Gaeduara! Gaeduara, wake up!

Just a little bit more, Gaeduara!

- Gaeduara! - Dong Yi...

Your Majesty...!

What is going on?

How can you...?

Why are you here...?

Your Majesty...!

That man is the Chief of the Sword Fraternity!

- Arrest him! - Yes, sir!

- Your Highness! - Your Highness!

- Dong Yi..! - Gaeduara!

Dong Yi...!

Episode 43

You've arrived, My Lord.

Is it true that the Sword Fraternity Chief has been arrested?

That's not the important thing, My Lord!

Consort Chun was there too!

And His Majesty as well!

What?

What did you just say? Her Highness was there?

And His Majesty was there too?

Officer Cha...

What do we do now?

Your Highness...!

What's going on, Dong Yi?

Do you know the Chief of the Sword Fraternity?

Do you?

No, that's impossible! This must be a misunderstanding!

Say something.

Why are you here and not in the Palace?

How do you know that criminal? What were you doing here with him?

Dong Yi!

I was going to tell you everything.

I went to see you and tell you what I've kept secret all this time.

But...

It seems to be too late for that, Your Majesty.

Dong Yi...

Please forgive us, Your Majesty.

But we have to take Consort Chun with us.

There are a few things we will need to ask her.

- Escort Her Highness! - Yes, sir!

- Your Highness! - Your Highness!

Move aside! Let us through this instant!

Officer Cha!

I won't give up Her Highness to these men!

Officer...

Sheath your sword.

I advise you not to interfere with our work.

Put down your sword.

What has happened, Governor?

Consort Chun will have to answer that.

But don't worry too much.

If she's innocent, what harm will befall her?

Your Majesty...

Her Highness... has been taken to the Prefecture Office.

I need to know what happened.

Go and fetch Chief Suh... No, I mean Officer Cha... No...

It doesn't matter who it is. Just go and get someone!

- Go and get them now! - Yes, Your Majesty.

Good work, men!

They've also apprehended the ship...

...that they hired to take the criminal away from the capital!

Not only that,

His Majesty himself witnessed her trying to help the criminal escape!

That wench is finished, Your Highness.

If Consort Chun is the late Chief's daughter,

That would be more than sufficient, Your Highness.

We can use that to eliminate her now.

No, that's not enough.

His Majesty has gone for his inspections.

Your Highness, you mean...?

Use all your means to make Consort Chun leave the Palace,

Do you understand?

His Majesty has to see everything with his own eyes.

I want that moment to be etched forever in his mind.

What are you going to do now, Your Majesty?

As King of this nation, will you be able to forgive Consort Chun?

Gaeduara! Wake up, Gaeduara!

Just a little bit more, Gaeduara! Gaeduara!

Dong Yi..!

You mean to say that Her Highness knows that man?

Yes, My Lady.

I think they are childhood friends.

Is that all? Is there anything else that you know?

I don't know anything else!

I was just supposed to find Chief Suh and Officer Cha!

But Her Highness...

That's all! I don't know anything else!

My Lady, what is going to happen to Her Highness?

Will she be considered a criminal too?

I'm wrong, right? She wouldn't be, right?

No, My Lord! I'll go to the Grand Palace!

Move aside, Officer Cha! I'm the worst offender here!

My Lord!

I was the one who told Her Highness to keep this a secret.

- I won't let her be punished for it! - My Lord!

Did you already forget what Her Highness requested?

She left the Prince in your care!

I am no longer able to protect the Prince.

But you still can!

Officer Cha!

Please don't do this, My Lord!

I know how much this is making you suffer.

But you must endure it!

My Lord!

Do you recognize this royal seal, Your Highness?

There are reports that you used this to get a royal ship.

Is that true?

Of course that is your right.

You're His Majesty most favored consort.

Of course you can use a royal ship anytime you wish.

But the strange thing is...

...that you were out of the Palace at a late hour by yourself.

And requested the ship urgently.

For what purpose did you do this? Did you do it to help the Chief escape?

You are the Governor of the Prefecture Office?

Yes, Your Highness.

You saw me dressed like this at the gisaeng house...

...and didn't even look surprised.

And even now, you look as if you knew everything beforehand.

All of your conclusions are most likely correct.

But I won't speak to you.

