DOUG: What's up?

CHIP: Yeah, you said you'd
try to get down here, huh?

DOUG: Yup.

CHIP: Come down for
a round of hunting?

DOUG: Yup.

CHIP: I'm glad you got to
break away and come over.

DOUG: Well, yup.

CHIP: Hopefully we'll
catch some seals.

ED: What's up, bro?

CHIP: Make your mom all happy.

Make her some seal oil.

NARRATOR: For the Hailstones,

seal hunting is an
Inupiaq tradition passed
down for generations.

Seals provide meat and
oil that sustains the
family through the year,

but only natives can
partake in the hunt.

CHIP: Good luck.

They're gonna go off
sealing, and, uh, me and Ed
are gonna go dig out my boat.

So, that's where
we're at today.

AGNES: There's all
different times of the
year we do seal hunts,

and this time of the year
the seals are just laying
on top the ice, lazy,

and that makes
things a lot easier.

DOUG: Let's have a look here.

We're targeting
single females.

Females without
pups, basically.

You see them?

AGNES: Yup, yup, the one on
the left is way fatter, huh?

DOUG: Uh-hmm.
AGNES: So, the left first?
DOUG: Yeah.

♪ ♪

(theme music plays)

AGNES: It just
went down its hole.

We saw a couple of seals.

We went a little closer
and tried to get a
shot at them, but one,

just before we even
stopped, went into its hole.

We call those educated.

They've already
probably been shot at.

Kind of already spooked.

Ready, son?

DOUG: Yup.

Pups man.

From far away they can
look like they're, like,
four to five feet long,

and then you drive up
and it's a seal pup.

So, that's why you
don't shoot right away.

AGNES: There's all kinds
of different seals out
here and we're not trying

to catch a too small one.

We're not trying catch a male.

So, we're just
gonna keep trying.

Shoot and scoot.

SUE: I'm always trying
to think of how can I work
smarter instead of harder,

especially as I get older.

I got a lot of chores done.

Break in the weather.

I wanna get out and
take a spin and see what
my area is looking like.

NARRATOR: Living
alone 500 miles from the
comforts of civilization,

Sue Aikens must
always be prepared for
the worst in Kavik.

After enduring
a brutal storm,

she must now
hone her survival skills
in case she gets caught

on the tundra when the
next blizzard hits.

SUE: Wind and snow is
still blowing, but it's far
better than it has been.

Next storm's on its way in.

I wanna do something
with this break.

What I'm thinking
about right now are
my own set of skills.

I'm out and about and I'm
looking for just the right
kind of snow drift to maybe

build myself a snow cave.

I am wanting to sort
of recertify myself.

I do know the mechanics
of building a snow cave.

But have I done
it effectively, can I
still do it effectively?

A little bit of wind picking
up snow again already.

This might be a quick trip.

I'm looking at the south
bank as I'm going down here.

Um, I'm noticing,
you know, where,

if I needed to, where
could I build a snow cave.

Not bad.

I wanna find, where's
the good snow at?

But you can see, this is a
little on the unstable side.

You've had some slough
off coming down.

You have an overhang.

Maybe it's hard to gauge
depth perception, but that's
20, 30-foot overhangs.

I'm not happy with
what I'm seeing as far
as the snow and

ice on the south bank,
because it's already wanting,

showing movement,
and let's just call
me 200 pounds of fun.

If 200 pounds
of fun can make it
shift a little bit,

I don't know how
comfortable I am trying to
keep, keep my booty safe.

Find another drift.

JESSIE: There's just no
guarantees of anything being
any certain way out here.

The only guarantee is
you're gonna have to work
your ass off to get it.

Overflow water
pulling up here.

Everything's kind
of still freezing
over at night,

and the ice
is still solid down
here on the slough.

I'm going to go out and
scout out up the slough
by the Nenana and see if

it's opened up yet and
see if I can't get out there
and go do some duck hunting.

Time to go travel and see
where these ducks are at.

I'm looking forward to
eating some fresh ducks.

It's something I look
forward to every spring.

It's, you know, really
delicious food, nutritious,
got a lot of fat on it this

time of year.

And it's right here in my
backyard, and it's food I
can go harvest and get.

There should be a lot
of ducks up there.

