Episode 47

Mother!

This is the Palace, Mother! We're finally where Father lives!

Yes, Geum.

This is where your father lives.

Let's go.

Your Majesty, please reconsider your decree!

Your Majesty, Consort Choi is a criminal!

It is not right that she is back within the Palace, Your Majesty!

Please reconsider your decree!

Your Majesty, the ministers have gathered...

...in front of the Grand Assembly in protest.

I know that.

That's why I would rather go out than sit here and listen to their nonsense!

Chief Secretary, you will go and give them this message.

Consort Choi has already paid for her crime...

...by spending six years outside the Palace.

So anyone who insists on calling her a criminal from this moment onwards...

...will have to pay for defaming her and the crown with their lives!

Furthermore, I have bestowed the name of Prince Yeon Ing to Geum,

And will promote his mother...

...from the 4th Jong Order to Sook'ui of the 2nd Jong Order.

You will inform the Ministry of Rites...

...to make all the preparations necessary, do you hear me?

Yes, Your Majesty.

Let's go!

Your Highness...!

That child... He's Consort Choi's son?

We shouldn't have let her live six years ago...!

We shouldn't have let her return to the Palace alive!

Your Highness...!

What? Consort Choi is here?

Yes, she is on her way here with the Prince.

Your Majesty!

Consort Choi...!

Consort Choi...!

Your Majesty.

Have you been well?

Your Majesty...

- So this is the Prince. - Yes, Your Majesty.

- You must greet Her Majesty. - Yes, Mother.

Your Majesty, I humbly greet you.

Due to my long absence,

I was not able to perform my filial duties to you.

I pray that your life is peaceful and lacking in worries.

Have you been well in this hot summer, Your Majesty?

What a clever boy you are.

Welcome.

What an upright and bright child you have grown up to be.

Is this really the place we're going to live in, Ae-Jong?

- It's so big and spacious! - Yes, Your Highness. Do you like it?

Then all those people there will be our attendants?

Of course they are!

If you give the order, they will run to you!

Do you want to give it a try?

Consort Choi...

No, I must now call you Sook'ui Consort Choi.

A decree will soon declare your Sook'ui promotion.

- I've been promoted? - Yes.

It was His Majesty's decision.

And your son, who will soon receive his title,

...seems to be an exceptional young boy.

You have raised him well.

I do not know how to express my gratitude.

- Your Majesty... - But this is just the beginning.

You must be aware of what all of this means to Consort Hui.

Yes, Your Majesty.

I am certain that they were the ones responsible for the fire.

I am also aware of what the Prince will have to go through within the Palace.

I know that as time passes, he will come under threat.

But I'm not going to sit and watch.

I'm going to protect that child no matter what it takes.

Yes, of course you should.

I too will help you.

No matter what happens, I will help you and Prince Yeon Ing.

Your Majesty...!

Your Majesty.

So where is Consort Chun and the Prince?

They have just given their greetings to the Queen...

...and are headed to their residence.

Indeed?

Shall I send word for them to come to the Grand Palace?

No, I'll go to them.

- Your Majesty? - I don't want to wait!

This is the first time I'll see my son as his father.

I'm going to go see my son right this minute.

- Then you've seen Father before? - Of course, Your Highness.

Really? What kind of person is he?

Is he a fearsome person?

Are you kidding me, Your Highness? Even tigers won't growl in front of him!

Really? He's that frightening?

Of course!

Your Highness, the Grand Palace has sent word.

His Majesty is on his way to your residence.

His Majesty?

Yes, he wants to see you and the Prince!

No, that is not so!

I am certain that His Majesty has never forgotten...

...either Her Highness or you for a single moment.

I wonder if that Justice Officer was right.

What if Father sees me and is disappointed?

Boy!

- When did you arrive? - You! You're the Justice Officer!

Yes, Your Highness, it is I!

What are you doing here? Are you here to see me?

Yes, Your Highness!

I heard you were in the Palace and ran here!

Thanks. I was just thinking about you.

Your Highness?

I'm going to see Father soon, and I'm worried.

Worried? About what, Your Highness?

