All right, this is the mouth

of the creek that
runs through my land.

Down here is the Brushkana
River flowing through.

This is the creek that I
wanna build a bridge across.

It'll give me access
to a lot of country

and I'll be able to
use that early winter

when it hasn't quite froze up

and isn't safe to travel across.

This bridge is
definitely a must.

[Narrator] Jessie Holmes is
entering his first summer

as a permanent resident of
the Brushkana wilderness.

If he is to survive,
Jessie will need to blaze

a trail into the
surrounding landscape

and scout for needed resources.

But the Brushkana River
has blocked his access

to what lies beyond.

And he must first devise a
plan to cross its waters.

Come on, buddy. Straight
across, good boy.

Come on, come on. Good boy.

I moved out here 'cause it's
a great place for my kennel,

but I didn't just move
out here for one thing.

I moved out here to explore,
become a better woodsman.

There's a lot of
country out there

and it has a lot to offer.

The only way you're
gonna get into it

is to get off your
ass and get out there.

[gentle majestic
music continues]

Yeah, right here, I
think this is the spot

where I was just coming along,

looking at some firewood
up on this bank.

And somewhere through
here, I just got going.

And dammit, whoa,
whoa, whoa, whoa,

whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!

No brakes on the four-wheeler,
ended up right down there

in the river, almost stuck.

Definitely not a
good spot to cross.

You know, this is
the kind of stuff

that I'm trying to
avoid right now.

Once I get into the tundra,
I think I'm gonna find

a better spot to
put this bridge.

And this is gonna be

my first full summer
here at Brushkana.

I'm pretty excited about it.

I've worked really hard this
whole year to make this happen.

And I'm hungry to make
this place better.

I got four months ahead of
me before winter sets in.

[ice shattering]

It's a short-lived period,

and I wanna see Brushkana be
a self-sustaining homestead.

That's gonna require
a lot of work.

[gentle majestic
music continues]

I think this is it. This
looks like the spot.

There's not a lot
of trees and brush

that I got to cut out to
make a trail through here.

It's narrow. The
water's not too fast.

You're definitely
not gonna be able

to drive in and
out of this easy,

so it needs a bridge.

Up here, I have lots
of nice timbers.

I'll be able to cut
these trees, limb them,

pull them over here,
strap them all together,

and then I can
bridge this gap here

and then I'll be able
to drive safely across

and then it's just go time
once I get across here.

It looks like I can go
straight up through there,

accessing all this
country ahead of me.

Right now, I'm gonna go home.

I'm gonna pack up
everything I need for this,

gather up my chainsaw,

get ready to head out
for a couple days.

[gentle majestic

Survival skills is freedom.

And if you don't
know how to survive

in the woods, you're done.

Okay, kids. Let's see
what we have to do.

We're gonna fix this shed up.

We got to take this canoe off.

You see, this thing is
looking all old and see

if it withstands
our bear shake here.

It's pretty good but the
sides need to be redone.

Look at the flooring. We'll
take all this junk out.

But before we do all that,

let's clean up this
area real good.

[Narrator] For Ricko
DeWilde, summer in Huslia

is the opportune time
to make vital repairs

around the family cabin.

Today, he and his children,
Skyler and Skarlett,

will begin work on the woodshed.

It's a decades old
structure that, when fixed,

will allow them to
keep their firewood

and other supplies out of
the harsh Arctic elements.

[gentle sombre music continues]

[Ricko] Do you know
who built the shed?

[Skyler] Who?

Your late Auntie Reba.

Reba?

[Ricko] Yeah. Remember
how tough she was?

Yeah.

She was awesome.

The shed has some
sentimental value

because my late sister
Reba, she made it,

and I had a lot of fun
times with my sister.

So seeing that shed, it
always reminds me of her.

So in a way, I kind of
wanna strengthen that shed

a little bit and add a little
more to the memory of her.

[gentle sombre music continues]

Okay, what I wanna do first,

I'm gonna clear
these boards out.

You guys clear this,
then we're gonna cut some

of this brush down.

[gentle sombre music continues]

It's important for me
to keep my camp tidy.

Keeps the bugs
down, keeps the mice

from having a cosy
home in my house.