There usually is
this time of year.

So, I'm going out to
scout the situation.

Luckily, things are
thawing out quick, but I
can still use this slough.

There's a lot of ice on it.

There'll be some things
like this, some overflow,
some places on the slough,

but it's not really
a big deal, because I
can go through quite a

bit of water
with a snow machine.

Right now, the ducks are
starting to come in from,
uh, down south of here.

This is gonna be kind
of a new method for
me, for hunting ducks.

Normally I go south
of here to some lakes,

but there's no water
on the lakes right now.

So, I'm thinking if I go
up here and I can, uh,
check out the Nenana,

there should be plenty
of water up there which
should attract the ducks

early season to come in there.

(bleep).

I ain't going across that.

Sketchy-looking piece
of ice right here.

I bet you, there's
nothing under it.

Yup, super unsafe
to proceed with the snow
machine past this point.

It kind of just ends here.

There's a bunch
of sticks and stubs,

and it's getting real
thin on the ice to where,

you know, it could break.

If you got the snow
machine stuck down there,
it's gonna be a big deal.

Ice is just breaking away
and eating out from under
the current, the warm water,

and this is a really
swift current out here.

Nice-looking natural
point right here.

It's like I could
disguise myself over here.

Wear my white anorak
and tuck myself in,
in this natural blind.

I think this
would be a real good
spot to hunt from, so.

It's kind of got all the
things I'm looking for, water,
disguise, accessibility.

Just gonna need the canoe
and, uh, see if I can't get
myself something for dinner.

GLENN: Who knows what
the day's gonna bring?

That's what keeps
life interesting.

Today I'm on my way to
the only other cabin in this
entire valley besides my own.

Just four years after
I first came here, a man
named Doug flew out here,

and he built himself
a little cabin
not far off the lake.

For whatever reason,
after he finished it he left.

He built a cabin on public
land without a permit, and
recently the agency that

manages all the land here
declared it a trespass cabin.

They asked me if I'd be
interested in taking it down.

I agreed.

It's unfortunate, but there
are rules even out here
that got to be followed.

Little log cabin.

Twelve, thirteen feet square.

Been sitting here
almost 14 years unused.

The easy thing probably would
be just to set it on fire.

You can see it's a
very crude cabin.

You can see cracks
right through the walls.

It was built hastily.

He might have spent a
week or two at the most.

I wanna salvage
some of this stuff.

If I clean it up
good now, some of this
stuff is still useful.

This stove for example,
I can use this.

Under the bunk
here, some shovels.

There's an axe.

That's a nice axe
right there, actually.

I'll take the wood stove.

I'll take all the
tools I can salvage.

Food, rice,
these ammo cans, they're
good for storing things in.

Insect repellent, not
much use for that right now.

Most of this stuff is
just junk, it's pure trash.

But some of it's useable.

Isn't it amazing what
some people leave behind?

I got to take all the
things that I can't burn,
things I'm going to save,

and I've got to move
them down to the lake.

If I can get them
down to shoreline,

when the lake melts in
a couple months from now,

then I can come over
with my canoe, I can move
everything back to my camp.

Let's take this stove first.

Got my load secured.

It's time to head
down to the lake.

Looks like a couple
hundred yards down to
the lake from here.

Snow's just too heavy and
soft, the sled sticks.

Then I got to be careful,
once I get it to slide.

All this steel on
this little sled, it
can run right into me.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!

Uh, yeah, kept going there.

Yeah, they kind of lurched
ahead there a few feet.

This thing's a
pain in the ass.

The sled barely sliding,
it keeps sticking.

But then when it
goes, it goes.

Oh, that's not too good.

I can't really control
it from back here.

I can't steer.

When I'm behind it,
I'm not making a trail
with my feet.

I'm not breaking the
trail, and it's kind
of out of control.

I can't steer it.

Heads off towards
the trees and stuff.

That doesn't work
too good, either.

I'm almost at the lake,
I can see it right there.

I'm gonna be excited
to get this down there,

because after that,
I got my trail in,

the rest of the stuff's
gonna come down a lot easier.

One more hill to go down.

But it is pretty steep.

Okay, it's going.

Whoa, oh, oh, oh, this could
get a little out of control.