I will speak to His Majesty first.

Your Highness, that's...

Don't worry. It's not because I want to deny my guilt.

I will give you what you want only after I speak to His Majesty first.

Tell me what's going on!

You're her brother, so you should know!

- Speak, Officer Cha! - Your Majesty...

Everything is my fault.

Please have me executed!

Her Highness is guilty only of being unable to turn her back on a childhood friend.

I am guilty of knowing who he was but not having him arrested.

You don't deny it.

Neither you or Dong Yi are denying anything!

- Your Majesty! - Why? Why did you do this?

You're an officer of the Royal Guard!

How can you neglect your duty as an officer of the government?

He may be a childhood friend, but how could Dong Yi help him?

What is this thing that Dong Yi was trying to tell me?

Is this about long ago?

The thing you came to speak to me about back then?

- The thing that she couldn't tell me...? - Your Majesty.

Your Majesty, Consort Chun is here to see you.

Your Highness...

I will tell you that myself, Your Majesty.

Your Highness!

I beg of you, Chun Soo. This is something I have to do.

Please don't make me commit any crimes against His Majesty again.

Officer Cha! What happened to Her Highness?

- Dong Yi... - Please don't forgive me, Your Majesty.

I hid this terrible secret from you.

- I... - No, stop talking. I'll speak.

- Your Majesty... - Yes, I think I know what this is about.

You said that you and your father...

...had the help of the Sword Fraternity a long time ago.

Yes, I remember Chief Suh telling me that.

He said that Sword Fraternity...

...helped you escape the abuses of the noble family your family belonged to.

You considered that a crime...

And that's why you didn't think you were worthy to be with me.

Then they came to you and threatened you!

They must have blackmailed you with what happened all those years ago!

- That's how they used you and... - No, Your Majesty.

That's not what happened. They didn't blackmail me.

I helped them voluntarily.

- What? - I... I am...

My name isn't Chun Dong Yi, Your Majesty.

My late father's name was Choi Hyo Won.

Choi Dong Yi... That is my real name, Your Majesty.

I was not a runaway slave.

I was the daughter of corpse-handler in the slave village.

I am the daughter of the Chief of the Sword Fraternity...

...who died in 1681.

My father...

...was the Chief of the Sword Fraternity.

My brother was a member of the Sword Fraternity.

That is who I am, Your Majesty.

That is the past that I couldn't tell you about.

That is why I couldn't turn my back on them.

That is why I willingly tried to help them escape.

Your Majesty, I will accept full responsibility for everything.

But none of my attendants knew any of this.

Chief Suh didn't know this,

...and neither did anyone from the Office of Investigations.

- So please don't make them... - Enough! That's enough!

Not another word! Don't say another word!

- Your Majesty... - You'll accept full responsibility?

How can you say such a thing to me?

How can you!

Chief Eunuch!

- Yes... yes, Your Majesty. - Take Consort Chun out.

She will return to her palace immediately!

Your Majesty...

Your Majesty...!

Didn't you hear me? Send her away!

Your Highness...

That is why I couldn't turn my back on them.

That is why I willingly tried to help them escape.

Your Majesty, I will accept full responsibility for everything.

- Your Highness! - Stand aside!

Your Highness!

Lady Jung and Lady Nam, return to the Office.

- Never come here again! - Your Highness, what are you saying?

Lady Bong, pack your things with the other attendants.

None of you can stay in my palace from this moment forward,

Do you hear me?

- Your Highness! - Your Highness!

We can't do that, Your Highness.

- Lady Jung! - Did you do this to protect us?

Is this why you're doing this too?

Didn't you hear me? I said go away!

- Your Highness! - Please, I beg you, Lady Jung!

Please don't let me see all of you get hurt because of me.

- Please let me protect you! - Then what are we to do, Your Highness?

If we can't protect you, then what about us?

Lady Jung!

We know everything, but we also know it's not your fault!

Your Highness, we won't take one step away from here.

If you insist on this,

We're going to confess that we knew everything and accept our punishment!

Your Highness!

We will stay with you, Your Highness.

How can you ask us to abandon you?

How can you ask us to turn our backs on you...

...after all you've done for us?

Wherever it is you're going, we'll go together with you.

Please don't send us away!

Your Highness!

