Benton developed it.

They borrowed local money
when their cash ran out. Lots of it.

Rafe Benton ran the mine and gene
Fuller ran the offices up here in town.

The mine petered out.

Fuller went away to try to get
money to pay back the investors.

Well, he died back east.

And the townspeople figured
that rafe Benton had swindled 'em.

So they sent him
to jail for a year.

Just got out.

Personally, he is
meaner than a rattler.

But money-wise, I hear that
he's been tryin' to sell his spread.

He loaded a shotgun shell
and filled it with bits of gold

and blew it in the face of the
mine to impress the investors.

Neither my husband nor I
knew anything about this.

He kept it a secret from us.

that I would want this
sort of a man as a partner?

No I suppose, you wouldn't.

trying to raise money.

Of course, the
prosecution was having

a bit of a hard time of it

trying to prove that
salting business.

And at that moment,
the news came through

of Fuller's death.

Because of that or

because of some
attack of bad conscience

or combination of both,
I don't know what it was,

Benton says to me, "I'm
gonna change my plea to guilty."

He says, "I did it.
I salted the mine."

And from that moment, I
couldn't get a word out of him.

Of course, the judge accepted
the plea and he was sent up

for about a year and, uh...

That was the end of it.

I thought you were the judge.

That's right, I was.

As you know, Benton
never held it against me.

I gave him the minimum sentence.

Of course, his confession
exonerated Fuller.

Were you his lawyer, too?

Right. Until he went away.

Now, what about, uh,

Garson and Arnold?

They seem to want the railroad.

Sure. They brought the suit

on behalf of the
minority stockholders.

They had legal recourse,

they exhausted it. (Chuckles)
