CHIP: Well, it's warm weather.

It's long days.

The chance of seeing a bear is
pretty good, and if not today,

definitely tomorrow, because
this is like the first, woo,

it's warm day kinda day.

We got light reflecting
off of everything,

we got clear skies.

It's like 30, 32
degrees right now.

And if a bear doesn't
wake up for that,

I don't know
what'll wake him up.

We like to get the larger
ones, the older ones.

When they come out right now,
they've got real good fat,

and they don't
taste like fish.

We might see wolves.

It's reasonably flat and hard,
so I imagine the wolves can

run really fast right now.

Since our daughters
are off to Deering to
go do the school testing,

me and the wife are going
to go back here and test out

the animals that
are living there.

Some are tasty
and some are warm.

We'll wear their dead
skins and eat their flesh.

(theme music plays)

For the next couple weeks,
I wanna ride back there.

I wanna see how well
I can do on a bear.

He's gotta be fat,
he's gotta be right,

he's gotta be fresh
out of the den.

Basically what I'm
looking for is some meat to
get us through until, like,

geese come or the fish come.

It's gonna be
the big changeover.

This is all gonna melt,
and it's gonna just melt

right into spring.

Yup, there's all kinds
of possibilities,

but we don't know
if we don't go.

CHIP: Oh, good high spot.

AGNES: Beautiful
white country, huh?

CHIP: Yeah.

AGNES: Don't see
any tracks, though.

CHIP: Bears are really smart.

That can be a pain, though,
because they can hunt you.

AGNES: And we're
hunting like they are.

We look down in.

CHIP: Yes, exactly.

AGNES: Look down in the
creeks, and the valleys,
and stuff for them.

CHIP: Ooh, whoa!

There's two somethings,
real big and dark down there.

Might be moose, might not.

Let's get down there and
let's see what those are!

Oh, yeah, those are moose.

That's what I thought.

Eight, nine of them.

AGNES: We're not
catching any moose today.

CHIP: No, we're not
catching any moose today.

From up top there,
you couldn't tell,

I couldn't tell.

AGNES: Yeah, they
look pretty big.

CHIP: Well, they're all
bunched up for protection from

predators, you know?

Could be bears,
could be wolves.

Well, shall we
continue on down?

We'll ease on down to
the river down there and

we'll go see if we can
turn up anything in the river.

Because if there's any
bear down the river,
we'll cut his tracks that way.

AGNES: Yeah.
CHIP: Is that cool with you?
AGNES: Yeah.

CHIP: Moose
oftentimes get killed,

and bears go along in the
springtime and they look for

that kind of stuff,
you know, the winter kills.

So, if we can come
across something like that,

we might get a little
lucky with the tracks then

we can start tracking.

And if there's any caribou,
the wolves will be crossing

through the area,
and we'll look for
their tracks, too.

We'll go do
it like we'd done it
for the last 20 years.

SUE: I'm used to
the crazy out here.

I am the crazy out here.

We're getting close to Kavik.

This is my south hill.
This is the north hill here.

Yup, I'm almost home.

I just got to see if
anybody else is waiting
for me that shouldn't be.

NARRATOR: After
spending the past
several weeks at her land

along the Chena River,
Sue Aikens is returning home

to Kavik for the
remainder of winter.

But conditions at the
camp are uncertain,

and she must be
prepared for anything.

SUE (over radio):
I'm looking for how
tall is the snow?

Are any buildings compromised?

Do I see any tracks at all?

Perfect scenario,
it's the world's most boring

reentry into Kavik.

PILOT (over radio):
There's been snow here.

SUE: The first thing
I notice is there's snow,

but it's not horrific amounts.

I can see
I've definitely had
some wind events,

but all the snow
that they reported
on right on the coast,

I didn't get
that much of it.

So, I think what I'm gonna
do, get as much heat going as

possible right now,
warm everything up.

I need the lights.

I need the electricity.