Any kind of grass or
a overgrown brush,

if I clear that out, it keeps
it safer for bears, too,

because the bears
know when they have

an advantage coming in,

trying to sneak in
through the cabin.

-[Skyler grunts]
-What are you doing?

Getting as much as I can
before Dad runs it over.

[gasps] See? He ran over
all the blueberries.

[Skarlett groans]

Okay, you guys ready to
move the snow machines?

Sky, you're a wheel dog.
Skar, you're a lead dog.

Whoa, whoa, keep pulling.

It's like sled dogs.

[gentle sombre music]

This summer is a little
different for me.

My kids are getting bigger,
so I can have Skyler

and Skarlett help
out a lot more.

[grunts] Okay, that's good.

And that makes
life easier for me.

And I'm also trying
to get them to learn

to be a little more independent.

Heave, heave. [grunts]

I know what I had to do
when I was growing up

and they don't have to work
quite as hard as I did,

but I'm gonna have
them do a lot more

than they did last year.

[grunts] There we go.
Jeez, you kids are rugged.

One more. Go!

Momentum, keep the momentum.

Keep going between that
and still go on the tree.

[Ricko grunting]

I have a little work to do to
get this shed up and running,

but it's gonna be a huge,
huge bonus to me out here.

Looks awesome.

You know, if it wasn't for
you kids, I wouldn't be able

to do this, you guys
are bonafide bad asses.

I like challenges,

and I'll keep improving
everything I do.

All right. Well, the
thrones await. [laughs]

My ability to be here
and have this lifestyle

at Kavik is directly tied into
having a profitable business.

Businesses have to
have certain services,

bathroom facilities
being among them.

And those bathroom facilities
this far north are outhouses.

The throne, the bush cush.

This is your basic
outhouse. Hole on this side.

There's a bucket underneath.

Take the material out and
burn it. Seems solid enough.

But they've been in play for
over a decade, over 10 years.

You can see the water and
the staining on the bottom.

You sit down to do your
business, then over 10 years,

it's just gonna soak
in, so it's time.

Why the heck not build a new
one and then get of the old?

What does it gain me?

New, fresh, clean, and
the honour and trust

of the people coming in.

If you're gonna plunk your
butt down on one of my seats,

you're gonna know it's clean.

[saw whirring]

The first step, build the
base it's gonna sit on.

[saw whirring]

[gentle spirited

I have to build the base
stronger and beefier

than every other part
of this structure.

Nothing in life can be
built on a shaky foundation.

I get hurricane force
winds at 60 below 0.

I get 20 feet of snow
covering these things.

I've been in the outhouse
when a bear has come

-and knocked me over in it.
-[bear growls]

I have to build it so that
it survives a lot of things

that maybe your standard
bathroom doesn't

in a three-bedroom,
two-bathroom home.

All right, it's done.
The bases are good.

They're strong.

The next steps, I
need to start getting

the two-by-four skeleton
structure going.

So time to get the
measurements for the walls.

[gentle sombre music]

[Chip] It's always changing.
Nothing's ever the same.

There's always a
challenge to it all.

There's always a
comfort to it all.

You guys are hitting
a little low.

Good one. There you go.

I just wanna make sure
you girls are in sight.

We might come up to some place

where there's lots
of moulting birds,

and we wanna be able
to take care of them.

You know what I'm saying?

The Hailstones rely
on seasonal harvests

to survive in Northwest Alaska.

The onset of summer is the time

to hunt flightless
birds while they moult,

a tradition that has been
done using native tools

and techniques in the
region for generations.

But there's only a brief
window for this custom

before the birds
migrate out of the area

and the resource
becomes unavailable.

We'll go boat around for a
while, see what we come across.

Does that sound good?

Yup.

[gentle sombre music continues]

Whole idea of clubbing is to
go and hit him in the head,

and then instant death,
and it's more humane.

And plus, we ruin no meat
and it's about subsistence.

It's about the meat. And if we
can't do that, we shoot 'em.

Let's get yourselves prepared.
We'll have a go at this.

To tell you the truth,
I'm gonna go kind

of crazy if I have to eat
vegetables for another day

because we're
honestly out of meat.