I'm gonna leave my rifle
right here, because
I don't wanna break it.

I can't go down
in front of it.

This thing could get out
of control and run me over.

I've got to go behind it.

I'll untie the rope, and
switch it to the back.

Hopefully I can control
it a little bit.

And then if I have
to slow it down, I'll
just jump back here.

Whoa, whoa, whoa,
ah, ah, (bleep)!

Oh (bleep), oh, man!

What happened?

Look at that, tough as nails.

Didn't even break it.

It ended up right
at my pile here.

Awesome, I made
it to the lake.

Awesome, that worked out
better than I thought.

And now that I've
got a trail broke,

all the way from the
cabin down to the lake,

the rest of it
is gonna be easy.

This is working out good.

I got my stove
down to the lake.

And then, when
the lake ice melts, I can
come back over with my

canoe and pick them up.

This is going good.

And now that
I've got a trail,

it's gonna be much
easier to get the rest
of the stuff down here.

SUE: The Arctic is such
a harsh environment.

And I say that with
the utmost respect.

It takes a lot of
hutzpah to live out here.

Um, this is bear fat.

I got several gallons
of bear fat, from the
bear I got this fall.

When I get a bear,
I use the skin,

I use some of the bones,
I use all of the meat.

Um, as much of that animal
as I can salvage and use,
by gosh, I'm gonna do it.

That's a matter of respect.

And bear grease makes an
excellent, slow-burning,
smokeless candle.

NARRATOR: In Kavik,
Sue is honing her survival
skills in preparation

for the next storm.

Today, she'll head
back out onto the tundra
to build a snow cave.

But first, she must
add an important piece of
survival gear to her arsenal.

SUE: The wicks
are kind of falling to
the side a little bit.

Um, so I'm gonna take it
outside and let the cold
air help me set them up.

And there you have it.

A nice, simple,
doesn't-take-but-a-few-minutes
set of candles.

I took an old
scrap of wood, drilled
some holes in it,

melted out my bear fat,

took an old broom,
used the cotton threads
there, made wicks,

and made my own candles.

I'm making my own light.

I'm driving this north
side now, the north
bank of the river,

and I'm looking for a
good drift area to try
and make my snow cave.

Really beautiful this
time of year out here.

Uh, the solitude, the
peace is just amazing.

But it can change like that.

Well, I think I found my spot.

This is a really good, deep,
nice area to work with.

Couple of my shovels,
couple of saws,
make my way over.

So, the trick now is
to get the shovels in, get
the saw in, get myself in,

and get working on it.

JESSIE: The most important
thing in my life is that
I really wanna succeed.

And to succeed, one
must grow every day.

Racing season's over.

It's been successful.

I've got my dogs squared away.

My goal is to go out and
enjoy my passions this summer.

And one of my passions is
going out and hunting ducks.

It's therapeutic
to just be out there,
um, in the country.

All right,
I've got my canoe,

I've got my paddle,
I've got my gun,

I'm gonna go out
and find somewhere to
go hunt some ducks at.

And the thing about
living in Alaska and,

you know, hunting, and
fishing, and all things that

come with living
off the land, you just
get better every year at it.

I mean, I come from
a place really foreign
to this environment where

it's hot all
the time and completely
different world up here,

and it takes time
to adapt to live well.

And I just enjoy every
season and understanding
the season more.

All right, I see the river.

I'm gonna stop here,
short of here and
drag my canoe in and

find a spot to start
looking for some ducks.

Good to be back
in a canoe again.

I've always felt
at home in a canoe.

I've traveled thousands
of miles before I ever even
got dog team across Alaska.

First thing I'm gonna do
to is go and take a canoe
out for a test trial,

see how I can
maneuver out here,

make sure I can, uh,
safely retrieve a duck.

Been a while
since I've been in a
canoe, since last summer.

So, I'm even gonna leave
the gun here just in case.

I don't wanna lose
the gun in the water.

Once I leave this bank,

the only thing that
keeps me safe out there
is my own competence

on the water.

Should be able
to paddle up this eddy,
I'm hoping, a little bit.

If I can go upstream
on this, that will make me
feel a lot more comfortable.

Just wanna get a good
test out on the water,

get my skill back
on the paddling.

