the Greater Prairie Chicken.

The Greater Prairie Chicken
is the only wild chicken

in the United States, but-

who is not a Greater Prairie Chicken.

The Greater Prairie Chicken
is a grassland bird.

It eats grasshoppers,
ants, and leafhoppers

and lives only two to three years.

During mating, the male Prairie Chickens

do a dance while pluming.

They stomp their feet on the ground,

flutter, jump, spread their
tail feathers out like a fan

and fluff up the sacks on their necks

to attract female chickens.

Female Prairie Chickens build
their nest on the ground

and use tall grass as shelter.

She pulls feathers from
her chest to line the nest.

In the spring, she lays
about a dozen eggs.

Oh, that's charming.

She keeps them warm
for 25 days until they hatch.

The Greater Prairie
Chickens have many enemies

including possums, raccoons, and skunks.
