TAPS is headed
to Walton Kentucky

to investigate Gaines Tavern,

a historic home
that's also known to locals

as the Kentucky Horror House.

And this is
an interesting place.

I mean, it's been there
since like 1814.

The place
has had tons of people

throughout hundreds of years
coming through there.

You've had a bunch of people
who have taken

their own lives,
there's been murders,

and there's been
claims at this place forever.

When you have that kind
of traumatic history

at a property, there's bound
to be some remnants.

And the house sits smack dab
in between two railroad tracks

and there's the belief that
the energy from the tracks

produce and carry
paranormal activity

which could explain why
Gaines Tavern is so active.

The tavern's owned
by the city,

it's been closed
for renovations

but they wanna be able
to allow the public

to come back into it.

I mean, you know,
you have the renovations,

of course, that usually kicks
up stuff and being closed.

When you go in there
all of a sudden,

it's like all the stuff
is happening.

Right.

it might be it.

And there it is.

These tracks

We don't often have a mayor
for a client.

You must be really concerned
about the property?

Yeah, a lot of people in town

- really love this place.
- I see.

So what's some of the history
of Gaines Tavern?

Abner Gaines, he had
the first tavern in Kentucky.

In 1818,
Gaines saw an opportunity

to turn his tavern into
a thriving stagecoach stop.

Travelers were constantly
taking a stagecoach

between Lexington
and Cincinnati,

and his tavern
was a convenient place

to stop overnight.

Now this being a tavern,
did it see

its share of violence
back then?

Yes.

There was a murder
during a ball,

uh, upstairs in the ballroom.

William Northcutt
and Richard Harrison

were both sweet on the same
farmer's daughter

and William Northcutt
pulled the wig off

of Richard Harrison
and showed everybody

that he was bald
and Richard Harrison

then turned around

and stabbed Mr. Northcutt
with a dagger.

Ooh. Okay.

So who else has died
in the house that you know of?

Abner Gaines died here,

his daughter Harriet
died here.

She was five years old.

There were also four people

who tragically
took their lives here

in the 1800s.

Well, what kind of things
are going on here

that's got everybody
concerned?

Down here in this room,

there's been sightings
of a little girl,

usually during the day.

Did people think
that little girl

is the Gaines daughter
that passed away?

Some do, yes.

I was on City Council
when we purchased

the Gaines Tavern

and was mayor
when it was opened

for live tours.

I also helped on
the restoration of the house.

One young lady who was here
helping us asked me

how old was the little girl
that passed away in the house.

And I said,
"Well, Harriet was around

five or six years old."

"Well, she watched me
vacuum today."

We were having an event here

and the piano was playing,

and a lady made a remark
that a young girl told her

she liked it when the piano
was playing.

And there is no girl

- in the house?
- No.

Are there any
other strange encounters

on the first floor?

Oh, there's quite a bit here.

We walked into the front room
of the house with the mayor

at the time
and I felt something

brush up against me

and I thought
it was my daughter.

She wasn't there,
she was actually

on the other side
of the room.

I had, like, a gut feeling
of dread.

Other unnerving experiences

on the first floor
include objects being moved

and the front door
slamming shut

with no explanation.

Now I've also heard
a lot about voices, footsteps,

and you've seen
shadow figures?

Yes.

My brother and I
went upstairs

in the master bedroom

and we were next
to the fireplace mantle

and we heard out loud
a voice say, "Get out."

The hair raised on my neck
when I heard that.

I wanted to flee.

We've got a lot of activity
on the second floor,

there's been sightings
of a man and a little girl

in the window.

We were doing our tour
and a woman,

kind of, hung back and asked

if she could show me
her pictures

and I was surprised to see

what looked like an old man,

he was bald
and he was in this window

and then another picture
in the same window

of what looked to me, like,
a little girl with braids,

that was kind of scary.

Those aren't
the only apparitions

seen on the second floor.

Sometimes during the day

when you're looking up
into the window,

towards the back
of the house,

you can see the reflection
of a man.

I've seen it from outside
multiple times

and it's pretty creepy.

The second floor
is not only

where William Northcutt was
stabbed to death at a ball

but two men
also took their lives

in what is known
as the suicide room.

Visitors have encountered
strange experiences there.

So on one of the tours here,

three or four of us stayed
behind in the suicide room,

all of us looked down
at this bed

that we had just heard
described

in all these awful deaths

and right before our eyes,
we witness it compress

as if someone sat down
right in front of us.

Seeing that was one
of the creepiest experiences

I've had here.

The Gaines Tavern is haunted,
absolutely 100%.

For some reason the people
who have been connected

with this building have just
decided not to leave.

When it comes down to it,
what are you hoping

that we're able
to accomplish here then?

I'd just like to make sure
everything's safe

and get this thing back open,

and allow people
to enjoy this,

you know,
Walton wouldn't be here,

uh, as it is now
if it wasn't for this house.

on or near this property.

there's been, uh, a murder,

there have been, uh, people
just dying of natural causes.