The attendant I asked said that my father was as ferocious as a tiger.

I'm worried that I might make a mistake and get scolded by him.

I see... A scolding...?

- Come to think of it, that may happen. - What?

As you mentioned, His Majesty is ferocious!

But you were talking disrespectfully in front of him!

And that's not all. He's the King, and yet you forced him to wrestle!

You even made him swim in the stream!

You're in a big trouble!

What do you mean by that?

How would Father know about the wrestling and the stream?

- That's because... - Geum!

Mother!

- Your Majesty! - So you're here, Dong Yi.

What is going on, Your Majesty?

Why are you dressed like that with the Prince?

Mother, what do you mean?

Why are you calling this fellow His Majesty?

What?

This fellow is the Justice Officer of the Prefecture...

Geum, what are you talking about?

Your Majesty, why is he...?

I don't know either. He thinks I'm the Justice Officer.

- Just like you a long time ago. - What?

Then that Justice officer he met was...?

That's right, it was me.

Then.... then you're not the Justice Officer?

Then... then...?

Yes, Your Highness.

I'm the King of this nation, and your father, Your Highness.

- I... I... - Geum!

- Go and get him! - Yes, Your Highness! Your Highness!

Your Majesty, what happened?

Did you pretend to be a Justice Officer when you met him?

I... I... I wanted to see him.

- Your Majesty! - I didn't mean to...

But I was dressed like this for my inspections and...

He seems to be in shock. What do we do?

Your Highness!

- He's not that way? - No!

What do we do? Go that way!

Where could he have gone to?

Your Highness!

What should I do?

I'm sure to be punished for being so disrespectful to Father!

An hour has passed! The Prince has yet to be found?

Please forgive us, Your Majesty.

I took it too far. I never thought it would affect him so much!

He may have gotten lost in the Palace grounds.

I'll go and look for him.

Dong Yi! I'll go with you!

Geum!

- Where are you? - Geum!

Your Majesty.

I think I hear a puppy barking over here.

Let's see... Is it from here or there?

- I think it's here, Your Majesty. - Do you?

If Geum was listening, he should know that I'm not angry at all!

- You're not angry? - Of course not!

I pretended to be the Justice Officer because I wanted to see him so much!

I had so much fun with him!

You're not going to punish him for his disrespect?

Punish him? When you first met me, you stepped on my back!

Your Majesty!

You'll never know how happy and glad I was when I first met Geum.

It was such a wonderful and magical time,

Just like when I first met you.

You're really not angry with me, Your Majesty?

Geum!

- Geum. - You rascal.

We were looking for you, and here you were!

I have offended you by not recognizing you, Your Majesty!

But you're not disappointed in me?

Disappointed? How could I be disappointed with you?

Geum, do you remember what I said at the stream?

That there was not one day that passed without me thinking of you.

Have you forgotten already?

So Geum, call me Father.

Do you know how I've waited to hear that from you?

Father...

Yes.... One more time. Can you say that one more time?

- Father...! - That's right! Geum!

Yes! Yes, Geum. I'm your father!

- Where is His Majesty? - He is still with the Prince.

He just fell asleep.

From now on, I'll put him to sleep every night.

I'm going to do all the things I could only dream about doing with him.

Your Majesty...

Little rascal...

His eyes, mouth and even his ears... Everything looks exactly like me!

Don't you agree?

I don't know. I always thought he looked like me.

That can't be! He looks like me!

Then let's just say he does.

But... I don't want to just say it!

Yes, Your Majesty. He looks exactly like you.

That's why I could look at him and go on living.

Because when I looked at him, I could see you.

Dong Yi...

I will never let go of your hand nor this child's.

I have lost and found what I cherish the most.

I will never lose you or this child again.

Your Majesty...

Your Highness...!

The Police Bureau was investigating the house?

Yes, His Majesty has ordered them to find out the cause of the fire.

That's why I need more money.

I need to take my men and leave the capital.

What? You couldn't even get rid of that wench!

- How can you demand more money? - Would you rather we get caught?

Make preparations to return to the Palace.

Yes, My Lord!

- I'll look into ship passage for you. Go. - Yes, Madam.

