at Manish Malhotra's house.

I just saw her. I saw
the face and I knew her of course,

I knew her as Alia Advani.
In fact, on my phone,

till very recently,
her name was fed as Alia Advani.

I met her and I was like,

can you come tomorrow and meet me,
it's for a short film.

She came and she heard it

a lot of people noticed me in.

that when I signed the film.

of Kabir Singh.

I'm a huge Arjun Reddy fan.

He sat next to me and saw it.

And I had loved Arjun Reddy.

I had loved Vijay Deverakonda
and I was like.

This is amazing,
what are they going to do to it?

Like how are they going
to make this better?

I know there is lot of...
lot of people

who don't like Kabir Singh,

for whatever reasons.

I am admitting I loved it.

Like whether I am going
to get into trouble,

I anyway am going to get
trolled, so whatever, I loved it.

Why? What will they do to you?

I was crying in the last scene
in the park.

I was like this is so embarrassing.

That I am wiping my tears.

And Shahid is sitting next to me,
it's a bit bizarre.

Because it is surreal, right?

emote and you are crying,

Anyway, Kiara makes
me cry in the movies,

what did you think of Kabir Singh?

I understand, there was pressure,
a lot of people felt pressure.

I loved it, now I am saying it
nationally of course,

I loved the movie.

because for me,

Kabir Singh was
a big turning point in my life.

Before Kabir Singh,
very few people would come up to me,

know me, but after Kabir Singh,

what's interesting is that, there
was the section of the audience,

and let me tell you,
much larger section,

that would come up
to me it was almost like,

they knew me as Preeti, they would
only call me Preeti, till date.

And there was so much love
coming my way,

it was over whelming,
but then there was also,

this section that was.

There were obviously
polarizing views

on the film,
and you know they had...

Specially your side
of the town, Kiara.

A lot of people...

South Bombay.

A lot of people found,
certain things problematic for them,

And I didn't know
how to receive this.

I didn't know
whether to celebrate it.

I remember you spoke to me once,
about it.

-He called me up.
-Shahid, I am so happy.

I didn't know if I had to be happy
about it.

-Your character is the...
-Of course.

...problematic part so,

for what people find problematic,
the misogyny in the film,

which to me maybe, is an emotional
narrative of a love story.

I was going by the character.

I was like,
this is what Kabir would do,

-...this is what Kabir thinks.
-...exactly.

He is just being this massive lover,
in this love and craziness.

Did you feel that you had to defend
yourself?

So, I think because I played
a Kabir, I was deeply rooted,

into the psyche of the character.

And I could understand why
Kabir was the way that he was.

So, for me, I had played
the character with that dynamic,

I never as an actor feel,

that I need to play characters
that are always being perfect,

or being good or whatever, I think
acting is about choosing characters,

which are complexed,
or which are challenging.

And it is about representing
lives as it is.

We are not trying to say
what is right and wrong,

we are just trying to say
this happens.

It's a film when you
have such a massive success,

it's also like a Catch 22,
you want to own it because,

it has given you everything,
it is your biggest success,

in your career trajectory,
and yet there are some people,

who have issues with it.

Have you had awkward
conversations with people

who walked up to you and said,

how could you be in a film
like this,

or how could your character do this?

Of course, there are people
I know who, found it difficult to,

absorb the nature
of the relationship,

and they were just
so thrown by that dynamic,

they could not appreciate
the film for everything else.

There are a lot of people like that,
but you know at the end of the day,

the audience is mature enough
to see a film in context, you know.

And I have seen Taxi Driver,
I have seen Scarface,

and I have seen so many films,
where the protagonist,

is not necessarily perfect,
he is very messed up.

And from the very first
promo that we made,

we very clearly said,
this is a story of a guy,

who is not conventionally
the right kind of a guy.

And also, the much talked
about the relationship being toxic.

This is a new word, toxic.

-There are many new words.
-Yes, many new words.

Some new words are invented here,
and remain forever.

Of course, it was and I think,

and that's why it connected
with people.

-So, it's okay.
-We have all forgiven in love,

and I feel that's
the reason why it connected,

because it is only love that,

can make you forgive
certain actions.

Is your relationship with Sidharth
Malhotra very different from,

the one that is depicted
in Kabir Singh?

I mean most definitely
this is a movie, but.

depicted in Kabir Singh.

He has taken it very
nicely and smoothly.

sides to myself.

what people see of me being

an actor and the fraternity,

the glitz and the glamour,
you know all that.

And then I also have a very homely
and spiritual side to myself.

I have a deep faith and
I am a vegetarian. I don't drink.

You know I have all those things,

so, I always found it difficult
to come across somebody,

who would be able to understand
both sides of me.

And I really struggled with that.

And I was 34 and I was kind of ready
to settle down.

Because I had been living
on my own for over 10 years.

-Yeah yeah..
And just at that time.

Through family and through friends.

-That's how it happened.
-Everything came up.

But it just kind of happened in,

we met and that's the best
thing that happened in my life.

And I feel she brings
so much into my world,

and she balances me out.

And she makes me feel very normal.

And we have beautiful children.

-So, I am very thankful for that.

Does it also make you feel like,
you know, when you are someone from,

-...outside.
-...a different world.

You feel there is so much more
to life also that's reality.

Actually, that's the
world, we are a little bit

of a gated community in the movies.

I have always believed
in the institution,

because I have seen a beautiful
marriage at home.

I was very emotionally
involved in the character.

affected me personally as well.

And my director and my producer,
Aman and Gautam, both of them,

were very keen that the film
goes to the big screen.

And when in December
it didn't happen.

I was really thinking that should
we just now go straight to digital.

It's difficult to repeatedly keep
creating the hype around the film.

Especially when all
your material is out.

And then unfortunately
we released in April,

which is not a great month for us.

There was a certain mood
and a certain type of cinema,

which the audience was watching.

and we had shifted our dates
multiple times,

by the time we released.

But you are still
optimistic and hopeful,

thinking that things
will get sorted.

But it didn't work out like that.

And I feel like maybe we didn't
do the right thing on to the film.

Maybe the film needed
to be protected.

Had you released it digitally

Because you have got so much love,
ever since it come out.
