The bodies of 26
year old Joann Katrinak,

and her three month old
son, Alex,

were found in Heidelberg
Township, Lehigh County.

She's beaten about the face,

and then there's a single
gunshot to the head.

Three-month-old Alex

was found lying
on Joann's chest.

Somebody was enraged.
Somebody was very violent.

Why do you bring them here?

- Look like she was dumped.
- Dump site, yeah.

33-year-old
Patricia Lynn Rorrer

is being held without bond
on two counts of kidnapping

and two counts of murder.

Patricia Rorrer's
DNA matches DNA collected

in Joann Katrinak's car
and at the crime scene.

The headrest of the car

supposedly had
six blonde hairs.

She took my life.
My life was perfect.

It'll never be that again.

They made it out to be

almost like a fatal attraction
type of crime.

The evidence that convicted her
was garbage.

I mean, we have a murder
victim who has hair in her hand.

Whose hair is that?

April 9, 1995...

the body of Joann Katrinak
and her three-month-old baby

were found in a wooded area
in Pennsylvania,

just 15 miles from the home

they disappeared from
four months earlier.

Joann was 26 years old.

She had a 15-week-old baby.

When the
bodies were discovered,

the young baby,
three-month-old Alex,

was found lying
on Joann's chest,

and he had died
from either suffocation

or exposure
to the elements.

This is
a very heinous homicide.

It really takes a monster

to kill a baby
in that manner.

Joann Katrinak
was killed with a bullet

that was fired
almost certainly

from a .22 Jennings revolver.

Patty Rorrer
owned a .22 Jennings.

Patty's alibi fell apart

because she said
that she was at a dance class.

And then it was proven that she
never signed in

to the dance class.

You know,
the biggest strike against Patty

was that the prosecutor

maintained that hair found
in Joann Katrinak's car

was a match to Patty Rorrer.

A comparison of the hairs found
in the victim's vehicle

were found to be
microscopically consistent

with the hairs
of Patricia Lynn Rorrer.

Since this case went to trial
and has been adjudicated,

microscopic hair analysis

has been determined to be
a junk science.

It's been debunked.

What we know now

is the hair that looks
identical to the eye,

even under a high-powered
microscope,

could come from a number
of individuals.

The hair analyses
are discredited.

It would no longer be
admissible in any court

in the country today.

When this case was examined
by the FBI forensic lab,

it was one of the first cases
in the nation

where DNA was utilized.

I'm a little skeptical

of DNA testing that was used
in that era.

I would like to see some more
contemporaneous evaluations

done right now.

So the question is,

how does Patty get released
if she's innocent?

On December 15, 1994,

Andy Katrinak arrives home
around 6:30

to find his wife
and 15-week-old baby missing.

Andy said
that he wasn't worried

when he found Joann not home
because he knew Joann

had planned to go
Christmas shopping.

And so he just kind of assumed
she was tied up in holiday traffic

or, you know, running late.

And then he calls his mom because
they apparently had made plans.

Mom says that,

"Joann was gonna go Christmas
shopping with me today,

but she never showed up."

Officer Joe Kicska
and Officer Harold Kleiner

responded to the call.

And they spent only 18 minutes
at the house.

They really weren't
that concerned.

Basically they thought

maybe she was just late
getting home.

They didn't
treat this as a crime

with any degree
of-of seriousness.

At that point,

all you have is a female
who didn't come home.

There's too many reasons
why people go missing.

And they might be missing

because they
want to be missing.

Joann's sister, Peggy,
arrived at 1:00 a. m.

And at 2:45
in the morning,

just a few hours later,

Peggy calls 911

and says that they found
Joann's car

about 100 yards
away from the house

in the parking lot
of McCarty's bar.

There was nothing...

unusual about the vehicle,

other than,
according to Andrew,

where it was parked.

After the car was found,

Andy said he went
down to the basement,

and he followed the phone line

for the cordless phone,

and he found
that the line was cut.

And Detective Grube saw
that Andy had already spliced

the phone line
back together.

Andrew felt his
wife had been abducted.

And I ask him,

"Who would you think would want
to abduct your wife?"

And he mentioned
his ex-girlfriend,

Patricia Rorrer,

who lived in North Carolina.

Andy gave the police
Patty's name

because he said
that she had called his house

three days previously.

And Joann was upset
that Patty was calling.

Patty and Andy would talk
maybe once or twice a year

after they broke up.