I want that comfort.

Will it turn?

Nope.

Oh, it's metal.

Yes.

Uh, you just do
a quick glance.

This is all the way off.

Let's get this lit.

Open this up.

Everything is cold.

If I use my bare
hands on stuff,

it may be a slight
problem for me.

Okay. I got this lit.

Come on, little
dude, catch fire.

There he goes.

It's 20 degrees inside.

So, it's not horrible,
but it is below freezing.

I want the flame
high enough that it
can start going up here.

The heat will
then heat this up,

and that heat is
gonna cause a suction,

change your pressure
systems around.

If it can't create the draft,
it'll put itself out.

It could be a super cold
night for me out here.

JESSIE: You have to be ready
for all seasons around here.

There's different
challenges that are gonna
come with every season.

So, I'm back from a
successful Iditarod run.

ANNOUNCER (over PA):

JESSIE: The madness of
the racing season's over.

Got the homestead rolling
again over the last few days.

The dogs are resting,
recuperating.

No rest for me.

I got a lot of stuff I got to
get done to get ready for the

spring season that's
coming upon us.

I got a four-wheeler that's
up river from my place,

it got stuck this fall, was
training dogs, too busy,

just went straight
to the next thing.

I got to go get this
thing out of there.

It won't be long
before these rivers start
breaking up and opening up.

I just wanna go out there and
try to get this four-wheeler

back onto some safe high
ground before the water comes.

Let's go!

Ready? Yeah.

We're losing use for
a snow machine real quick,

and I need something else
to pull the workload.

I use that four-wheeler
for a lot of stuff.

I use it to run my dogs.

Gee, straight ahead!

Haul skid logs, go
access resources.

This is a backcountry
means of travel.

The dogs are for racing, to
where I used to have to use

them for all my
utilitarian jobs,

I use the snow machine
and the four-wheeler.

So, it's essential
to have those,

because I'm not into
going backwards.

I've got a big, giant snow
machine, and some come-alongs,

and pulleys.

I ought to be able to get
it out of there somehow.

Jeez, that's water.

I definitely got my day's
work cut out for me here.

Just getting this four-wheeler
out of that spot and moved at

all is gonna be pretty tough.

I got to get this thing out
of here now while I got the

chance because water's
already coming in here.

It's a really warm day.

There's gonna be more
water coming real soon.

It's pretty froze in down
under there, that's bad.

It's real bad news.

Oh, man, yup.

This thing is not budging.

Thing is pretty froze in
here on the underside of it.

I'm gonna take
my chisel and try to keep
breaking away at some ice.

Yeah, I'm gonna try to hook
the snow machine to it,

and try to give it some yanks,
and try to break it loose.

So much ice here.

Turning out to be harder
than I thought it would be.

I thought it would be hard,
but I didn't realize all this

water was gonna
be underat.

All right, that's about as
much as I'm (bleep) chiseling.

It's just frozen
mud under there.

This isn't working, so
last-ditch effort is to tie

this up good in the
front and the back,

and try to give it
some little jolting breaks
with the snow machine.

If I can't get
it out this way,

I'm just gonna have to leave
it until it thaws more,

and hopefully the river don't
take it before I can get it.

Nothing.

It ain't coming out.

Just snapped this rope
right off clean here.

So, what I'm gonna do right
now is just tie it up into the

brush so there's no way
for it to wash away.

And I'm just gonna have
to keep an eye on it.

It's good to be stubborn
out here and get jobs done,

but it's also good to know the
limitations of Mother Nature.

That thing's not gonna come
out here until Mother Nature

lets go of it.

Hopefully the river don't
take it before I can pull
it out up onto this island.

RICKO: Being lazy is kind
of a showstopper out here,

because it ends up
costing you more.

It was good to be out
at the family cabin.

But now I'm back in Huslia,
and I got to get this kindling

chopped up, and
get the fire going.

And I got a lot of
work to do here.