[gentle sombre music continues]

[Qutan] Oh, look!

[Chip] I see lots over there.

-Me too, holy cow!
-Look at all these guys!

Usually, we have this one chance

and this one window
of opportunity to get

as much of the birds as we can.

So once we see them, we
have to be ready and get out

of the boat as soon as possible
and just start running.

[Chip] Come on. Get going, run!

[Qutan] [laughs] I'm
already catching you up!

[Chip] Come on. Come on.

[Qutan] Once they start
running, they are pretty fast.

Oh, stay here, grandson.

Man, I almost got it.

Come on, let's go
back to the boat.

Too slow getting out of the
boat. The geese are gone.

They're all on the
other side of the creek.

A bit too wide for me to cross,

so I might as well head back.

[gentle sombre music continues]

[Chip] Are you ready?

-Yeah.
-Yeah.

[Wade] I'm ready.

[motor rumbling]

[geese honking]

[Qutan] Oh, look.

[Chip] There were a couple more.

Go ahead, you girls.
Get going, get going.

[Carol] Move, Qutan, move. Whoa.

[Qutan] Hurry up!

[Chip] Go, go!

Oh, they got it.

[Qutan] Carol! I got
one before you, ha, ha!

Wade, look, it's right
there in the water by you.

I'll get it. It's
right here, Grandson.

You just grab it.

I kind of lost it for a while.

Once I got close enough,
it started running

and it eventually
got into the water.

I actually got it
right in the head.

[geese honking]

Man, he's right in the
sun. Real hard to see.

[bullet thuds]

Got some meat. Don't
have to starve.

I saw a couple, three geese

and I went after
the biggest one.

I probably ran about 200 yards

until I couldn't go anymore
either, and I gave it a shot.

[Carol] Speckle belly, Dad?

[Chip] Speckle belly, yup.

[Wade] What is that?

That's a niglec.

It's a yellow feet, white
front. It's a goose.

[Wade] Oh.

[Chip] Qutan, if you
wanna walk that way,

I'll pick you up.

For us, this is what
we work towards.

Instead of getting a
paycheck and then going

and buying food at the
store, we're always hunting.

We basically live a
subsistence lifestyle.

It takes knowledge,
knowledge of the land,

knowledge of the rivers,
knowledge of the country,

and then it takes hard work.

I see bear tracks, Dad.

Bear tracks?

[Carol] Yeah. They
started watering.

[Qutan] Let's go.

[Chip] I would say this
is enough for today.

We'll get a couple
more tomorrow maybe.

It's a huge Kiwalik,
and we just started.

[gentle sombre music continues]

[Ricko] It's a
hard life out here,

but to be able to
accomplish what you need

to get by in life
is very gratifying.

Okay, ready? Let's go.

Let's get this shed emptied out.

[Skarlett] Okay.

Got this whole area cleaned out

to work around the outside.

Now we've got to
clear out the inside

so we have room to work in
here and maybe organise it

a lot better than what it's
looking like right now.

Woodshed is getting old.

Some of the roof is torn open,
the sides is falling off.

The floor looks terrible.

I'm gonna try to strengthen
up the foundation of it.

Trapped toboggan.

It's imperative to make
upgrades around my property

because if you don't
think ahead out here,

when the big cold winter
comes, it's very, very tough.

Thinking ahead is
about survival.

And you got to do
things around here

to upgrade pieces of the
property, like a woodshed,

the smokehouse to put away meat.

Stuff like that is
very, very important

to survival out here.

Holy! A bear skull back here.

[Skyler] I wanna see!

Might be a wolf.

I'm not too sure though, but
this isn't supposed to be

in the yard, this is
supposed to be in the woods.

Your Auntie Reba
probably did this.

She didn't believe in
hutlaanee and then,

hutlaanee is the term we
use for bad luck, bad juju,

whatever you wanna call it.

My late sister, Reba, she
used to do a lot of artwork

and she would use animal
bones, and in our culture,

you're not supposed to do that

because certain animals
have powerful spirits

and there's ways that
we're supposed to treat it

as far as like when
we harvest them.

Wolf, you put the bones
back out in the field.

