Leadership can be explained in many ways and can mean different things to different people.

So as a starting point in this course, we're going to focus on leadership within organizations.

Organizations need strong leadership.

Why?

Why is it important for organizations to have leadership?

Before we go on, take a minute and really think about this.

I want you to write down two reasons why you believe leadership is important to companies or organizations

of any kind.

Really?

Imagine what it might be like if your company had absolutely no leadership.

And if you're saying, well, that's the case for me, I'm sorry, we're going to try to change this.

OK, so here's my answer about why organizations need strong leadership.

And I've got three reasons.

The organization needs to have leadership because leaders provide direction, motivation and inspiration.

These three leadership contributions allow ordinary people within an organization to produce extraordinary

results over the long term.

Leadership is the essential ingredient that turns visions and plans into reality.

Effective leaders can harness the energies of the people on their team and gain their commitment to

achieve great things.

Dwight D. Eisenhower said it very clearly.

Leadership is the ability to get others to willingly do the things you want them to do for you.

Key elements of leadership are there for vision and motivation.

Vision is clarity and knowing where you need to get to setting the direction and nailing down your desired

end result and motivation is convincing the people to work with you to achieve the vision.

In other words, gaining their commitment to work with you, follow you and commit to your vision.

There are lots of different theories about what makes a leader effective, so let me break it down into

a simple framework that will give you a foundation to build on.

Let's look at three ways to classify the factors that make an effective leader.

Number one is the traits or characteristics they have.

Number two is the behaviors that they exhibit.

And number three are the situations they find themselves in.

OK, now let's take a quick look at each of these factors.