They were just basically like
chatty, friendly phone calls...

"Hey, how you doing?"

So Joann told Patty that,
"Andy's married.

"We have a baby.

Don't call here anymore."

And she hung up on her.

The prosecution's theory
of the case

is that Patty Rorrer
was basically

an angry ex-girlfriend,
an obsessive ex-girlfriend.

Joann hung up on Patty,

and that set this entire
case in motion.

Prosecutor would say,

"Okay, just because
of a phone hang-up

"that this woman
would drive 500 miles,

"you know, kidnap her first,
brutally beat this woman,

and kill her baby?"

I mean, that doesn't make
sense to me.

So, within 24 hours,

the police had Andy
as their number-one suspect

and, really, their only suspect
at this point.

It's not a homicide yet.
They haven't found any body.

There is no indication
that anybody

- forcibly entered the house.
- Yeah.

There looks to be damage
and the screws removed.

If you don't gain access
to the house

from removing all the screws...

- Great point.
- It begs the question...

then why in the heck
is the phone line cut?

Great point.

So they start going
to the house

over and over
and over again.

Every dark stain on anything

that could be blood
they take,

ultimately test it.

It's not blood,

and there's no evidence

to indicate
that Andy was involved,

outside of the fact that he
is the most likely suspect

because most of the time,
you know, it is the father,

the husband
who is responsible.

I think before we start
looking at suspects

or persons of interest,

let's investigate the case.

I think we should just go
backwards

and just start working
this case through.

So we're gonna need
some local help.

What do we know
about our local investigator?

He's an investigator
in Lehigh Valley.

His name is Rod Devine.

He's been involved in thousands
of investigations.

He's done dozens
of homicide investigations.

And this guy is really,
really good.

I am fortunate
that I work in a field

that I chose
and that I'm good at.

I've been
a full-time investigator

for the last 18 years.

Over the years, I've worked with
the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

I've worked with the DEA.

I've worked with
the district attorney's office.

And my bread and butter
is definitely on the road.

I know that that person

that I'm looking for
is not gonna be in my den.

I've got to go out
and find 'em.

We're driving
into Allentown, Pennsylvania.

I've been up here
40-some years.

So we're out to uh, speak
with Detective Grube.

And part of what I want to uh,
question him about

is his initial take on Andy

and any misgivings that he
may have had from the start

about the disappearance
of his wife and his child...

anything that correlates
to information that he gave

uh, the detectives at the time
of the missing family members.

Rod Devine.

- Hi. Barry Grube.
- Pleased to meet you.

Mr. Grube, I appreciate you
having me in your house today.

I'm sure you recall
your first introduction

to the Katrinak
missing-persons case.

Yes.

Can you tell me a little bit
about that?

I went down
to the house with him,

and he took me
into the basement,

where the latch was pried.

And then he also showed me

where, instead of a window,
the door had a piece of plywood

with, like,
18 or 19 screws in it.

He showed me where the screws
had been taken out.

- But they left one screw in.
- Yeah.

And then they
pried the door open.

I couldn't really figure
that one out.

I don't understand
why they did that.

Andrew surmised...
he told me

that probably someone
had a cordless screwdriver

to get all them screws out.

Just he... he had
everything figured out

as to what he thinks
happened.

He also then showed me

where the line
for the cordless phone

had been cut.

He had spliced the line
back together.

With regard to the um,
the house,

were you involved in taking
anything for a DNA evaluation

or anything
that looked suspicious to you?

Yes,
I actually called the state police

and said that we wanted to do
a search of the house...

- Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- And we'd like their assistance to do that.

And we took a few items

to turn over to
the state police for analysis,

but none of it turned out
to be any...

- The house was orderly.
- It was very orderly, yeah.

There was nothing
out of um, place there.

And after there
was no trace of Joann

for probably...

at least a week,
maybe ten days,

that's when we decided to turn
it over to the state police.

So what's your feelings
on Andrew?

Probably the thing
that struck me the most

about Andrew was the fact

that when he named Patty Rorrer
as the suspect...

And the first thing
in my mind is,

"Why in the world
would she be the suspect?

Because uh, she called
and Joann yelled at her"...

"Now she's a suspect
to abduct your wife?"

- Sure.
- That didn't add up to me.

- Yeah.
- What's the motive?

Because she got mad at Joann
on the phone?

Yeah.

I just felt
he wasn't being up front

and telling
everything he knew.

