Episode 50

It's finished. Her Majesty's wreath is finished.

No, that's not possible.

Her Majesty won't...

That's impossible...!

Your Highness...!

My Queen! My Queen...!

Your Majesty! Your Majesty...!

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty...

My Queen, please...

My Queen, you must gather your strength.

My Queen, please!

Gather your strength, My Queen!

Your Majesty, it has to be her. It has to be Consort Choi.

Only then will the Crown Prince and Prince Yeon Ing...

...both be safe.

- My Queen! - Your Majesty...

Please don't forget...

Please... please do this...

...in order to protect the Royal Throne.

My Queen!

My Queen!

Please open your eyes! You can't go!

- You can't go! - Your Majesty...

No! I won't let you!

No, don't go! You can't go like this!

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

You can't go like this!

Your Majesty! You can't go like this!

You can't go like this!

Your Majesty!

Your Highness, you're going to fall down!

- Your Highness! - Hurry up!

Your Majesty!

- Your Highness! - Lady Bong, what's going on?

- Why is everyone crying? - Your Highness...

- My Lady...! - Ae-Jong...

Mother!

Has the Queen passed away, Mother?

Geum...

But I finished the wreath.

They say that if we hang this up, all the diseases will run away.

Geum...!

Your Majesty...

Geum...

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty..!

Your Majesty!

Oh, Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

Mother!

- Mother! Mother..! - Yes.

She's dead. The Queen is dead.

What? Are you sure?

Yes! We're saved!

- It's over! - We're saved!

- We're going to be all right. - It's over, Hee-Jae!

My Queen...

Your Majesty...

Don't forget, Consort Choi that...

I am happy that I met you...

I am glad that I had a friend like you.

I am so thankful and happy...

...that I was able to serve a Queen who called me a friend.

I won't forget, Your Majesty.

I will never ever forget your warmth and friendship towards me.

Your Majesty...

Your Majesty...

Geum...

You must never forget Her Majesty.

You must never forget how much she cared for both you and me.

Yes, Mother.

Yes, Your Majesty. We will survive.

As I promised to you, we will survive in this place.

I will protect this child.

- Is Her Highness in? - She's been waiting for you, My Lord.

Your Highness, Lord Jang is here.

Your Highness.

How did it go?

Everyone should have gathered by now.

Welcome, Third Councilor.

The Chief of the Soron Faction, Third State Councilor Lord Im Sang Hyun?

Yes, Your Highness.

The West Faction's Soron members have given us their support.

It is only natural that as mother of the Crown Prince...

...you are reinstated as Queen.

Now that we have the Soron Faction's support,

The few members of the Noron faction who used to support the Queen...

...will not dare to breathe out loud.

Yes, Your Highness.

- Then I will consider this a consensus. - Yes, Your Excellency.

The shaman must be moved to a safe place.

She must not be seen by anyone. Do you understand?

Yes, My Lord.

So... do you recognize this?

Yes, this is the knife I made for Lord Jang Hee-Jae.

Are you certain?

Yes, it was when he was Police Superintendent.

My Lady...

We confirmed Jang Hee-Jae's men making contact with the shaman.

We found out that after Her Majesty's death,

She was transferred to the foot of Mt. Chungam.

She performed a black magic rite praying for Her Majesty's death.

It's to be expected that she went into hiding.

We have also confirmed that this knife belongs to Lord Jang Hee-Jae, Your Highness.

The craftsman will testify that it belongs to him.

If we seize the shaman,

We will be able to prove that they performed a ritual against the Queen.

But we must not be careless.

First we must watch them, and move only when we can get them.

Yes, My Lord.

I'm still bothered by the nurse who disappeared.

We have to find her in order to prove the Crown Prince's condition.

Even if we uncover Consort Hui's guilt,

If the Crown Prince ascends to the throne,

Consort Choi and Prince Yeon Ing will be in danger.

It's certain they don't know where she is either,

...so where could she be?

Two months have passed already.

But the fact that nothing has happened shows that...

Consort Choi didn't find the nurse either.

So where... where could she be?

Let's go.

Have you decided to stand behind Consort Hui and the Crown Prince, My Lord?

Stand behind them? If Consort Hui becomes Queen, then yes...

Because even with his condition,

The Crown Prince will still be able to become King.

- Then should we get rid of the nurse...? - Slowly.

We can do that after Consort Hui has moved into the Queen's Palace.

Before that happens, we must give ourselves a way out.

Anyone there?

Send for Prince Yeon Ing.

His Highness is at the East Palace.

- He's with the Crown Prince again? - Yes, Your Majesty.

~ Recites passage from Great Learning ~

Really? You can interpret it that way too?

Yes, that's what my Master said.

~ Recites passage from Great Learning ~

One interpretation is that everything begins when there is realization.

