Episode 49

Your Highness.

Did Her Majesty go to see Consort Hui last night?

Yes, she spoke to her.

- Let Her Majesty know I am here. - Yes, Your Highness.

Your Majesty, Consort Choi is here to see you.

Your Majesty, Consort Choi is here to see you.

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty, it is Consort Choi. I am coming in.

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

- She's unconscious! - Call the physician! Hurry!

Your Majesty! Please open your eyes!

Your Majesty!

Summon the Royal Physician! Hurry!

We should continue to collect the cloth duty,

...as it's different from the personal duty tax.

Yes, Your Majesty.

What if we collect anywhere from 5 seung to 35 seung...

...depending on the region?

Your Majesty!

What is it?

Your Majesty, something terrible has happened!

The Queen has...

She has...

What is it? Has something happened to the Queen?

Your Majesty!

Chief Eunuch!

Your Majesty...

- The Queen? - Yes, Your Highness.

She has heart spasms, and her conditions has worsened of late.

Go and find out more in detail about how serious is her condition.

- Hurry! - Yes, Your Highness.

The Queen was unwell this whole time?

My Queen...

How...? How could this happen?

My Queen...

Master, didn't you say we were going to start lessons today?

So why are we going up the mountain?

We're going to start our lessons on the mountain.

On the mountain? What is our lesson going to be?

- We're going to pick acorns. - Acorns?

Yes, acorns.

187, 188, 189, 190, 191, 192, 193, 194, 195...

You seem to be enjoying yourself.

You wanted me to get 300. Now I have only a hundred to go.

But Master, what are we going to do with these acorns?

What else? We're going to fill our bellies with them.

Fill our bellies? You mean we're going to eat them?

Yes, Your Highness.

So, acorns can be eaten too. Are they tasty?

Yes, Your Highness!

Master, you must be joking. How can you eat something this bitter?

How can I joke with you, Your Highness? I'll be executed.

You can really eat them. Look down there!

How can they eat this like they're enjoying it when it's so bitter?

Because they're hungry.

The poor don't know the difference between sweet and bitter...

...when they are hungry, Your Highness.

- Give that to me! - It's mine!

Don't fight! Friends shouldn't fight!

Don't fight! Friends shouldn't fight!

- Who are you? - Who are you to interfere?

You? I'm a Royal Prince...!

Here, take this.

- I said take it! - Are you really giving that to us?

- All of it? - But you have to share, all right?

- Let's go! - There's so much of it!

So lowborn children eat these.

So bitter!

Don't forget that bitter taste in your mouth, Your Highness.

It is also the taste of the poor's bitter tears.

It's so bitter!

Did you just say three days?

Yes, Your Majesty.

If she regains consciousness, she may survive.

Then save her.

Do whatever it takes, but save her, do you understand?

I will stake my life on it, Your Majesty!

Mother!

- Prince Yeon Ing... - Your Majesty...

Mother, has the Queen passed away?

No! No, that is not so, Geum.

She has just fallen into a deep sleep for a while.

She hasn't passed away.

So when she's done sleeping, she's going to wake up, right?

I promised Her Majesty that I would tell her what I learned today.

I promised her I would do so every day.

Mother...

Yes, I'm sure she'll wake up soon.

I'm certain Her Majesty will keep her promise.

She'll wake up for you.

Mother...

Your Majesty...

- Your Highness! - Brother.

Brother, Heaven is on our side.

There is a way out for us.

This is an opportunity sent to us by Heaven.

We have to find that nurse quickly.

But what if the Queen regains consciousness...?

No. That won't happen, Brother.

Her condition is said to be at its worst.

I'm sure this is the end for her. I'm sure she won't open her eyes again.

The Queen is at the end of her lifeline.

You mean she can die even if we don't do anything?

Yes, she can, but...

But she won't close her eyes so easily.

- What? - I can see the Queen putting up a fight.

And if she succeeds in regaining consciousness,

Nothing you do will have any effect.

Everything that shaman said is coming true.

It's all coming true.

But how do I tell this to Her Highness?

Lady Cho!