NARRATOR: Ricko DeWilde
lives a nomadic lifestyle,

traveling between
camps to harvest vital
resources for his family.

After weeks at his
parents' cabin,

Ricko has traveled
ilo his grounds
in the village of Huslia.

Before the cabin can be used,

he must first provide
himself with the essentials.

RICKO: In Alaska, you've
got to have a fire.

To move around out here and
be successful at hunting and

trapping, and all that, you
got to be able to get home,

dry your stuff out,
and stay warm.

The stove I have here
is a temporary thing.

It's just a old stove that
kind of gets the job done.

It works, but I really
need to replace it.

I have one sitting
outside somewhere.

It's just buried in the snow.

I have to go look for it.

And this is barely enough
to keep the cabin warm,

and its chimney doesn't
really fit that well.

It's actually
kind of dangerous.

Temporary aluminum foil
that's supposed to be

keeping it from sucking
air, and all the warm
air be escaping out

the side of this, plus
some gaps going on here,

I could actually
see the flame.

I don't think this stove
is gonna do me any good.

I got to switch it out.

To get the bigger
stove up and running,

I got a lot of
work ahead of me.

I got to get outside,
look around, find it,

then shovel it out, and try
to drag it in this cabin,

get it set up.

I wanna be able to
thrive out here,

not hang onto my life just
trying to stay warm and dry.

This snow is deep.

Hard to find
anything out here.

Something hard down here.

Oh, yeah, there we go!

We got some metal, all right!

Yeah, this is it.

This is a heavy stove.

It's gonna be a job just to,
getting it out of the snow,

let alone dragging
it into the cabin.

(grunting)

I dug around out here a
lot looking for the stove,

and I finally found it.

So, that's great, I got
the first step done.

I'm just gonna tip it,
try to roll it over.

It's like seven times
bigger than the other stove,

so it'll burn a lot longer.

I don't have to cut
my wood up so small.

The hard part now is
dragging this thing into the

cabin and setting it up.

This thing is at least a
couple hundred pounds and it

seems like a no-brainer
job here, but, um,

I don't want this thing to
fall on me and bust my leg or

anything like that.

Because I'm a long ways
from help out here.

(grunting)

(bleep)!

RICKO: Ah, (bleep)!

Damn, I broke my steps.

I'm glad it's the
steps and not my leg,

because that thing
almost fell on me.

But I could always
repair that,

repairing my leg would've
been a lot harder.

So, I'm glad that
didn't happen.

Trying to get this thing up
without snapping another.

Damn, part of my
steps is gone,

so I'm just gonna roll it
up again and just got to be

careful not to let this thing
fall back on me if it does.

Okay, woo...

This thing is
not light at all.

All right, got
it in the house.

Try to get this
thing up and running.

Got the chimney off,
so out with the old
and in with the new.

I got to get this stovepipe
to fit in with this stove,

and I'm not sure if it's
gonna wanna fit, or if,

how I'm gonna make it fit.

I'm gonna have to tilt this.

If it wasn't so heavy
it'd be easier to do.

But this is a heavy stove, so.

Hopefully get this is
in without, you know,

dropping it on my leg.

Just like that.

I think I got it.

I have the chimney in now.

The stove is in
the right position.

I have one concern, I see a
little bit of play right here,

and up here.

It could be leaking smoke
once I start a fire.

So, I'll have to do a test.

I got to make a little fire
in here, see what's going on.

If I see smoke coming
out, I got a problem.

I can't have a smoky stove.

I mean,
you'll suffocate in this
cabin if it starts smoking.

I got the stove burning
nice and hot now,

and I don't see any smoke
coming out the bottom of the

stovepipe, or the
top of the stovepipe.

It's working.

The stovepipe's doing its job,

now all I got to
do is get outside and
buck up some firewood,

and stack it up,

and I'm set.

I could be making coffee.

I could cook.

I can get some
heat off the stove.