Who was that man?

Nobody.

- Are you going to the Palace? - Yes, Mother.

How is Her Highness?

The thorn in her side has returned with her child.

How do you think she is? Her heart must be black by now.

Welcome, Consort Hui.

Your Majesty, you've invited the Ladies of the Court for a banquet?

- What is the occasion? - What other occasion could there be?

Consort Choi has returned, and it is a great event for the Palace.

The banquet is a celebration of her return.

It's been a long time, Your Highness.

You've managed to return. What an amazing woman you are.

Look at how you hold your head up high when you're a criminal.

I see you're wearing the accessory, Your Highness.

The butterfly.

Six years ago,

I know that it was you who led His Majesty...

...to where I was with my friend, the Chief of the Sword Fraternity.

And long before that,

I also know that the wrongful deaths of my father and brother happened ...

...because you were involved.

- Consort Choi! - I am not the criminal. You are!

So remember this, Your Highness.

I have not forgotten anything.

And I will never lose anything again at your hands.

You mean I can freely read all of these books?

Yes, Your Highness!

Your Highness!

Your Highness!

- You must be Prince Yeon Ing! - Yes, Your Highness!

- Wait, aren't you that lowborn child? - Yes, that's me!

I was your brother!

I see. I didn't know who you were and made trouble for you!

Made trouble? Not at all, Your Highness!

I'm at fault for coming into the Palace.

What are you doing at the Royal Library?

I heard you were on your way to the Royal Academy.

Yes, they said I could read any of the books here.

Yes, that's right.

But you seemed to have chosen the wrong book.

What?

Here you go.

"Elementary Learning" again?

I wanted to read Mencius. Am I not allowed to take his writings?

What? There's no reason why you can't.

But what are you going to do with that book?

It's nothing, Your Highness! I...

Did you say Woon Hak Master Kim Gu-Sun?

Yes, Your Majesty.

With your permission,

I would like him to be Geum's teacher while he studies at the Royal Academy.

I heard that Royal Princes are able to have private tutors.

Yes, if he is willing, there is no one better.

But it won't be easy.

I've asked him to join my government several times.

- But he has never agreed. - I know, Your Majesty.

So with your permission, I would like to try to change his mind.

You mean you'll do it personally, Dong Yi?

Yes, Your Majesty.

Your Majesty, you must be determined to mimic Liu Bei.

It will be futile even if you come here three hundred times.

Is it because you trust not in power or government?

You don't take any disciples who are involved in politics.

Then what about as a human being?

If you don't trust government or politics,

Won't you trust in human beings?

Trust in human beings?

You have yet to become used to Palace life, Your Highness.

Forgive me, Your Highness, but I am not a naive old man.

- All right then, I will leave for today. - Don't come here again, Your Highness.

Yes. I won't come here again.

Master!

- Your Highness! - Are you going to the fields, Master?

You didn't return to the Palace, Your Highness?

Where is your mother?

Mother and her attendants have all left, Master.

Wh... what? What do you mean they left?

- They left you here by yourself? - That's right!

They left you here alone when you're only seven years old?

Only? Seven years makes for a young man, Master!

Your Highness!

Your Highness!

You're really going to leave the Prince there?

That's right.

But Your Highness...

I am the Prince's mother, not the Prince.

He must gain his own teacher by himself.

Your Highness...!

- Seeds... where are the seeds? - Here they are, Master!

Here's the water.

Where did you learn this?

From Mother. She said this was important too.

Her Highness is certainly doing her best.

But when you return, tell her it's useless.

Master, do you dislike me?

Yes, Your Highness. I find you annoying and bothersome.

You heard me? So go back to the Palace, Your Highness!

So were you hurt?

Because Master Woon Hak told you he disliked you?

No, it was a little upsetting,

But you said I shouldn't dislike someone even if they disliked me.

You remembered that?

Yes, you said that books try to decipher life's meaning,

...but life is simple.

You told me to like people first.

Yes, even the most evil of men hide a warm heart within.

- That's what you must like. - Yes, Master seems to be a good man.

He said he didn't like me,

But he gave me a lot of rice and gave me the choicest food.