- Yes, Your Highness. - Get ready!

I want to go somewhere.

What? Her Majesty went to see Consort Hui last night?

Yes, that is what Lady Yu told me.

It's strange that she went at that hour,

And her expression was said to be extremely troubled.

No, Consort Hui. Please go back.

You may not see her today.

Please go back.

What is it?

Your Highness...

I heard the Queen is unwell, and came to pay her a visit.

Stand aside, Lady Ahn.

- But Your Highness... - Now!

I'm glad that you know how to respect your elders, Consort Choi.

Lady Ahn...

- I have to ask you something. - Yes, Your Highness.

The Crown Prince is going to be safe, Your Majesty.

And you know something else?

And when that happens,

This Queen's Palace is once again going to be mine.

So you might as well end it, Your Majesty.

End it so that I don't have to do anything.

You probably know why I want to speak to you.

- Your Highness... - Tell me...

What did she say to Consort Hui last night?

What happened last night?

Her Majesty said that the Crown Prince is secretly suffering from an illness.

She said he may not be able to ascend to the throne because of this condition.

Was last night related to that?

- Your Highness, I... - Please, Lady Ahn, I beg you.

I need to know what happened. You know that.

- What are you doing there? - Your Highness!

- I was looking for the Acorus grass. - Acorus grass?

Yes, it looks like this.

The kids I used to play with say that...

A wreath made of this grass can chase away diseases.

So you're going to make one for Her Majesty?

Yes, Your Highness.

She is ill and this is the only thing I can do for her.

- You're better than me. - Your Highness?

I visited her day and night, and yet I never knew Mother was so sick.

Your Highness...

- Can you include me too? - Your Highness?

Your Acorus wreath... I want to help you make it.

- You do? - Yes, is that all right?

Of course! With your help, we'll make one in no time!

This is the place, Your Highness.

- Is this it? - No, that's not it.

- It's not? - It's all right. It's your first time.

There it is.

This is it here.

What did you just say, Lady Ahn?

The Crown Prince may not be able to sire children?

- Lady Ahn! - I've told you everything I know.

This is what Consort Hui has been hiding.

Her Majesty found out the truth.

It is such a travesty that Her Majesty didn't even want you to know about it.

She was afraid you'd be in danger if you knew.

Your Majesty...

Last night, Her Majesty went to see Consort Hui...

...to give the Crown Prince some time.

She wanted to give Consort Hui a chance to reveal everything herself.

But... But this happened...

Hee-Jae, what are you going to do?

You heard what the shaman said. It has to be done before tonight.

But... It is too dangerous.

If we are found out...

If the Queen wakes up, it's over for us anyway.

What do we have to lose?

Are you sure? Are you sure about this?

If we do this, will it work?

There is nothing absolute in this world.

There is no way of knowing whose side Heaven will be on.

What? Then...?

But this will undoubtedly be a source of strength...

...for you and Consort Hui.

What will you do, My Lord. Will you grasp this last chance?

After we talked,

I found out that Consort Hui and one of the physicians were up to something.

But I never expected this...

So that is why Her Majesty said those things to me.

She said Prince Yeon Ing may take over the Crown Prince's position.

Your Highness, could that be why Her Majesty's condition...

...has worsened so drastically?

They are fully capable of doing anything it takes when they feel threatened.

But even so, how could they...?

Your Majesty, you should retire for the night.

I'm worried that you'll get sick.

You must know how bitter the Queen must feel towards me.

Your Majesty...

Yes, I'm sure she must have been.

That must be why her heart has become sick.

Your Majesty, that is not so. Why do you say such things?

I remember the first day the Queen entered the Palace.

I'm sure you remember that day too.

I only thought of the Queen as my betrothed bride,

...as someone who was going to be with me forever.

Because this was the Palace and it was politics.

But I never gave her my heart.

Your Majesty...

Your Majesty, the Queen has never resented you.

She only felt guilt that she was unable to bear you any children.

She always considered herself as a sinner to you and the royal family.

Yes, I'm sure she did.

But in our entire lives together, even though I knew she felt this way,

I never consoled her.