And if we don't do that, you
offend that animal's spirit,

and you won't have luck
with that animal anymore.

So I really wanna put the
bones back out in the woods

where it's off the trail
where no one comes along.

Bring respect back
to that animal

that we harvested in the past.

[gentle sombre music]

Okay, I'm gonna attempt to
get this piece in place.

Like a glove. Looks good.

It's gonna stay where
it's supposed to stay.

So I'm not gonna even
put nails in there.

All I'm trying to do is
just brace up this cabin.

Any weak parts like this,
give it a little bit

of a friend to hang on
to, so that should work.

I remember when my sister
Reba built the shed, though,

and she probably was a
better carpenter than me.

I'll try to go off
of what she built,

try to make it a little
stronger if I can,

and for sure spruce
it up a little bit.

Okay, climbing up. I just
don't wanna fall through.

[gentle sombre music continues]

There's a lot of family
history around this cabin

and for me to be able
to spruce things up,

it's kind of a tribute to what

people before me left behind.

I'm more than happy to try
to keep everything running

out here, but it takes some work

and takes a little bit of time.

Okay, the sides look
good, the roof is solid,

and even the whole shack
itself barely moves now.

Old shed, 30-year-old shed
right here, but very useful.

Very good to have.

All I have left to
do is put firewood

in that thing and I'm done.

This is harsh country,
wintertime and summertime.

You're a small thing out here.

It's definitely
very challenging.

All right, I've
got a spot found,

putting my bridge together.

I'm gonna grab up all my tools
that I'm gonna need here.

One of my most important
tools anytime I go out

in the back country
is my chainsaw.

Will be using that to cut down
the material for my bridge.

I have went and
checked out my creek,

figured out the spot I
wanna build the bridge at.

Now it's time to pack
up all my tools here.

I'm taking all
manners of straps,

dead men, ropes, come-alongs,

and I got chainsaw,
chainsaw gas, oil,

tools, everything it's
gonna take to get myself

out of any situation
I get myself in.

Ain't no calvary coming
to rescue out here.

[lively dramatic music]

One of the goals for me this
summer is to really focus

on learning how to
travel in this landscape.

Back in Nenana, you
know, everything was
comfortable to me.

And I know how to travel
smoothly out there.

Out here, everything's
new to me,

it's very tough, harsh country.

The more of the country I learn,

the better I can
subsist out here.

All right, I got all
my tools and supplies.

That's where I wanna
build the bridge.

Right now, I'm gonna
try to get over there

to access all the
timber right here,

which I don't have on this side,

so I got to get
over on that side.

If I crossed here, I'd
definitely get stuck.

But here where it's a little
wider, it's not as deep,

it's not as steep of
a bank over there.

Looks like I just got
to go for it in here.

First thing I got to do is get
my machine across the creek

'cause I'm gonna
be using my machine

to get these trees
up on the hillside.

Cut them, fall them, and
then I'll be dragging

them down to the creek.

Whether I make it or not,
this'll be the last time

I got to deal with this shit.

Down here at the mouth,
everything's rough.

This is the perfect
kind of area to flip

a machine right into the creek.

But I'm one of those
type of people,

once I start going forward,
I ain't going backwards.

[lively dramatic
music continues]

Oh, fuck. Man, I'm stuck.

This is exactly why I need
to build a bridge here.

It's just too steep.

I've got my back tyre
stuck down there.

I'm gonna have to grab my winch
out and go to these trees.

Grab a strap to hook it to.

It should be able to
pull it out pretty quick

and then I'll be
able to get to work

and I won't have to
deal with this real soon

once I get a bridge across here.

This is no big surprise to me.

There's creeks that
I can cross out here,

but this one has
pretty steep banks

and you just can't cross.

I mean, you're gonna get stuck.

[lively dramatic
music continues]

All right, the winch
is working me up.

I can feel those back
tyres coming out.

Some of the same trees I'm
using to pull myself out,

I'm gonna make quick work
of to make this bridge

and save me a lot of time.

There she goes.

Now that I got that out,

I'm gonna start taking
down these trees.