Before I head to go
out and chase something
down the river.

Just like I made sure
that I can shoot far
enough with the gun,

I'm gonna make sure that
I can get out there quick
enough and retrieve my duck.

Found some duck.

Here they come.

That's a good sign,
but If I had had my
shotgun in the canoe,

could have definitely
took advantage of that.

That was a bunch of mallards.

That's exactly the
ducks I'm looking for.

I'm gonna go ahead and
go back and get set up.

Gonna try waiting around
and see what happens.

Be quiet,
maybe ducks swim
right in front of me,

maybe ducks fly
right overhead of me.

This is the life.

I could sit out here
all day, every day.

Watching the river
go by is therapeutic
after a long season.

Got a duck.

JESSIE:
Got to get this duck
before it goes downriver.

Beautiful duck.

Oh, man. Thank you, Lord.

I, uh, just power right
up to it, grab the duck,
and now I've got what

I need for dinner.

This is gonna make
two good meals for me.

Now, I'm gonna head on home
and, uh, on the way there,

I'm going to
process up my duck,

I'm gonna find a place
to build a fire and singe
it and get it all prepared

before I go home and
tie my canoe up right here,
because this is a really good,

high, productive spot.

Really good for me to come
back to every couple evenings
when I need some fresh meat.

Fresh meat in the springtime
after a long winter is a real
blessing to me right now.

SUE: How do I live day
to day to day to day?

I try to challenge my
fears and get beyond them.

The goal is you dig a
little channel in and then
you start widening it.

NARRATOR: Sue is
building a snow cave,

which will help her survive
if she's caught on the tundra

during a storm.

But, she must dig
carefully to avoid getting
trapped in the drift.

SUE: Wind is coming
in this winter.

It's just setting up
for, uh, faulty drifts.

Drifts that may collapse,
slough, avalanche.

I don't want that.

Uh, when you need to make
an emergency shelter,
or shelter using snow,

you really want a
nice, packed drift.

Big enough that I can put
my pad and my sleeping bag,

and a little
spot for some light.

When you choose to live
a very solitary lifestyle,

all of the chores are yours.

When the Bobcat breaks
down, I got to fix it.

Argo needs something,
I got to fix it.

If the stack
on the chimney bums
out, I got to fix it.

If I need food,
I've got to get it.

It's an active skill
set that I can apply
to my own survival.

And the other thing
I wanna do is just in
case something happens and

I got to get out,

you'll notice I'm kind of
clearing a little walkway.

I wanna make
sure that I've got safety,
not just from the elements,

but in case I have to make
an escape for some reason,

that I'm not tripping
over myself to do it.

All right, I'll get
inside, lay down, and start
smoothing the interior.

It is a chore.

It doesn't happen in
five minutes, to dig
an emergency cave.

How much space do you need?

How quickly and efficiently
can you get it done?

So, that it's
structurally sound, and
then get the hell in it.

I got to get my job done.

GLENN: Life is a process.

It's about moving
forward, learning new
things, new skills,

overcoming new challenges.

I got all the
non-burnables out of it.

Next thing to do is get
the snow off the roof.

NARRATOR: Glenn has
decided the best method of
removing an illegal cabin

is to burn it down.

But first, he must
remove snow from the roof
that can dampen the blaze.

GLENN: I never burned
a cabin before.

This gonna be fun.

It's not so much
the practical skills
you learn out here,

as the attitudes and
the character it builds.

You learn a lot of
independence,

self-confidence,
ability to deal with problems,

and not get overly
frustrated by them.

Got all the snow off,
that's important.

Because, when this snow
starts melting, under
the heat of those flames,

it'd dampen the fire down.

I want this fire as
hot as I can get it.

Yeah, there's sod up here,
which I think I'm gonna
tear a lot of it off.

Rip that sod right off.

This gonna do nothing
but smother my flames.

♪ ♪

Life out here demands a
high level of fitness.

You got to stay in shape.

GLENN: Whoa!

It really didn't
feel too good.

I came down right on
this, on my crotch.

Oh, that one just came
apart under my weight.

I probably wasn't quite
as careful as I should've
been on that old roof.

Low pitch roof,

water setting on it,
seeping through, some
of the logs have rotted.