Not once.

Your Majesty...

We're here to see Consort Hui.

Who is that woman with you?

Why do you ask?

- Because it's so late and... - What? How dare you!

I want to see Her Highness. Who are you to stop me?

- Please go on. - Let's go.

You want to increase security at the Queen's Palace?

Yes, that's right.

It is Consort Choi's request, My Lord.

Can you dispatch as many troops as you can...

...to the Queen and Consort Hui's palaces?

All right.

From this moment,

We will heighten security at the Queen's Palace, do you hear?

Yes, sir!

Don't just stand there. Come with me!

Yes, sir!

Run quickly!

Run!

- Mother! - Yes.

- What do we have to do now? - We have get close to the Queen's Palace.

Let's go.

Consort Hui's mother is here at this hour?

Yes, My Lord.

But they didn't head for Consort Hui's palace?

Yes, they are here, but they didn't go there directly.

- Your Highness... - Any news from the Queen's Palace?

Yes, it's already been two days.

I fear she will never open her eyes again.

Let's go to the Queen.

You must make sure that I am not interrupted.

All right.

What's wrong, Your Highness?

Nothing. I thought I saw a light from over there.

What?

- There's no light, Your Highness. - I'm sure I saw something.

You must be exhausted from keeping vigil at the Queen's side.

Perhaps you should return to your chambers...

Let's go.

Your Majesty...

Your Majesty...

Please stop all organs from working.

From the north, south, east and west, stop all respiration.

Gods of the heavens, heed our prayers.

Yes, and I will help you.

I will protect you and Prince Yeon Ing.

Your Majesty... Is that the reason you did it?

Did you bury all of this in your heart because of Prince Yeon Ing and me?

Did you suffer all by yourself?

Can you hear me, Your Majesty? I will not let you go.

I am going to stay at your side.

So please, Your Majesty... Please gather your strength.

How can they attempt to kill my precious son?

How could this happen? Woe is me, woe is me!

You're making me shiver too.

Ho-Yang, get up from under those covers!

Nothing is going to happen to you.

- Are you sure, Father? - Yes, I just went out to check.

Good... good...

- What... what is it? - The door is open.

The door?

They're here! They've come back for me!

The wind must have blown it open.

Come to your senses. Nothing will happen to you.

Father, you have to help me. They said they were going to kill me.

- Ho-Yang! - I'm so scared!

Ho-Yang!

My Lord, how is our Ho-Yang?

He's gone crazy.

He wasn't sane to begin with, but now he's completely nuts.

What are we going to do if he really loses his mind?

How dare those rascals harm my only son!

I won't let them get away with it!

My Lord!

That's why you asked Inspector Cha Chun Soo...

...to increase security at the Queen's Palace?

Yes, that's right.

How could the Crown Prince have such a condition?

This is unthinkable.

That's why Consort Hui tried so hard to hide it.

Your Highness, under these circumstances,

They will not let go of this opportunity.

He's right. The Queen's deteriorating condition may also be because...

It's too early to make that judgment.

We must act cautiously.

Right now, we must focus on the Queen's recovery.

We also have to protect the evidence that the Queen found.

I'm certain they will do anything to retrieve it.

Where is the nurse, Your Highness?

The Queen's attendant, Jong-Geum, knows her whereabouts.

She's the only one the Queen shared this information with.

We should protect Jong-Geum.

I agree. I've sent Lady Bong for her. They should be there shortly.

What is it?

Your Highness, I can't find anymore Acorus grass.

- Really? - Yes, Your Highness.

This is all I can find. Please forgive me.

There is nothing to forgive.

We can search more at night, so don't be disappointed.

- What? At night? - Your Highness!

We've been looking everywhere for you!

Sorry, but I didn't run away.

Have you been looking for Acorus grass again?

I wanted to make a wreath for the Queen.

But the Palace didn't have any more Acorus grass.

You've skipped all your meals today. You're going to get sick.

She's right, Your Highness. Please go back to the Palace.

But how can I sit down and eat when Her Majesty is unconscious?

Your Highness!