- He did? - Yes, Mother.

Yes, Geum. Master Woon Hak is a great man.

Remember that if you stay with him and mimic what he does,

You will also become great.

- Yes, Mother. - And Geum...

I have something to tell you before your first day at the Royal Academy.

Yes, Mother, what is it?

You have to promise me something. Can you do this?

What? A promise?

Your Majesty!

- Jong-Geum has brought the nurse. - Bring her in.

What? You want me to pretend that...

I don't know "Elementary Learning" at the Royal Academy?

That's right.

So do you think you can keep this promise?

But why? I can recite the whole thing with my eyes closed.

That's...

- That's because you may be in danger. - What? In danger?

Why?

Mother...!

So all of these herbs were obtained from Consort Hui's family...

...and used to make the Crown Prince's tonics?

Yes, Your Majesty.

Now tell me what these herbs are used for.

Why is Consort Hui bringing these in separately to give to the Crown Prince?

Your Majesty, that is...

Speak! Her Majesty has asked you a question!

Your Majesty, if I tell you this, I will be a dead woman!

I am, Your Majesty!

Your life and safety will be provided by me.

So speak. What is wrong with the Crown Prince?

What? In danger? Why?

Mother...!

The Crown Prince... may not be able to sire children?

Your Majesty, if that is true, this is a terrible news!

This is exactly what Consort Hui was afraid of.

She knew the Crown Prince's position would become insecure if others found out.

That's why she did all of this to hide the truth.

Your Majesty, should this be revealed?

Perhaps you can tell Consort Choi and discuss....

No. I won't get her involved as we have yet to confirm this.

Consort Choi may be in danger.

So until we have confirmed everything, you must keep your mouth shut.

Do you hear me?

Yes, Your Majesty.

~ Recites Elementary Learning ~

One must incorporate humility and modesty,

Be open to learning, but teach no one.

One's knowledge...!

...and expertise shall be contained within and not shown outwardly.

Really? Prince Yeon Ing is that dull-witted?

Yes, I had him watched just to be sure, and it was confirmed.

He has barely learned his characters, let alone "Elementary Learning".

He grew up as a ragamuffin outside the Palace, so it's to be expected.

I don't think you have to worry about the Prince any further, Your Highness.

No, that's not enough.

The fact that he can never replace the Crown Prince...

...must be made known to His Majesty and everyone in the Palace.

Even if the Crown Prince's condition is made known,

No one must be able to challenge his position.

But how?

I will meet with the Crown Prince's Royal Tutor...

...as well as Prince Yeon Ing's teacher at the Academy.

What? The Crown Prince is having a Book Completion Celebration?

Yes, he has completed his studies on "Great Learning",

And the Royal Lectures Office will be throwing a celebration in 3 days.

Finished "Great Learning"? His Highness must truly be gifted!

I know! He's only thirteen years of age!

That's why His Majesty is so proud of him!

But in three days, the Royal Academy will also be conducting their mid-term exams.

Yes, you're right.

The mid-term exams and the Book Completion Celebration on the same day?

We're dead! We're dead, My Lady!

What a strange coincidence!

Both are such major events. How can they be on the same day?

She's right, Madam Chief.

So you mean...

The Crown Prince's Book Completion and the Royal Academy's mid-term exams...

...will be conducted together?

Yes, the Royal Tutor suggested that...

It will be a good opportunity to show the Crown Prince's knowledge...

...as a good example to the students of the Royal Academy.

Yes, it would be good to challenge the royal children with the Crown Prince's example.

Yes, Your Majesty.

Wait...

Prince Yeon Ing must also be having mid-term exams too.

- Am I right? - Yes, Your Majesty.

That rascal... I wonder how he'll do.

If he's like either of us, he should be intelligent.

Why must I pretend not to know anything even at exam time?

Don't just sit there. Read a book or something!

- I won't understand it even if I read it. - Even so!

His Majesty will be present at the mid-term exams.

Do you want to be humiliated before him?

What? Father will be present at the exam too?

That's right. You didn't know?

His Majesty the King!

The Crown Prince's Book Completion and the mid-term exams...