But he said that it can also be interpreted as endless effort and personal drive.

I see. That sounds logical!

I'm really enjoying studying with you. I thought the Classics were so boring before.

Me too!

Now that I'm studying with you, Older Brother...

Older Brother?

Forgive me, Your Highness. I must have offended you...

Children outside the Palace call their older brothers as "Older Brother".

I didn't intend to call you that.

No, don't say that!

Older Brother? I like hearing you call me that.

What?

So when you're with me,

...call me Older Brother, instead of Your Highness.

Really? Can I really call you "Older Brother"?

That's what I said!

Now it's my turn. I'll teach you calligraphy.

No, Older Brother, let me do that.

Grinding the inkstone is normally done by the younger brother.

Older Brother, why are you laughing?

You rascal, I thought you were a prodigy because you memorized all the Classics.

But you're still a young child.

Come over here.

Is there something on my face?

You got ink all over your face.

Look at this!

What are you doing, Crown Prince?

- Mother... - Your Highness.

- Geum. - Mother.

Geum...

What did I say?

I told you not to get close to Prince Yeon Ing.

But he's my brother, Mother.

- How can you...? - Your brother? Who?

- Prince Yeon Ing is your enemy! - Mother!

My son...

I will not repeat myself.

Do not allow Prince Yeon Ing into the East Palace again.

- I won't do that! - Crown Prince!

Prince Yeon Ing is a good-natured and kind boy.

I like him. How can you tell me he is my enemy?

How can you be so naive? Prince Yeon Ing is Consort Choi's son.

Consort Choi is using him to destabilize your right to the throne.

What will happen if he finds out about your condition...!

My condition? What do you mean by that, Mother?

Mother!

So did His Highness teach you calligraphy again?

Yes, Mother. Older Brother told me to come again tomorrow.

Older Brother?

Oh, I'm only supposed to call him that when we're alone.

Did the Crown Prince tell you to call him Older Brother?

Yes, Mother. He said that he preferred to be called that.

Indeed. How lucky you are.

His Royal Highness is such a good older brother to you.

Yes, Mother.

I used to be envious of the other boys who had older brothers.

Now that I have an older brother too, it makes me so happy!

- Where is Her Highness? - Inside. What happened?

Your Highness, it is Lady Bong!

- Your Highness! - Why are you so frantic?

Your Highness, the South Faction and Soron Faction have gathered at the Great Hall.

They're going to petition His Majesty to promote Consort Hui as Queen.

My Lord, did you hear the news?

Yes, it's finally happening.

What did you say? The appointment of the Queen?

How can we discuss this matter when it's only been a short while since the funeral?

Your Majesty,

The position of Mother of the Nation cannot be empty for one moment.

How can you delay such an important event?

Third Councilor!

Consort Hui is the mother of the Crown Prince.

For the sake of the future King,

The Crown Prince's mother should become Queen.

Please heed our plea, Your Majesty!

Please heed our plea!

Your Highness!

Chun Soo...

We have no more time to delay, Your Highness.

We must seize the shaman and inform His Majesty about Lord Jang's knife.

- Your Highness! - Tell His Majesty...

Tell him everything...

Even if we don't find the nurse, His Majesty will believe you, so...

Chun Soo, do you know where Prince Yeon Ing is right now?

He's at the East Palace,

...together with the Crown Prince whom he calls Older Brother.

The Crown Prince told him he would teach him how to play "Tuho".

Your Highness!

Watch closely.

Watch.

I know, Chun Soo...

If Consort Hui becomes Queen, Prince Yeon Ing will be in great danger.

And if the Crown Prince ascends to the throne,

Then he would be in even more danger.

That is why I am so afraid.

I want to protect Prince Yeon Ing.

But to save him,

The Crown Prince will fall into danger.

- Your Highness, that is... - Yes, I know.

I know this is how the Palace and politics work.

But neither the Crown Prince nor Prince Yeon Ing know politics.

They are only brothers who care about each other.

Your Highness...

This troubled me endlessly after Her Majesty's death.

In order to save Prince Yeon Ing, I must push the Crown Prince aside.

But will that really help him?

So what are you going to do?

Your Highness!

I will protect Prince Yeon Ing.

His life and his heart...

I will protect everything.

Your Majesty, the Ministers have reason to...

That's enough. You may leave.

I've had enough nagging at the Great Hall.

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty...

I have one last request.

Your Majesty...

You must appoint Consort Choi as Queen.

- My Queen..! - Consort Choi...

...will protect the Crown Prince.

She will support him.

You must do this, Your Majesty...

...so that both the Crown Prince and Prince Yeon Ing will be safe.

Those were the Queen's last words to me.