[chainsaw buzzing]

These trees are gonna be green,

which means they're gonna have
a lot of heavy water in them,

they're gonna be heavy trees.

I wanna follow them
right towards the creek

so I don't have to
drag them this far.

This is an hour's worth of work

and I'll be able to use
it for years to come.

This is gonna make my
life so much easier,

taking this hour to
stop and working it.

All right, I got all my pieces.

I'm gonna throw a
choker around them.

Drag them down to where
I'm building my bridge

and then I'll be
able to head on out.

In Nenana, there's a lot of
people using the country around.

Out here, I'm the
only person using

this country year around.

It falls on my responsibility
to put my own trails in.

[lively dramatic

For me, to live out here and
be successful as I want to,

that's gonna require
a lot of work.

I've got a vision.

I can, you know,
build this place

into what I envision
it becoming.

And I'll go for
whatever I got to

to keep going forward and
make my dreams happen.

All right, snugging
them together nice.

Way whenever I go across,

I'll be distributing my
weight on all of these.

I won't have to worry
about them popping apart

and the tyre dropping in.

Looks plenty sturdy. Looks good.

This is not no fancy bridge.

This isn't something that you
just drive across full speed.

This is something that
you got to make sure

you're straight on
and that you're going

right across down the
middle because you slip,

you're gonna get
the machine stuck.

I don't really got
much to winch out to,

and it's gonna be a process.

All right, that bridge
worked just fine.

Everything looks still
good and together.

That means I can get across,

that way whenever I
go and travel this way

I'm using the same
established route.

Now that I got the bridge done,

it's time to further my route
heading towards the mountains.

It's a good beginning to start

to establish my
own trail out here.

Can I do it? Maybe I can.

I will not stop
giving it my all.

Serious? Come on then.

Good thing about my workroom,
they work for peanuts.

We got a fox out there.

[Narrator] Without summer
clients in Kavik this year,

Sue must use her time to
focus on her camp's needs.

She's replacing
her old outhouses

that have fallen into disrepair.

After completing the foundations
of the new structures,

she must now begin
work on the framing,

a crucial phase of the build.

[saw whirring]

All right, so now it's time

to put together a few uprights.

If you imagine this
is the front wall,

this is where you're gonna
open the door and enter.

I build this front structure
first, put it all together

laying down, stand
it up, and then

I'll get the sides put in.

Do I know what I'm doing?

Nope. Not all the time.

Do I make mistakes? Yup.

If I make a mistake, the
amount of money it costs

just to build an outhouse,
your into the thousands.

Just in lumber, just in
people to shop for it, fly it.

It's taking up space that I
need vehicles to be in here for,

fuel to be in here for.

If I pooch it, I don't
have a lot of recourse.

I'll probably spend
a lot of time crying,

then have a really,
really good bonfire.

All right, so you've got your
front wall, your back wall.

These are gonna be the
pieces that I put up top.

And if you notice, I'm maybe a
little vertically challenged,

so I've got my
ladder over there.

These are the final
bones if you will,

before I put on the plywood.

For fuck's sake.

I had spinal surgery this year.

I must be hyper aware of
slipping, falling, and twisting.

Let's go back to work.

The centre ward will provide

stability and strength.

I can sometimes get
22 feet of snow.

It may cover this whole outhouse
and it's gonna weigh tonnes.

And if you're sitting
there doing your business

and it decides to go
kerpow, it's gonna be

a whole lot less fun than
the chore normally is.

So the frame is up
on the first one

or the bones, as I had said.

So now, for this one, the
skin is next, the plywood.

This has been a
pretty goofy year.

We have a pandemic going on.

I don't have very much
for clients right now.

A lot of people had to cancel.

The entire globe is
affected, myself included.

Rather than cry about it,
I'm taking time to do chores.

I'm cleaning everything,
deep cleaning.

I'm replacing a lot of things.

And to me, that means build
something fresh, start new.

You wanna do your business,
number one or number two,

I've got a new facility for you.

I got screws all the way around.

So this side is done.

I've got the other walls to
pop up and onto the next one.

Living out here, you
got to be humble.

It's like a balance.

If you disrespect that balance,

it comes back to
you in a bad way.