Please take care of the Prince.

No matter what happens in the future,

You must remain safe.

You must remain in the Palace so that you can protect the Prince.

- Your Majesty! - Wait.

Don't say anything for just a while.

Please hear our plea, Your Majesty!

Consort Chun has committed an unpardonable crime!

She is the daughter of the Sword Fraternity's Chief!

She humiliated the monarchy and government...

...by entering the Palace and hiding her true identity!

She is also guilty of trying to help the present Sword Fraternity!

It is only right to punish her as a traitor...

...along with the rest of the Sword Fraternity!

We agree, Your Majesty! Please hear our plea!

Please hear our plea, Your Majesty!

Your Majesty, it has been confirmed that...

Consort Chun is the daughter of Choi Hyo Won.

It has also been confirmed that...

The resurrected Sword Fraternity is guilty of murdering the nobles,

...and that she tried to help them escape the authorities.

The ministers are all at the Grand Palace petitioning His Majesty.

His Majesty won't be able to stand against them for long.

There must be more pressure!

There must be no potential for escape!

Don't worry, Your Highness.

His Majesty is said to be furious.

I am certain something will happen soon.

Your Highness, Madam Yoon is here.

- Your Highness! - Welcome, Mother.

I ran here when I heard the news!

That thorn in our side is finally going to be removed!

That's right, Mother. Now we can finally sleep in peace!

Yes, this is why I must have been able to persevere...

...through our darkest times!

I finally feel like I can die in peace now!

Is Her Majesty in?

Please go inside. She's waiting for you.

Let's go in!

The investigation is not yet completed.

But Consort Chun's guilt is unquestionable, Your Majesty.

There is no escape for her.

She will have to pay the consequences, Your Majesty.

- No, we cannot allow that to happen. - Your Majesty!

Consort Chun isn't the one who has committed a crime.

Your Majesty?

- What? The Queen? - Yes, Your Highness.

Escort her in.

Your Majesty.

Get ready. There is a place I must go to.

How do you feel now?

Consort Chun is finally going to be out of your hair.

Are you satisfied now?

Pardon me, Your Majesty, but I don't know what you mean.

Indeed?

It is unfortunate what has happened to Consort Chun.

She kept a terrible secret from both of you.

How surprised both His Majesty and you must be.

Yes. I was surprised and angry.

I am sure His Majesty feels the same way.

But the thing that made me furious wasn't Consort Chun.

But because of you, Consort Hui.

That you still haven't learned your lesson.

And that you used this despicable method to get rid of Consort Chun.

Don't assume you'll get everything your way, Consort Hui.

I am no longer a puppet.

So remember this.

I will not let Consort Chun suffer at your hands the way I had to.

What?

Your Majesty...

- You will all stand back. - Yes, Your Majesty.

- Stand back! - Yes, My Lord!

So you're the Chief of the Sword Fraternity?

- What? His Majesty is here? - Yes, My Lord.

He has ordered everyone to stand back.

He's speaking in private to the prisoner!

Why would His Majesty meet him in person?

What is your name?

It... it is Gaeduara, Your Majesty.

You're a young man. And Dong Yi's childhood friend...

That means you're not even thirty years old.

This is the report I received from my ministers.

This report outlines what the Sword Fraternity did.

It contains all the crimes you are guilty of.

If this report is true,

Then you will have to pay with your lives.

But there is something that was missing from this report.

It doesn't say why you did this.

It doesn't discuss the reason why you committed this heinous crime.

Your... Your Majesty!

I am here because I want to hear that reason.

Tell me the truth. What is the reason?

Why did you murder all those nobles in cold blood?

Your Majesty...

We did it because no one would do it for us.

What...?

We wanted to annihilate all the nobles in this world,

...but no one would do it for us.

We were born as human beings,

But when you are a lowborn, you cannot live as one.

Even though we are exploited all our lives...

...and may even lose our lives wrongfully,

No one stands for us.

That is the nation we live in.

That's why we did it.

We are human beings too, so don't exploit us and kill us.

Don't kill us because we're lowborn.

That is why I have no regrets, Your Majesty.

I know that what I have done is punishable by death.

But if I have to die and be born again into this wretched life as a lowborn,

I will take up the sword again and do exactly the same thing.