She thought that if Consort Hui were to become Queen,

Consort Choi and Prince Yeon Ing would be in danger.

- But, Your Majesty... - I know.

I know it's going to be difficult.

Consort Choi was born as a slave,

And Consort Hui is still the mother of the Crown Prince.

But more importantly, Consort Choi... Dong Yi...

She would not want this.

I know that well.

That's why I feel so frustrated.

I don't know what to do.

Your Majesty...

If only I could trust Consort Hui.

- What? Consort Choi? - Yes, Your Highness.

Your Highness!

- Your Highness! - Oh, My Lady!

Where is Her Highness?

I don't know. She's not with His Majesty either.

Do you think she could have left the Palace?

She's been so good lately! Where could she have gone now?

She's vanished without any of her attendants.

We've been lax lately.

You should have guarded her properly. What do we do now?

So why have you come here without any of your attendants?

That's because no one must know that I came to see you.

What?

Because this has to be a secret between the two of us.

- What is this? - Please open it.

This...!

What is this...?

This is evidence that your brother, Lord Jang Hee-Jae, and your mother...

...used a shaman to perform black magic against the Queen.

What...?

The two of them brought a shaman into the Palace.

They cursed the Queen, Your Highness.

- That shaman is with us. - Enough!

How dare you make such accusations!

Are you trying to frame me because you can't get rid of the Crown Prince?

Do you think I'll cower at your threat?

Do you think that I'm unaware of your plot with the Queen...

...to harm the Crown Prince?

Now that you've lost the nurse who knows his secret,

...you want to use me against the Crown Prince!

I will give this to you, Your Highness.

- What...? - I'm going to give this evidence to you.

What did you say?

Her Highness may voluntarily walk into danger?

- My Lord... - Inspector Cha!

What did you say? You're going to give this to me?

Yes, Your Highness. This act is considered high treason.

But I know that you didn't know about this,

...and that you can't kill a person this way.

What is the meaning of this? What are you trying to accomplish by...?

Neither will I tell His Majesty...

...about the Crown Prince's condition, Your Highness.

Therefore, the Crown Prince will ascend to the throne.

What... what is your purpose in telling me this?

Why are you doing this?

I... I wanted a chance.

What?

You and I and... the Crown Prince and Prince Yeon Ing...

I wanted to give all of us a last chance.

I want Prince Yeon Ing to have a life, rather than power.

A precious life that is filled with things more important than power.

So what you fear most will never happen.

Won't you trust me?

Won't you let the Crown Prince and Prince Yeon Ing...

...live together as loving brothers?

When I returned to the Palace and saw you...

I told you that I didn't forget anything.

But in that memory of mine,

I also remember the first time I met you.

I want to trust you like I did then.

I want to believe that we all...

...have this final chance.

Your Highness!

- Your Highness! - Your Highness, where have you been?

I'm sorry. Did you look for me?

How can you even ask us that?

Bad things have happened here lately, and we were so worried!

It's been a while since we played Hide and Seek. You didn't enjoy it?

Your Highness!

Dong Yi.

Your Majesty!

Did you go somewhere?

- I went out for some fresh air. - Is that so?

Then you should have come to me. I'm upset that you went alone.

I thought I would see you all the time when you returned to the Palace.

But you're with Prince Yeon Ing all the time.

So you're jealous of Prince Yeon Ing, Your Majesty?

Yes, that's right.

That rascal, he should share his mother with his father.

So what is troubling you?

Is it what's been going on in the Palace?

The petitions regarding appointing Consort Hui as Queen?

- Your Majesty, I... - Can you trust me, Dong Yi?

No matter what I decide,

...and no matter what burdens you will have to bear,

I will not let you go through it alone.

Your Majesty...

- Summon the Chief Secretary! - Yes, Your Majesty.

This is a decree regarding Consort Choi's appointment.

It will be carried out in three days.

Take care that no word is leaked about this beforehand.

Yes, My Lord.

I'm here.

What? Consort Choi is to be appointed as a Royal Noble Consort?

Yes, My Lord. There were even orders to keep it quiet.

He's promoting Consort Choi at a time like this?

- That means... - My Lord!

It's Consort Choi!

His Majesty is taking steps to make Consort Choi as a Queen.

She's just testing me.

She must have an ulterior motive.

But in that memory of mine,

I also remember the first time I met you.

I want to trust you like I did then.

I'm here to see His Highness.

His Highness is in the garden with Prince Yeon Ing.

- What? Again? - I'll send someone to the garden.

No, just leave them be.

- Is this Prince Yeon Ing's book bag? - Yes, My Lord.

All right. You may leave.

If things go well, we can get Prince Yeon Ing.

Consort Choi is using him to destabilize your right to the throne.

What will happen if he finds out about your condition...!