I think there might be more Acorus grass on that side.

Can I go there and check?

Your Highness!

Hey, look at it! There's so much Acorus grass here.

Now we can make a wreath.

What's this?

*Maiden name of Queen Inhyeon

Lady Min* of the Yeohung Clan?

Your Highness! What are you doing?

Young-Dal, what is this?

This is...

What's wrong, Young-Dal?

- Your Highness... - What? Black magic?

This is it, Your Highness.

This is what the Prince found near the Queen's Palace.

Lady Min of the Yeohung Clan?

This is...!

Someone's performed black magic against the Queen.

Summon Lady Jung and Lady Nam. Hurry!

Yes, Your Highness.

What's wrong, Mother? Is that doll something bad?

- Prince Yeon Ing... - Mother!

How...? How could this...?

Someone has performed this atrocity within the Palace...

...in order to harm the Queen.

We must find out who the culprit is, do you understand?

Yes, Madam Chief.

Lady Yu, please take Shibi and Eun-Geum...

...and find out if there were any secret visitors to the Palace recently.

They will not know that we found these items,

So you must take care not to divulge anything.

I understand. Come with me.

Yes, My Lady.

- It has to be Consort Hui. - My Lady...

Lady Yu and the girls are looking into recent visitors into the Palace.

From the look of the burn marks and the softness of the soil,

I don't think it was burned more than two days ago.

Look at the visitors who entered last night and two nights ago.

- Yes, Your Highness. - Your Highness!

- Your Highness, I have terrible news! - What is it?

Jong-Geum has disappeared.

What?

Come out!

Put her on the cart.

Make one more sound and I'll pierce your heart!

Do you understand?

- Your Highness! - What happened, Lady Ahn?

Jong-Geum has disappeared?

This girl said that an hour ago,

A guard came to take Jong-Geum to the Royal Pharmacy.

But she isn't there either.

I'm sure Consort Hui is behind this.

They couldn't have left the Palace yet. Make sure all the gates are locked!

Yes, My Lord! Let's go!

Off we go!

The Royal Pharmacy received the wrong herbs?

Yes, it should have been Hwanggui, not Dangui.

We need the herbs urgently for the Queen's tonic.

- All right then. You may go. - Let's go!

- Your Highness! - Chun Soo, what did you find out?

- We think they've left the Palace. - What?

I'm sure they're behind this.

They're going to use the attendant to find out where the nurse is.

Minister, you really don't know where the nurse is either?

I really don't know, Your Highness.

Her Majesty wanted to keep this secret so badly that...

She didn't even tell me about the nurse.

Your Highness...

Your Majesty... What should we do now?

Your Majesty...

Your Majesty...

My brother has the Queen's attendant in his possession.

- Why are you doing this? - Where is the nurse?

Speak!

Please don't do this. I don't know anything!

Will you see your own body torn to pieces...

...before you open your mouth?

I see that you still have a young sister and a father who's unwell.

If you insist on keeping your mouth closed,

I'm make sure they're torn to pieces.

Are you still going to persist?

You must find the Queen's attendant, Jong-Geum, do you understand?

Yes, sir!

Yes, sir, have faith in me. Follow me!

Yes, sir!

Let's go to the Queen's Palace.

Let's search Jong-Geum's room for a clue.

Yes, Your Highness.

There's nothing here.

Nothing that reveals the nurse's location.

I can't find anything either.

Your Majesty...

- It's time for Her Majesty's tonic. - Yes, Madam.

My Lord!

It's Donghak Village. The nurse is in a house near Mt. Tarak.

- Go now! - Yes, sir!

Your Majesty...

I have lost the very thing you risked your life to protect.

I wasn't able to protect it.

What must I do now?

What now?

Consort Choi...

- Your Majesty! - Consort Choi...

Your Majesty!

Have you woken up! Do you recognize me?

Is anyone there?

Her Majesty has regained consciousness.

Her Majesty has woken up.

- Your Majesty! - Royal Physician!

Your Majesty!

- Have you regained consciousness? - Check Her Majesty's health.

- Hurry! - Your Majesty!