But Consort Chun is not guilty of anything.

Neither was her father, the late Chief.

All he did was try to protect the lowborn who were being exploited.

He took up the sword, but he never used it for murder.

But he still lost his life anyway!

Her Highness lost her father to an unjust death!

What do you mean by that? Unjust death?

What is this unjust death you're talking about?

What do you think? Can you do this?

I know it is a difficult request.

You may feel that even more so...

...because Her Highness' future is uncertain.

- My Lady... - My Lady...!

We'll do it, My Lady.

I will testify that Governor Jang asked us to watch Consort Chun's movements.

- Lady Yoo! - We will testify as well.

Me too.

Eun-Geum and Shibi, thank you! Thank you so much!

I will go to the Prefecture Office to be questioned.

Send word that I will be there by 3 pm.

Your Highness...

Your Highness, Her Majesty the Queen is here!

Your Majesty.

I need to tell you something.

What is it?

It is about the late Councilor Oh Tae-Suk...

...and the Sword Fraternity incident on 1684.

- Your Majesty! - So listen to me and persevere!

I will protect you no matter what it takes!

Your Majesty, you must not do this!

You know what crime I am guilty of!

Yes, you are the daughter of the Sword Fraternity's Chief.

But your father and the Sword Fraternity were victims of a conspiracy.

That was neither your father nor your own fault.

I know the late Councilor was responsible for what happened.

I know that you found the evidence that proves that!

Even so, it will not erase my past.

I still helped the Chief escape...

So you mean to take responsibility for everything?

Don't you understand, Consort Chun? You may be executed for this!

Consort Chun...!

Send the guards to Consort Chun's palace and escort her here.

We must conclude this case as soon as possible.

Yes, My Lord.

- Let's go! - Yes, sir!

My Lord!

My Lord, the Chief Secretary is here with a royal decree!

- Your Highness! - Brother!

What is the verdict?

Has His Majesty given his verdict on Consort Chun?

That...

What do you mean I can't go to the Prefecture Office?

We have been given strict orders that you are not to leave your palace.

- Who gave you those orders? - I did.

Your Majesty...!

Your Majesty...

I heard about what happened to your father.

I know what he tried to do...

...and why he had to die.

Your Majesty...!

It's not your fault.

As King of this nation, it is my fault.

You tried to tell me the truth for a long time.

But it was I who stopped you.

Your Majesty...!

So it is my fault that you hid the truth.

It was also my fault that...

The lowborn had to experience such hardship and suffering.

I will take care of everything.

I will not let you get hurt.

- So you must... - I helped the Sword Fraternity!

I knew they had reformed, but didn't report them.

I helped their Chief try and escape...

Dong Yi!

Even if my father's innocence is proven, I am still guilty.

- Everyone knows the truth now... - That is why you must lie!

Do you understand?

All you did was help your childhood friend.

You didn't know he was part of the Sword Fraternity!

- Your Majesty! - He manipulated and used you.

You didn't know anything!

Your Majesty!

If you do that, I'll take care of everything else...

I can't do that, Your Majesty! How can you ask me to lie to everyone?

Dong Yi!

What will the world say? What will the people say?

No, Your Majesty, I can't do that.

I won't besmirch you in order to save my life!

- You are the King! - I don't care if I'm King!

Don't you understand? I don't care about any of that!

I just want to protect you!

I don't care if I'm known as the biggest fool in the world!

I don't care about any of that!

Yes, I was born in the Palace...

...raised to be King, and lived all my life as such.

I didn't know I could feel like this.

But I can't lose you!

Dong Yi, I can't give you up!

Dong Yi!

Please... Please allow me to cover everything up.

Nothing happened, Dong Yi.

Absolutely nothing!

- Nothing at all! - Your Majesty...!

He wants to cover everything up even though he knows everything?

- His Majesty...? - Your Highness!

Your Highness...!

- Leave me. - Your Highness!

- Your Highness... - Go!

Is this how it will be?

You have always been King...

But is Consort Chun so precious to you...

...that you would go this far?

Your Majesty, you can't mean that!

Why won't you allow us to investigate Consort Chun?

She is innocent of any crime.

She didn't know he was one of the Sword Fraternity.

Your Majesty, you saw everything with your own eyes!

So how can you give such an order?