I'm ready to live
in this place.

SUE: An animal is not the
only predator I worry about,

people, sometimes,
are predatorial.

I had to spend a little bit
of time away from Kavik.

Upon returning,
everything's frozen.

If nobody's here to watch it,
it's gonna freeze up.

I have to bring it
back up and running.

Now, I wanna check on if
I can or cannot do power.

The sun's going down.

Yes, I have heat.

It would be nice
to have eyesight.

I might be able
to pull it off.

But I don't know
until I get inside.

The reality is I'm working
on a flashlight in camp.

The light is gonna go down.

I need to concentrate to see,
can I start my, my generator?

Got my oil dipstick,
gonna put it in,

let it sit for a minute,
pull it out, it's a little low.

It's not horrific.

I think I can crank it over,

it may take a couple
of tries and go over.

I'm following it and
making sure that everything's
turned on correctly.

Let's see if the battery
is even gonna hold.

It says, "No, thank you."
Verify it again.

It may take a few
times to, to get the
fuel to flow properly.

Cross your paws.

What I expect is
to hear a "Waaaa,"

while it accepts the load.

Didn't even bat an eye.

Baby's got electricity!

The electric Boogaloo!

Ha, ha, boo-yah,
I have lights.

I got the heat going, the
electricity's working,

machinery's going.

Really a good day to be me.

Oh man, it feels so good.

JESSIE: This is
the time for work.

This is the time that
makes it to where I can do

what I do all winter.

All right, I let
the four-wheeler sit out

there for a few days now.

The weather is
getting really warm.

I'm losing snow
really fast here.

My time's running out.

I need to get that
four-wheeler out of there.

I'm loading up everything
that I can to make sure that

I get that four-wheeler
out of there today while

I got the opportunity.

This thing's got more
pulling power than anything

that I have around here.

With this, I can pull
it from straight up,

but I need a tripod
to suspend it,

and I have a
tripod over here that I use for

lifting boat motors,
and engines, and
pieces up that I need

to lift upwards.

Pretty heavy for
transporting out there,

but this is the best idea
I got going right now,

is to use this.

Let's go, girl,
straight ahead.

Straight ahead, girls.

Hoagie, come on.

Looks like the ice is thawed
off the frame from the sun

penetrating in there.

Get on here and
start this thing up.

Starts right up!

Still a little stuck in
there, but it's moving.

All right well, Mother
Nature's done her job here and

thawed this out real good.

I got the back
end broke loose.

I'm gonna go ahead and
throw my tripod up,

and see if I can put some
pressure on this and start

pulling it loose.

Plan with this is
to set this up over
the four-wheeler,

then I can use
the chain hoist to lift
up on the four-wheeler.

The wider I have this, the
more pulling power I can get.

Oh, yeah. Okay.

Now I'm gonna
find a good spot and
secure it to the frame.

Where I wanna put my pulling
power is the front end of the

machine, because the
back end is loose now.

This method I'll be able to
put a lot of direct pull right

on the spot that's stuck.

And I'm gonna know
real quick whether it's
gonna do anything or not.

So, start cranking it up.

Yup, I can see right now this
has a lot of pull going on it.

It's definitely gonna feed,
oh, it's coming right out.

No way, awesome.

It looks like it's just
pulling it right up.

Look at that.

It's coming right out.

Yes, yeah, look at that!

This is one step closer to
getting this thing home.

I ain't there yet, but if I
got the hardest part of it done,

I guarantee you I ain't
gonna let anything in between

me getting my puppies
their four-wheeler home.

Right now, I'm gonna put my
sled right under this thing

and pull it right out of here.

All right.

It's going right up there.

Okay, whoa, whoa, whoa.

Turn it off in gear, the
brakes don't work very good.

I am up on the sled.

Next thing will be to
secure it to the sled.

I brought some
ratchet straps with me
that I can use for that.