I stepped on the
wrong one, it broke.

I fell in right
up to my crotch.

There, got all the
sod off the roof.

But before I light
this cabin on fire, I
got to think this over.

I've never burned
a cabin down before,

and I wanna make sure it
burns right to the ground.

What this fire is gonna
need is a lot of oxygen.

It's just like a wood stove.

You got to have a place
for the air to go in and a
place for it to come out.

Right here.

The air's gonna go in
right through this door.

But it needs a chimney
to get out through.

Cut a big chimney
hole right here.

My goal right now
is to turn this cabin
into a blast furnace.

But I can't just go up
and hold a match against
this to get it to light.

These are solid,
wood round logs.

I got to bring in as
much fuel as I can get.

Stack it up in
all four corners.

That way, when it gets going,

hopefully it'll get
hot enough to catch
the whole place on fire.

Okay, my last piece.

There, that's a wood pile.

It's gonna be
quite a spectacle.

I can't wait to see it.

I got to go get a match.

JESSIE: Up here you
get what you put in.

Put in good hard days'
work every day and
you'll get somewhere.

Looks like a great spot.

There's gonna
be plenty of dried wood
up here, it looks like.

Right up this bank
is the perfect place,
that I can go up there,

and start a fire and
take care of my duck.

Gonna grab some dry
branches, start my fire with.

Need to get a good
hot fire going.

And then I'll start
plucking the duck,

and what's left over
the fire takes care of.

That way you don't
lose the skin of the duck,
and that helps lock in and

seal in all the flavor.

It's kind of like how
people sear meat sometimes.

First thing I do is
remove the pin feathers.

Clean up as much feathers
out of it as I can pluck,
and then I let the fire get

rid of the rest of the feathers.

Always nice to have
a fire when you've
been out in the woods.

And out on the ice, dry out.

The point of living
this lifestyle is to
not be in a hurry,

to stop and enjoy
the places like this.

I enjoy being out here.

I'm not just out here
to get something.

If I don't get something
I'm not disappointed because
I'm out in the country

doing what I like to do.

Take off the parts
that aren't edible.

The head.

The neck's really good.

The heart, oh, nice heart.

Oh, beautiful.

Stuff my heart and
gizzard back in there.

Perfect little
spot to carry it.

Singe my duck,
got it cleaned up.

I'm ready to go home,
but you know, there's some
really nice cottonwood

buds all around here.

Some trees, I got my axe.

Some really strong medicine
that a guy can extract
from these cottonwood buds.

A bigger tree, bigger buds.

Nice buds.

I'm not a big person
in trusting western
medicine myself.

So, I like to go to
what the people of the
land have always used to

cure themselves of
ailments and it's a rewarding
feeling to me to have that

knowledge and
use it every year.

All right,
I got myself a nice bag
of cottonwood buds here.

Take home, with my duck.

And, while I'm cooking dinner,

I can start
my sav up, and I'm gonna
have myself a good batch

of sav out of what I got here.

It's a rewarding
feeling to come out here
and hunt your own meat and

get your own medicine.

For me this is my
playground out here.

SUE: Do I make mistakes?

Daily.

Do I get over it?

Every day.

I can probably
safely say that I'll
go down in history not

as Smokey the Bear's
number one enemy.

I got my fire
going pretty good,

got a little skewer here,
and I got bear meat.

This is, uh,

bear that was pushing
on the window and the
door of Kavik this summer.

And, uh, so I went
ahead and harvested him.

Now, he's helping me survive.

Having a campfire, meat
that you've harvested
and done yourself.

My little snow cave that
I'm gonna sleep in tonight,
they're skills that I honed so

that I could, I could
benefit from them.

Temperatures are starting
to really come down.

My fire is out and
my belly is full.

So, now it's time to test
out the old snow cave.

This is an emergency shelter,

that you're not gonna get
a tan and think you're at,

uh, a Mexican beach.

But, you will be able to
survive the conditions.

Light my little candles.

I got my light going,
I got my supplies, and
I got my sleeping bag.

So, I'm gonna take
this tote put it on top of
this one, bring it closer,

and that keeps me safe.

Air will get through, but
the heat won't get out.