I cannot accept such an order.

This case must be processed according to the law.

The Chief of the Sword Fraternity has already confessed to me.

Consort Chun has also confirmed what he said.

What else do you want?

- But Your Majesty...! - What is it?

Are you unhappy that things have not gone according to plan?

I heard that you gave orders to have Consort Chun watched.

Am I wrong?

That... that's because there were reports of communication...

...between Her Highness and the Sword Fraternity.

And that was true.

Your Majesty, this case cannot be covered up because of personal emotions.

This concerns the moral foundation of this nation!

Governor!

That is why I will carry out my investigation according to the laws,

...no matter what your orders are.

Even though I may be dismissed and punished,

I am your loyal subject, and will do my duty.

Governor, how did it go?

His Majesty is being obstinate. This may not go our way.

What?

Then we will leave Consort Chun alone.

That is His Majesty's order.

- But Your Highness... - Instead...

...arrest all of her attendants.

Let's see if Consort Chun will continue to persevere.

Let's see if she will continue to hide while her attendants suffer,

The nation's nobles rise up to protest the King's bias,

...and the people turn against him.

- Your Highness! - Your Highness!

Let go of me!

How dare you do this!

We need to bring them in for questioning.

- Please stand back, Your Highness. - Questioning? They know nothing!

Even so, since we cannot bring you in for questioning,

We will have to substitute them instead.

Is this why you asked me for time?

So you can replace yourself with your attendants?

Take the women to the Prefecture Office!

Yes, sir!

Let them go!

Your Highness, we'll be all right. You must persevere!

Your Highness, you must stand strong! Please!

- Take them away! - Yes, sir!

Lady Bong! Ae-Jong!

Ae-Jong!

- Take them away! - Yes, sir!

- My Lady! - My Lady!

Halt!

Officer Cha Chun Soo!

You are hereby arrested...

...for being a member of the Sword Fraternity!

- Arrest him! - Yes, sir!

They can't do this! Sir!

Chun Soo!

- Chun Soo! - Your Highness!

You must not forget His Majesty's words.

Promise me! Please promise me!

- Chun Soo! - Take him away!

Your Highness, you must persevere... You must be strong!

Move, you rascals! Move!

Are you deaf? Arrest me!

I'm connected with the Sword Fraternity too!

Arrest me too! I delivered a letter for them!

I communicated with the Sword Fraternity too,

- Let us through! - Take these men away this instant!

- Yes, sir! - Let go of me!

Damn it! What a nuisance!

Funeral of the deceased Lord Oh Tae-Suk

Bring the food out quickly.

Make sure it doesn't burn.

Get the servants to paste these declarations all over the capital!

Yes, Father.

I will have vengeance for my brother's death!

My eyes will see Consort Chun's dead body!

My Lord, what should we do?

You mean His Majesty knows everything...

...and yet he's trying to cover up Consort Chun's crime?

That's what it says!

How can the King be so besotted by a concubine?

Your Majesty, you must punish Consort Chun!

[Scholars of the Confucian Academy]

Please listen to the cries of the people!

Please hear our plea, Your Majesty!

Please hear our plea, Your Majesty!

Your Majesty, it is an unjust decision.

I too, respect Consort Chun...

... and feel that her circumstances are unfortunate.

But even so, her crime cannot go unpunished.

- I don't want to hear it. Leave me. - Your Majesty...!

I will not change my decision. So leave me!

Your Highness, the protests of the nobles will not wane.

His Majesty is losing the respect of his ministers even as we speak.

I don't care if I'm King!

I just want to protect you!

I don't care if I'm known as the biggest fool in the world!

No, Your Majesty, you must not do that.

You must never allow that to happen!

Make sure that Consort Chun is unaware of all of this.

Yes, Your Majesty.

Nothing can cause her to waver on this,

Do you understand?

Yes, Your Majesty.

And summon Chief Suh.

I will give another judgment on the 1684 case.

Yes, Your Majesty.

Your Majesty!

You may enter.

- Your Majesty... - What is it?

Her Highness has gone to the Prefecture Office...

What did you just say? She went where?

To the Prefecture Office, Your Majesty.

She has gone to see the Governor!

- Is that so? - Yes, she is here right now.

Forgive me, Your Majesty. Please forgive me.