Whatever comes in my
way at this point,

I'm getting this thing home,
and that's all that matters,

you know, is having
that attitude of
getting the job done.

The four-wheeler's secured on.

All right, hopefully
this could work.

And I have to give
it a go for it,

and not slow down
once I'm going.

Spin a little bit and back up.

Try to give it another yank.

I'm gonna try to
back up again.

Yeah, got it up!

Come on, girls.

Now that I got the
four-wheeler out,

I can cruise over this trail
to go back down to the river.

It was a little bit of a task.

I had to try a lot
of different things to get

it out of there.

Spent two days
on it, but it's worth
spending two days on.

This thing is gonna
go right to work.

CHIP: I like everything, from
my penmanship, to welding,

to being able to know when
birds are gonna fly in.

Take everything
I know and just enjoy the
living crap out of it.

NARRATOR: The Hailstones
are scouring the
Kiwalik region for bears,

to provide them with
food and warmth in camp.

But without knowing
when the bears will
wake up from hibernation,

locating one isn't guaranteed.

CHIP: Hopefully the
bears will come out.

We'll try to get them out
right when they come out,

like the day they come out.

And it's been pretty
warm, it's been 30.

Tomorrow's supposed to
be another warm day.

We just got to work it.

We got to keep our eyes open.

Got to just keep
looking for tracks.

AGNES: It's always
interesting to look around.

Some people see
nothing but white,

but I see a lot of country.

A lot of beautiful country.

CHIP: Why don't we just
keep progressing this way,

we'll make our
way up Monument,

maybe Little Monument,
and take our trail all the way

back down Candle Creek?

AGNES: Yeah,
it's a good trail.

CHIP: Yup, hopefully
we'll see something.

If we don't, we'll come back
on the same trail tomorrow and

we'll see if something's
crossed our path.

AGNES: Yup.

CHIP: We'll do that
for the couple days,

and that's what hunting
is, persistence.

Those are pretty fresh
tracks, all right.

Probably from this morning.

AGNES: Looks like.

CHIP: Going to the river.

It's in threes, like
a young wolverine,

because that's a
pretty small print.

That one would be worthwhile
getting if it were the season

for getting them, but
he's hunting like we are.

AGNES: Yeah.

CHIP: Let's keep going up
it and see if we can't cut
tracks with bear tracks.

AGNES: Yup.

CHIP: Or cut tracks
with wolf tracks.

We'll just keep
looking around,

see if the bears woke up.

AGNES: Yeah.

Hey, stop!

Stop, water!

CHIP: Aw, (bleep).

AGNES: Water on both sides.

CHIP: There's open water
there I didn't see.

AGNES: Make a circle
and get out of this,

so we can get
back on our trail.

CHIP: What we
need to do is just keep
looking for bear tracks.

And if we just
keep on keeping on,

I think we might
cross paths with one.

AGNES: We saw something
real quickly and
it looked like a wolf,

and it just dashed away.

CHIP: I caught a glimpse
of him ahead of us.

Now we're just looking
to see where he could be.

At this point we just
need to find the tracks and

then we can get on them.

So, I'm thinking since
it's on such hard,

crusty ice he's probably not
laying down much of a track.

Hopefully it was a wolf.

It was a pretty big
canine-looking animal all right,

running away, big tail.

But there's a lot
of folds and creeks,

and all kinds of places he
could put between us and him.

So, I'm gonna go to
the top of this hill.

Then we'll go down and look,
look down the other side.

Even though he was
running this way he may

be in this creek.

I'm going to
take the top of this
hill up over that way,

and we'll see if we can't cut
him off in about five miles.

AGNES: Or find a track.
CHIP: Or find a track.

This guy was just the
first one of many.

There's many, many,
many out here.

We're up on the top of a
convergence of five ridges

that we can watch.

They call this "On High,"
right over here.

People used to hike
caribou up here 12,000,
13,000 years ago.

We still do the same thing.

We're just the latest.

