a very musical family.

Around elementary school
is when we started performing

We did some, like,
fake break dancing moves

I've pretty much
played everywhere

you can play in L.A.,
at least the smaller venues.

Life as an independent artist
is super hard

because there's so many people
that want to do what I do,

I'm Sydney. I'm 25.
I'm from Ogden, Utah.

We are strolling Ogden's
historic 25th Street.

It's a good place to be from,

but there are not
many musicians,

I don't think,
there's a lot of Ogden.

Growing up, music was always
a huge part of, you know,

just my childhood and my life,

and I really have to credit
my dad for that.

For my sister and I,
he would play his guitar,

like, sing us to sleep
at night.

Most kids, when they're
going to bed at night,

like, they're asking
their parents

for just one more bedtime story,
you know.

But for my sister and I,

it was always, like,
just one more song.

So unfortunately,
when I was six or seven,

my parents got divorced,

and my mom fell into
a bit of a drinking problem.

She did suffer from alcoholism.

She wasn't able to be around

as much as any of us
would have liked.

There was nothing I loved more
than my kids,

and then I was
just hurting my kids.

Um, I'm sorry.
It's really hard to talk about.

[ Sniffles ]

It was tough,
but when I was about 15,

Mom really, you know,
beat the odds and it was like,

"Hey, I'm back to stay."

My mom supports me a ton
in my music.

She's a huge dreamer,
like I am.

I'm so proud of her --

that everything
that she's gone through

to get to this point
is incredible.

This opportunity
honestly kind of brings

everything full circle
for my family and I.

To have them
be able to support me here,

it means the entire world.

when it came in --

just the vibe of what you do
is what I liked.

My current day job --
when I'm not playing music,

I do a little landscaping
on the side.

We've been planting
some flowers.

It's not a bad job at all.

I've done worse jobs,
we'll put it that way.

I formed my first band
in college.

We needed a drummer,
and my bass player said,

"My brother, Will, plays drums,"

and me and Will just
hit it off like that.

He's a phenomenal drummer.

Just a happy-go-lucky
Grade-A guy.

We loaded up in a van
and really wherever

they'd let us bang on a guitar
and we could make

a little money,
that's where we were headed.

Last year, I got a call
from a friend.

He said, "Will was in
a car wreck, um, earlier today."

And he was just gone --
gone way too early.

We had always talked about

[voice breaking] we were gonna
grow old together.

We were gonna sit on the porch
and we were gonna play music

when we were old and gray

and we were gonna
tell stories, you know?

It really put it in perspective.

You don't know
how much time you have.

Will is in my heart
every time I sing,

and part of knowing
that he's there is what gives me

a little bit more of that soul
and knowing that feeling,

whether it's the happiness

from the all the great times
that we spent together

or the sadness from
losing him way, way too early.

It's crazy that I'm moments away

from performing
in front of these coaches

that I've watched with my family
since Season 1.

The show really brought
our family together.

My cousins and I,
we used to play "Voice"

and take little chairs
and pretend to be the coaches,

and our family
would be the audience.

It was super fun.

My name is Parijita Bastola,

I'm 17 years old, and my family
is originally from Nepal.

Nepal is located
in Southeast Asia,

in between India and China.

Being Nepalese is very important
to my identity

and who I am as an artist.

I love eating
my Nepalese food

and really being wrapped up
in my culture.

My parents came to the U.S.
about 25 years ago

to flee from
political unrest in Nepal,

and then they tried
to bring my sister,

but with immigration,
it did not work out,

so they had to put her
in a boarding school in India.

My sister and my parents
were separated for 11 years.

This was very hard on my family.

Even though we were half
a world apart,

we were still able to maintain
a connection through letters.

She would send me her
favorite songs, like Shakira

and Beyoncé and Alicia Keys.

This kind of R&B influence,

it became a huge part
of who I was.

is R&B and soul.

and of their roots into the
wider global landscape of music.

that kind of transcendent voice,
