growing up,
my dream was to play Division 1 soccer,

and I was pretty good.

Junior year of high school,
I had a dozen offers for a full ride.

That's impressive.

The first game of senior year, I tore my
ACL

trying to slide tackle a midfielder.

And just like that,
every D-1 school rescinded.

The only place that still wanted
me was the Naval Academy.

I never really had much
interest in the military,

but, hey, the tuition was free.

I was promised a roster spot.

I played all four years on varsity,

and we even won the Patriot
League championship my senior year.

Nine months later,
I was deployed to Afghanistan.

That sounds horrible.

Not at all.

Joining the Navy was the
best decision I ever made.