But the bears, and the
wolves, the caribou,

they haven't changed, and
neither has this mountain.

So, I'm looking through all
the ridgetops for predators,

and I'm looking at the ridge
bottoms for things like bears.

Bears make bigger tracks.

Their paw prints
are pretty big.

But the track they leave is
made with their belly and

their chest and their little,
short arms in the snow.

Wolves leave a track of
a bunch of paw prints,

usually right on top.

They can go pretty far,
pretty fast, pretty hard.

It'd be nice to see a
wolf making the tracks.

Well, the wind's picking
up more and more and more.

Because we're not seeing
anything track-wise.

I'm just gonna
head towards camp.

The day's getting late.

AGNES: Yeah.

CHIP: We were kind of
hoping we'd see some fur,

maybe see a bear out by now.

I guess what's, the
bears just aren't out.

We haven't seen any tracks
or any sign of a bear yet.

And there's no
wolves in sight.

But it's spring, you know.

There'll be a day when they
pop out, and we'll be on them.

RICKO: Part of getting by out
here is to make sure you stay

on top of your things, think
ahead, and be prepared.

I got my stove up and running,
so I need to buck up some

firewood and bring it in.

But first I need
to fix my steps.

I did break it
bringing that stove in,

and having it like this,
I don't wanna slip and

snap my leg
trying to bring in wood
or whatever I got to do.

Airplanes are the
only way in and out of
the villages out here,

so getting hurt is,
uh, not something you
want happen to you,

because if it's raining
or freezing rain or snowing,

you could easily
be stuck out here two,

three days without
no hospital,

and these planes can't just
fly in and out like that.

So, it's life and death
out here if you get hurt

in the wrong time.

It's nice and solid.

Exactly what I needed
to do is get my steps
all working again,

so I don't bust my leg
going up and down this thing.

I'm ready to get
some wood cut up.

Bigger wood burns
a lot longer.

I go through it a lot slower.

I don't have to burn up a
bunch of gas getting more,

so it saves me time, saves
me energy, and saves me gas.

(bleep).

This chain is definitely dull.

I was trying to get through
the rest of this wood without

sharpening it, but I think
I'm gonna have to get the file

sharpener out and touch
this up a little bit.

I've been at the cabin
on the north fork for most

of the darker
part of the winter, and I
haven't really maintained

my stuff around here.

So, a little hang up,
but I'll get it fixed.

I got a file in
here somewhere.

When you use a chainsaw with
a dull chain you're basically

burning a bunch of
fuel for nothing,

and fuel is expensive out
here at about $6.50 a gallon.

And that's not something I
wanna just be burning through.

You got to make sure
everything's running right.

If something ain't working
right you got to fix it,

because there's
a chain reaction.

You know, I keep cutting with
a dull chainsaw I'm gonna end

up messing up my bar,
messing up my chain.

I got a new bar, a new chain,

that's 140 bucks.

It's little things like this
you got to kind of stay on top

of when you're living
out here in the village,

because that chain
reaction costs you money,

and it costs you time.

We'll see how it works.

the wood bucked up.

I'm just going to carry
this in, stack it up,

and then get my new wood
stove going, cook up a meal,

and call it good.

JESSIE: I know whenever
I can do something and

I know when I can't.

I know when to call it quits.

I think that the best way to
do this is gonna be to unload

the four-wheeler
off of here and, uh,

see if I can't drive the
four-wheeler right up there.

I try to drag it up
there on this altogether,

I could end up with
both machines stuck.

Try to take a run
at it and see if I can't
just get it up there.

(barking)

I think I'm
going to tie Tempest
up to the snow machine,

because she tends
to get in front of me when
I'm doing things like this.

If she were to run
in front of me I could
mess up the whole deal.

I don't want to risk
smacking into her, either.

until I get it up there, okay?

Unfortunately, the parking
brake hardly works on this,

and I lost a little
bit of ground.

