GLENN: Today, I'm
heading up the mountain.

When I'm up in the mountains
travelling and hunting,

I need a place to
get out of bad weather.

I've built snow caves
before, but this winter,
I wanna try something new.

This winter, I'm gonna
try to build an igloo.

If I get caught in bad
weather, I'll have a
place to take shelter.

Sometimes when you're up
on a mountain, you can just
walk into a total whiteout,

not even see which
way to go to get down.

Weather can be nice one
minute, and bad the next.

(theme music plays)

This right here is a ridge
that I spend a lot of time on.

It'll be a good
place for an igloo.

The caribou are gonna
start moving to the north,
and they often come right

down this ridgeline.

So if caribou do come through
here, I'll be well-positioned
with a shelter right here.

Keep an eye on things.

See if any animals
are moving through.

This is the spot.

I'm just gonna level
it out a little bit.

Let's mark this out.

That's about the size of me.

That's the center of my new
home up here on the mountains.

Now I just got to
make it come true.

It's an interesting material
to work with, snow, because
it's very easy to cut.

You can shape it
any way you want.

You don't need any
power tools or anything.

Like if I was building
with bricks or tile,
it would require a lot more

in the way of tools.

Okay, I like this block.

It's a good size.

About like this, but I'm
gonna need maybe 100, 150
of them to make my igloo.

There, that's my
first block and this string
will help me put it in just

the right place.

Perfect, now I just need
to keep cutting blocks,
put them around in a ring,

and spiral up.

I like to do things precisely.

I don't like to rush it.

I like to take my
time, get it right.

And this is the first
igloo I ever built.

Every time I put on a new
block, it has to tip a little
bit in, so that at the end,

they'll all meet at the top.

The walls will become the
ceiling if I do it right.

If I get it wrong, it
could all fall down.

There, last block
in the first ring.

The first ring, that's
like the foundation.

Everything's gonna rest on it.

Let's walk around this,
make sure all these blocks
are in good position.

Looks pretty good.

Look at that,
nice and circular.

Look at that, isn't
that beautiful?

A nice circle.

Okay, time to keep building.

JESSIE: The more time I spend
with these young dogs doing
things, interacting with them,

I think the better for our
bond, our relationship.

Try to pack as much in
there as I can get in there,
minimize my amount of trips

getting the snow here.

This right here is my
pump that's broken.

Sediment was building up on
the bottom, and I was trying
to get it loosened up and

twisting it, and I broke
the point that's down
there in the bottom.

It's a problem I can't deal
with and fix right now.

I've got to wait till it
all thaws out and I can
take a jack and jack that whole

18 feet of pipe out.

I just keep the snow melting
and keep as much of it on the
stove as I possibly can and

try to keep ahead on water.

I got 38 dogs right now.

It requires me to have about
30 gallons of water a day.

That's just how you start
your morning out, getting
the water into your dogs

for the day's work.

They have to stay
well hydrated.

They're not gonna wanna
drink cold or clear water,
so we make like a soup and

we call it
"Brothing" the dogs.

The runs will be longer
and they need a little
bit of energy, too,

for out on the trails.

I don't take water for
granted, because I've had to
struggle to get it ever since

I've been in Alaska,
not having electricity
or running water.

No easy way around
getting water out here.

It's just a real pain in the
neck way of getting water.

I've had to do this before,
but, uh, kind of swore I
would never have to do it.

And now that I've
had this water pump for
years, I'm pretty spoiled,

and this is not a
very efficient way of
having water for me.

So what I'm gonna do instead
is I'm gonna load up my dogs
and my dogsled and I'm gonna

head downriver and, uh, go
put it in a nice waterhole.

I'm gonna combine my
need for water, and
while I'm doing that,

I'm gonna get the dogs
out for some exercise,
and I'm gonna go out and

try some ice fishing.

This isn't something I've done
before, but if this works out
good then I'm gonna be able to

do this every year, extend
my months of opportunity
to have fresh food.

Getting some water is
gonna be a really good
thing about this trip.

I won't have to melt
no snow no more, and
once I got the hole in,

I'll be able to maintain
it, and I won't have
to melt any snow for the

rest of the winter.

All right, I don't wanna
come home empty-handed.

I don't wanna waste time.

When I'm doing things
like this, I'm trying
to combine them,

because it's an efficient
means of putting up some
food and getting some water.

While I enjoy living simply,
I'm very realistic about all
the things that I got to do

and how much I would like
them to be easier, that way
I could spend more time doing

what I love
out on the trails.