So there's a lot
to really dig into here.

that has a traumatic death

whether it be murder
or somebody dying suddenly

can hold that energy

and this property does have
a pretty rough history.

We're looking at a property
that had people

who were murdered here.

So we got to take
that into consideration

and also wonder if some
of those traumatic deaths

lead to the activity

that's going on
in this property now.

First is the death
of Benjamin Runyan.

He had shot himself
in the night.

The second death
was Mayor John Goods on.

He had come on hard times.

And he was playing cards
and when he finished the game,

he went upstairs

and the people
that was downstairs

- heard the gunshot...

In the same room.

Again, somebody that just

really wasn't wanting to live.

So it wasn't
that he lost lot of money

- playing cards?

Well, you can speculate
on a lot of things.

So we know he liked
to play cards.

Do you know of any female
deaths that took place there?

Yes.
There was actually a woman

who was here visiting family.

She went to the orchard,

doused herself
with coal oil...

- And then set herself

- on fire.

And while she was burning,

she ran back to the house

and told her family,

"I just don't want
to live anymore."

- Oh, my God.
- While she was on fire?

While she was on fire.

And at that point, she had
let herself burn enough

that there was absolutely
nothing they could do

and she died of her burns.

- That's awful.

- Lizzie Rice.

20 years prior to that,

her father killed himself
the same way.

that came through
and activity spiked up.

We started getting voices
and walking and movement,

and actual voices.

It sounded like
it might have said,

There are theories about,
you know, lightning storms

helping to charge the air

and helping
paranormal activity happen.

There's claims of activity,
uh, near railroad tracks.

Could it be
the perfect storm?

I'm not saying
that's what's happening here

but there has been some
paranormal activity

that's going on here

and some really strange
occurrences,

so it's one of the most
interesting properties

I've been to
in a long, long time.

in the upper bedroom.

There was a woman named
Lizzie Rice

who actually lit herself
on fire

and passed away,
uh, in one of the backrooms.

And right here
on the first floor,

as soon as we came
in to start investigating,

there was a female talking
and that didn't sound young.

- It sounded mature.
- Yeah.

And that was in the area where
Lizzie set herself ablaze.

So it's very possible
she could be behind

that woman's voice.

Is it just us in here?

In the house, yeah.

At one point, Shari and I were
investigating the living room

and she saw what appeared
to be a black mass

walk by the window.

Nobody was there.

Um, at another point,

Dave and Shari were upstairs
in the second floor bedroom

and they started
hearing sounds

like somebody playing spoons.

It does sound like it.

That's not an uncommon thing.

What do you mean?

It's, kind of,
an old tradition.

- Right. Yeah.
- Then you tell us

if this sounds like them

because they heard it and
they were a little baffled.

Okay.

Wow.

Yeah.

- Is it...
- Yeah, that's spoon.

That's somebody jamming them
on their, uh, on their heel.

Now, one of the claims also
is this Harriet Gaines.

Dave and I, we were upstairs
investigating

and he heard a giggling sound,

you know, like a young girl.

- So take a listen.
- Okay.

Hello.

Yeah, sounds like
a young giggler.

That's kind of, cool.

It's possible that that giggle

could have been Harriet's.

Hello?

Shari and I were investigating
around the first floor.

I don't wanna tell you
what it sounds like,

so I'll just...
I'll play it for you

and see if you're able
to pick it up.

Yeah. All right.

They're watching us.

They're watching us?

It's exactly what
we thought we heard.

Oh.

That's freaking wild.

Oh, there was
just a voice there.

Now that could show that

there might be something here
with some intelligence,

- some conscious thought.
- Yeah.

This last one was really

the most interesting
to myself.

Shari and I were upstairs,

we're in the front bedroom
near the room with the tub.

Okay.

And all of a sudden,
this voice happened,

and we'll get your take.

I'm just looking for you.

He said Jason.

Uh, yeah.

It was weird.

When we come in to a place,

we actually introduce
ourselves.

It could be somebody
that was here in the house

interacting with him

but it does seem like
it acknowledged

- that you were in the room.
- Yeah.

It was in the same room
that we were in.

Oh.

With all the tragic events,

it's possible that some spirit

remained tied
to this location,

so there definitely seems
to be activity here

and, uh, some
strange things going on.

- Mmm-hmm.
- But I don't think

there's anything
to be frightened about

in regards to this place
opening up

because we think it's safe.

Oh.

It could be pretty awesome
for people to know

that they could be in here

and experience
a moment of history.

And it doesn't necessarily
have to be scary.

Right. I'm fascinated.

I felt the investigation

It's reassuring to know that
my whole town is not crazy,

that these things
are happening,

but now I don't feel that

anybody was gonna be
in any danger.

so many deaths crammed in
to one tavern.

And then to have
all these experiences

and then letting
the mayor here.

He was able to hear everything
that we heard.