...are being conducted at the same place.

What a momentous occasion.

The Crown Prince shall be an example to the others.

All of you shall be challenged and advance in your studies.

Yes, Your Majesty!

Then let us begin.

We shall first conduct the Crown Prince's Book Completion Ceremony.

~ Recites "Great Learning" ~

~ Recites "Great Learning" ~

It is better not to learn at all than to learn without pursuing it to the end.

It is better not to ask at all than to ask without finding out the answer.

It is better not to think than to think without attaining knowledge.

What a clever boy you are!

You have understood "Great Learning" completely!

Thank you, Father.

His Highness' intelligence will be certain to bring a great future to our nation, Your Majesty!

Yes, I am quite pleased!

- Now, let us begin the mid-term exams. - Yes, Your Majesty.

His Majesty went to the Royal Academy to attend the mid-term exams?

Yes, the exams are being held simultaneously...

...with the Crown Prince's Book Completion celebration!

Geum...!

Prince Yeon Ing is next.

Pick one to recite, and tell us its meaning, Your Highness.

It is Chapter Five of "Elementary Learning", Your Majesty.

Will you keep our promise?

We just learned this in yesterday's session.

You can't recite it?

I... I...

I don't know it.

It's all right, Prince Yeon Ing. Do not be too trouble.

It is not shameful to admit you don't know something.

Father...

Perhaps it is because he spent most of his life outside the Palace, Your Majesty.

Her Highness is from a lowborn background,

So it couldn't have been easy for her to teach him.

Yes, Your Majesty.

It is fortunate that His Highness has joined the Royal Academy.

If his education had continued to depend on Consort Choi,

It would have been hopeless!

You are....!

My mother taught me "Elementary Learning"!

Her teaching enabled me to understand "Elementary Learning" completely!

How dare you look down on her!

Prince Yeon Ing, what do you mean?

You understand "Elementary Learning" completely?

Then why did you just say you didn't know it?

Father, that was...

Your Highness, how can a Child of Royal Blood speak such bold lies?

That is not appropriate behavior for a Royal Prince.

I'm not lying! I'm not!

You're not?

Then can you recite the passage that you selected?

I... I won't do "Elementary Learning".

I... I don't know "Elementary Learning".

What do you mean?

Prince Yeon Ing!

May I recite "Doctrine of the Mean" or "Great Learning" instead?

What?

She told me I can't do "Elementary Learning",

But she didn't mention the other books.

So I'll recite those.

Did you say "Great Learning" and the "Doctrine of the Mean"?

That's right.

You're telling us that you read both of those books?

Your Majesty, the Prince seems to be flustered.

He doesn't know what those books are...

~ Recites Chapter 20 of the Doctrine of the Mean ~

To this attainment there are requisite the extensive study of what is good,

Accurate inquiry about it, careful reflection on it,

The clear discrimination of it, and the earnest practice of it.

Geum, that is...!

I know them, Father. I know both of those books.

What about "Great Learning"? Bring me the book!

But Your Majesty...!

Quickly!

~ Recites Commentary 6 of Great Learning ~

- Do you know what this means? - Yes, Father.

Riches adorn a house, and virtue adorns the person.

The mind is expanded, and the body is at ease.

Therefore, the superior man must make his thoughts sincere.

~ Recites Commentary 7 of Great Learning ~

How about this?

If a man be under the influence of passion,

He will be incorrect in his conduct.

He will be the same, if he is under the influence of distress.

That is my understanding, Father.

How could this be? Geum...!

What did you just say? That Yeon Ing was what...?

He recited "Great Learning", Your Highness.

He did it in front of His Majesty and all the students.

What? "Great Learning"?

Yes, His Highness had memorized "Great Learning"!

Come to your senses, boy! Do you know what kind of book that is?

I saw him do it with my own two eyes!

Stop spouting foolishness! I know he's smart, but "Great Learning"?

Even scholars preparing for their civil exams...

...have a tough time with that book, you loghead!

This is so frustrating! I'm going to die of anxiety!

Then die, you ignorant fool!

- Geum! - Mother!

Geum, why did you do this? Did you forget what I told you?