You know, Joe and I went
to Pennsylvania

to try to take a look
at the crime scene

and kind of reconstruct
the whole theory

about what
the prosecutors said.

And basically we wanted to take a
look at everything that they said,

how the murder occurred.

And we also went out
to the woods

where Joann and Alex bodies
were found

four months
after they disappeared.

I'm curious to try to develop
a time line

and try to reconstruct
this whole thing.

Be interesting to see
if it's plausible.

Yeah.

'Cause I'm anxious
to see the house.

You're visible.
Is there neighbors around?

- Right.
- It's in the broad daylight.

- Mm-hmm.
- She's supposed to meet with her-her mother-in-law

at what, 1:30 or something
to go shopping?

That's gonna
be interesting to me,

to see
if all that'll match up.

I think so, too.

This the front door?

Yeah, that's the front door
to the house there.

Here's that bar.

- Yeah. Yeah.
- House, houses.

The bar itself
is right there.

- Mm-hmm.
- So look at the eye shot.

Look at the tables.

So, as things are going on, you
could easily see over there.

Look at that.

- Nice-looking bar, too.
- It is a decent bar.

- I like those old kind of bars, you know?
- I do, too.

That's where you get
a good hot dog, milkshake.

Yeah.

Fairly heavily traveled road.

- Look at all these houses. They were here.
- Yes, yes.

Obviously, these things are
100 years old, some of them

- or older.
- Yeah.

Wow.

Okay, so,
according to the prosecutors,

she would have to walk
all the way this way, right?

Yeah.

Come here,
and I'm gonna go down here.

I'm gonna break in
from down here.

Yeah.

And just say she had
a screwdriver in the car.

She just happened to have a screwdriver
in the car, some tools in the car.

But you would go back out, go get the
tools, and then start working on the door?

- I don't...
- Don't make sense.

Wow.

There a light switch?

No, it's dark.

So think about this.

We walk in here.

How we gonna
go find the phone line?

- Think how crazy that is.
- Right.

I mean, we walk in, we can't find
the-we can't find the light switch.

Wow.

We might scurry up
a few old rats this morning.

I tell you.

How do you even know to go
find the daggone phone line in here?

And why wouldn't she
just cut it from outside?

- Yeah.
- I don't know.

So she would've walked
all the way through here,

cut the phone line.

How many feet
would you say this is, Joe?

Let's see, we got 18, 19...

Oh, it's a-it is a good distance.
Yeah, I'm with you, Ira.

So we got about 30 to 40 feet.

She would've walked
30 to 40 feet,

and she goes all the way down

through one room, two rooms,
and then the third room...

- All the way to the end...
- Mm.

Of the room for what?

To cut a phone line.

In the dark.

Yeah,
something ain't right here, brother.

This just ain't getting
the smell test very well.

This is a big old Christmas
turkey walking right at us.

Oh, yeah.

So, Ira,
what are your thoughts on that abduction?

Let's say Joann is coming
out the house with the baby.

Yeah.

Okay, Patty hears her
coming out, okay?

So now Patty runs back
down here somewhere, okay?

Okay, I'm okay with that.

So Joann's coming out
with the baby.

- Yeah.
- And Joann got the baby.

- Puts the baby in the car.
- She doesn't see Patty, okay?

- Yeah.
- While she's putting the baby in the car...

- Patty pops up on her.
- Yeah.

Now you-now you get in the car.
It's too much.

Because a mother would close that
door and say, "Tell you what...

"you ain't taking my baby.

- "You do what you want to do. I'm not going with you.
- Right.

Do what you gonna do.
You gonna do it right here."

Let's take a ride and see
if we can go the route

to the crime scene
from here.

There's no direct route
out of the neighborhood.

Right.

If you're gonna drive

all the way from
North Carolina to Pennsylvania,

- eight hours...
- Mm-hmm.

And you're gonna bring a gun

and you're gonna plan it...

And then I'm gonna ride you
through your town in your car.

- Yeah.
- With your baby.

I'm in the backseat
with a gun held to your head.

I'm gonna kill you because you
hung the phone up on me?

- There's something strange about all of this.
- Oh, yeah.

Yeah, look at this.

This is just getting
extremely rural.

So let's think about this.

We've been in the car
over 20 minutes.

We still have
a few minutes to go.

It's just too far
for Joann not to react,

for her not to panic and say,
"You know, enough is enough.

"I'm not... Where the hell
are you taking me?