When all is said and done,
this should be about a week

and a half of firewood during
the coldest months of winter.

The shed work is done,
so all I have left to do

is put firewood in that
thing and I'm done.

[chainsaw buzzing]

When I started the shed and
started cleaning up the yard,

I thought it was like a lot
of work with little rewards,

but as the project went on,

I got more and more
ambitious to finish it

and the kids were a huge help.

I couldn't have pull the
snow machines without them.

And the shed is looking
real nice and it's gonna be

a lot easier for me
when I go get my wood

out of that shed in the winter,
and it's gonna keep it dry,

so I'm real happy with
the whole project.

Good job. This is a
real success story.

Only thing left, let's
get rid of these bones

that were in the yard, okay?

[Skyler] Yeah, where?

There's a place we used
to go right around there,

so I wanna show you
guys where it's at.

[gentle calm music]

I think it's good that I
not only fixed this shed up

and it's kind of an honour
to my late sister, Reba,

but also she left
behind some animal bones

that wasn't right
in our culture,

and so it's a chance
for me to get them out,

enjoy the country, and
also scatter its bones out.

[gentle pensive music]

I'll put it over here off the
trail, way out of the way.

Some of it might be
like caribou bones,

but you see that one right here?

That looks like a wolf to me.

And that's not supposed
to be in the yard at all.

They say they walk out
real strong in spirit

and they're supposed to
put the bone in the woods

because if you can play
with it and you don't

put it away right,
it'll come back to you.

And that's what
hutlaanee is all about,

it'll come back to
you in some bad way.

But, okay, let's head home then.

I think by me putting
these bones back out,

maybe that's some closure
in a way, you know,

and no matter how she lived
her life and what she let go of

out here as far as culture,
she'd probably be grateful

that we put them
back out on the land.

Now, she's with our ancestors
and with the old way of life.

[dramatic music]

[Chip] Yeah, our
season's always open.

We are always constantly
looking for food.

It's the culture.
It's the society.

It's our interactions.
It's what we do.

[Qutan] There's a
goose right there,

you look, you can aim for it.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

Now this one came out in
front of us intentionally.

It might be a mom leading
us away from its babies.

I don't wanna mess
with it. It's alone.

We need to find them in
groups, if they're in groups,

then there are male ducks.

[Narrator] The Hailstones
are hunting flightless birds

to secure much needed
meat for their camp.

But the family only
has a brief window

for this key harvest before
the birds end their moult

and migrate out of the
region until next spring.

They can fly.

The ones that we tried to go
after, they were able to fly.

They got away, they went
into the much larger ponds.

We're at the point where
they're just starting to fly.

I see a lot of
ducks flying today

and there weren't
none yesterday.

I was chasing fly away?

[Carol] Yeah, it flew away.

-They're done moulting.

This kind of hunting

ain't gonna last very long.

front for a little while.

Hunting like this is pretty fun

and it's like a really good
activity for the family to do

'cause we all go out
and get some exercise.

Anyone could participate, even
my little nephew, having fun.

She did it, she

He thinks he helped out.

Every time we get one, he's
like, "Yes, we got one."

I grew up around
here most of my life

and I know when's a good time
to go out and do something.

Right now, we're actually
teaching Wade that.

He's almost four now and
he's learning a lot of things

cooking is just awesome.

Never had a goose
burrito before,

but this saves on
having to wash plates.

being out there
and running around.

Mine wasn't too hard.

I had him in sight
the whole time.

I just had to catch up to him,

a goose across

I've got a lot of
learning to do out here.

The only way to do that is
to leave the front porch

and get out in the country.

So as I'm working along,
I got some flagging tape

that I'm tying
every now and then.

And I'm leaving a blaze on
the tree that'll last forever.

I wanna take my time,
put it in a nice trail,

and use the same
route every time

to prevent getting
lost, turned around.

And also to keep
working through this,

it'll eventually wear
into a good trail.

[Narrator] Having successfully
constructed his bridge,

Jessie Holmes now has
access to the vast landscape

surrounding his new
home in Brushkana.

It's his first summer
in this unfamiliar area

and it is essential that
he establishes a new trail

and scouts for needed resources

that he can harvest
now and in the future.