Older Brother, did you see? I got five in!

Yes, well done.

Now it's your turn.

- Prince Yeon Ing. - Yes?

- Can you help me? - With what, Your Highness?

Your Highness!

- I've come to see you. - Yes, Your Highness, please come in.

All right.

Is this where you make my tonics?

What brings you here, Your Highness?

I was just passing by.

I've been too indifferent when you've been so diligent.

Your Highness...?

I thought I would stop by and commend you to your superior.

Where is he right now?

You honor me, Your Highness.

Good work, everyone.

This is it!

Older Brother wanted me to find out what herbs were being used.

That is Dangui.

- This is mulberry root, and this is... - You've come, My Lord.

What do I do?

So you want to find the condition that these herbs are used for, right?

That's right.

- Found it! - Really?

Here it is. This condition uses all the herbs I found.

It's called infertility.

- Infertility? - That's right.

What's wrong, Older Brother?

How could this be?

Older Brother...

Is it a serious illness? Is it life-threatening?

Your Highness, this is...

Consort Choi knows everything. She gave this to me.

She said she wouldn't say anything about the Crown Prince.

She said his position would be safe.

No, Your Highness! You can't possibly believe her.

Brother...

This is a trap! Don't you know her wily ways?

She's fooling you!

What do you mean, Your Highness?

You want us to stop investigating Consort Hui?

- Your Highness. - Please. Please give me some time.

- Your Highness! - Your Highness...

- My Lord. - Consort Choi is up to something.

Inform the Third War Minister about this, and tell him I will go and see him.

Yes, My Lord.

- Tie her. - Yes, sir!

Why are you doing this? Where are you taking me?

- Please have mercy! - Let's go!

And the nurse?

We moved her to the designated location.

Those men...

They're Royal Guard Chief Suh Yong-Gi's men!

Yes, My Lord.

You must have been surprised that I wished to see you.

Why have you asked to see the Chief and myself, My Lord?

We've brought the nurse.

- Take her to the storehouse. - Yes, sir!

- That girl... - She's the nurse who disappeared.

What? You have the nurse from the East Palace that we've been looking for?

Yes, Chief Suh.

The nurse who knows the Crown Prince's secret.

I asked to see you so that...

I could hand her over to you and Consort Choi.

My Lord!

What is your reason for doing this?

Reason? What other reason could there be?

It is to make sure our government and nation is ruled properly.

The Third War Minister handed over the nurse to the Royal Guard Chief?

Yes, Your Highness! Jang Mu-Yeol has betrayed us.

He took the nurse from under our nose and is using her to work together with them.

Keep silent about the Crown Prince? Consort Choi said she's going to trust you?

She wants a last chance?

This was it! This was her plan to finish you off.

What did I tell you? I told you this was all a plot against you.

She has fooled you!

She placated you with her words and plotted against your back.

- Is something troubling you, Geum? - Mother?

Why do you keep sighing?

Well... Mother, the Crown Prince...

Please keep this a secret, Prince Yeon Ing. Can you do this for me?

Yes, Older Brother.

This is a promise made between two men. I swear it!

Geum!

Mother, it's time for my studies. I have to go.

My Lord!

Tell them to carry out the plan.

- We will seize Prince Yeon Ing. - Yes, My Lord!

Move!

She wants a last chance?

This was it! This was her plan to finish you off.

No, I'm sure she was sincere.

Her eyes were totally sincere that day...

I have to be certain. I can't sit around like this...

Lady Cho!

Yes, Your Highness.

I want to speak to Consort Choi.

Your Highness, it is Lady Bong!

Congratulations, Your Highness!

What is it, Lady Bong? Did something happen?

Your Highness!

Your Highness, did you hear the news? Are you going to the Grand Palace?

What are you talking about? What news?

His Majesty has decided to appoint Consort Choi as Royal Noble Consort.

She's going to be the same rank as you.

- What? - Are you sure?

Yes, Your Highness.

Everyone is saying that Consort Choi is going to be Queen.

Your Highness...!

When? When was this decree given?

Three days ago. He gave the order three days ago.

Three days ago...?

Royal Noble Consort? Why would His Majesty do this?

I wish to go to the Grand Palace. Get ready!

Yes, Your Highness.

Can you wait a moment?

Your Highness...

I have come to give you an answer.

Why are you so distracted? Open your books.

Yes, Master.

- What's this? - What's wrong, Your Highness?

There's a book here that doesn't belong to me.

What?

What book is that? Show it to me.

This is...!

Where did you get this, Your Highness?

Master?

Why do you have this book, Your Highness?

I....

Are you really going to do this, Your Highness?

Yes.

I'm going to grasp this final chance...

...for you and I,

...and for Prince Yeon Ing and the Crown Prince.

Your Highness...