"You're taking me out too far.

"You know, something's
gonna happen.

What are you gonna do
with me?"

- Yeah.
- It's either fight or flight, you know?

Gonna need to go straight on up
and then start angling left.

Angling left.

So probably about 300...
I don't know.

Little walk here.

Yeah, little walk up
in through here.

If you walk next
to these big trees,

the stickers can't grow because
of the roots of the trees.

- Yeah.
- That's a old Indian trick.

Wow. Don't you wish
these trees could talk to us?

So it should be...

About right where we're at...

Yeah.

So here's the body right there.

Mm-hmm.

Wow.

I think it's...
I think we in the right area.

Why do you bring them here?

That's what's
interesting to me, too.

Think of how quiet
it is out here right now.

Yeah.

- There's nothing out- there's no sound.
- Yeah.

There would've been
no farm equipment going

in-in that time frame
in December.

Mm-hmm.
Right.

So, if I shot a .22,

you're gonna hear it.

Yeah.

You're easily gonna hear
that gun.

And that's gonna cause people
to look out here.

Yeah.

- Hmm.
- Yeah.

So you got about a three-minute
walk from the road up here

and a six-minute walk
from the road up here.

But we talking through brush,
through all these trees,

through everything else.

That was a difficult walk
just for me.

Oh, yeah.

And can you imagine

you instructing somebody
to keep walking or something?

Oh, yeah.
No, I don't think so.

- I agree.
- No.

You have one woman,
according to the prosecutors,

with one gun.

You got a woman and a baby
with a diaper bag.

And they're gonna walk them
all the way six minutes,

- nine minutes, just walk... No.
- Yeah.

I don't know that
that's resonating with me either.

Look like she was dumped.

- Dump site, yeah.
- Yeah, she was dumped.

Shot somewhere else
and dumped here.

- Yeah.
- Yeah, I agree.

Now, you know, Joe, they
could've driven

- from that road over there...
- Right.

And then just driven
on the field.

- Yeah, yeah.
- And then come here

and then maybe, you know,
driven up to this point.

- They brought her in here close.
- Yeah.

And then they just got her out as
quickly as they could to dump her.

It seems a lot of work
for one woman by herself.

- Oh, yeah.
- Yeah.

So I think they
got it all wrong.

I think they got
this whole case all wrong.

Why in the world would Patty

kidnap Joann and her baby,

drive them 15 miles away,

kill them, dump their bodies
in an open field,

and then take the car
and return back to her house,

when she could've just easily have
killed them right there in their house?

And then she would've had-
been able to flee much easier.

So I just don't
understand that.

Do you think it fits
the narrative of the crime,

that this is a crime
of passion?

It may have been a crime
of rage and passion,

in the sense
that was the motivation.

But-but under
the prosecution's theory,

it was also being done
with a remarkably clear mind

and a lot of focus
and planning.

I've seen this
happen on TV before,

you know,
and you read about it,

but you can never
really fully appreciate

what a person's going through
until it happens to you.

And I wouldn't wish this
on anybody.

It's wide open out
here, isn't it?

Yes, that is beautiful.

locate Andy Katrinak.

He's up in no-man's land,
God's country.

Yeah.

You know,
if you lost a wife and a baby

and it was
so traumatic like that,

you might want to just get away
and change your whole life.

You think

I think we gonna have that
old Lady Luck on our side.

Yeah, he's there.

What brought you out here...
just the land?

Wow.

You know, there was
some new stuff that came out

about Patty's trial,

and we want to put it to bed
for good, you know?

How do you think Patty did it?

So you think she
actually waited for her outside?

Yeah.

We went down to the cellar.

Was the cellar always kind of,
like, unfinished like that?

And then so the wire...

we kind of tried to find
the phone wires.

But would the phone wires
have been noticeable

for her to find them?

Okay.

Oh.

Do you think
it was premeditated?

You think her target
was always Joann or...

Oh, so it's like,
"How dare you talk to me that way,"

or something like that?

One issue that
was going on at the time...

I know what
I was gonna ask, Ira...

- Mm-hmm.
- The car.

Oh, yeah.

Her car gets put
over there at McCarty's.

- Yeah.
- So what's the deal with that?

Okay.

When you were with Patty,
did-did she ever step out on you?

You don't know?
I was just curious.

Mm-hmm, right.

She lived with you at the time?

- Oh.
- Oh, really?

Lot of people
was putting the gun sights

on you as being responsible.