ANDY: I like an active
physical day and I
like a productive day.

I need to feel like
I accomplished something
at the end of the day to

feel good about myself.

I've got a huge
project ahead of me
in the next two days.

I'll be going to Eagle.

I've got about 2,000 pounds
of brand new batteries
for my off-grid system.

My off-grid system went
down right as winter set
on, and the road was closed,

and it really screwed
me up, so I've had to burn
gasoline and a generator

all winter long.

It's a really exciting time
here for me, to be completely
self-sufficient again.

NARRATOR: Andy Bassich
relies mostly on solar and
wind to power his camp.

Rebuilding his off-grid
system will allow him to
live independent of gasoline.

But first, he must cross the
treacherous Yukon River to
retrieve his new battery bank

and haul the heavy
load back to camp.

ANDY: I'm really excited to
finally get up to Eagle, be able
to haul these batteries down the

Yukon River, which is gonna
be a major challenge for me
because the Yukon River is not

a friendly place when you're
freighting heavy load.

It's gonna take me two days
to haul these batteries down.

I've got close to
$10,000 invested in this
whole new system now.

When you're investing a
lot of money in something,
you want longevity.

This new battery bank is
guaranteed for 25 to 30 years.

I'm spending a bit
more money right now,
but in the long term,

I don't expect to ever have to
buy another bank of batteries
the rest of my life out here.

Ta-da!

All that needs to go
downriver, 15 miles.

So each one of these
batteries weighs about 80
pounds, there's 19 of them.

The reason I'm doing this
now instead of waiting
until summer is, A,

the sun's coming back
so I'm getting lots
and lots of free power,

and it's really pissing me
off to have to use fossil
fuels to make my power.

And B, if I was gonna
do this in the summertime,
I would have to carry them

into a boat,
drive downriver, unload
them out of a boat,

into a tractor,
drive the tractor or
trailer up to the hill,

and then unload
them again into my shop.

So the ironic thing about up
here is that it's actually
easier to freight and

transport things in the winter
than it is in the summer.

Time to strap her down
and head back to Dodge, at
an incredibly slow rate.

The Yukon froze up a little
better this year than
it has for other years,

so this is a good
year to freight.

But with a delicate load like
this, it's always a challenge,
and all it takes is one bad

bump, one bad battery,
and I'm dead in the water.

Oh man, I don't know if I
can get this home like this.

Oh, man, this thing's gonna
steer weird (bleep) now.

All right.

I wanna go really
slow and take it easy.

What a mess.

Slow and easy wins the race.

AGNES: For now, it's just
me and the girls taking
whatever comes our way.

We have girl power.

Ah.

My last two pieces of wood.

Chip's gone.

Before he left, he got
us a whole bunch of real
big pile of firewood.

And now that my firewood's
gone, this is all I have left.

NARRATOR: Agnes Hailstone's
husband, Chip, is serving a 15
month sentence in Anchorage.

Throughout dark winter,
Agnes and her five daughters
have been forced to carry out

crucial tasks, and
learn new skills to
survive on their own.

-Usually, Chip's the one who
goes out and get all the wood,
and he tries to bring, um,

a few loads back at a time.

I'm gonna be getting wood
today and I just need enough
to keep the house, um,

nice and warm.

We don't usually
saw the trees down.

It's gonna be a learning
experience for me.

-You need help?
-Yeah, I was just gonna
go bring some woods in.

If you don't mind, I think
I need to go get more wood
before Idi and them come.

Idi and Edward are bringing
home their newborn baby and
they just want us to meet him.

So they're gonna come
visit for a while.

-All right.

-Right on, so
you gonna follow?

-Yeah.

-My grandson's coming and
he's just a brand new baby.

So, um, I'm gonna get
my house nice and warm.

So I think I'm gonna
go out and go get wood.

I'm glad Qutan
want to follow me.

I don't really know if I'd
actually be brave enough
to go get wood by myself.

I know how to spot wood,
I know how to limb them,
but I've actually never

cut a tree down.

-You've never, mom?

-I have never really honestly
cut a tree down, sweetheart.

So this is something we're
gonna go learn together.

This is gonna be fun.

Today, Qutan and I are
gonna be getting some wood.

I have a grand baby
coming in and, um, I want
to try to keep my grandson

nice, comfortable, and warm.

Idi just had a baby,
so she's bringing him to
meet the rest of the crew.

Even though we're not wood
gatherers, I have a purpose
and I want my grandson to be

warm and welcomed when
he comes to my house.

