like a job.

And I always said
if it felt like a job,

it’d be time for me
to hang them up.

We had a real conversation

about what life was gonna
look like after his career.

And he talked to me about,

"I’m ready to get off
this crazy schedule

and timeline and things."

So I think he was ready.

Jeter:
I told Suzyn Waldman --

I think it was maybe
when Bernie retired.

I said,
"Suzyn, I’ll tell you first.

When I’m gonna retire, you’ll
be the first one I let know."

So I called her,
left her a message.

She didn’t pick up.

I was out with the dogs.

I was just outside playing
with my German Shepherds.

"Suzyn, it’s Derek Jeter.

I told you that I’d tell you
first when I’m retiring.

Well, it’s happening.
I didn’t tell Hal yet."

He called me, but --
but, you know,

back in -- back in those days,

there was a lot of, you know,
numbers I didn’t recognize.

So I didn’t recognize
the number.

And then I got --
I got caught up in something

and completely forgot
to check the voicemail.

Didn’t get back to him
till the next day.

Why didn’t I save that message?
How dumb am I?

He’s under "Jeter" now
on my phone.

There’s -- There’s --

There’ll be no more --
no more of that.

Man: Derek Jeter announcing

that 2014 will be
his final season in baseball.

I thought that was the most
efficient way to do it,

you know, and I could do it
in my own words.

Case study
in how to do it right.

He saw that probably they were
gonna try to treat him

probably the same way
that they treated me.

Derek sort of foresaw that,
and he said,

"I’m gonna have the last laugh

and get to go out
on my own terms."

Man: You’re not an emotional
person, at least not outwardly.

Do you feel more emotional
than a normal day?

Because you’re not really
showing that, if you are.

You trying to get me
to cry, John? [ Chuckles ]

Woman: The captain is leading
his team out into the field

of the very last Opening Day.

He’s the first one out there.

Jeter: Yeah, it was
uncomfortable. It was.

It was a difficult year to play.
It was.

I didn’t realize how difficult
it was going to be.

Announcer:
Jeter bobbles and falls down.

Olney:
We got some insight

into how the Yankees
were beginning to view Derek

more as a product
than as a player.

You know, in the past, you may
have seen the Yankees say,

"You know what? We’re gonna
talk about second base.

We’re gonna talk about,
you know, a lesser role."

Derek was treated differently.

They needed Derek on the field

so they could put people
in the stands and make money.

"You know,
we’re gonna look the other way

in terms of how
that player’s performing.

We’re gonna keep
running him out there

because the fans love him."

And that’s something
that had not really happened

in the Yankees’ history.

Sherman: I think everybody
involved with the Yankees

was always concerned
about, like, offending Jeter.

And I’m like -- Jeter’s history
is built on the perception

that he always wants to do
what’s right for the team

and right for winning.

And I’m not sure that hitting
Derek Jeter number one or two

is helping the Yankees win.

I talked to him about
moving down in the lineup.

You know, he was like,

"Give me two weeks.
Give me two weeks.

And I’ll show you that
you shouldn’t move me down."

And knowing Derek,
the person that always tried

to defy Father Time and always
tried to prove you wrong,

you know,
I’m gonna give him a chance.

He had some good months.
He had some rough months.

But it was that belief
in himself that made him great.

And I thought that
he had earned that right.

Olney: When you have a star
as big as Derek was,

a lot of times organizations
will wait for that player

to say,
"Hey, maybe now it’s time."

At some point,
Derek, as the captain --

I thought he would go in
to Joe’s office and say,

"Look, if you need
to drop me down the lineup,

I’m all for that."

And as far as I know,
that never happened.

I think that’s something
he should have done.

What kind of shit is that?
That’s what I would say.

You think I’m not a team player?

So leaving an asinine comment
like that makes no sense.

As a competitor, you go out
there like you got to prove

to everyone else and yourself
that you can turn shit around.

That’s what you do, you know?

I haven’t given up
a day in my life,

and I’m not gonna give up
a day in my life.

Now, if they felt as though
they wanted to sit me down more,

they wanted to move me down --

And if they do it,
then, hey, being a team player,

I’m not gonna complain.

I’m gonna do it.

But you don’t go volunteer,
saying --

Man, that’s just
the wrong mind-set.

You know, champions don’t have
that kind of mind-set.

When shit gets hard,
that’s when you --

that’s when you try
to prove people wrong.