Did anybody ever look you

in the eye and say,
"Did you kill Joann?"

Yeah,
'cause anybody that know...

Mm-hmm.

Wow.

- I'm sure.
- Yeah.

One thing that really got me

was when I asked him
about the car.

I said, "Hey, when you"...

And then, you know, he said, "Hey,
she backed it up," and whatever she did.

And then he said, when he was
talking about the seat,

he said, "Whoever."

- He said, "Whoever put the car"...
- Yes.

And then he said,
"Well... well, Rorrer."

And I went,
"Wait a minute."

And then he said... he didn't
even say, "Patty or Patricia."

- He said, "Rorrer."
- Yes.

The strange part
was he caught himself.

- He did. He did.
- He caught himself.

- It's like he was...
- He did.

He was being careful
with what he was telling us.

Yeah, he went
into a defensive posture.

There was something
one of us asked him.

I don't know if you saw,
but he went...

Yeah. 90% of the time,
his hands were like this.

- Remember?
- They were... very guarded.

- Yep.
- It was a guarded interview.

- Yes.
- But...

then he went
to the defensive posture,

and I was like,
"Wait a minute."

- He didn't seem evasive.
- Mm-mm.

No, he was very cooperative.

It's got me going
back and forth, back and forth.

Yeah, I'm the same way.
I'm the same way.

Got us dangling
on a string right now.

- Oh, yeah.
- Yeah.

Joann was very, very,
very fun person.

She was likable.
She had a great personality.

She was a beautiful,
beautiful girl.

She was always happy.

Joann was the type of person

that her hair and makeup
had to be done all the time,

wouldn't move out of the house
without her hair being perfect.

Andy didn't go out and party,
didn't socialize.

He's very laid back.

He's a loner,

and she wasn't like that.

Joann was feisty.
She was feisty.

I think Joann
seems like a mystery to me.

there's just something there
that we're not getting

that I feel like we need
more information on.

We should
at least explore that...

maybe from close friends
or relatives

or people who were, you know,
in their mix.

Yeah, absolutely.

And we want
to talk to Karen Devine.

She was a friend of Joann's,

and we just think
she may be able to give us

some additional information
about Joann.

Hey, Karen, how you doing?
Good morning.

Good morning.

Hey, this is Ira.
I'm sitting here with Joe.

Oh, okay, all right.

So, yeah,
thanks for taking my call, too.

I wanted to talk to you a
little bit about Andy and Joann.

Can you tell me when was
the first time you met him?

I met him the
first time Joann met him

in Allentown.

We were out one night
with another friend.

Did she ever say
that he treated her nice?

Like he was a gentleman,
you know?

He protected her,
those kind of things?

Yes, you know,
she felt safe with him.

I didn't like him.

I didn't think
he was good for her.

She liked him, and there was
no talking her out of it.

Okay.

Does things change
after they get married?

Yes.

She was not able
to do anything.

She was pretty much stuck
in Catasauqua.

We then really stopped
communicating.

Did there ever come a time

where you guys started back
communicating?

Only when we visited

before Christmas.

Okay.

I owed her $200,

and I told her, you know,
I had the money.

She says, "Oh." She says, "Come here.
I want to tell you something."

We went into her bedroom.

And why did she want
to go into the bedroom

so you could
pay her the money back?

Because she wanted
to hide the money from Andy.

Okay, now,

did she tell you why she wanted
to hide the money from Andy?

Because she was
putting money aside, okay,

to get away.

She told me

that she had
a suitcase packed

and she had money put aside,

and that after the holidays,
she was planning on leaving.

Now, when she told
you she was leaving Andy,

did she tell you why?

He wanted to move to Colorado,

and she was against it.

So, when you found out,
did you think back to...

She had packed her suitcase.

Did you think that she had
disappeared on him on purpose

or left him?

Oh, yes.

Yes, I-I thought she left.

- Okay.

I-I actually
thought she-she left.

Then you find out that
she-she was killed, right?

Yes.

The way the police
tend to think about it

is that it's going to be
the spouse.

So they are naturally
and-and unavoidably

the number-one suspects,
right, at the outset.

Andy does have an alibi.

He's a contractor, and he's
helping to put an addition

on a friend's house.

Gets to his friend's house
about 7:00 in the morning.

Andy's dad shows up
at about 9:00,

and they work
most of the day.

Andy's friend
comes home around 3:00 p. m.

and confirms that Andy
is at the location.