Why did you...?

But I didn't recite "Elementary Learning" because of our promise.

- Geum! - The ministers were mocking you!

And... and Father looked disappointed because he thought I didn't know anything.

I studied hard too, so I wanted to show Father that I could do it.

- Geum... - Dong Yi!

- Your Majesty... - Dong Yi, did you know about him?

Geum, this child...

...read and understood "Great Learning" and the "Doctrine of the Mean" by himself!

He must have an exceptional mind!

Geum is a prodigy!

Up you go!

Father!

You're like me! You're exactly like me!

You mean Prince Yeon Ing is a prodigy?

Yes, Your Majesty.

Consort Choi discovered this just a short time ago too.

Your Majesty!

She must have hidden the fact because it would put him at risk.

Yes, Your Majesty.

I made too big of a mistake.

With my own hands, I uncovered the fact that child is a prodigy.

And in front of His Majesty at that.

- Your Highness... - I did it myself.

How could I have done this?

- Your Highness... - Your Highness!

Your Highness, Physician Nam is urgently asking to see you!

- Send him in! - Yes, My Lord.

- Your Highness, I have terrible news. - What is it?

A nurse who had been taking care of the Crown Prince has disappeared!

- What...? - Disappeared? How?

Someone saw her secretly entering the Queen's Palace...

What? The Queen's Palace?

Yes, and right after that, she vanished!

You fool...!

How dare you tell us this? I told you keep their mouths shut!

- My Lord! Please have mercy! - You damned bastard!

Die!

I will go speak to His Majesty. Send word of my arrival.

Yes, Your Majesty.

It would have been impossible to keep it a secret forever, Your Highness.

I know that, but I didn't expect it to be found out so quickly.

I didn't think it through.

I didn't think about his young desire to protect his mother and hear his father's praise.

- Your Highness... - Your Highness, it is Lady Bong.

Inspector Shim is here.

Your Highness, I had to speak urgently to you.

I'm glad you're here, My Lord.

What is it?

Prince Yeon Ing's incident has caused great chaos in the Palace!

What?

What do you mean by chaos, Inspector Shim?

What? At the Crown Prince's Royal Lectures Office?

Yes, Father. His Majesty has ordered the Office...

...to teach Prince Yeon Ing together with the Crown Prince!

What is that possible, My Lord?

The Loyal Lectures Office is responsible for the Crown Prince's education!

How can Prince Yeon Ing be taught there?

I don't know!

Loose lips! Blabber mouth!

Why do you call me that whenever I say something?

Your Majesty, that's not possible!

How can he study at the Royal Lectures Office...?

Prince Yeon Ing has a special gift, Dong Yi.

The Royal Lectures Office is made up of distinguished scholars.

That is why I want him to be educated there.

But Your Majesty...

I stayed up all night thinking about what to do with him.

But the Queen gave me this idea.

She said that the best teachers were at the Royal Lectures Office.

She suggested that Geum be taught there.

But the Queen gave me this idea.

She said that the best teachers were at the Royal Lectures Office.

She suggested that Geum be taught there.

Your Majesty...!

- Your Highness! - The Royal Lectures Office?

They want to include Consort Choi's child in the Crown Prince's Royal Lectures Office?

Your Highness, please calm down!

No, I won't let that happen! I'll never let that happen!

Did they think I would do nothing...

...while Consort Choi's child shakes the Crown Prince's position?

Your Highness...

Your Majesty...

As you can see, I am unwell.

The Royal Physician has said that...

...my heart condition has worsened over time.

You wanted to know why I did it?

Why I made such a request to His Majesty?

Because of this.

Because I wanted to protect you while I still had breath in me.

Your Majesty...

So listen carefully to what I have to say.

I'm speaking of the possibility that...

...the current Crown Prince may not ascend to the throne.

Your Majesty?

If that happens, the only person who can take his place...

...is your son, Prince Yeon Ing.

So I ask you this.

Will you be able to raise him as King?

Your Majesty, what are you talking about?

Raise Prince Yeon Ing as King?

- But that's... that's... - Consort Choi.

Your Majesty!