These look a little
small but they look like
right next to the edge.

Come look at these trees.

This is what, this is what
we're looking for, right next
to the edge, mostly dead.

So, I think, these two right
there will be just perfect.

-I get to go get wood with
Qutan and teach her something.

I get to do, um, my own wood
gathering, and make it feel
more special heat for my

grandson that's coming, and
besides that, uh, keeping
the house from freezing.

So, it's gonna be
a real awesome day.

I know it's gonna be hard
work but it's for the best.

This is kind of a new
experience for me.

Although I've been getting
wood all my life, I haven't
actually sawed a tree down.

So, my first attempt,
hopefully it'll go good.

I'm glad I brought Qutan to
back me up in case, uh, she
need to run the chainsaw

because she has as much
experience as I do.

You know what my plan is?

I'm gonna go and I'm
gonna make a little
notch right here.

Then I'm gonna saw it from
this side, and hopefully,
the tree will fall

straight down this way.

First thing I got to do
is start the chainsaw.

Oh, whoa, come on.

Let's try to give it a few
more pulls and hopefully
it will start up this time.

(sputtering engine)

This is horrible.

AGNES: This is horrible.

I've been pulling forever.

It won't start because
that trip we took up here
made this chainsaw cold,

and now it's having a hard
time starting, and then
I probably flooded it.

It's like 28 below out here,
and every time you take any
kind of machinery out here,

it's always, like,
hard to start.

You have to pull, like,
20, 30 times before
it actually kicks in.

QUTAN: Yep.

-Shall we keep on pulling?

Lucky thing I have Qutan here
to help me with holding the
throttle for me while I pull.

Like I say, even the littlest
person out here is a big help.

-Whoa.

Yes, woo, finally!

I was starting to get worried.

Watch out, Qutan.

I actually sawed
my first tree down.

A little scary at the
end, but I got it.

I think I'm ready for
the rest of the forest.

Ah, this is hard work.

And with these three
trees, this should give us
at least a week of wood.

So now that you have your tree
knocked down, Qutan, all we
have to do now is just go limb

the trees and go
bring the wood home.

now is go home and make a
fire for Idi and her baby.

Even with Chip being gone,
I get to learn something new.

Usually, Chip's out here
sawing the wood and sawing the
trees down and I don't usually

have to do that.

It's good that I'm able to
know how to saw a tree down.

Now, I appreciate his little
efforts a lot more because
this is actually hard work.

GLENN: If you want to get
something the way you want
it, you usually have

to do it yourself.

Can't wait until I can
get inside of this thing.

NARRATOR: Glenn is building
an igloo on a nearby ridge.

The structure will increase
his ability to harvest
caribou as they migrate,

and provide a safe haven
from perilous weather.

-Whoa!

Ah great, lost a
block in there.

The higher the wall gets,
the more difficult it gets
to place blocks on the wall

because there's
a steeper angle.

As the wall curves
to become the ceiling,
the surface I'm laying the

blocks on gets
steeper and steeper.

They're starting
to slide in now.

It's not good.

I just lost a block.

This one.

Blocks are time
consuming to make.

I can't afford to lose
blocks that way, so I've got
to have a different system.

As the wall goes up
further and further, it
leans in more and more,

because the wall is gradually
becoming my ceiling.

So the principle of
the arch supports
all these blocks.

But when I put a new
block on, there's nothing
holding it on this side,

it has a tendency to slide in.

So I'm bracing them
up with my shovel,
so I don't lose one.

Set the shovel there,
that just supports it.

The igloo's been
around for a long time.

It must have been
thousands of years ago.

Some of the earliest
people in the Arctic figured
out how to build a

good house out of snow.

And this is
basically the style of
construction they used.

It's not that simple really.

You don't just pile up snow
in a circle and have a house.

There's a lot to it.

The walls are getting higher.

It's getting a little
tricky to get over them.

My igloo needs a door.

Gotta think about
where to put it.

I need a door just to be
able to get in and out
while I'm building it.

All I have to do
is start tunneling.

The snow is really hard here.

I want to keep the door small.

I don't want a lot
of air coming in.

Just big enough for
me to get through.

This is great.

My igloo's got a door,
the walls are going up.

Pretty soon, I'll get
myself a ceiling on here,
and I'll be all set.

With this igloo, I'll be able
to get good protection out
of the wind, out of the cold.

I can't wait to spend
the night in here.

I never did this
before, but so far, it's
working really well.