That's what I love about
getting out in your backyard.

Things start coming together,

resources start showing things.

I'm not just seeing
tundra and trees out here,

I'm seeing things that
I can use in the future.

This trail puts me that
much further ahead.

Wow, this is so beautiful.

This is Monaghan
Creek right here.

I've made it out here
in the winter time,

running my dogs along
this ridge line.

It's just incredible to get
to see it in the summer,

the snow-capped mountains
in the background,

this is just a beautiful creek.

It's a little bit
dangerous crossing it.

Hopefully, I can find a way
to get my machine across.

I can see a little ridge here.

I might be able to make it
up into the high country

and over towards
the Nenana River.

I'm pretty eager to
keep going forward

just 'cause that's
my personality.

This river is very fast

and it's pretty unsafe
to travel until later

in the year when
it's been deep cold.

But I came this far, I'd
like to go a little further,

and I just can't not try.

I got to be real
careful when I'm driving

in this kind of stuff.

Not a lot to pull
yourself out to.

Gotten stuck in some
places like this before.

It's really easy to get stuck.

Whoa! The ground's like this.

There's nothing but water.

If you go fast through it
and you spin your tyres

and you tear it up, you're
gonna sink straight down

to the bottom, then you're
gonna have a problem.

Well, that's not a great idea.

I could feel the current
pulling me when I got in there.

So looking like this
is gonna be the end

of the safe line
of travel for me.

All right, yeah. Whoo!

Okay, it looks like
disaster diverted this time.

I'm done with trying
to cross the river.

Just doesn't look like
it's gonna happen.

I've accomplished a
lot coming out here.

I'm gonna enjoy the rest
of my time out here,

go find myself a good fishing
hole, catch something to eat.

Hopefully, I can come
back here in the fall time

and this will drop
a couple of feet

and I'll be able to
get right across it.

Oh, there we go, I got
one. Oh, that's a nice one.

Oh, yeah, that's definitely
good for the frying pan. Whoo!

This was an important
trip for me.

I have to learn the country,
I have to mark my route,

I have to expand my range.

Look at that beautiful
Arctic grayling right there.

Just perfect pan-size.

Every time I go out there, I'm
gonna discover something new.

I know there's something
out there waiting for me.

And that just keeps me
awake at night daydreaming.

Life is changing, and
it's about finding the joy

in the change
instead of the fear.

Base done, bones in,
walls done, doors done,

the seat is done, everything's
here, so now I have paint.

Exterior, enamel.

The colour that I have
chosen, drum roll, is grey.

So, let me get going.

And away we go.

And the goal is to put
it on pretty dang thick

'cause you want it to get
into some of these cracks.

You want it to fill
where the screws are.

You want it to fill everywhere.

Once the paint job is
complete, and this enamel,

it's gonna cure and
it's gonna bake right in

and it'll be hard as a rock.

And that's what I want. This
is a brutal, brutal climate.

All right, I'm
actually pretty proud

of the way they turned out.

These look like really
cute little black

and grey penguins or something.

I've got the two old outhouses
stabbed and stacked out back.

Got the new ones,
put them in place.

The decorative touches are done.

I got to say, they
look really good.

When the clients do come
in, they've got brand new,

spanking clean outhouses,

and in anybody's book,
that's a good feeling.

Where I'm at right
now, the old outhouses,

the state approves of one way
to get rid of that much wood.

Light it on fire,
turn it into ash.

That's how I have to get rid

of everything
that's garbage here.

All right, there we go.

Now, put a little go-juice
on it to get it going.

And the rest is wood,
it'll take care of itself.

Burn, baby, burn.

You went from being a turd
house to a turd burner.

Yikes! Do not go in there.

By having the two new
outhouses in place,

it feels almost a
little bit decadent.

I spent a bit of time, a lot
of effort, some finances,

building two new outhouses for
people that aren't here yet.

But, you know, if you build it,

they will come, and they will.

These things have a way
of filtering through.

This will pass.
People will come back.

But you have an opportunity
to say, "This will define me,"

or "I will overcome it."

The whole world is
going germ-free,

I might as well hop on
that train. And I did.