Your Majesty...!

What? The Queen is awake? Is that really true?

Yes, Your Majesty. They said she is awake.

- Where is she? - In a house at Donghak Village.

The Queen said the nurse was there.

- All right. Hurry! - Yes, My Lord!

Who are you?

Who are you?

Are you the nurse that the Queen hid away?

Then you must be from Consort Hui...

Consort Hui? Take her away!

Please have mercy on me. Please!

Sir, please have mercy. Please!

Please have mercy!

Here it is! She's...

What's going on? The Queen's guards have been slain.

The nurse...! Find her! Find her quickly!

She's not here, My Lord! She's gone.

What? That's impossible. That can't be.

My Lord, the guards are coming. The Royal Guard is coming.

Find the nurse first! Hurry!

My Lord, you have to run! Now!

Your Majesty, I'm sure you'll be able to recover now.

Now that you've regained consciousness,

I'm certain you'll recover.

Consort Choi...

Your Majesty...

Your Majesty...

My Lord! What happened here?

- We've come too late. - Check for survivors. Hurry!

Yes, sir!

Over there! Leave nothing unsearched!

My Lord, the nurse is gone.

- She's not here either. - Search again. Hurry!

Yes, sir!

- Sir, that knife is... - Sir...

It looks like they left us another piece of evidence instead.

What did you say, Brother? You lost the nurse?

The Queen... She regained consciousness.

Could she have...?

No, Your Highness. I'm sure it wasn't her.

The Royal Guard sent by Consort Choi was behind us.

Then who was it? Who has the nurse?

Is that the nurse?

Yes, sir. I've told them to put her in the warehouse.

Good. Make sure no one knows she's here.

Yes, sir.

So the Crown Prince may not be able to sire children?

And they tried to hide that astounding fact from me?

I've been loyal to Consort Hui and the Crown Prince all this while.

My Lord, what are you going to do now?

I heard the Queen has regained consciousness. How is she?

Will she be all right now?

- Your Majesty... - What is it?

Is something wrong?

Your Majesty!

She seems to be having some discomfort.

Summon the Royal Physician, Lady Ahn!

Yes, Your Highness.

- Your Majesty. - Consort Choi...

Yes, Your Majesty.

Your hand... Will you hold my hand?

Your Majesty...

Promise me something.

Promise me that you and Prince Yeon Ing will survive.

Promise me that you'll do this.

Your Majesty...

Only then...

I must hear you swear it.

Yes, Your Majesty, I promise.

No matter what happens, we won't give up.

We'll keep that promise we made to you.

Thank you...

Thank you, Consort Choi...

Your Majesty...

Don't forget, Consort Choi that...

I am happy that I met you...

I am glad that I had a friend like you.

Your Majesty...

Your Majesty, why are you saying such things?

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty...

I must summon the Royal Physician.

- My Queen! - Your Majesty...

My Queen!

My Queen!

Where is the Royal Physician?

- Your Highness. - Fetch him immediately!

Yes, Your Highness.

Please forgive me, Your Majesty...

My Queen...

Please forgive me for leaving you first...

Don't... don't say that, My Queen.

You're not going anywhere.

I won't let you go. I won't let you go anywhere!

- Your Majesty... - Please...

Please give me a chance, My Queen.

I've done nothing for you.

So I can't let you leave like this.

So please...

No, Your Majesty...

You've always given me more than I could handle.

I have done nothing for this nation as Queen.

But you've always protected me warmly.

Do you know how thankful I was...

...because you did so?

My Queen...

I'm so sorry, My Queen. I'm so sorry.

Royal Physician, what did you just say?

There is no hope for Her Majesty?

- Your Highness... - Royal Physician!

One more thing, Your Majesty...

I have one last request.

Request?

My Queen...

Prince Yeon Ing...

Please protect him.

Your Majesty, you must make Consort Choi...

- My Queen..! - Consort Choi...

My Queen!

My Queen..!

My Queen, you must gather your strength!

No, that's not possible.

That's impossible!

That won't happen!

Your Highness...

My Queen! My Queen...!

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty...!