I just gotta keep going.

JESSIE: I try to
always keep fear in me.

I think fear is something
that keeps you safe.

This is gonna be a
time consuming job.

It'll be a lot easier
if all I had to do is drill
through with the ice auger,

but I need to make
a wide enough hole I can
dip the buckets in and

easier to keep open.

NARRATOR: A broken water
pump has forced Jessie to melt
snow for fresh drinking water,

a painstaking system.

To secure a more
efficient water source for
himself and his sled dogs,

Jessie must break through the
thick ice of the Nenana River.

-That seems to
be a theme in my life,
things not being easy.

Oh man, the blades are getting
really dull on this from
drilling through that silt.

I wanna get this nice
and wide so it's easier
for me to keep open.

I'm gonna start taking
chunks out with the chainsaw.

Ever since I've been
in Alaska, it's been

safely across the Yukon,

This will allow him to power

But every minute
without the new system
operating is costly.

winter where I'm gaining six
minutes of daylight a day.

So I want this system up
so I don't ever have to burn
gasoline again to make power

until, maybe, November.

So the quicker I can get
this in, the more I'm saving,
the more self-reliant I am.

Halfway there.

Now all I got to do is
drive all the way to Eagle,
load up another load,

and do this all over again.

One of the biggest
things for me is being
self-sufficient out here,

being able to take care of
myself, and then utilizing the
resources around here to live

the way I want to live.

One of the things that really
irritates me is to have to use
gasoline for making power when

I can get free power
from the sun or free
power from the wind.

The batteries are a big
investment, but they're a long
term-investment and so getting

them down here safely,
weighed pretty heavy
on my mind for a while.

Back for round two.

Hoping I can get the batteries
in the bank and start wiring
things together tonight so I

can get off the jenny
and get on the off-grid.

Had to move these
batteries four times now.

On planes, off planes, on
trailers, off trailers.

Lifting, carrying,
pushing, pulling, it's
nothing new out here.

by braille for about
the next couple miles.

the things that you use up
here get pretty hard use.

batteries are getting heavier
or I'm getting weaker.

Whew, I've got all
the batteries here.

The hard work's done,
the physical part.

Now comes the smart part.

The next big step is to
get everything connected
up and then, hopefully,

I'll be ready to go.

thinking you know everything
out there is the minute that

you end up making a
very critical mistake.

how thick the ice is gonna
be, but I hope it's not any

Some people might say I'm
a poor man, but I think I'm
a rich man living my dream,

working with my dogs, and
catching food from the river,
it's a dream come true to me.

I've never fished for
Burbot under the ice.

Once I figure this out, I can
go run these lines the rest of
the spring until the ice goes

out and I can provide
myself with some fresh food.

I'm kind of learning
something new here, so I'm
excited to see how this goes.

My sinker's going down.

Burbot are a bottom feeding
fish, so this will go all
the way down to the bottom,

where they're travelling at.

I'm gonna set myself in
a few lines out here.

That way, I maximize
my opportunity of
getting something.

I want to use the snow to
insulate it from freezing
over too hard tonight.

So with the clear
skies, the temperatures
are bound to drop.

Got another hole ready
to set another line.

Here, it hit the bottom.

I got two lines set now.

I got one more to put in.

And that's gonna
sit overnight.

I hope I can come
back here tomorrow and
have some fresh fish.

Dogs have been being
awesome while I've been
doing all this work.

I'm pretty proud of them.

I'm pretty happy that we got
our goal accomplished here.

Now we can just let them
sit and see how it goes.

are changing a lot.

Everything feels like
it's about to come down.

It's definitely
getting harder.

Real tricky working alone.

If I had something
to help me hold it,
it'd be a lot easier.

this on my own.

I just got a little
skylight here I gotta fill
in, and then I'll be done.

Once I get it
completely closed in, it
should be really secure.

If I mess up, it all
comes crashing down.

My igloo's all closed in.

This is incredible.

The basic structure
is complete.

Now, I just have to chink
the cracks between the blocks
and then finish up the door.

a white expanse of frozen
nothingness and I see a

land of opportunity out here.

Hike, whoa, stay boys.

It's another day out here.

Ready to check these
holes and hopefully
they were productive.

Hoping that I
caught something.

pull the line all the way out
and hope there's something

on the other end of it.

I have a real sense of pride
in living this way and, uh,
being able to provide myself

with food, not having
to go to a store.

It really makes sense
for me to be able to get the
kind of food that I like off

the land and
save money that way.