He also confirms
that Andy left

around 5:30, 6:00
that evening.

His alibi witnesses

are a family member
and a friend.

Almost always your alibi

is gonna be somebody
that you're close to...

a friend, a relative...
because these are the people

that, generally speaking,
you spend time with.

Despite the fact
that the police

were initially
and naturally suspicious

of Andy at the beginning,

his alibis check out,

and the case
essentially stalls.

Finally, on April 9th

of 1995,

they find the bodies

of Joann and Alex.

The discovery of the bodies
in Heidelberg

began to focus attention
on Patty...

because that location
was just two miles away

from where Patty
used to stable her horses.

And it was Andy who gave that
information to the authorities.

I do think it's interesting

that after they find
the bodies,

again, the person who points
the law enforcement to Patty

is Andy.

I'm Kathy Barber,

and I am Pat's friend/sister.

We met at work.

She was very bubbly...

friendly.

We just really hit it off
right away.

There was
just something about her.

We were instant friends.

She was very kind
and softhearted

but also had
a very strong personality

and was easy to talk to.

I just enjoyed spending time
with her.

Little nervous.

Going into a prison
is a little different

than an everyday visit
with a friend.

It's hard to imagine it's been
over 20 years

that she's been there.

Patty moved to Pennsylvania

because I think she just
kind of wanted a clean start.

There had been some really
hard times in North Carolina

after losing her son
and splitting with her husband.

Pat didn't talk much
about the death of her child.

I knew it was very traumatic,
but she...

never really discussed
how it happened.

When I met Pat,

she and Andy
were living together,

but she spent more time with
me than she did with Andy.

I never really felt like they
had much of a relationship.

It felt more like to me
like they were roommates

than um, a couple.

She was happy for him
when he got married

and had his son.

I would never say
she was obsessed with him.

I do not believe
that Pat snapped

because somebody
hung up on her.

An autopsy today showed

that 26-year-old
Joann Katrinak

died of a gunshot wound
to the head.

She was also beaten
in the head

with a blunt instrument.

The Pennsylvania State Police

very quickly had a theory
that the perpetrator shot Joann

first in the face with a gun...

.22 semiautomatic.

It jams,

and then the perpetrator
beats her to death

with the butt of the gun

or-or the side of the gun
repeatedly.

Pennsylvania State Police
went down to North Carolina,

where Patty was living.

They asked her specifically,

"Do you own a gun?
Did you own a gun?"

She said no,
unequivocally, no.

Walter Blaylock,

who was one
of her former boyfriends,

he quickly, you know, tells the
police, "Hey, wait a minute.

Yeah, she does have a gun,
and, oh, it is a .22."

Patricia Rorrer
is from my home county

of Davidson County,
North Carolina.

So uh, I did a little work
in North Carolina...

some interviews,
inquiries down there,

in terms of what she was doing
down in North Carolina

up until the murder
and then afterwards.

So where did
you first meet Patty?

I know she had come
by, you know, from time to time.

She just came to the yard sale
and was browsing around.

And she just lived, like, two
or three miles down the road.

And so I knew she was
in the community.

How about just
re-sharing with me

about Patty coming
to the yard sale?

It was just like...
She just came to the yard sale

and was browsing around,

and she asked me if, you know,
if I had any-any hand guns.

I think she said she bought
and sold horses or whatever.

Of course, sometimes she was
on the road late at night

with you know, with money and
stuff, you know,

and she just needed something
for protection

- to have in her truck.
- Right.

And I said,
"Well, I've got this old pistol

that I-I don't have no use for."

And, you know, I said,

"Well, I guess
I could-I could sell it to you."

- But...
- Right.

So that's what happened.

You remember how much
she paid you for it?

- I think, like, $50.
- Okay.

And what kind of gun
was it, again,

that you-you sold her
then, exactly?

It was a-it was a little
.22 Jennings automatic pistol.

- Okay.
- Or semiautomatic.

But there ain't no doubt
you sold her the Jennings.

- Right.
- You know that.

- Yeah.
- Something particular.

I mean, I know I did,
and she knows I did.

But it may have not been
that gun.

They never found a gun, so...

They just know
it was a similar gun.

But, uh...

they say it was.

You know, just...

that makes me
regret it, you know.

Right.

She seemed
like a decent person.

I mean, you know...

You never know
what people'll do.

Right.