And the animals can't get in.

I achieved a lot of
things that I haven't
done for a while.

I didn't wait until I was
in dire need to figure
out how to save myself.

Time for this little
girl to go to bed.

CHIP: Everybody's
life is hard, doesn't
matter who you are.

Life is tragic and
life is just (bleep) hard.

AGNES: Looks like
a good one, huh?

DOUG: I hope so.

NARRATOR: In Kiwalik,

Agnes and her son Doug are
hunting for seals on the ice.

It's crucial to
harvest the animal.

As the meat from one seal
will feed everyone in
camp for several weeks.

Damn it, went down.

AGNES: There are
certain seals we hunt,

and this time of the year
it's the females without pups

and if you shoot
a male seal, you know,
it's not edible because it

doesn't taste good
and it tastes ruddy.

We got a good one,
you think, yeah?

DOUG: Yeah, still up.

DOUG: Yeah, all right,
can't get a clear shot.

AGNES: When you take
a shot at a seal usually
you have one shot.

And that one shot has to count
because once you take that
shot it goes into its hole.

So, that can be a challenge.

He went down.

Well, I missed this one.

So, this one is up over
here, the second one.

So, let's try this.

I couldn't get a good aim.

I shot low.

We'll try again for
this one over here.

AGNES: When it's kind of
windy, it's kind of difficult
when you're shooting.

Sometimes, you don't
always know the range
or the size of the seal.

Sometimes a tiny little
seal look way far away,
but it's actually a tiny

little seal real
close and sometimes a real
big seal look real small.

But, it's just way far away.

And you really have to
try to pick and choose,

if you're actually
gonna take a shot.

And make sure you can
get your animal home.

AGNES: Yeah.

AGNES: His head is
right towards the.

DOUG: Left side.

AGNES: Left, yeah.

AGNES: Okay, whoa.

AGNES: Whoa, you
got it, head shot.

Once we shoot it,

we try to get to
that seal real quickly and
try to either cover the hole

or take the seal
away from the whole because
it can twitch or just move

a little bit and the whole
seal will fall down the hole.

Ah, it never moved.

Perfect shot.

DOUG: Pull it back a little.

AGNES: Holy cow, wow.

DOUG: Pull him up,
pull him back a little.

There we go.

AGNES: Wow, head shot.
DOUG: Good head shot, yeah.

AGNES: You got it, son.
DOUG: Grab the water.

AGNES: Yee!
DOUG: All right, awesome.

Go ahead.

AGNES: When we catch a seal,
out of respect, we give
the seal a drink of water.

DOUG: Okay, good.

AGNES: Yay, thank you seal.

DOUG: Yup, all right.

AGNES: Right on, good job son.

That's a real good one, huh?

DOUG: Yup.

AGNES: Nice and fat.

We'll have real good
blubber, real good skin,
real good nanuktuk meat.

DOUG: Uh-hmm.

AGNES: Full of energy.

DOUG: Yup.

AGNES: Good job son.

This is awesome.

DOUG: Tie it in the sled?

AGNES: Yeah.

Heavy as me, yeah?

DOUG: Yeah, a good hundred.

AGNES: It's like hundred
something pounds?

DOUG: 120 pounds.

AGNES: Right on, I'm so happy.

We'll work on gutting it
and stuff at home, ah?

DOUG: Yeah, yeah.

AGNES: So, we could
keep it drying.

DOUG: Keep it clean.

AGNES: Clean,
till we get it home.

DOUG: We'll might see caribou.

AGNES: Awesome, son.

Over the years, teaching
our boy how to hunt it's
been pretty exciting.

But, nowadays it's
nice for him to come and
invite me to go with him.

DOUG: Okay.
AGNES: Okay.

DOUG: All good, happy?

AGNES: Happy.
DOUG: All right.
AGNES: We're all good.

It makes me feel pretty
good and pretty proud that we
have a hunter in our family.

Just being out here and able
to actually do this seal hunt
with my son is pretty awesome.

JESSIE: Anything you
want bad enough, you're
capable of doing.

It's all about attitude.

If my attitude
is good, things are
gonna turn out great.

I got myself
cottonwood buds here.

I'm gonna go ahead and,
uh, make myself some sav.