But I'm gonna figure
a way out to get the
snow machine up the bank,

hopefully not getting both
things stuck in the process,

and then I'm gonna
use the snow machine to pull

it the rest of the way up.

We'll see what happens.

Not a lot of snow
left on that bank.

It was a little bit tricky
but, uh, I'm up here now.

Now, all I got to do is,
uh, tie a good rope to this,

put the four-wheeler
in neutral.

A good yank will pull
it right up here,

and then it'll be safe.

There we go!

Just like that.

It's been a, a few days of
waiting and a couple days of

work, but I got my
four-wheeler back here.

Knot worked out real
good, didn't cinch up.

Easy to untie.

Four-wheeler's up here.

This was kind of
a major project,

coming back from the Iditarod.

I knew I was gonna have a
small window of opportunity,

hopefully, to get
this thing out.

So, it was the first on my
list of tasks to do getting

home after the dogs
were well taken care of.

Now, I'm gonna go take a
look and check out the river,

see how breakup's going.

There's a lot of gravel
between here and there,

I couldn't have took the
snow machine that way.

So, now I got something
that I can get down there
and check things out with.

Big, wide channel opened
up here in the river,

but a lot of ice still
left to come down.

Still gonna be a couple
weeks before I can
get out on the river.

Once this is all broke up,
be able to get out there in

the boat, and go
explore some new country,

and go do some hunting and
some fishing and do some

things I like to do.

Different season, time
to do different things.

It's been a long
winter season.

It's always a good sign
seeing this ice go out,

opens up new opportunities.

Out with the old
and in with the new.

SUE: Always easier to ask for
forgiveness than permission,

but the reality is live
to hunt another day.

ptarmigans out here.

I wanna finish my
stuff around the house,

but I don't have any meat.

I was just getting
up making my coffee,

heard the "Errrrrrr,"
sound of the ptarmigans,

and I thought, "Oh, wow!"

I'm kind of
meat-poor right now.

I want that blood.

I want that iron.

And there's a part of me
as a remote person, uh, as,

as somebody that
supplies their own meat,

"Get on it. Get on it."

You know, maybe
I'll fill the freezer.

Okay, I've got one down,
so that's a decent breakfast.

It's still gonna
be a tough haul,

because this is not the
easiest stuff to walk in.

But if that's the price I
got to pay for some food,

I'm okay with that.

(bleep)!

Thank you, little birdie.

I haven't had
protein in a bit.

This is gonna provide me
with some really good meat.

I don't kill lightly.

I kill because
I need the food,

and it is gonna
help me survive.

I've got some meat.

Thank you, Mr. Birdie.

Very excited about this.

So, this is just a welcome,
welcome surprise this morning,

and I thank each and every
one of these little birdies.

You don't get that in a store.

Look at that beautiful
rich, red meat.

Boy, that's a
godsend, right there.

Wasn't my plan to get
all this right now,

but I sure am grateful
and I'm gonna look forward

to the meal.

We are all opportunists.

The opportunity arose,
kablamo, I took it.

Now I've got meat,
I'll have energy,

and I'll blast
through my chores.

CHIP: In nature nothing's
wasted, it's all consumed.

AGNES: Got my gun,
my knife, binoculars.

CHIP: We'll see what happens.

NARRATOR : In Kiwalik,
Chip and Agnes are hunting

for bears as they wake
up from hibernation.

But signs of the animals have
been scarce and they must

remain diligent if
they are to bring food
and fur back to camp.

CHIP: Pretty freaking
windy, all right.

What we need to do is just
keep looking for bear tracks,

see if we see wolves
in the distance,

whatever we come across.

Nice wide, open country.

Best thing to do is keep
going low, keep looking low.

It's where the animals would
be getting out of the wind.

AGNES: Look!

Some big tracks, huh?

CHIP: Yeah, big tracks.

Well, a bear came
down from there,

dug around here earlier today.