It's got something for sure.

I feel terrible.

I think I had fish
on there and I lost
them, and that's sad.

This is something new
for me, and I'll take that
experience and I'll fix it.

Well, I'm thankful that
I already have two fish.

I'm hoping to catch more.

I think I got something.

Feels heavier than

Yup, I definitely
got something.

It's moving, it's a big one.

No, it is, it is a big one.

Yeah, boom, look at that guy!

That is so awesome.

Oh, yes.

I got myself three fish,
gifted to me by the river, and
I'll take one of those fish

and I'll cook it up, and it'll
feed me for a couple days.

And I can keep these holes
in and I can use this
to provide daily food.

Time to pack up and head
back home, and get these
cleaned up and cooked up.

That's some nice
meat right there.

Killed a lot of birds
with one stone here.

I've got water and I've
got a sustainable way for the
rest of the spring to provide

myself with fresh food, fish.

One of my favorite things,
especially these Burbot.

This is a delicacy.

Pretty much just takes
life to make life.

You know, it gave its
life over and it sustains
me, and gives me energy,

and keeps me out on the trail.

So I'm thankful for that.

Mm, that is so good.

Mm.

And that's what I count
on to keep me healthy, is
eating good food like this.

They call it poor man's
lobster, but to me it's a
rich man's diet right here.

There ain't nothing
poor about this fish.

GLENN: The dangers
are insidious.

The most dangerous things,
you won't see coming.

You're not gonna know
what the most dangerous
thing is until it happens.

I had to spend a
lot of energy building this
igloo, but it was worth it.

You've got to figure out what
it is you really wanna do,
and once you figure it out,

it's amazing how much
energy you'll have to do it.

I just took what was right
here on the ground, and built
a shelter that's protecting me

from the wind, insulating,
100% made out of snow.

You can't get any more
natural, you can't get any
more eco-friendly, than this.

All right, my igloo's
finished, time to move in.

I'll put in my bedding,
put in my lamp, cook up some
dinner, and call it a night.

Hey, there's a caribou.

This time of year, they often
start moving back this way,
head along these ridgelines.

This is a good spot.

That may be just the first
of many, we can hope.

Got a nice chunk
of moose meat here.

I've built a lot
of different kind of shelters,
and I think this one here just

might be my favorite.

Gravity is holding

This is a moose I got
just a couple miles from
here, down by the lake.

Mm, oh, that hot
meat is so good.

Nothing like a piece
of meat cooked on fat
from the same animal.

Not too many people cook
their meat that way anymore.

Wow, what a night!

Oh, the Auroras are out.

To be up here with my igloo
on the mountaintop under
a sky like this, amazing.

When you're up on a mountain,
weather can change fast.

But with an igloo,
I got a place to go.

Shelter from the storm.

ANDY: Everything out here is
all about planning and if you
don't plan well and if you

forget a step or miss a
step, a lot of times it
comes back to bite you.

Just doing my final check on
all the terminals and then
I just have to connect my

batteries to the
distribution panel.

ANDY: I got a nice sunny
day, so I'll know whether
everything's working or not,

'cause the sun's hitting the
solar panels really well.

The big thing to do now is
turn this breaker on and this
is either gonna fry everything

or I'll be okay.

The whole system's
up and running.

I'm pretty much done with
all of the configurations.

I'm gonna put as much energy
back into the batteries
with the sun today.

I've got a bright sunny day
outside, and the solar panels
were pumping out a lot of

energy right now.

Once it gets dark tonight,
I'm gonna get the batteries up
to full operation and

then I should be,
uh, fully operational
from that point in time.

All right, the big moment.

Convert everything
to battery power.

That's all coming from
my batteries and the sun.

I'm feeling good.

This was a big job, a lot of,
uh, a lot of work to get all
of these batteries down here.

A lot of time and effort and
money invested in this, but
this is gonna be good now for

the next 15, 20 years.

Probably the rest of my
life here at Calico Bluff.

The whole reason I live out
here is to be independent
and self-reliant,

and I'm another step
closer to that now for
the rest of my life here.

AGNES: It was a hard
day's work, but it
was well worth it.

in soon with her baby.

It's pretty exciting
watching one of my daughters

can't wait to hold the baby.

getting some of Idi's
favorite fish ready.

She loves to eat frozen
fish and seal oil,
and carrots, and, uh,

Qutan's helping me with
cutting up all the apples.

We love apples to go
with our seal oil.

I'm so happy you followed