This lifestyle comes with
plenty of aches and pains from
working hard day and night.

So, I have myself plenty
of medicine for my sore
muscles, and dry hands,

dry cracking hands.

It's good to be able to
have your own medicine
that you know works.

Now, I'm gonna remove all
this matter from the oil and
get just a pure, clean oil.

Yeah, once I get
done and separate the
buds from the oil.

I'm done with the buds.

I've extracted
all the medicinal
qualities out of them.

And then I'm going
to thicken it up with some
beeswax and put it in jars.

So, I can use it
anytime I want.

That's awesome.

That's really
good for my hands.

My hands are always in rough
shape from working hard.

They ache and hurt
more and more.

And so do my wrists
from carpal tunnel.

So, this is a really
awesome cure for that.

This would be an oil.

But what I'm gonna
make is a sav which is a
thickened version of this.

It'll actually sit on the
area that's hurting you.

Put some heat back under this.

Once it is warm enough,
I'll add beeswax in.

I like my sav to
be pretty thick.

That way it spreads it
out and lasts a while.

All right, my oil is
getting hot enough.

I don't wanna heat it up
too much because I don't
wanna cook any of the

medicinal qualities out of it.

I just got to get it
hot enough to melt this
beeswax and blend it in.

And that's what'll give
it the right thickness.

Not only am I making
medicine that's therapeutic
to me, but just being

out in the outdoors,
and smelling the smells,
and spending that quiet time.

Out here it's
not just about keeping
your body healthy,

it's about keeping
your mind healthy.

The minute you're mind
goes weak, and you got all
these dogs to take care of,

and all these miles to
put on, then you're done.

All right, cooled down
enough that I can handle it.

Beeswax is already starting
to congeal in there.

Time to put my medicine
in jars for future use.

Taking some time to take care
of yourself is very important.

I've always taken a great
pride in, is learning all the
plants where a person lives.

Because, usually
the best medicine that
a person is gonna get is

gonna come from their
own local environment.

Last jar.

Fair amount, right there.

That's plenty of
medicine for me, for the
whole year right here.

Oh, it's gonna be so good.

I'm really looking forward
to eating this duck.

I mean, there's fresh meat,
and then there's fresh duck.

From the river to my dish,
enjoy a nice meal now.

Just right, medium rare.

Hmm.

It's one of the best damn
meals I had in a long time.

Good-sized duck.

Had a lot of meat on him.

Hmm, it's an awesome
meal, well worth the trip.

Good to have a day like this.

If I'm not doing
something new, I'm
doing something wrong.

There's a lot of wood here.

It'll be the biggest
fire I ever lit.

I've never done anything
like this before.

It does make me
pause and think.

"Is this gonna go okay?"

I found some old candles here.

And these will help
out, starting the fire.

I'll stick these in a
few strategic places.

One thing I'm really
worried about is the walls
not completely burning down.

Because they're such big logs.

That's why I wanted
to use every bit of
fuel I could find.

That's a lot of fuel.

It's been a lot of work, but
I got it all set up to burn.

Okay.

I'll light it here first.

Just trying to get the
fire lit in several
different places.

There, oh wow.

It's taking off.

I just got to get it
going in this last corner.

Whew.

It's going, it's going fast.

Look straight in there.

This is amazing.

What an inferno, it's going.

You can see the air sucking
right in through the door,

it's going right
up out the chimney.

It's going just the
way I planned it.

Just like a blast furnace.

Sucking air in through
that door, straight
up out of the roof.

That is intense
heat, right there.

I really wasn't sure
how it was gonna go.

I never burned a cabin before.

But, in the end, the
preparations to burn
this place paid off.

Putting all
that firewood in there,

getting it all set up
just right with my chimney,

it all worked out.

It's gonna burn
right down to ashes.

Amazing.

That worked better than
I thought it was going to.

That blast furnace
theory sure paid off.

Restored right back
to its natural state.

Won't be long, nature
will take over again.

See the little spruce
trees starting?

These are gonna
have a chance now.

They're gonna reclaim this.

These trees will grow up.

Fireweed will come back in
just another year or so.

It'll be covered with flowers.

Life's gonna come back
and regenerate here now.

As if this cabin
was never even here.