Looks like he's
headed off that way.

Looks like a fairly
sizable bear by the tracks.

He's looking for something,
anything, to eat.

AGNES: Yeah.

CHIP: That means he's
gonna be on the move.

AGNES: There's something
making these tracks,

and we just got to follow him.

CHIP: Yup.

I'm telling you,
those tracks were probably
early this morning.

AGNES: Yup.

CHIP: Well, they go down these
creeks looking for moose.

I'm pretty sure the first
thing on their mind is a meal.

If we keep on him,
we'll get him.

♪ ♪

(gunshot)

CHIP: Oh, yeah, he's gone.

AGNES: It's a huge head.

Scary huge.

CHIP: Oh yeah, he's
definitely dead.

Young and healthy,
look at those teeth.

I'll start getting
this guy, uh, cut up.

My process here is to gut him.

And while he's still
in one whole piece I'm
gonna put him on my sled.

If I leave him
in his skin, he's,

he's a much more protected,

the meat is
much more protected.

But you're not killing
the bear out of hate,

you're killing the bear
out of your need for food.

There's no anger involved.

There's no madness.

You know, we wanna eat him,
so that's why I hunt him.

I'm not hunting for a rug.

AGNES: Homeward bound?

CHIP: Homeward bound.

AGNES: I enjoyed this
hunt, even though.

CHIP: Yeah, me too!

AGNES: It took a
couple of days.

Well worth it.

Especially our time
together out here, huh?

CHIP: Yup, our time together
out here is always the best.

We're not here to kill
him because we hate him.

There's just so many
uses for him and you're
just happy for it all.

You're supposed to be happy.

That's how you show respect.

And when you get home your
kids are happy for it all.

But that's the
reason why we camp.

We get up a load, take
it home to the kids.

AGNES: This is a big load,
this is a good load.

Whoa, hold on.

CHIP: Huk, we had
to earn this guy!

AGNES: Yeah, his is an
awesome life, thank you.

CHIP: You're welcome,
I'm glad you follow.

AGNES: I love to follow.

CHIP: Well, I ain't
leading nowhere right now,

except to bed.

AGNES: You did
good, all right.

CHIP: We did good.
AGNES: We did good.

RICKO: The simplicity is
what keeps you alive out here.

I was out at my family cabin
for most of the dark winter.

So, it's good to
be back in Huslia.

My place wasn't really
set up as good here,

because I wasn't
around for a while.

But now with this bigger
stove in I'm able to cook,

able to dry my stuff.

I'm pretty much
settled in now.

In other parts of the
world if you want heat,

you just turn the dial
up on the thermostat,

and you got more heat.

If it gets too hot,
you turn it down,

it gets a little colder.

It's a pretty easy life,
and that sounds real nice,

but getting things done
on my own like this is,

it's real satisfying because
it gives me a purpose in life.

Everything I'm doing
is for a greater cause.

I can't get bored.

If I'm bored, I'm dying.

I got to stay moving to stay
alive out here and be able to

fix things on my own
and do things on my own.

It's looking delicious.

Smelling good.

I got a hot meal,
I got a hot stove,

and it's very satisfying.

I'm ready to explore out
here, check out the land.

I got a lot of hunting,

a lot of other stuff
to do around here.

It's a good beginning, today.

SUE: Nature will right
itself given enough time.

While that's getting hot,

I got some of my
fermented fireweed.

I'm probably going to be
stunned for the next few years

at just how well this,
uh, opening up went.

The landing went
pretty smooth.

My buildings were
not destroyed.

No big predators going,

"Argh,"
wanting a Sue sandwich.

The generator started well.

I feel very grateful to
have gotten these ptarmigans,

and this protein does
me a world of good.

It feels like I'm finally
coming into my own.

It feels like I'm, I'm
finally greased the wheel

the right way and
things are flowing.

So, here's to me,
here's to Kavik,

and here's to being home.

It's a great feeling.