This line dancing

that Patty used to go to
on a very regular basis...

she insists she was
at the line-dancing class.

Right.

The trouble is
that there is a sign-in sheet,

and she had always

and consistently signed in,

- except for...
- December.

Thursday December 15th...

the day Joann and Alex

disappear.

Talk to me a
little bit about Cowboys

- back in-in the early 1990s.
- Well...

it was just
a nice place to go.

Everybody usually got along
with everybody.

There was not a night
we wasn't busy.

Mm-hmm.

There was a sign-in sheet.

Everybody's supposed to sign in
that sign-in sheet

on the night you come in.

And would it be fair to say

that Patty was a regular
at Cowboys?

Yeah.

I'm gonna say 80%
of the time.

Do you remember getting a call
from Patty?

I do.

She had called

and left a message
on the answering machine

for me to tell people
that she was in my dance class.

I do not know who's
in my dance class all the time,

'cause I do have people that
don't show up on Thursdays.

You know, everybody
don't show up every week.

How strict was the
sign-in procedures at the club?

It was strict.

That's no ifs, no ands,
no buts... it happens.

I got this tape recording.

It's a little bit of a tape
I'd like to play for you...

- just to get your thoughts.
- Okay.

This is part
of the phone-call conversation

you had with Patty.

What's your thoughts on that,
listening back?

Does that rekindle
any memories?

Well, why would somebody
tell somebody that...

"They gonna fry me"...

if you didn't do it?

Right.

I think William
has stuck to his story

for 21-plus years.

When I asked him, you know,
"Hey, are you sure?"

He was-he was adamant.

He said, "Look, this is what
I testified to at the trial.

"This is what
I'm telling you today.

My story's never changed."

And that's what
he still believes today.

This morning I'm gonna see
this uh, private investigator,

Jim Rorie,

who did some work on this case
back in the day,

and uh, get his thoughts

on some of his involvement

with the original
investigation.

Could you just
tell me a little bit

about what was going on
with Cowboys back then, Jim?

Back then,
it was a popular destination

for most weekend nights.

And, Jim, what
about the access

or process for getting
into a private club?

Is it-Do you just walk
up to the door?

Cowboys...
it was a corridor you had to go in,

and there was one entrance.

And after you checked in
and signed in,

you walk through another set
of doors that was mostly open.

You still had to
physically sign in every time

you came
through the door.

Was that pretty stringent,

from what you were able
to determine?

It was not.

I've been in Cowboys
plenty of times,

both working as a private
investigator and personal.

And it was
such a crowded situation.

If you wanted
to squeeze past,

it was kind of easy to do.

We would sign
different names.

Richard Nixon,
I believe, was one...

- Okay.
- That I used a lot.

Anything silly, because, again,
it was a pretty relaxed rule.

So I heard conflicting stories

about how strict
the sign-in process was

in the Cowboys night club.

We just can't be sure

whether Patty was there
on December 15th or not.

Patty also claimed
that she had an alibi,

which was substantiated
by her boyfriend.

Brian Ward, her boyfriend,
and his best friend

say that she was definitely
at the dance class that night,

that she was at Cowboys.

And those alibi witnesses
were dismissed

by the prosecution.

They were like,
"Oh, they're just testifying

on her behalf because they have
a close relationship."

I mean, had she actually
been there in the class,

it would be nice if some of
the other people in the class

who were not quite
as intimate with her

- Four months later. - would have remembered this.
- Right.

You know,
one of the biggest obstacles

I see with this is the hair.

Yes.

I mean, the-the hair
is a huge obstacle.

Originally the hair was found

inside Joann Katrinak's car.

The headrest of the car
supposedly had

- six blonde hairs.
- Yes.

The hairs that were
found in Joann's car

were blonde in color.

And...

Of course,
Patty doesn't have blonde hair.

She has dark hair.

But eventually
the police did find

a photo
from the horse competition,

which had happened ten days
before Joann disappeared.

Patty looks like she has
blonde hair.

And that photo pretty
much sealed Patty Rorrer's fate.

Authorities say just
before 6:00 this morning,

33-year-old
Patricia Lynn Rorrer

was arrested at her home
in Linwood, North Carolina.

She's charged
with the 1994 murders

of 26-year-old Joann Katrinak

and her
three-month-old son, Alex.

Patty Rorrer wasn't arrested

until two years after
the kidnapping and murder

in June of 1997.

By June of 1997,

she had a boyfriend,
she had a new baby.
